I wish they would release this fragrance again. It is a gorgeous version of a chocolate perfume. I stocked up before it was discontinued. Orange note was not mentioned, but I seem to detect it. It could possibly be the clove. It is very spicy and lovely for Winter. I hope they will have a change of heart and bring this beauty back!

I love this perfume. I spray it in the air and dance under it. It smells exactly like spicy cinnamony mexican chocolate. I get a bit of citrus and spice in the beginning, then it dries to chocolate almond spice. It works really well with my chemistry.
I found the solid version of this to be nuttier and rounder, less sharp and spicey than the spray.
I can’t find the solid version of this anymore..what gives??

What a little gem from Pacifica! I’ve tried/owned a few of their other scents and none has impressed me as much as this one. The opening smells almost exactly like amaretti cookies – the almond is quite dominant and I think the cherry some reviewers experience comes from this almond note.
After a few minutes, the cinnamon comes into play, but it’s sweet cinnamon, not the dry, piquant powder of the spice rack. I don’t get much cocoa from this scent, though if it’s anywhere, it’s about an hour in, when the almond and cinnamon have relaxed at last into a warming, enveloping hug.
I’d agreed with the reviewer who mentioned that the scent has a kind of ‘sheerness’ that keeps it from tipping over into full-blown, rich gourmand territory. It’s definitely foody, but wears lightly. Projection is decent – no need to keep sniffing my wrist while wearing this, though I do it anyway!
If pressed, I’d say this is more of an almond fragrance than a cocoa one – if you love the scent of Amaretti di Saronno, this one is for you!
NOTE: This review is for the perfume, not the solid (it appears most of the less-enthusiastic reviews are for the solid form, but unfortunately I haven’t tested it so I can’t make a comparison)

I really don’t like this on me (the solid). I had high hopes but it’s hard to pick out any notes in this one – it just smells generically synthetic and sweet (something that i think a lot of the Pacifica perfumes have at their base, but usually with other more natural notes on top). Have tried layering it with the coconut solid but no bueno.

Honestly this smells like cinnamon scented hotel soap.

On me, this is fizzy cola. You can almost feel the bubbles. It’s not bad but not really my thing.
I have the solid perfume, if that makes any difference. Longevity: an hour, tops. Sillage: none 🙁

Pacifica has discontinued this fragrance. Considering that so many of their fragrances smell the same…like lemon…they were stupid to discontinue a unique, lovely fragrance. I like the few fragrances that are truly different from the rest of their collection. It is just sad and irritating that such a bad decision was made to end the production of a beautiful perfume.

Warm, spicy, a touch sweet but not as sweet as you’d think for the notes. Sort of a dark chocolate, dusty, like mix for hot chocolate. More spicy sweet than chocolatey sweet. Great warm gourmand scent but not as chocolatey as you might hope.

This is super spicy and smells like straight up cloves and nutmeg on me. It also starts off with a blast of marzipan, which I don’t like, but that quickly disappears. This is a strange one from Pacifica. Strange, but not bad.

  10. :

This perfume mostly smells like clove on me, with a bit of cinnamon, but the clove is probably just my imagination. At the beginning it is sharply spicy, and as it dries down it becomes mellower and sweeter, but it says spicy throughout. There is an artificial oranges smell in the background, but it isn’t strong enough to be obnoxious, and it doesn’t wreck the perfume. I honestly don’t smell much chocolate or almonds, but that’s okay because I love spicy perfumes and wish there were more out there. It’s so great that Pacifica dared to do something a bit different and pulled it off so well.

Weird! Open, enveloping almond at the beginning – I was (obviously mistakenly!) expecting warm spice, and was very surprised by this cool, round note that greeted me. After that, I got the nutmeg, but it still stayed surprisingly cool – definitely more “fresh” spice than dry or warm. After a while, I got mild cocoa. It ended up like a milk chocolate bar, with a little bit of sweet vanilla and some lingering nutmeg. I never got Dr. Pepper or root beer, but I understand exactly why other reviewers are saying that – it’s that mellow, rounded, cool spiciness over a smooth base. It had a moderate sillage and good longevity for me. It’s definitely not my kind of fragrance, but I do appreciate its uniqueness.

I really like this one. It doesn’t smell too gourmand. It’s spicy, smells kinda like Dr. Pepper or Cherry coke, with a hint of cocoa.

