L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme Issey Miyake for men of Issey Miyake

Share:

Description

Issey Miyake uses very unusual and rare materials in order to create perfumes that evoke the sense of timeless freedom and serenity. L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme was created as a universal Eau de Toilette perfect for any occasion.

L’Eau d’Issey for Men is a woody aquatic fragrance with yuzu as in top notes, along with notes of bergamot, lemon and tarragon. A middle note is spicy and woody: nutmeg and water lily are an exciting and unexpected accord in this composition. An end note carries an intense woody scent which is sharp and enriched with tobacco, sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and musk. It was created by Jacques Cavallier in 1994.

Two editions in new flacons but with the same compositions were introduced in 2009 – L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme and L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme Intense. Colours of the flacons – light grey and dark grey colour of asphalt make an impression of a union of water and concrete.

This was my daily fragrance for work for around 8 years until around 2 years ago.I’m assuming it’s been reformulated as the last couple of bottles I’ve had haven’t performed anywhere near as well as the previous ones which is a shame. The sillage from the older bottles was fantastic, I used to get a few compliments (male and female) per day and could still smell it on myself at the end of the working day (with 2 spritzes on the chest and one on the nape of my neck). At it’s peak it was a beautiful, fresh compliment-getter.
I’ve changed to the intense version which performs slightly better and has it’s on twist on the original fragrance, it’s a bit more grown up.

Instant love. My first fragrance ever and still one of my absolute favourites. Some might think it’s a little boring or mainstream perhaps. To me, it has that interesting note that makes it simple yet quite sophisticated to my nose.
I’m very emotionally attached to this fragrance, brings back good memories.

Molto agrumato, fresco.

probably the people who dont like this , have tried the new formula i think. the old formula was more woody and smelled like pure innocence .

For me this fragrance is totally so BAD, that i am really wondering how it can get so many like and love vote…
Smells like the famous insecticide Chemotox for me..

This is a very citrusy fragrance. I like it but not too much. It is unique.. but it is too lemony and more yuzu fruit (Smells bitter citrus. that’s what it makes more unique). And Lasts longer. It gives me headaches as I can smell it everytime when I spray. It is intense citrus fragrance. Good for slim and tall guys above 21.
    Overall 6.5/10

Such a good modern fresh scent.
Natural, fresh watery lotus with warm tobacco and woods.
Lotus has an incredible aqueous floral scent,
it’s nice to experience it to such a great effect in a masculine fragrance.
Unique, great for high heat, ladies find it sexy, perfect summer freshness.

Thanks for folks on this site recommending. This juice is a game changer. Can’t beleive I’ve been missing out all these years. I just got my first bottle as the after shave. It’s especially unique because it begins as really mild, then projects more and more within the first hour. Then selttles to a yearning lusty scent. It’s awesome!!! Reminds me of Curve a bit, but better. Has a young masculinity about it. Super duper seeexxxxyyyy!!!

Smell of late 90’s and early 2000’s. Sweet citrusy unique fragrance. It is a smell like no other.

Popular citrus. Middling performance. Does not smell as good as others in its own arena. I would not buy this.
Edit: gave a full heavy wear today. Citrusy top. Im gonna go decent performance, especially good for a light scent. I just keep thinking i smell like soap. Good smelling soap.
    Maybe a touch unisex.

For me I get this sharp grapefruit sour blast that I love. Even thou grapefruit isn’t listed my nose keeps giving me this vibe. Very good Florida 11 month out of the year scent. Very good longevity for a citrus scent 6-8 hours + , surprised I’ve waited this long till recently to come across this. The sharpness note reminds me of Terre D’hermes. TDH – sharp orange blast compared to this sour grapefruit blast. Very very nice fragrance.

Upon initial spray it’s got a sharp citrus burst, that some might find a little too much, but give it time send it settles. I do get compliments with it, so I would say it’s an inoffensive freshie. It’s nothing ground breaking or overly unique, but still a solid summer fragrance. I don’t see myself buying it again, but I will use up the bottle I have.

