Description

Lalique is launching the new masculine fragrance L’Insoumis in September 2016, dedicated to the founder of the house Rene Lalique and his artistic spirit. The man who wears it is conceived as a charismatic, elegant and authentic individual who does not follow trends but creates them. He is a dreamer and a modern day adventurer.

The composition belongs to the aromatic-woody fougere group, developed by perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin and produced with rich and high-quality ingredients. An intense aromatic combination of bergamot, rum and basil prelude to the classic masculine heart of lavender, black pepper and clary sage. Haitian vetiver, moss, patchouli and the Clearwood molecule end the composition.

The contemporary Art Deco design of the bottle is decorated with a relief of a fern, the motif that was first used on Lalique‘s iconic Tourbillons vase from 1926. The fern symbolizes the free spirit that the fragrance is trying to convey.

Nice and discreet (that doesn;t mean it performs badly).
    Great versatile scent.
All year long day fragrance, 25+

L’Insoumis is a more refined take on what is generally accepted to be mass-appealing to a larger audience. It’s refined, and easy to wear. I would say that this is a fragrance for a man in his early twenties or older, but I can definitely see other almost-twenty teens like myself rocking it as well. When I first smelt Dior Sauvage, I initially had a positive impression until I smelt it on every single guy I came across. I’d definitely describe L’Insoumis as Sauvage’s more grown-up and cultured relative. Make of that what you will.
For versatility and scent, I’d give this a 9/10. Add the insane value as well, and I’d give it 20/10 if I could.

big time rum smell opening and to me a ginger type smell also.it is pretty cool how ambroxan is no where in the opening.but when the dark rum disappears then it starts to smell familiar.

Scent: Green, sweet, and a lil bit of spice and boozy vibe For me, this is very well balanced, wearable, and considered.
    Bottle: Gorgeous looking bottle.
Summary: It is not loud “in your face scent” in fact it is noticed and stays for hours, to be honest Lalique produce so many good perfumes “niche quality” for a decent price tag!! unbeatable house in my opinion. wearing it on business days are okay, longevity is solid and projection stays near you.

do you guys have any suggestions on layering?
i generally dig the concept of it, which i could best describe as “dirty coconut juice” . my issue is that it is sort a coconut juice that was left on the sun for too long (possibly in a plastic bottle) and it is a serious blow to its attractivness. i wish it was a more crispy, more clean-cut thing for me to really enjoy wearing it. nevertheless i would appreciate any suggestions/past experiences of layering this one (i find it too good to just give the bottle away, but not good enough to wear it straight, so im really thinking layering)

    Blind buy. Very nice surprise.
I don’t care for BDC/Sauvage. I get the BDC/Sauvage comparison, but for me there isn’t really one. L’insoumis is a fougere with a small kick of ambroxan that carries it into a freshness side. I think that’s where the comparison is coming from.
Green, sweet from the basil, a bit of spice, and a dewey moss that holds it all together. For me, this is very well balanced, wearable, and considered.

    Oh wow.
I bought this earlier in the year and have been sitting on it thinking it was a fall scent. Tried it this morning on a whim and am seriously regretting not opening it earlier.
I know in these reviews everything gets compared to the heavy-hitters- Sauvage, Aventus, etc. I try not to do that unless it’s legitimate, and in this case it’s legitimate.
This opens up like a smoother, more aromatic version of Sauvage – if Sauvage is a rebellious James Dean, this opens more like what Sauvage would have been had Tom Ford released it – with a healthy underlying dose of patch (along with mint and sage – together they’re the trio of my favorite fragrance greens 🙂 and without the ambroxan megaphone, less the rebellious punk and more the refined gentleman.
The drydown is much more subdued but it is distinctly
“birchy” which immediately makes me think, of course of Aventus, because that birch is perhaps my favorite component of that fragrance – but that aromatic “salad” persists through to the drydown, pairing very nicely with the birch and with hints of the rum and lavender supplying some sweetness it gives you a few hours of a glorious skin scent.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll happily repeat myself, Lalique strikes again.

this scent is a distinguished, silver fox in a charcoal trenchcoat and black suede boots walking the windy streets in autumn.
    pure class.
this is what Sauvage wishes it grew up to be.

