I recently found four of these (Misq Begum, Misqaal, Anbar, & Masha) in Harvey Nicholls for less than half-price. It seems people had just been saying “what’s these!?” & not been buying them. And they didn’t have testers. So – what do I do in that circumstance? Look them up on here – obviously!. I read between the lines, clock the credentials of the writers, note the variety of reviews (including two from a incorrigable joker who loves to leave it ambiguous whether he actually likes the fragrance under consideration), and find that these have made quite a stir! The reviews for these fragrances make a very different shape from those of say Boss fragrances, the reviews for which seem to be almost entirely people figuring to themselves that they have just broken even, despite having paid very much less than the nominal price for the stuff. No the reviews for these are interesting, to say the least. And that is a good sign on here – so I get all four of them completely blind. And, quite frankly, it’s a direct hit! These are four gems. The parts of the reviews I agree with least are those in which some reservation is expressed. At first I thought “not original particularly, though”; but even that idea has been dispelled as I have worn them and distinctions have begun to emerge. And there is the matter of the apparantly very large number of notes in all but one of them … but doesn’t Clive Christian boast that some of theirs contain over two hundred?
This is a distinctly oudy one. I would give the oud more prominence than the votings here have accorded it. But then maybe it is the other balsamic constituents entering in that are amplifying it, and I am projecting my notion of oud onto them; since after all, this is a particularly balsamic fragrance (and, moreover there’s castoreum listed, which I’m probably conflating with the oud somewhat)… and a highly complex one – perhaps in which the plethora of notes is more patent than in the others. Indeed it is one that does have particularly many.

A dense leathery smoky Oriental gourmand, this one has really surprised me with a resonance I was not expecting from a perfume laden with so many notes. The perfume opens on a somewhat fruity note with hints of pineapple, plum, raspberry, citrus, spices, and honey. It proceeds to a predominantly floral middle where one can detect geranium, heliotrope, lily-of-the-valley, jasmine, rose, and orchid. It dries down into a leathery powdery base comprised of vetiver, sandalwood, patchouli, oud, incense, labdanum, benzoin, tonka bean, vanilla, musk, castoreum, leather and ambergris. Named after a measurement system used to measure precious metals, this is the showcase perfume for the Tola line, a rich opulent and gleefully overindulgent Arabian behemoth of notes. In spite of so many notes (about three dozen), the perfume remains firmly a gourmand (slight female leaning) with strong sillage, projection and very good longevity. Gourmand lovers track this down you can. It is a very exotic and memorable ride. Enjoy!

    “Copy of Coco Noir”
That’s what this scent does for me. And it doesn’t even last long (is that what the pros call ‘sillage’?)
I don’t understand what this house of Tola is trying to achieve here. Their website is crap. Their scents are poor clones of popular brands. And their prices are so fantastically high I think their marketing person must be living waaaay out of the reach of civilization.
Their site says “With every scent comes a story”. Okay, so what’s the story?
I honestly hoped that someone from that part of the world would draw on a rich history full of sensual delights and produce something worthy of the word “Arabian”. I’m thinking: spices, oils, flowers, dates, figs, kohl, nomads, horses, mystery. Please.
The only good thing they have produced so far, in my humble opinion, are beautiful names.

Another ostentatious delivery from the house of Tola. Am i a loser for literally counting all the notes involved in the making of this fragrance? This isn’t a fragrance, this is Noah’s ark; it’s 2 of everything here. With 38 notes leading the way, I’d rather talk accords. The core of this fragrance is fortified with a bitter floral accord. The pungent florals are teamed up with a roasted base of balsams and woods creating a fragrance that’s lush and equally controversial. No doubt, Misqaal is attractive and immensely stout. As expected, it is brimming with rich and alluring notes of honey, pineapple and a strong presence of orchid. Hints of leather, musk, and Oud dances in the background. A fragrance tailored for Fifi La fume….Absolutely not blind buy worthy(for men that is). With that being said, this is an unbelievable fragrance.

Let me start by saying that I am a floral girl. I love pretty feminine perfumes. You know that feeling when you’re drawn like a magnet to something that doesn’t represent you? Like an abstract painting that you just can’t take your eyes off it. That ugly beauty that arouses you. When I first smelled Misqaal, I seriously disliked it and threw my sample in the back of my drawer. Now, a month later, the weather it’s colder and I am craving for spicy and oriental perfumes. Also for challenging ones, maybe because I’m starting to get bored of sniffing my usual comfort-zone scents. And that’s when I remembered Misqaal. So, pulled out the sample and sprayed it on my arm. First impression: “God, this is a strong medicinal and pungent little one!”. Yes, it opens with a blast of spices and bitter notes and the first 15 minutes are hard for me to digest. It almost feels like I am impersonating a cold-hearted b.tch with serious style issues. But come on, bear with me. A little later, it starts to tone down and blend beautifully. Don’t be fooled by the notes listed on the right. Nor by the fact that this perfume is marketed towards women. This is totally an unisex scent. It’s a smokey and dark creation, fully dominated by incense and leather, herbal and bitter notes, embodied with sweet undertones of flowers and fruits. My nose isn’t well educated so I can’t be too specific about what exactly I’m smelling, but I get hints of ripe plums, a subtle pineapple, orchid and benzoin.
So, I went from heavily disliking it to liking it a lot. Give it a try, it deserves more attention. Will I be buying a full bottle of Misqaal? No, because 225 euros for 45 ml is waaay over my budget, but man, I do wish it as a gift.

Will add a full review later but wanted to add a quick thought since there are no real reviews of this yet:
It is similar in character to Nasomatto’s China White. Yes, very similar, although there is a bit more going on here. It has that same kind of chemically harsh and yet intriguing floral/powder/green/vetiver? accord at the heart of it.
So, if you’re a fan of China White, do check this out!