@Donjuandemarc- I have noticed L’eau D’Issey being reformulated perhaps several times, and the chances of finding those great years (1994 to early 2000’s) are slim to none…especially kept in a pristine, fresh quality…however, you can still find the “pre IFRA” formulations out there. I have noticed that there is a way you can find these by looking at the front of the bottle…earlier versions had “eau de toilette” etched below the top 2 lines (L’eau D’Issey and Pour Homme). Newer bottles have that missing, or so I have compared. If anyone else knows of a different way, I am open to comment? It just so happened that that difference correlated to the batch code from bottles I have had

Can someone tell how to spot a vintage bottle of it on the bottle?

  17. :

    4 out of 5

Back when this first came out, when I was still in High School, this was one of the first bottles I ever owned. I loved the opening which reminded me of lemon italian ice or frozen lemonade from Hershey Park. I remember going through bottles rather rapidly because I was fixated on the top notes and was constantly reapplying. I can’t even tell you what the later phases and drydown smelled like because they weren’t memorable to me. I wonder what this smells like 24 years later? I’ll have to try it next time I’m at a Sephora or Macy’s to see if it’s the same.

I find myself going back and forth on my opinion of this fragrance. It’s a pleasant, unique and inoffensive citrus scent but I find it’s just lacking a certain depth to really make me fall in love with it.

  19. :

    4 out of 5

Citrus opening is quite piercing. But the dry down is powdery, clean woody scent which I absolutely like 15 years ago.
The scent is old school, that is the reason i’ll not repurchasing this again
    Scent: 8/10
    Projection 8/10
    Longevity 8/10
Suitable User: Recommended for mature men

First impression: Difficult to describe. Very busy. Feminine (although not in a “strictly for women” way). I can’t make out individual notes.
Retrying later – Pink and red flowers. Feminine. Amber/wood in the background but it’s subtle. Citrusy but it blends in with other scents. Too floral for me.
8 and 24 hours later – This is growing on me a bit. Citrusy. Still too floral. I sort of like it but would not wear it. Maybe once I have a more experienced nose, am a little older, or start to dress in more mature clothing I will get new appreciation for this one.

After the weird opening which lasts twenty minutes it becomes fresh, lemony and dry scent.
Reminds me of Acqua Di Gio, and it smells better after one hour.
    Excellent fragrance.

Does anyone know anything about the Concrete Edition / Edition Beton / On The Rock version from 2009? Maybe it is better than the current formulations of L’eau d’Issey?

Jack Daniels with Fanta lemon; sofocating, cloying, excessively sweet, synthetic,no depth perception, there is nothing I like about it. Once upon a time was very popular.

  25. :

A Jacques Cavallier masterpiece. For it to be a citrus scent, it’s so elegant in it’s simplicity. I just love the way it smells, the compliments every time I wear it, and how it makes me feel. An energizing and invigorating scent that will always be in my arsenal.

  26. :

    5 out of 5

L’eau d’Issey Pour Homme starts out as a salty aquatic, similar to Acqua di Gio’s top notes. After half an hour, it greets us with aromatic florals. The dry down is woody with aquatic qualities. I find it very masculine without being overbearing. Projection is arms length.

  27. :

Seriously this is hyped to the roof. It smells OK, but only OK, nothing more. Not bad, but not that good either. A bit sharp, but I would pass on how it smells, I could forgive it, but … Performance, however, is a joke, really. It lasts nowhere more than an hour and it’s gone. And yes, I have the real deal, my bottle is not fake. meaningful Silage is there for a few minutes then it’s a skin scent, no matter how much I spray and I spray a lot. Long story short, all you hear about this is either from uninformed or misleading people. Those who got it working for them might have the very old formulation, if this formulation works for you, then good luck, but not for me.

    Longevity – 9/10(9+ hours)
Silage/Projection – 8,5/10(moderate to heavy projection and silage for the first 2-3 hours, than sits closer to skin for the duration of the scent’s evolution)

This fragrance reminds me a lot of Japan. I purchased a sample through Scent Leopard 2 weeks ago, and I love it the same way as when I first tried it a few years ago. The opening is cirtusy and sharp. The composition turns a bit flowery in the heart, and woody in the drydown. One of the best fresh fragrances ever!