I have a bit of a love affair with Lalique. It’s the only house besides Guerlain that I’ve been so consistently impressed with. Seemingly nothing they release is a flop. I’m not saying I’m in love with all their fragrances, but I certainly haven’t tried a single one I didn’t at least like. L’Insomnis started out bordering a dislike. I was disappointed, and I was a bit crestfallen that one of my favourite houses, and the creators of Encre Noir made something this generic and synthetic. Of course, I know better than to make all assumptions based on the initial opening, and so I waited. Just give it 10-15m and it turns into something entirely unique and beautiful. I don’t know why I even bothered thinking otherwise, it’s Lalique.
L’Insoumnis opens with an overly synthetic coconut vibe reminiscent of hand washes and cheap air fresheners. Let it soak into your skin for a bit and the coconut vibe turns a lot more natural, and takes a backseat to what I can only describe as an herbal, floral, and woody potpourri of bliss. I haven’t smelled anything like this, and it’s entirely unique to my nose. In fact, I have a bit of trouble describing this smell, possibly because I’m unaware of clary sage’s natural scent profile. The nutty coconut vibe mixed with the herbs, florals and woods is just mindbogglingly daring and it works so well. I think the basil and clary sage creates the coconutty vibe in a really great way. There’s a natural sweetness to it that is also hard to describe. It’s a sweet scent but also not a sweet scent. The natural herbs mix ins such a way to give a very herbaceous kind of sweetness that is just lovely and much appreciated over synthetics. Honestly it’s incredible how much natural quality this smells like after that opening. All I can say about it’s scent profile is that you need to sample this right away, but be patient with it and get to understand it first. It may go from “meh” to “wow” before you know it.
I envision an older man walking in an expensive peacoat on a brisk New York morning. He could be 25, or 45. The age profile matters less than how attractive and confident he is. He has a suit&tie job, drives an expensive car, is sharp, witty, and an overall intriguing guy to be around. He’s calm, collected, and very mysterious. The target of many women’s hidden crushes at work, they just can’t seem to gather the courage to approach him to ask his story.
I envision an attractive younger man walking on the beach on a cool morning. He just got off his company paid vacation cruise ship, along with tourists and other wealthy individuals. He walks to the beach’s bar and orders a coconut Pina Colada. His charisma and charm naturally draw beautiful women (not girls) who find his mysterious but modern and playful vibe attractive. He may or may not have taken some of these women back to his cabin for some more drinks.
Essentially this scent is very versatile. It can be worn professionally, or it can be worn casually. However, I feel this scent requires the right kind of person, both in looks and mentality to wear to its full potential. It’s a mysterious, fun, classy, modern take on an old fragrance style that I really enjoy. This suits both cooler and warmer seasons, but I feel summer would be pushing it (depending on how hot it gets).
Overall lalique doesn’t fail to impress, and I will definitely be wearing this one come this fall/winter. I admit, even if I didn’t like the fragrance, like another reviewer posted, the bottle is just too nice not to have. Honestly the bottle may be the nicest one in my collection.
    Longevity: A bit disappointing, 5hours.
Sillage: An acceptable trail, lasts 1+ hrs.
Value: 10/10, as expected of lalique.
Personal appreciation: A lovely, mysterious scent that exudes lalique’s wonderfully unique temperament.