Mmm, cozy! I mainly get sweet almonds from this, it has a spicy dryness to it though, not syrupy-sweet. It has a smooth blend of spicy and creamy, and they’re all sweet baking spices, like cinnamon and nutmeg. But somehow it manages to not be too foody, and also not incense-shop spicy, it’s just very creamy and soft. In the solid perfume, it’s definitely a little understated, I’m anxious to try the spray since those tend to be stronger. The chocolate note isn’t very pronounced to me, it’s more of a creamy/milky/vanillic feel than bitter cocoa, but it’s there.

If you mix this with a some of Pacifica’s Island Vanilla, you get a dead ringer for the scent of Abuelita hot chocolate. Abuelita is a Mexican product – funny cocoa tablets that come in a hexagonal shape. You melt them into hot milk while whisking on the stovetop (or a mixture of milk plus some sweetened condensed milk, if you’re smart). A little cinnamony, a little bit of a burnt almond quality. Just right… Sooo cozy. This scent combo is a spot on copy of Abuelita.
The Mexican Cocoa scent on its own is not overpoweringly sweet to me; I think it has a dryness to it that prevents it from going overboard in the sweetsie department. Wearing it on its own reminds me of the smell of straight up cocoa powder, like the good quality stuff you get at a gourmet market.
The great thing about Pacifica scents is that you can mix their roll-ons and solid perfumes to experiment at such a fair price point! Rose chocolate, assorted florals and chocolate (surprisingly nice!)… lots of interesting combinations possible.
EDIT: I mixed the solid Mexican Cocoa with roll-on Island Vanilla.

At first sniff this smells like a sweet cocktail cherry, then i get christmas cinnamon potpourri which dries down to spicy, fruity gingerbread vanilla. Not sugar sweet, but sweet. Somehow nice and very foody :).

Meh don’t really like this much, maybe because I work in a chocolate shop so Im sick of sweet fragrances!
Its not a bad smell I guess I just don’t want to smell like food.

Gorgeous, spicy, unique. This warms up a room and beyond! Definitely calls to mind xocolātl, upon which I presume it’s based. I smell cayenne and chili peppers right up there with the cinnamon. The lasting power and sillage are incredible…be careful not to over-spray this one!

It’s very unique warm Coca Scent. Fun to wear. Fun night out with Friends. A play Scent. Price may seem bit Cheap. This is why I Noted as saying Fun, Sexy Coca Scent. Play Time Scent !

If you are looking to have a “chocolate” experience, this may not be what you want. It’s a literal interpretation of Mexican cocoa – pure dark cocoa mixed with spices, the way it was originally prepared. I get a strong root beer vibe from this scent, but I really like it. This is a winter scent for me. And the wear time is a bit longer than other Pacificas. When I wear it I get whiffs of it throughout the day. It’s very unique; people will ask what you’re wearing.

  20. :

    4 out of 5

Mexican Cocoa opens smelling strongly of almond extract, with that sweet-creamy cherry aroma. As it wears, it becomes more piquant and warm as the almond blends with the spices and vanilla. I think of cinnamon and nutmeg sprinkled over a soft, honeyed vanilla base. The overall effect is a little like freshly-baked cookies, though it’s not overtly sweet or foody.
This fragrance is invitingly spicy, warm and round. I do get the sense of a soft chocolate note in the mix, but overall it’s the almond and spices that take centre stage. If you’re looking for a fragrance with an obvious chocolate note, this probably isn’t it. Personally, I love this mix of understated chocolate, almond, and spices. This subtle, warm, and cozy fragrance would wear perfectly on cold winter days.

For an incredibly inexpensive perfume, I’m really enjoying this. Spicy, slightly fruity (on my skin), and just a touch of sweetness. I bought this at Whole Foods for just 7.99$, so I have no complaints. (Solid perfume)

  22. :

    5 out of 5

Mexican Cocoa is predominately cinnamon on my skin. The chocolate & almond are there, but definitely in a supporting role.
It smells like Mexican hot chocolate, which I imagine is what they were going for.

  23. :

Pacifica Mexican Cocoa opens with a slightly sweet almond and something else interesting or odd. Unfortunately the oddness gets stronger and stronger and begins reminding me of a synthetic cloying rose. I love some other Pacifica perfumes, especially the delicious Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange.

when i first bought this scent, i was seriously gaga over it. it just plain smells yummy! super sweet and spicy with creamy almond to hold it all together. however, it’s quickly gone from my purse to my dresser–it just isn’t an everyday fragrance. on a cold day lazy day, i will love this. but most days, i want to feel refreshed when i smell my perfume, not hungry. lasting power/sillage is okay, but not as good as other pacifica scents.