I’m not sure who’s the moderator for these reviews that feel the need to delete my reviews because I suppose it’s not to their liking-
but I’m going to repost my original sentiment towards this:
It smells like Mosquito spray- alright?
Putting this on literally felt like my skin was burning for several seconds, i never had this happen before- the sample is new and was kept in a cool place so no, it wasn’t warm or anything.
the opening is a really harsh start and it continues to be a very heady, unapologetic synthetic citrus with a TINNGGEE of floral and alcohol
It doesn’t seem really masculine to me, I can see women wearing this (if they dared to) as it feels very unisexual.
I can’t recommend this whatsoever, I’m surprised people give this such praise.

Amazing classic frag. This gem is a summertime beast. I sprayed some on my arm to test it at 9 pm and it filled the area around me. It is now 5:54 am and even after a shower it is still on my skin. I have a 4.2 ounce bottle on the way. I will definitely be checking out more from his fragrance house. I’m a fan for life.

I could wear l’Eau d’Issey pretty much anytime, except during cold weather.
This is a pleasing mix of Yuzu, Lotus and Vetiver. And… So many other notes. This is a fragrance that has a lot to offer, but everything comes in a nice mix that doesnt seem too complex and random.
Sometimes, at home, I spray like 10-12 of this just to get the feel. To me, it doesnt get to the head. It’s not so white. It’s more, like a yellow scent. Take it for what it is.
Believe it or not, some people got urine from this. I bet it’s the geranium. It does it sometimes. But it only last seconds to my nose, then it becomes the flower that has a job to do in the scent and it does it well.
Special mention for the yuzu. If you want to smell like yuzu, there it is.
In the end, l’Eau d’Issey is a complex scent that doesnt feel complex, but rather shining and inviting. It is refreshing even within the depth of it’s base notes.
It has been there for so long. It has been reformulated. Like everything else mostly. Still, l’Eau d’Issey manages to take a spot in the refreshing type of fragrances.
It doesnt compare. It’s artistic but crafted to be safe.
    Thanks for reading my review!

    Been wearing this for years.
In the morning, it makes my empty stomach turn with how sharp and citrusy it is at first, but it mellows out and has a very sweet and refined body to it that I haven’t noticed with anything else.
It’s great on a really hot day.

Only just put this on. Airy, aquatic, green, … floral, but less so than green. Brings to mind opening the window first thing of a summer’s morning.
Good, good – it’s mounting, like a good perfume should. Think this’ll turn out a sound choice. I’m taking it with me though, coz I don’t feel I can rely on its longevity. It’s also citrussy, as I’m now beginning to realise (I think it might be citrussy rather than floral, now I consider it); and even if heart & base last well, I might just fancy another blast of that gorgeous citrussy opening.
It’s still mounting – bodes well!
Now that I’ve worn this all day, it’s clear I did it a major injustice, saying I didn’t trust it not to last. I did give it a fresh spritz; but I think it was more because I’d gone to the trouble of taking it with me and for the sheer pleasure of spritzing it anew than out of any real need. It just churns out & churns out, supplying constant lovely whiffs even against not taking any particular trouble to contain it. This is the second time in a short space that I have been impressed in this way by an Issey Miyake scent.
Also, my initial impression that it was floral rather than citrus seems a bit silly now – it’s clearly much more citrussy than floral. And this in turn makes the tenacity all the more impressive: getting a citrussy scent to have decent tenacity seems a rare artform. But it’s well accomplished here, anyway.
I would say this is similar in many respects to Bottega Venetta’s Knot and MFK’s Petit Matin. I recently included these two in my thread about fragrances that are similar despite big difference in notes-list, but changed my mind about them by reason of their notes-lists not being different enough, but left them as an example of what I don’t mean. But anyway, I would say this is a fragrance very much of that sort.
I notice that the notes-list of this one is extremely complicated.

