Some guy at work said it smelled horrible, that was after one spray and 7 hours, said it smelled like bo, he said what the hell is that smell??? I like, not the bo part but the creamy opening that it starts out with, something dirty, but delicious….

I’m guessing that this fragrance got reformulation and the notes listed here are the reformulation and the notes listed on Basenotes is the original? Basenotes lists notes of oak, vanilla, plum and “living malbec” and says it was created in 2004. Sadly I have only smelled the oakmoss/patchouli spicy version. It’s not often that I dislike a fragrance because of the smell. Usually it’s because of performance issues or if something is price too high IMHO. This fragrance is super old school and has a dry feeling. The opening is full of oakmoss which is a big turn off to me. It’s so pungent and spicy that it simply just does not appeal to me. I wish I could get my hands on the original but it seems impossible. Barolo looks like a great scent also but it’s nowhere to be found in the US.

I was exposed to this fragance by a Brazilian exchange student who lived in my house, my sister and I would swoon when he came out of the shower smelling so good, my sister was obsessed so she finally asked him and he told her the name, after a long search I found it, I wanted it for my husband and even though the seller tried to convince me to buy Malbec Noir, I assume because it was more expensive, I wanted the manly cocktail I remembered so I got it.
I haven’t given it to him yet because it’s summer and I feel this is definitely a winter/autumn fragance but I sprayed it on my hand around 30 minutes ago and it’s oh so good, I smell dried cedar mostly but I can’t ignore the shy wine coming through, makes me think about drinking wine in a forest lol…
I have the feeling my hubby won’t like it because he’s a young man in his early 20’s and loves fresh adn youthful fragances, I’ll update when he receives it :p

Here is a perfume house the Apothecary giving much to talk about, and that in the course of the day has become an 8 or 80 within the perfumery universe, yes indeed! Perhaps because it has a large audience that prized both for the quality of its aromatic proposal, quite unprecedented by the way on home soil, the powerful Malbec ended up suffering an excessive trivialization which can lead to discontinuation, if there is one day. Despite having faced some reformulations, I consider it still a perfumão for the milder nights or for warmer days too, but in homeopathic doses for not assaulting the nostrils of the Other, I see it more match with an outfit at least sport thin; has office guy or dinner for a special day of celebration, and around like that. Well appreciable output with a steady dose of herbal citrus with half touches Cassis sheet they become firm and lush with every minute that passes, giving an aspect of rich man’s aftershave. After about 3 hours of evolution, Malbec becomes pure virility, exhaling to my nostrils, only the dry Patchouli and muuuuuuita wood Cedar, something dense that combination then yells: I AM HERE! You can feel the warmth of wood Cedro interlaced the harshness of Patchouli roots when dry and handmade prepared for perfuming. After a 9 hour it features a resin background, I believe it is the benzoin, amber one delicious and manly crossed by the touch of a oak moss sprayed by such wine alcohol, the House says the Apothecary compose the excellence of Malbec and that both refers to cheirão Grape old from cover to cover barrel on the fragrance! Malbec is the hands of talented Napoleon Bastos, this guy that’s beast like him and he does not have the fault of the “hype” that his creation had suffered, unfortunately, but if we look on the other hand, this is nothing more than a synonym for competence and skill with the tools with which we work.

From vmzaneti’s review below: “Malbec is quite possibly the most overworn fragrance here in Brazil for the past years. It’s maybe a good option to people who live in another country though, because despite of its popularity, it’s very original compared to other modern fragrances”.
Well, I am from the US and I’m a woman so this is very unique for me indeed. I prefer it to O Boticario’s offerings for women. I was introduced to this perfume house though a Brazilian salon in my small southern US town and I have tested it every time I frequent that salon. I’m ready for a full bottle. Malbec is full of all the notes I adore. It definitely comes across as masculine as opposed to unisex but in this cold February weather the sweetness of vanilla (benzoin) and the spicy woodiness take center stage over the boozy citrus opening and it all just works on my skin. Projection is monstrous. I think I overdid it in the salon tonight. Even in cold weather a light hand is best when applying Malbec.
Edit: This layers beautifully with Prada Amber. It becomes a little richer and a little more feminine.
Arsenchik – :
Great for the office! Woody, strong, manly, a confident man wearing tie and suit.
Only thing that upsets me a little bit: has a sweetness that doesn’t match the concept. If it was a wine, I wouldn’t drink it. Still a good one, though.
ZEE – :
Top is a bit green and fresh/citrusy. Goes to a clove-like smell, quite interesting but turns quickly into a drunk old man and cheap shaving foam blend. Besides, everybody uses this cologne.
It projects well and has good longevity. I wish people could stop compare Barolo with this. Barolo is spetacular: sweet, woody and classy. Nothing more to say about.
yalishev – :
Versatilidade/ Versatillity: 7/10
Try/ Buy/ Pass: Try
Malbec meets perfectly the proposal of the frangrance: a perfume that is very similiar a wine (It has Wine alcool in its composition).
Malbec starts fresh like an orange peel, spices, aromatic leaves and a cedar barrels.
After this, it looks like a good red wine: sweeter aroma-like dried fruit (prunes) and a touch of vanilla.
And remains: woody, spicy and sweet until the end.
Malbes has a longevity of 6 hours, even on cold days and at night does not increase much teh longevity. The Sillage is good on the firsts 2 hours, then it gets close to the skin.
Perfume that deserve the success that’s doing in Brazil.
I Liked it, but I won’t buy it again.

