I’m not a fan of this one at all. There’s not much to say about it, it’s just not my type of fragrance and I don’t find it to be pleasant smelling at all.

Very nice oud. Too bad it has no projection and becomes a faint skin scent after 5min. Like other Varvatos fragrances, well done, but zero performance.
Nonsense making fragrance if even the wearer can barely smell it.
Pass. Next one in line please!

This juice starts with slight tobacco, juniper and a saffron/cinnamon mix. Turns into a clove and rose mid to my nose. Then the oud, that is ever so slightly medicinal, leather and amber. In spite of the medicinal oud (which I really dislike) I like this juice a lot. Starting with a sample and will most likely move on to a full bottle. Enjoy!

The first Oud fragrance I have ever owned.
I’ll always associate this scent with Winter…because that’s when I purchased it and first experienced its scent.
    It’s something really special.
Very exotic …and described really well by the list of notes.
But then again…. have you ever tried to describe in words an orgasm?
It’s something you just have to experience for yourself.
All I can tell you …is that it’s worth the price of admission.
Important Sidenote : This fragrance was designed by the same perfumer that created Tom Fords Sahara Noir. If you own both ..surely you can see the similarities.

This composition is lovely, very rich and complex, and probably the best oud-based juice I’ve yet had the pleasure of smelling.
Oud is naturally bitter and sour, and this fragrance would be very off-putting except that the oud is perfectly balanced with the core Varvatos DNA: leather, cinnamon, cedar, pepper, amber, and sage. It’s almost a perfect landing pad for the oud note.
Add to that Varvatos heart some sweet tobacco, incense, and a dash of clove and nutmeg, and you have a heavenly scent.
Throughout the whole sensory experience, the oud is constantly smelling a little out of place, pulling against the sweet spice mix with its sour, almost sweat-like quality. It’s fantastic. It reminds me — using different notes, of course — of how a classic juice like Aramis works, pitting sour against sweet, sweet against spicy.
Yes, the bottle and its shiny plastic gold netting is ostentatious, and yes, the giant box it comes in is clunky and totally unnecessary, but they’re going for a certain vibe here so let’s just enjoy it.
Like most Varvatos scents I’ve tried, this one isn’t great at projection or longevity. I can still smell it on myself after 3-4 hours, but it’s definitely fading at that point and needs reapplication.
Still, I love this scent, and wear it frequently in the colder weather.

Mmmmm..”I am a man, not a little boy”..is what comes to mind when smelling this frag. Good stuff. Woody, of course, but not clobbering you over the head woodiness. All of the notes are pretty subtle and playing nicely together. I love the incense here, my nose is picky with incense notes, and the incense here is done right, by my nose. The rose is in the background, the leather is subtle. Sometimes leather notes make me feel like I am suffocating, and the leather here is delicate. Just a lovely blending of soft projection notes. Nothing overly heavy. Yes, a woody scent, to be sure, but the other notes play so nicely that nothing is too dominating here. A relaxing, comforting woody scent. I am a chick and I am not ashamed to admit I will sneak a spritz or two from my man’s dresser. In fact, this now pretty much lives in my wardrobe, not his..LOL…LOVE…❤️❤️

John Varvatos OUD – I got this a few weeks ago and have been wearing it off and on. The only note in it that I don’t care for is the Rose note. It’s just a personal preference. This is a nice Fall Oud scent. I really like it alot but I have to be in the mood for it. It is very soft and masculine though. If I’m wearing jeans an t-shirt this is not my go to. If I’m wearing a sweater, or a nice button down and am going out to dinner on a cool or cold night. This would be one I would choose. The oud note in it is nice though. I do prefer Creed’s Royal Oud though over this. It just has a more distinguished smell. That is personal preference though. Overall I like this scent and will wear it alot.

The combinations of main notes I love the best in an OUD fragrance are:
    Top – Tobacco
    Middle – Rose
    Bottom – Oud + Incense
Those notes are perfectly blended in John Varvatos Oud fragrance. I just love it. Great scent and great value for money. A very appealing oud !!!
It’s not a powerhouse but the >8 hours of practical longevity are enough.