  25. :

    3 out of 5

I don’t get much cocoa out of this fragrance, but it is a warm, spicy gourmand scent. It’s strongly cinnamon-y and musky; perfect for a comforting pick-me-up on a cold, rainy day. The spray perfume is a bit intense to wear, and stings my sensitive skin upon application, so I won’t wear this much. However, it’s PERFECT for a room scent, and I love the candles.

  26. :

    3 out of 5

Very spicy and reminds me more of a spiced cake than Mexican cocoa. I know that Mexican cocoa has spices in it, but not to the point where you can’t detect any cocoa. This is not what I would consider to be a chocolate perfume, if that is what you are looking for. If chocolate is what you seek, check out Bittersweet by Tokyo Milk.

I am not really of fan of this one , it’s too sheer and something is off about it. It does smell like Jo Malone’s Blue Agava and Cacao.

  28. :

    3 out of 5

Spicy, (someone said it reminded them of the smell in the Michaels store when you walk in), and a little artificial smelling, in my opinion. It would smell more natural if it had a warmer quality to it, like creamier, but it almost sparkles when you first spray, then tones down and smells much better. I gave it away as a Christmas gift, and since its longevity is fair, it’s not terribly bad.

  29. :

    4 out of 5

This is surprisingly fresh for a chocolate based scent. The chocolate is the centre note for me, but there is also a light spiciness that stops it from being too heavy or sweet. A must-try for chocolate lovers.

  30. :

    4 out of 5

At first spray, Mexican Cocoa reminds me of chocolate covered cherries mixed with cinnamon. Cloves tend to help fragrances last longer, but here, the cloves quickly seem to overpower the other ingredients. The longer Mexican Cocoa is on skin, the softer it gets, and the cocoa mixed with cinnamon becomes a bit more prominant. Still, cloves remain strong in this one, which is why it reminds some of us of an air freshener.
Overall, Mexican Cocoa spray perfume lasts about 6 to 8 hours, fading with time. Intense at first spray, it settles very close to skin within the first hour. It’s dry & spicy, not creamy. It’s not too sweet, so is good as a unisex perfume.

  31. :

this actually reminds me of fizzy cherry coke. not really chocolate so much until it dries down. then i detect a spicy ( i think the cinnamon and definitely the nutmeg ) softly scented chocolate fragrance. nice from first spray to dry down. what starts out strong and carefree ends up soft and sophisticated. imo, it’s very unique. i love wearing this at work too. it lasts about 3 hrs on me.

Wasn’t sure what to expect, seeing as the reviews are sorta all over the place. I have no idea what Mexican Cocoa tastes or smells like. But my initial reaction was “Rootbeer Popsicles”… either that or a Cola Slurpee from 7-11… some sort of cola/rootbeer combo.
That being said, I kinda like it… in an odd gourmand sort of way.
SO, for me, as much as I’ve tried, I can’t detect any of the stated singular notes, but apparently their combination results in a rootbeer/cola sort of scent.
Solid Perfume: sillage and longevity, low.
Spray: Lasts pretty long actually. Sprayed it on my cleavage before bed, and was able to detect it upon waking 8 or so hours later.
Candle: have not lit, but smells great cold.

Ok, so for everyone saying “I’ve had real mexican cocoa”… so have I. I did not expect a chocolate-chocolate smelling perfume here. But I did expect some HINT at least of COCOA. Even mexican cocoa actually contains some cocoa, so there should be a dash of it at least, but I get nothing. It’s also far more complex than just one or two spicy scents.
The only thing I get from this is clove. I let it sit forever thinking it would fade to something better but it’s just clove. In the tin I get a little bit of nutmeg and a LOT of almond, but on me the only thing I can smell is the clove. All day I kept hoping it would fade, that I would at least catch a bit of the almond I can smell in the tin, but nope. On me this is terrible. It just smells as if I hung around someone smoking clove cigarettes all day. Not pleasant at all.

My caveat on this review is that my body chemistry WRECKS a lot of quality juice, so my experience is no fault of the perfumer. I mainly post this type of review so that anyone who has the same issues that I have doesn’t feel that it’s only them, or that their bottle is spoiled.
I love Mexican style cocoa, so I figured this would be a shoe-in. I have successfully worn Comptoir Sud Pacifique’s Amour de Cacao and loved it. On the other hand, no chocolate or cocoa smell by BPAL has ever been pleasant on me.
I loved this out of the bottle; almond and clove being my first impressions. Unfortunately, about ten minutes in on my skin, it turned into a smell I can only describe as being a cross between Band- Aid and Silly Putty.
Luckily, most things that are bad on me are LOVELY on my husband, so he is the lucky recipient of my brand new bottle of Pacifica Mexican Cocoa.

