When I was in my early 20’s I was a huge fan of the French actor Pierre Brice. I read everything about him I could get my hands on, and in an interview he stated that he loved the smell of Joy by Jean Patou on the women he dated.
Joy was his favorite perfume, and the one he gifted to the various beautiful women he dated in his life. I just wanted to smell like a woman he would adore. So I went to a posh perfume store in Hamburg and bought a tiny bottle of the real perfume for a whopping 300 German Marks. A lot of money, especially way back then.
Well I took it out on a date with my boyfriend (who later became my husband). He made no comment. But when he went into the bathroom, a gentleman who was in the same cocktail bar for a business seminar with a bunch of other men, came over to me, fell on his knees, took my hand and sighed :”Your perfume is just intoxicating!” Well, that was a real validation for me. My future husband came out of the bathroom, and needless to say it was the first jealousy related encounter we had in our relationship. Later on in our relationship my boyfriend/husband always brought me Joy from his business trips, because of this incident it was the only perfume I liked that he could remember.
Now I just own the eau de toilette and the eau de perfume versions, and it just isn’t the same. The eau de toilette as well as the eau de perfume that my husband gifted me so often are way harsher than the pure perfume in the black bottle. I noticed this perfume is now way more affordable through Ebay than what I paid for it almost 30 years ago. So I might splurge and get me a bottle again – even if it is just for old times’ sake. This perfume draws the attention of classy, sophisticated men (Shoot, no wonder that my deceased husband didn’t react to it way back when we just started dating – no pun intended!). But seriously, this is the most ladylike perfume I ever experienced, and classy men will notice it and you right away.
And finally I was able to snag a bottle reasonably priced on Ebay. There is just no comparison to the real perfume. The perfume is light-years apart from the eau de perfume and the eau de toilette. This gem in the black bottle is divine. I was able to get my hand on a sealed bottle, and when I opened it, I couldn’t believe the difference between my other Joy bottles. This is a breathtaking fragrance – an absolute must have. GORGEOUS!

i was tempted to buy this perfume before. The review and stories lingering around the web do enticed me to own it. I tested it at harrods. Return back to the hotel. I noticed the creamy, flowery with a tinge of animalic smell i guess from those that knew..say it is castoreum , in fragrantica it is say musk..whatever the case is the animalic tinge tag along the creamy flowery smell like a tail thus..the tail envelop and release the smell creamy flower that really entice me. The next day, i just couldnt stand it have to buy it. The first reason was the smell was so attractive, the second was it is a legend on it’s own…thus owning it just prudent. I will not say that i know how the classic smell but reading through the articles about it just enough to imagine that it is close to the classics.