I will be honest I blind bought this for the bottle.. I figured that if I didn’t like it it would look cool in my starting collection.. I would agree with DRNDjas that the first 5 minutes is somewhat generic and light but after the first 5-10 minutes this fragrance comes alive.. My favorite thing about this fragrance other than the awesome bottle is the versatility.. For those who just like having one cologne at a time I recommmend this.. Any season Any time Any occasion.. 10/10 for me

Today is my first day wearing it. Just got it today. Not much i can say at this moment, but first time i sprayed, i like it. That sweet spicy aromatic scent really gave me calmness and relaxation. So far, i haven’t noticed yet woody notes after 5 hours on my body but that freshness herbs scents and moss is noticeable. I will give another review afyer a week. So far kinda like it, but not yet love it. It a very safe choice for those who prefer light airy but long lasting without poking anyone’s nose hahaha

  14. :

I’ve worn this a few times via sample.
First 5 minutes- unimpressed. Generic, light.
5 min – 3 hours- amazing! Love the basil/sage/vetiver combo. Serious, deep, classy and addicting. Fantastic!
3+ hours- Ambroxan. Could this “clearwood molecule” be the alias for the increasingly ubiquitous ambroxan? There is validity in the comparisons of this to Sauvage, Bvlgari Atlantiqve, etc… the problem I see with ambroxan is that, given it’s consistent, synthetic, and strong signature, it smells exactly the same whenever it’s used. Unlike, say, vetiver- real or synthetic- which can very from perfume to perfume, ambroxan is always ambroxan. So, the emerging dominance of the big A ruins the drydown for me, as it becomes boring and one dimensional here.
Still, I love the fragrance up until that point. Full bottle worthy? Not sure yet, though I am leaning toward it.

My original review below was on a full day testing. I was very surprised to see other reviewers mention 90s fougeres style notes, which I couldn’t get at all at that time. Today I got a full bottle, and this fragrance just made it to my top 10. It indeed has some barbershop vibe in the background! It’s like something you might get by layering Azzaro Visit and Drakkar Noir with a finishing touch of CdG Wonderwood. Woods (i’m pretty sure there’s nutmeg here along with sandalwood) and vetiver, pepper, make this very masculine and a bit more mature.

Love this fragrance! This smells very elegant in an old world way. I really enjoy the sandalwood base which makes me feel like I finished bathing with a very expensive soap. The ingredients are top notch and nicely blended. I can see why it’s classified as a fall/winter scent, but, honestly, can see it working year round in the office or at night. All around another good effort by Lalique – a house that continues to impress and surprise me.

Today had the chance to test L’Insoumis throughout the day (once in the morning and then again in the afternoon to make sure), and I am very positive about this scent.
What I get overall is something in the genre of Ferrari Silver Essence, Pal Zileri Sartoriale, Azzaro Visit and maybe even a little Gucci Rush or Kilian’s Straight to Heaven. I definetely don’t get anything that resembles 90s, shaving cream or any sort of barbershop smell of any sort of powerhouse.
This is a great warm woody fragrance. I’m surprised that “nutmeg” is not listed in the notes though as I mostly get something like nutmeg/coconut on a woody base (sandalwood, cedar and maybe incense?)
Long story short, if you like the non-sweet nutmeg/coconut scents with woods and pepper, definetely try this one out.
Performance is not great, but also not scandalous. Easily can live with it.

I really like this. I tried this out in Fortnum, and one of the staff and I agreed that it was unique. All the Laliques I own are. Along with their value, that is what makes Lalique such a great house.
I struggle to identify notes, but it’s nice to have a green, grassy scent for the colder months. Not sure why this isn’t seen as a year-round scent.
This may be me, but the scent, although lovely, doesn’t seem to last very long.

…..Has Lalique ever launched a poor fragrance? I have – and love them all! Equus, White, Encre Noire, Noir extrème…you name them.
They´re absolutely beautifully composed, made with skill, are never imitations of other ´fashionable´ perfumes (read crowd pleasers) and always of a high quality, like the crystal Lalique is famous for.
To me Lalique goes hand in hand with the best houses France has to offer: Caron, Hermés and Guerlain.
I think it´s an insult for Lalique to compare this perfume with a fragrance like Sauvage from Dior. To my opinion that was one of the weakest perfume releases from Dior ever, sorry…

How pleasant this is. Opens not unlike the wonderful Egoiste Platinum, with a prominent lavender note. But whereas with Platinum the lavender comes with various Provençal herbs, here it’s pine needle that takes centre stage, along with – perhaps? — a bit of pineapple. For the drydown, it’s all about warm, soft-hued pine notes with some very mild patchouli for spice.
I can easily imagine the temptation other houses might have felt in cranking up the pine into a loud, headache-inducing affair as is so common with woody notes these days. So kudos to Lalique for going against the grain and opting for the understated approach. (And yes, there is a kind of retro vibe there, reminiscent of late 70s fougères in all the right ways.)
A wonderful new modern fougère that gets 8/10.