For me this is just okay.
It does project and last better than the average designer freshy and smells aright.
This fragrance is clean, inoffensive and like vanilla ice cream good, but wanting.
4 to 6 hours longevity with fair projection and sillage.
I have Aqua di gio Essenza, which smells more natural and projects better.
If you want more of a purely citrus fragrance, not aquatic, you have to get into Niche like Le Labo Bergamote 22 or Rag and Bone Bergamot as a cheaper alternative.
A great fragrance for the those new into fragrances or those that like the effortless approach.

This is my night out scent in the Summer I actually use the women’s shower gel and lotion before applying this and they do smell great together and always get people complimenting how fresh I smell the whole night. I do the same with angel body products with Amen and works wonderful in winter

One of those timeless classics. Beatiful creamy soft fragrance for summer days. And it doesn’t smell dated at all. I’m 20 and I can easily rock this thing.
Best for indoors and vacations but it’s pretty versatile and you can use it all year around.
And last thing, Forget about all flankers like summer edition 2015 and 2016. They all smell same with really weak projection.

Tried it at a department store and really liked it. Very impressive. First impressions from the smell were that it seems to use fine quality ingredients – lots of peppery punch. However, I think I sprayed too much on, on another occasion – came home and could smell a strong cat-piss stench! I really wanted to like this one, but this has turned me off. Seemed to have good staying power though – I don’t question the quality of this perfume.

  45. :

    5 out of 5

A distinct and unique fragrance with yuzu and lotus notes. Masculine touch wit exceptional floral notes is a kind of freshness just like raindrops in summer. Main disadvantage is weak longevity and silliage. I think base notes’ weakness is the main reason for weak longevity. Overall it is metophorically a kind of mayday fly. An adorable beauty with dramatic short lifetime.

  46. :

    3 out of 5

This is great! I had it years ago too…seems a whisper weaker now in my refill is all, but still mostly the same smell to my recollection. Could be unisex, as it’s floral…a l’il lotus does a lot(like the car 😛 )
For being on the market for as long as something as say…Polo Sport, this leaves that in the dust…it smells current! 🙂

  47. :

    4 out of 5

Starts off with a fresh yuzu and lemon verbana along with some sort of Oriental spices. It’s pleasant and deceptively strong. It seems to get stronger the longer I wear it, and for this reason I’d only wear max. 2 sprays at a time. It leans masculine however could be unisex. On drydown more of the spices appear. Base notes have woody notes. Sillage and longevity are both great. So far I’ve gotten one compliment on this, and was told that sillage travels all the way to metres across the room, although I couldn’t smell it that much (probably due to olfactory fatigue). Overall it’s a very unique fragrance due to the strong and long-lastung yuzu note; it smells very “Japanese”. Bottle design is also amazing and done in this minimalistic Japanese Zen sort of style.
UPDATE: I can only give this a 3.5/5 because the modern reformulation has totally ruined this fragrance – the yuzu is extremely weak while the warm spices are very strong. If you want something in a similar style but far better, go for L’eau d’Issey pour homme Fraiche by Issey Miyake.
    3.5/5

  48. :

    4 out of 5

L’Eau d’Issey for men by Issey Miyake is a woody floral aquatic that owes its dynamism to yuzu (Japanese citrus). Its spicy and woody heart is also nervous thanks to the nutmeg mixed with the water lily. The background is intense and woody with amber tobacco and sandalwood, giving vigor, energy and depth to this EDT yet very fresh. This fragrance for the summer is the touch of well being that one needs when summer and holidays are approaching. Toning and refreshing, it suddenly reveals peppermint and orange extracts associated with original notes such as grapefruit. This beauty is one of my signature scents since 1997. The most beautiful summery citrus floral I have ever worn. A unique fragrance since nothing was smelling like it back in a days and it’s still the case nowadays. The old formulation was lasting for ages. The new one have less longevity and is less potent but it’s still decent. A masterpiece in my opinion.

  49. :

Bought it yesterday and what they say about the reformulation is true…The beginning is like the vintage, but disappears quickly, where in the vintage one, stayed throughout the whole day…waisted money 🙁

I don’t know why i’ve waited for so long to try it ! Beautiful scent upon first spray, you get that zesty, bitter citrusy vibe, it’s bright, clean and has that unique spiciness i guess due to nutemeg mostly and don’t know why it reminds me of the incense of the church. It’s also true what’s been said below that it doesn’t last after the reformulation, not more than an hour and it’s gone, you have to digg your nose to be able to smell it. Too bad!