I don’t get chocolate, or almonds, or anything BUT cinnamon. Like I sprayed myself down with some cinnamon dollar store air freshener, ate cinnamon toast crunch with cinnamon schnapps in place of the milk, and then took the cinnamon challenge. I love cinnamon, but I don’t want to smell like I rolled in it.

  36. :

    I agree with Miarose.
I too have had Mexican Cocoa – that is not chocolate, nor is this scent.
It smells exactly like what it says it is Mexican Cocoa .
    Not chocolate at all.
Is very spicy and just a scent I think you really either love it or hate it definately no in betweens in my opinion.

  37. :

    5 out of 5

Very spicy. At first all I can smell is cinnamon and cloves, this last for about 30 minutes then it settles on the skin and takes on a nestle quick, nutmeg aroma but still spicy like the spiced pine cones that are sold in the grocery stores around the holidays. If you like nostalgic Christmas smells this is a good one but if your looking for a true chocolate perfume..look else where.

Whole Foods has the the solid testers on display, which is a very good way to determine if you want to purchase a fragrance or not.I first sampled this one a few months ago and tried it several times over each weekly visit to the store.I knew it was going to be a great scent for cooler weather,so I waited to buy it until now. It’s complex, spicy and gourmet. It reminds me of The Body Shop’s discontinued ‘Amorito’ I get a blast of cinnamon and nutmeg at the start and a drydown of chocolate/vanilla.This layers well with the Indian coconut nectar.

  39. :

    4 out of 5

I got the solid form (and there’s not very much in those little tins). I’m glad it is a natural product, but it’s not the most fantastic chocolate scent I’ve ever used. It was okay. It might be nice for young girls who aren’t old enough yet for a “sexy” scent.

  40. :

I don’t know why people expect a chocolate gourmand fragrance when they smell this. I’ve had real Mexican cocoa…this stuff packs a punch! It’s not your usual Starbucks hot chocolate (which I happen to like; I’m not criticizing). This smells like a mug of Mexican cocoa on first spritz, but the cocoa part does fade away fast, leaving a warm, spicy clove/cinnamon base. For chocolate gourmand, I prefer Gale Hayman’s Delicious Chocolate.

  41. :

    5 out of 5

I was expecting a chocolatey gourmand fragrance. What I got was a spicy blend of clove & cinnamon with a hint of cocoa. If you are looking for a sugary sweet gourmand (like I was) look elsewhere. For those who like the smell of cinnamon or clove, try this fragrance.

  42. :

    5 out of 5

OK, now that I own this, I need to revise: The solid perfume opens with wedding cake style sweet almond – YAY! and some cinnamon & clove. The almond starts to fade and it’s cinnamon, clove, vanilla with a very faint citrus scent. MUCHO NICE!!!
On drydown, it fades too quickly, but the vanilla, milk chocolate and spices are still there. This smells so wonderful, I wish it lasted forever!!!
    ******************end revision
On me, it opened with more chocolate with some clove. Very quickly, it smelled EXACTLY like toothache medicine. “CLOVE”-rwhelming; I actually expected my wrist to go numb. I really liked it, honestly, but I’m not sure I can pull it off… (perhaps in colder weather.)
Ah, but once it dried down, the chocolate dominated again, with the clove softly hanging out in the background. Very nice finish and certainly worth checking out.

  43. :

Smells very good, a little spicy, but definately a gourmand scent.

  44. :

    3 out of 5

This scent is delicious if you love all of its notes – because they are definitely all present. In the initial spritz and for the first five to ten minutes I smell mostly almond and nutmeg. For the rest of its duration all of the notes come through together into a very smooth and nicely balanced blend on my skin. This is a good choice for a very light, slightly spicy, not overly sweet cocoa scent. I like to spray this one in my hair, it smells great and seems to last a bit longer there.
It’s a lovely delectable scent, but on my skin the sillage and longevity are pretty disappointing. I definitely have to reapply if I want it to last all day, but I still really enjoy it. Lasts longer and projects better in cooler weather. Layers really really well with other Pacifica scents.
Edit: Try layering this one with Tibetan Mountain Temple. It reminds me of a crystallized ginger dark chocolate bar!