I could either write a massively long review or a super short one for this, reason being it’s not straight forward but then again it is….let’s see how it goes anyway.
The opening was a surprise, much more masculine and earthy than I expected but then modern does of the generic cleaness and freshness there to keep L’Insoumis relevant, But is ‘relevant’ really what we want from a perfume? Personally I’d like them to reflect back on 80’s powerhouses or classic fougeres, it’s about time they had a renaissance in the mainstream. Lalique kind of do this but also fall short quite a bit. Don’t get me wrong I love the house, they don’t really play along or dance to the tune of the mainstream and I think this avoids that too by being classy, retrained and in keeping with the brand aesthetic. This being said I don’t think they have any real masterpieces among their repertoire.
Oh just reading a few comparisons to Sauvage, style wise…I don’t entirely disagree but smell wise it’s nothing like…could there be a hint of ambroxan in here?…I’d say yes but it’s low in the mix and likely the other elements of Sauvage that remind people of this scent. The style is very much in the mould of a Sauvage or even an Aventus, fresh fruity top and smoky, earthy base, a classic men’s combo.
The clary sage, vetiver, pepper and all conspire to make a clean, modern yet earthy brew. The note I get prominantly is patchouli from start to finish and with that clary sage it’s the right balance of masculine dirt and modern, powdery, clean, This is a tightrope walker of a fragrance. It’s carefully measured style could easily be mistaken for the mundane but when you’ve been around enough fragrances you can tell what is accidental or bandwagon jumping and what is deliberate, and L’Insoumis falls into the latter catagory. I enjoyed it and found it very wearable the performance was pretty god, subtle but present drydown and the bottle looks nice. All in all I’m glad I blind bought it.

L’Insoumis (The Rebel) is a male fragrance by french brand Lalique, known for its magnificent production of crystal, launched in Europe in 2016. Lalique perfume creations are a match to their crystal. They are daring, unusual, intriguing often avantgarde but above all smell fantastic and L’insoumis is no exception. Full of character, they are not for everyone but the one who can wear Lalique perfume will sit on a fragrant cloud “far from all evil,” just like Dis, famous serbian poet, said in his poem “Perhaps she sleeps.”
Perfume composition of L’Insoumis is very complex, successfully binding the echoes of different scent groups like aromatic fougere perfumes, oriental spicy and woody. It resembles classic male fragrances like Azzaro Pour Homme, but adjusted to modern gourmand trends. Sweet and liqueur-like note of rum probably owns its vibe to coumarin that is perfectly harmonized with lavender note typical for the fragrance group of this perfume – aromatic fougere. The opening combined with bergamot and basil is fun, like sitting with friends in a garden of some bar, siping juicy cocktails and having even juicier conversations. The mixture of modern and classical, fresh and bitter, sharp and sensual in L’Insoumis is incomparable with any male perfume that appeared in the past few years. In a certain way, this perfume could be everything to everyone although it doesn’t aspire to be a megahit. If compared to many another male “contemporaries” that desire to attract fans by all means, L’Insoumis does it smoothly and unpretentiously. It knows its value and suits most men well and it could be their “secret weapon” but it is not his style to impose. Those who know will know its value. Just like Schweppes slogan: “Only for experienced.”
L’Insoumis comes in a beautiful bottle which is not surprising since Lalique house was part of perfume history by creating bottles for best perfumers and most exquisite 20-century perfumes. Inspired by 1926 Tourbillons vase with fern motive, the bottle like the perfume itself is a mixture of retro and contemporary design. My advice is to wear it in spring and fall so that every note could vibrate. You don’t have to be Thomas Vlassenroot (Alain Delon) in the 1964 movie L’Insoumis, but if you wear this perfume there is a great chance you’ll find your Dominique.