This in its time was very innovative…!
Very very flowery, almost feminine, but masculine at the same time!
For me only a handful of scents cannot be mistaken for anything else and this is one of them!!!
Love it or loathe it, nothing smells like it…
This is my third bottle (I bought last year) but I do not know what batch it is (I cannot detect any difference from the original I bought in 1996)
For me this is the definition of what summer smells like…
Subtle smell, but lasts and projects well!!
I understand why this scent is not for everyone but for me this belongs to my top 10 of all time!!!
    Iconic and now a classic!!!
    Thank you Mr Cavalier!!

This is a great scent, the citrus, in my opinion, is perfectly blended in with the other notes. This fragrance is great for a summertime day trip in a foreign country when you are wearing a white tee and sandals and it is very hot. This fragrance’ s scent is cooling and refreshing.
However, there is a serious problem with its unpredictability with the projection and silage because this fragrance almost reacts to surrounding conditions and because of this you can’t be sure how well it will perform and on most occasions it doesn’t break 3 hours of good silage, as for me I always have a better option like Acqua di Gio Essenza, Bulgari’ s Aqua Amara or Dolce Gabbana light blue or sometimes even CD eau Sauvage Parfum- not ‘sauvage’ but the original ‘eau sauvage’.

One of those fragrances I will see shelved when I have gran kids and I’m yet to get married so do that math.
Wonderful, gorgeous and distinct top notes (which I love) will drive this fragrance and continue to for years to come.
    Sillage – 7/10
    Longevity – 6/10
    Scent – 8/10
I love how the top notes intertwine with the basenotes to the point that even hours later people know you’re rocking Issey Miyake

  58. :

This is one of more unusual perfume scents, which I first tried while in Mexico on summer vacation and it blended fantastic with hot summer days, beach and so on. Then, I purchased one in 2014, and it smelled the same but sillage was about 1 hour max. Just to mention that original one also had very poor sillage, maybe 90 mins, so this is very weak perfume, and unfortunately is not worth of buying. Better choice is ADG Profumo which has similar vibe as Miyake.
Unortunately almost all perfumes today last very short, cost a lot and are useless. I remember wearing of Aramis in 80’s I was smelling it for hours and even my clothes for days, not to mention original Kouros. But that times are gone and Mercedes or Volvo are not that good as they used to be. Shame.

And while I’m at it .. again, I’ll tell you a secret.. what people don’t know is this is way way better in the very cold winter.. actually the best there is… and I can’t stand this in the summer… the complexity of notes completely change in various climates and winter is the best. Try it.

tested it on my skin & neither me nor my wife liked it! i was about to chop my arm to get rid of the disgusting smell !!
don’t believe the hype, better to test any fragrance first.

Do not be fooled by the lightness of this fragrance. I cannot smell it from my skin after 20-30 minutes but other people can smell it 6 feet away from me even after 3-4 hours of application. I have the 2016 formulation by the way

I had to replace this classic here. I was teaching into my juice closet, and it hit the floor shattering open. Needless to say forcabout a month my house smelled of Issey miyake. What I have noticed is this bottles juice is more so clear, i remember this having a more yellowish color to it. Hopefully the formula isn’t changed so far gone. This is definitely one I wear in the evenings when the sun is fading and the heat starts to mellow.

I wish i could get the pre2008 editions… after 2008 it got reformulated and it doesn’t smell the same. Fraiche is nice but weak, I’m so disappointed as i started wearing this scent 19 years ago. and it was so much different.

People say that this fragrance have a clean smell, to my nose this is more like smell of the flowers that we put on cemetery lol , don’t like this at all.

A nice clean citrus cologne, a clasic for summer time. The performance is average for an edt and the price you pay for it is just right for what you receive.