I received this along with a couple of other Pacifica scents as a gift. This is a review of the perfume solid as the notes appear and develop on my skin:
Top Notes: Cinnamon, Clove and Bitter Almond
Heart: Burnt sugar, Nutmeg and Milk Chocolate
Base: Spiced Vanilla, Amber, and Milk Chocolate.
Overall this is a very gourmand scent that is more spicy than it is chocolaty, even though the chocolate is there in the background. Pleasant but not outstanding. Sadly the perfume solid did not seem to last long, it began to degrade less than three months after I received it. If this scent sounds appealing to you, I suggest purchasing it in liquid rather than solid form.

Everytime I go to Whole Foods, I always spritz this one. It smells so excotic like a big glass of Mexican hot chocolate. Spicy, yet sexy sweet. It blends well with my chemistry and lasts. It makes me want to get some Pan Dulce and drink hot cocoa with cinnamon. Awesome scent, perfect for any kind of weather!
It has a spicy headnote, so if that’s not you, it is not a good scent. It has a faint hint of Almond or Amber, not sure.

  47. :

    5 out of 5

Lots of bitter almond and nutmeg on opening which gives a fresh aromatic accord that somehow suggests a hint of lemon.
On the skin cinnamon makes an entrance, then a little naughty kick of clove.
Dries down to a lush spiced vanilla and deep cocoa. Luxurious, a little dry in a good way, and not too heady with sweetness.

  48. :

    4 out of 5

A sweet delight of delicious perfume! The first approach is a crisp spicy sweetness. There is a bit of clove, immediate nutmeg, then soothing almond. I find a serenity in this intriguing blend, not too gourmand but just right. I find myself drawn to my arm for a calming sensation. This is a delicacy for me and incredibly sexy and scrumptious in the cooler weather!

  49. :

    3 out of 5

    OMG!
This is definitely a spicy vanilla. I get more cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and other baking spices layered over warm vanilla than I do the dark chocolate. This smells like freshly baked gingersnap cookies! Very gourmond.

  50. :

    5 out of 5

Cloves and nutmeg is what totally stands out to me…when I wear it it reminds of ginger bread cookies or baking…very yummy the chocolate does come later definately…but this is a great blend of spicy sweetness!!!

  51. :

    4 out of 5

Very warm and spicy; beautifully blended. I don’t get much chocolate at first, it comes in later – the first and strongest notes are the cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. This is a pretty fragrance, if you’re a “foodie” – just not on me. It smells like a cinnamon rug freshener I used to use for years, so unfortunately for me, it conjures up memories of vacuums…what a shame…

  52. :

    3 out of 5

Whoa, at first spritz I smell an ‘overload’ of spices on top of chocolate. It then settles down to what smells like a hot cocoa drink laced with cinnamon. Couple hours later I smell a gentle chocolate and hint of spice. On my other wrist I tried the solid. Same feeling from both forms.
Side note: I will test this again at a later date as I had just finished pizza when I sampled this and I think the pizza parlor aroma next door interfered with my sense of smell!

This is a review on the SOLID.
    **Missing Notes:
    Clove & Patchouli
(the website doesn’t list Chocolate as a note on their ingredients list though…how peculiar.)
This is definitely a fragrance for the spice-lovers. At first sniff, I get nutmeg, cinnamon, & clove. I also get a mild almond essence in the background. I can detect some vanilla, but BARELY. I’m still trying to sniff out the cocoa/chocolate in this, but can’t find it…anywhere. There’s not much patchouli either (very unlike Neonatura Cocoon). The spices seem to dominate in this fragrance. After a while, I finally get a very little bit of chocolate–but not the bittersweet cocoa you get from a can. It’s more like a chocolate bar that’s brought to your nose and then very quickly taken away. What a tease! I would have preferred more of it. On me, the dry-down is full of nutmeg & cloves. I feel like a spicy dessert waiting to be baked.
***UPDATE: After the spices disappear, I finally “see” the chocolate. Milk chocolate I think & slightly light. It might have been nicer if the spices didn’t disappear completely–just mellowed out a bit. Overall, not bad…but not fabulous either.

This is a dead ringer for Jo Malone’s Blue Agave and Cacao…at a much cheaper price! Arghhh….I bought the Jo Malone at full retail before I found this one.
I love Pacifica fragrances (and their soaps too). Very nicely blended, natural, and easy on the pocketbook.