One description that I found fitting after having a full wear on this magnificent fragrance: A simple and modern take on old school fragrances.
This is a different direction from the vetiver trend that Lalique has been following for a while – creating a moss fragrance, and what a fragrance it is! A BOLD fragrance that spills character with a just a little touch of class.
Begins with an explosion of bergamot and basil, dries down to a lavendery-vertivery pepper with a hint of sage…and the base is moss…massive moss with a slight hint of vetiver.
    A magnificent autumn/winter fragrance indeed.
And with the proper outfit (smart casual to full on formal, in my opinion) – and attitude, ofcourse – you can make this one work wonders with you 🙂

  26. :

    3 out of 5

L’Insoumis smells nice at first with a clean, fruity note along the lines of apple but that doesn’t last very long, and then it fades into a vague base with notes too soft and blended to really stand out or form any kind of identifiable, distinct personality. I get some lavender and vetiver, and there’s definitely a basil aroma, but they’re very unimpressive and bland. Though they’re not harsh synthetic notes, they are clearly synthetic in a dull, lifeless sort of way. Everything’s kind of hazy and gray, and there’s no vibrancy to the composition. For this reason, L’Insoumis gets an unenthusiastic thumbs down. It’s not terrible, and it doesn’t smell BAD, but it’s certainly not good; it’s boring for sure; and it’s kind of a let down from Lalique, whose standard releases have been very solid up until now.

Just tried this one again today,
this is a very nice scent that has a
    balsamic coconut vibe to it,
i can see this working well at the

clean scent trail that is very addictive.
Very classy scent, at least i think so.

I can understand the poor reviews for L’Insoumis. Anything with a similarity to Dior Sauvage is doomed.
L’Insoumis is a strong, cold weather appropriate fragrance. It smells like John Varvatos Vintage with the synthetic fresh portion of Sauvage put on top.
I like the way this smells but it bothers me. I’m sensitive to certain scents and this is one of them.

A very nice green aromatic fougere with a little soft sweet booziness into the mix. Something along the lines of Guerlain Homme perhaps? Or Green Irish Tweed? Not sure – it does remind me of something though, might even be one of my shaving creams. Is it earth shattering and groundbreaking? No. Is it a gorgeous masculine scent that gets compliments, has good performance and reeks of quality and class? Yes – that’s why I bought it. There was an open slot for this type of scent in the Lalique stable and they have filled it nicely – a perfect option for the modern executive alongside the likes of Dunhill Icon and Platinum Egoiste. Amazing bottle design, as always.

I personally quite like this one. Don’t understand all the hate. People should judge the fragrance on it’s own and not compare to other releases from the house.

Modern, smooth, tranquil, masculine. Inoffensive. Fairly linear throughout. Reminds me of the drydowns of Drakkar Noir, Gucci by Gucci PH2, etc. The drydown and light yet smooth/masculine nature is what ‘got’ me to get this frag. Not groundbreaking or a must-buy but still very nice to have and wear when you just want to smell nice. Versatile for anywhere really. I feel earthy/fresh/freshspicy fragrances fare better in environments where people are close together but dont want to be bombarded with strong or exotic scents – perfect for the office and other casual or formal events.
If you have wifi and can read this review (like I couldnt –
forcing me to impulse buy this)- check prices and availability and get yourself a good deal. I spent over twice what you can buy this for online which is my only regret.
UPDATE: So thiss is what Basil smells like.. I suppose. The scent is alluring at a normal spritz-level. When you spray more to really decipher what it is all about, you might pick up on something particularly unique (not bad or good, depends on your take on).. Basil! I notice that this is also in Calvin Klein’s ‘Truth’ ..so apparently the note is at least somewhat alluring to me. I spent an equivalent $100USD on this bottle in the Gulf region but I would not pay more than half of that for a future bottle If I choose to do so. I do NOT regret buying this though, I still find myself spraying this on generously and enjoying it and am happy, in these hot periods of the year, that I am not blowing people out of the water with something overbearing.