This is an amazing scent. The citrus makes it fresh and the florals make it an interesting male fragrance option. The Yuzu keeps the citrus clean without being “lemony” or “orangey”. The florals may turn some men off, but the woody and spicy notes do keep it masculine. all in all nicely blended. A classic, IMO,…24 years old, but feels just as new and unique now as it did back when it came out. can’t speak to reformulation changes, but current bottle has good longevity and sillage on me.

This stuff is extremely underrated imo, such a great fresh/clean and masculine scent right here but no one really talks about it(Jeremy fragrance never ever talks about it)I first smelled it on one of my friends and I had to know what it was instantly and when he told me it was miyake I was thinking he got some cheap generic brand from the China store, anyways later on I searched it up and when I seen the bottle of Issey Miyake I realized that I’ve been seeing that bottle at almost every department store but I just never had the time to actually read the full name (the font size is really small) man I felt so dumb and should’ve paid more attention
    Overall rating- 8.5/10

Absolute belter of a fragrance, Masterpiece. It’s a fragrance I have always had in my collection, Reminds me of Spring/summer. Love jumping out of the shower after a workout when the weather is warm and spraying myself with this bad boy. Agree with everyone else about reformulation, First time I ever smelt this was at Youth Club in my school, It completely blew my marbles, I had never smelt anything like it! It was magical. Nowaday’s It’s definitely different to the original in ways, But it’s still a great summer fragrance though and i enjoy wearing it. This will always be a staple in my collection.

If you can get past the sour beginning then the dry down is where it’s at..

One of my next purchases. I can’t believe I have overlooked this all this time. I had its more intense brother (of which I gave away to my little brother who even wears it sparingly, now I’m feeling like an Indian giver because I want it back lol) and I was fond of it, but I either have to love if from a distance, or will myself to not over spray it.
If I could only take one old school with me into the future, surely, this would be it.
Will enjoy this all spring/summer when it gets here!

Jimmy Choo Man Ice smells very similar to this with fuller “body” and better performance. Give it a try and see what you think!

Another favorite perfume for years! With these absurd reformulations turned him into a ghost of what it was, even spraying 10 sprays I can not smell the wonderful smell he had in the past.
I am very sad, because none of my favorite perfumes have the lovely smell they once had. A feather

I will always love this cologne till death but this new reformulated version will never compare to the version of 1994-2002 formulation you can tell the difference between the two the new formulation has a lot more Florals in the top then the original formulation which was more pungent lasted longer 10 hour’s plus and if you sprayed it on clothes it will last for weeks I know this would never happen but if someone can make a clone of the original formulation I will be in heaven

I was fall in love with this perfume when I smell the sample on GQ magazine. That never got out through my mind since. It was very different though when you put it on clothes. More on masculine floral than citrusy scent. Not for everyone but I like it a lot.
    * Kakaiba talaga yung amoy nya napapalingon lalo ng kapag sumakay ako sa air conditioned na vehicles.

I thought I would love it but I just couldn’t. It smells nice on paper but doesn’t work on my skin. After the slight floral scent at the beginning, it dries down to become something musky, a bit of leather, and a bit of furniture polish for me.

Just a classic and one of the very few non-niche scents in my rotation. You can pay 5x the price for a citrus scent from Roja Dove or Xerjoff, but I promise neither will smell as good as this one.

If you like Jacques Cavallier’s creations like Bvlgari Aqva Amara for Men or Giorgio Armani Diamonds for Men, you’ll find the same Cavallier vibe from Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme too. If you like those two you might like this one as well!
On my skin these all three smell horrible. There’s an off-putting rotten smell like a small rodent that’s been dead for a week. Or sun-dried pig manure with hay. I’m not trying to be funny or to offend anyone, I’m just trying to describe the prevalent smell as good as I can by making these comparisons to real life smells.
Or maybe it’s just my taste. Because generally all these three are praised and loved.
If you think you know what this repulsive smell is, please hit me with a private message. It would be a great help!

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? It’s a classy fragrance whose spices are as distinctive as an Old Spice, for example. I have found that it layers well with Hannae Morae’s HM Eau de Parfum. The two orientals were created at about the same point in time an
