mrmi – :
It was my delight recently to come across Jodi’s article about Amygdala, several weeks after discovering the company for myself. I decided then and there I would need to make a purchase soon, but OH, which one???
It’s tough enough to choose anyway, but when confronted with such lovelies as ‘Oakmoss’ and ‘Iris’ it becomes seriously challenging. This is probably the true definition of Perfume Anxiety! After a bit of hesitation, I plunked for ‘Leather’, and was not disappointed. Far from it…
Leather arrived all the way from England approximately 10 days after my order. I was pleased it crossed the Atlantic in timely fashion and good condition. Nothing in the package was in any way crushed or damaged, and the attractive little tin marked ‘Leather’ was accompanied by a handwritten note and a cardboard placard announcing ‘Layer Me’. Utterly sweet. 😀
The scent itself? At first sniff, before skin application, I wrinkled my nose in disappointment. It smelled like absolutely nothing much. But ON skin was another matter entirely… This thing is the olfactory equivalent of sitting in a leather chair next to a smoky, deliriously REAL wood fire! Nothing artificial or contrived about the scent, it smells masterfully blended in it’s genuine simplicity.
Cons? NONE – from my point of view. Sillage and longevity are as expected for a solid scent – on the lighter side. Skin scent strength, which I experience from more or less all solids. You will smell this when hugging someone, but not otherwise. All of us should have a few of these in our wardrobe, in something this unique especially! 😉
One other possible issue: For some people, getting a leather scent that smells strongly of smoky wood fires will not be exciting. But for me, it IS, intensely so! I am especially fond of the scent Dev #2, by Olympic Orchids, and Amygdala’s take on Leather reminds me of a simplified, softer, less animalic take on the smoky goodness that is Dev #2. Dev can be overwhelming to some in it’s semi-nuclear power. It’s no detraction from the charms of Amygdala that their smoky scent is easier on sensitive noses. You could wear this around very picky people (and unless hugged) never hear a word of reproach, all the while relishing your non-conformity. 😉
Pros? Oh, so many! Budget worthy, skillfully crafted, travel friendly, quality fragrances that layer well are always a welcome addition to my wardrobe, and I relish purchasing from small businesses and independent perfumeries. (That’s a lot of positive in one sentence!) I hope everyone will try these lovely creations and keep a wonderful business like Amygdala alive for us all to enjoy. <3
There was ONE unexpected negative, however. I owned my new ‘Leather’ for less than a day before it migrated to a besotted and very happy family member. Ahem. I couldn’t keep them apart – it was love! 😉