  32. :

    3 out of 5

    To answer you ikuone.
·In store I liked it SO MUCH I bought it immediately, breaking my usual buying protocol.
·The first day I actually used it I didn’t get what I got at the store but I still liked it, can’t say I didn’t.
·Back at my place a few hours later after a meeting my wife told me to over spray it some more so she could smell it (though this perfume has long duration and projects a lot so don’t be confused, she said that just for testing purposes and she always want me to over spray my perfumes, that’s the way she likes it). I would recommend not to over spray this perfume, is very strong (and I don’t need to to have the intensity that I personally like but others might differ of course); after over spraying it, it resulted in a very harsh scent, unpleasant to me, not sure how to describe it due to my inexperience but I would say too spicy (I started to feel a burning sensation in my arms).
So, in my opinion, is a very good scent as long as you don’t over spray it. Also, is eau de toilette but to me it feels as parfum or at least eau de parfum, with good longevity (as a non-expert I can’t really say anything about projection and sillage since I’m the one wearing it but I think that at least the projection should be very good. I’ll have to test it on my wife :D). One other thing, in the store it felt very unique, the reason why I grabbed it; now I notice a common note in my other perfumes but still it stands apart. No regrets, I would give it a score higher than the current one here, for sure above 4.

A very “meh” fragrance. Not bad but nothing special/
The bottle, though, amazing! The black sides are painted carved glass not rubber. Beautiful!

  36. :

    5 out of 5

I don’t think is boring at all, and as Lalique fan, I would say is not a disappointment but a nice new experience. I just bought this one as long as I found it available online and I am wearing it today for the 1st time. I got compliments right away at work, and I was even asked what was I wearing, since people around the office know I wear a different frag everyday, and this one got good reviews. Is more of half of the day gone and I can still smell it on me without sniffing my wrist or chest, it has evolved nicely I can really smell the lavender now which is the least rated ingredient on top, the moss and vetiver have come out more noticeable. I would not put this one as a winter fragrance only, but totally for the fall and spring as well, I would give it a try in the summer to see how it performs on hot weather. I know is was release in Fall-Winter season, but the fragrance has quite some notes that makes it suitable for summer as well, but will see then.
And only two persons (me included) wearing it in the Fragrantica community as noted,,, it make me feel exclusive.. lol

Ok. I have this now on my hand. This fragrance is almost IDENTICAL to fou d’absinthe by l’artisan.
I don’t know how they have made this, but in the opening and middle notes it’s 99,9% similar to that.
I prefer this to fou d’absinthe.
It really evokes being on a forest, a dark and wet piney forest
    but…. WAITTTT… magic is made.
the drydown is( and if you don’t believe, TRY IT) VERY VERY VERY VERY similar to STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN.
and I’m not exaggerating. Opening is Fou d’absinthe and middle and mostly drydown is a copy of STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN….

A very boring frag , quite inferior to the older ones from Lalique. As for the bottle looking like Ferragamo, my guess is that Lalique being a glass art producer for over a century was copied by them.

Every new release by Lalique was a reason of celebration for any perfume lover. We had so many incredible and unique concepts for every perfume, superb bottles and reasonable prices. But inside this really beautiful bottle there is a totally uninspired and cheap fragrance which makes it a huge disappointment. I understand the commercial reasons that force the companies to make those kinds of fragrances but in any case there is no reason to buy something that smells like AXE, just go and get it from the super market.

Unfortunayely, L’Insoumis surprised me in a negative way. Imagine an ambroxany freshness of Sauvage combined with minty heart of Bleu de Chanel. That would be the new Lalique! Generic, synthetic, doesn’t last long. Couldn’t be compared to Encre Noire and even to Hommage.
However, I do understand that Lalique tries to catch younger audience, and the fresh aromatic composition of L’Insoumis smells modern enough for this aim.

Very nice looking bottle and the notes sound like something I can get with.

People in the trade often get to sample fragrances before their official release. No mystery.