arefjew.sergey – :
It reminds me of time spent in Brazil, with my husband.

It’s not my favorite, but I like its essence!
Keetlecycle – :
It simply smelts nothing

cvl411JeomiWogkig – :
I wouldn’t wear it but it’s still a good perfume.
If there’s the need of some choice about Malbec and Barolo, this second one is the best from O Boticario!!
shkgoroxov – :
Way better than Barolo, imo. This one is a hit here in Brazil. The reason is simple: it is probably the best offering by O Boticario. Malbec is a successful attemp to create a scent that resembles a demi-sec type of wine made with malbec grapes. The fragrance has, indeed, a very strong smell of wine and woods. It is very masculine and has good projection and lasting power.
Unfortunately or not, Malbec is quite possibly the most overworn fragrance here in Brazil for the past years. It’s maybe a good option to people who live in another country though, because despite of its popularity, it’s very original compared to other modern fragrances. It sure does deserves a try!
Thumbs up for Malbec.

relif – :
Ok, talking about this fragrance is kind of like complicated for me, as it doesn’t please me. I’ll try to be impersonal.
Malbec is a phenomenon in Brazil, is the most sold-out fragrance by O Boticário, you can feel its smell everywhere around here.
Take it serious: this is not for summer or hot days, it is too strong, maybe that’s why I don’t like it. I live in Brazil, a very hot country and people don’t mind on wearing it at any time what makes its smell unbearable to me sometimes.
It gives a strong citric first impression, going into a more fruity aspect because of the Malbec grape seeds oil and then you have a woody completion. Be sure about the grape scent, it is very pronunciated. My worst complaints about Malbec are the lack of balance among the notes and the strong appeal to grape scent, which makes the fragrance sickening.
7/10.
valik.svs – :
Yur4ik – :
There is a liquid soap with grape seeds that is sold in the O Boticario stores that I find pretty enjoyable. I still love the perfume itself (more than Barolo by the way), but man… I smell it EVERYWHERE!
sergantt – :
Excelente.
asdf12345 – :
Love it! Very yummy! I´ll give one to my boyfriend.
Uptade: It’s like Barolo indeed, but I think Barolo is safer and this one is more edgy.
Barolo: Woods.
Malbec: Spices.
Painkiller333 – :
I know Malbec, Barolo and special edition of malbec: “black” gran reserva. In my oppinion malbec it’s not strong fragrance and too acid also, is too bother. My prefer is black version, but unfortunatelly her it’s launched just five to five years. until it’s launch, Barolo is the best in my opinion.
spoudgedulp – :
I agree. Barolo is much better.
serj – :
It’s very good, it has a scent that really reminds of wine.
Unfortunately, now it became so popular… you can smell men wearing it everywhere.
JokerArsen – :
an excellent fragrance for men with strong personality!
irina.scheregesch – :
giuf – :
Nice to see this brand here, and a surprise too, since most of O Boticario’s scents are not properly “perfumes”, but “colognes”. I remember the first one, the now classic “Styletto”, a hit when I was very young. This Malbec was the last scent from Boticário that I`ve tested, and in fact I bought a bottle. I had some reservations about it since Malbec is a hit and many people in Brazil already know it, and because on the paper I thought it was a little strong; I also read this opinion (about being strong) in some brazilian foruns. But, different from other scents, Malbec smells better on my skin than on paper, and, at least for me, is not strong (in the sense of being overwhelming). I don’t know if you could say that is a “wow” type of scent, but makes its mark since sillage is pretty good, and longevity too, by that matter. Feels fresh, no doubt it is masculine, and I find it pleasant. A shower wouldn’t make it disappear so easily, but I love the reminiscent smell that rests. A scent with a wine note? Well, yes, I think I can identify that note. And I like, as I like the bottle, and as I like wines “:-). Since I`m still not an expert, I don`t imagine another scent to compare to it right now, and give a better picture about Malbec. Great!
