Description

From Auphorie: Red lanterns are often regarded as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune in Chinese culture. Red is the hue chosen for the gauze that covers the lantern, since red is considered an auspicious color that brings luck, well-being, and affluence. In this scent composition, various essences in red are skillfully blended to make this concentrated red elixir. If we could bottle a red lantern, it would smell like La Lanterne Rouge.

The scent opens with an alluring mixture of red: Juicy red mandarins, sweet red dates, ruby-colored ripe goji berries and exotic saffron, the red stigmas. As the heart notes gradually unfurl, bouquets of “Dan Gui” (red osmanthus blossoms), “Hai Tang” (crabapple blossoms) and “Mu Dan” (red peonies) emanate a delicious, airy, puffy aura of perfume that captures the floral essence of a Chinese garden. At the base, a woody accord inspired by Chinese red Dalbergia wood furniture, together with ambergris, serves as a foundation for the other notes.

Lanterne Rouge was launched in 2018. The nose behind this fragrance is Eugene Au.

Oudy-fruity red juice, similar to Baccarat Rouge 540 from Kurkdjian

    – In a place far away from anyone or anywhere, I drifted off for a moment – ★★★★★
Breathtakingly beautiful. One of the smoothest and richest scents I’ve ever laid my nose on. Lanterne Rouge fiercely opens up with an enormous deeply earthy saffron sweetened with juicy ripe mandarin and jam-like dates. The saffron is not bitter or leathery by any means, but instead showcased here in its full bloom deep red almost medicinal scent. An accord to die for. Later the mandarin takes a backseat and the thick apricot-like osmanthus joins the saffron resulting ultimately in an insanely delicious three-dimensional accord that smells almost like a roasted delicacy topped with saffron infused date syrup and caramelized apricots. Now this is what I call a true gourmand because my mouth literally waters from smelling this. Despite the thick sweetness and earthy saffron, Lanterne Rouge strangely still smells fluid, dynamic and crystal clear – on the nose it truly feels like I’m inhaling some magical scarlet liquid.
Not only is the scent technically exceptionally good, it also tells a story. It brings me back to a very special evening in Kyoto, during Hanami, when we for a celebratory evening gathered to a local park. Under the rain of pastel pink cherry blossom petals, the darkness of the night is cut by lights emanating from the street vendors stalls and the sweet scent of their local delicacies. Outside the main vendor path, trails of red lanterns guide to shrines that quietly wait for visitors to pay respect. An ephemeral moment of enveloping serenity which only occurs once in a lifetime. If Spirited Away had a scent, it would be Lanterne Rouge. Stunning work.

I ordered a few samples from this house and included this one because I was intrigued by the notes. Had I blind-tested Lanterne Rouge, I would have classed it as a high quality children’s perfume from a European house. I was thinking celebrity scent at first, but it is too round, neat and, well, sweet. I will hand it down to my ten year old niece who will probably appreciate it more.

If you get a chance to compare this to Rose Oud from Nicolai Parfumeur Createur, you may be surprised how much similar they smell.
In case of price, Rose Oud is half the price for the same 30ml, and the same high quality.
What really amazing is how different perfumers can create so similar product.
Love both creations for their vintage-like facets.

This is an extraordinary fragrance. It opens with a strong note of saffron with mandarin and red dates in the background, very suggestive. Lanterne Rouge is a complex and romantic parfume with an oriental and unique charm. It evokes enchanting places, nocturnal landscapes, lighted lanterns in streets covered with autumn leaves, the air is cold… the osmanthus in the central part is fantastic,it harmonizes with the apple blossoms and is something unique. A perfume that is difficult to forget, for me it was love right away… and I can not wait to buy the full bottle!! This is a masterpiece in my opinion… I love it.