This house simply makes amazing smelling scents. There hasn’t been one that I have tried which I didn’t like. This house really knows how to make dark scents smell great. Usually in the niche department dark scents end up being too smokey or too resinous… JV creates a very dark and deep scent, but one that actually smells appealing.. This is as good as dark rebel for me. the problem with this house and why it never gets credit is the performance. I never buy bottles because I am afraid of the shitty performance.. but when I test samples and put them on my skin and hand they really don’t seem that bad.. Maybe its not the longevity but the projection of these scents? Do they use ingredients that make you go nose blind? Why do the samples seem to have good longevity and seem decent but than everyone says they suck? I remember the only bottle I had was the original JV and I loved the smell a ton, but the performance blew..
This scent is simply a smokey, dark oud/incense scent with some sweetness that smells appealing.. its as simple as that. an appealing oud. they do an amazing job at making dark and smokey actually smell good.

This has become my favorite Varvatos offering. Finally an oud scent containing rose that manages to maintain its intense masculinity. I believe the note breakdown, as voted for by members, is right on target. The frankincense and cloves and cinnamon keep this very interesting. And even though I love tobacco, this contains just a hint of tobacco…not enough to overpower or become the central theme. I confess that I have been wearing this quite a bit this spring, and those who complain of projection problems because they like their perfumes screaming are justified. Luckily, I like my scents subtly alluring, and I never thought I would find an oud perfume to fit that bill, but this one does. I am so grateful to Mr. Varvatos style and sensabilities. This will be one of my all time favs, and I intend to store a few backups, as this is sure to be discontinued as most wonderful scents are. If you are looking for a subtle spicy, woody, oud and rose scent, look no further.

This is my fourth designer oud fragrance. I own this, jovan intense oud, dunhill icon absolute and polo supreme oud. Very medicinal, rubbery opening. Not much warmth or sweetness, woods, a very “dry” oud scent. Calms down and dissipates pretty quickly, goes close to the skin and you get some traces of sweetness.
Its life cycle from spray to faint is an hour, maybe 2. The scent is not bad but not enough oomph. Especilaly not for 150 full retail. I got this for 50 on fragrance.net, even less due to a gift card i had gotten. At 50 it is borderline worth a buy for someone wanting an introductory oud fragrance. I love the varvatos one but I am not sure id buy this again. I personally feel dark rebel and rebel rider are much more compelling and much darker than this.
The only oud i own worth their retail price tag is the jovan intense oud and polo supreme oud. Jovan gives you that medicinal rubbery vibe (a lot like varvatos but zero sweetness). Polo supreme oud is heads and shoulders above the ones i own. Icon absolute is very good though in its own right but varvatos? Falls flat and i probably would not purchase again.

Update: I lied…. I did buy it again. Well I restocked on in. It became one of my favo’s..
Am I wearing a new cologne every day? Well almost 😉
First time for JV Oud , and I like this one but I think it has very low sillage and it just sits very close to the skin. It’s been just barely an hour that I put it on, so I need to see how it will perform during the day, but I am afraid is going to get lost.
The packing and bottle are very luxurious and niche like, pricey as a niche on the main perfume sites, but could be found cheaper if you look around. Is it worth it? to be continued…
Ok is the end of the day, more than 12 hrs since the application and a there’s still a a very close to the skin trace of the fragrance. But I got two compliments at the very dry down, probably at the 7 and 8 hour but none during the opening and initial dry down.
The oud note is the one that prevails till the very end and close to the skin.
I won’t buy this at the $150 that is being sold at nordstrom, and the 48 I paid at fragrancenet seems fair, now would I buy it again? most likely not. Is good for my oud collection but not on the top ones.
    Overall a 7/10 fragrance.
    Update 11/14/16:
I guess I lied, yes I bought it again, but I have been complemented every time I wear it and I did come to like it as much as well.. I think it has a normal longevity and sillage, I don’t know what’s the fuzz about around the reviews here.. there are many fragrances with the same sillage or longevity, I think it last what it has to last, that’s all.

I purchased this fragrance through a decant subscription service and honestly I didn’t expect much. I hardly purchase colognes after receiving it as a decant, because, although I may enjoy a scent, I rarely find myself falling in love with a cologne. Ladies and gentlemen, I must say, this is one of those colognes I fell in love with. To me, it provides a similar feeling that I experience with Blue de Chanel edp: I know it’s there, everyone around me knows that it is there, but we all “act” cool during the experience, as if the cologne is an irrelevant addition to the moment. People (ladies) will find a way to stick around me once they have noticed the cologne. It’s less of a scent and more of an Aura.
As I said above, I don’t usually come across fragrances that push me to purchase a full bottle, but this fragrance is different from other scents. I know that this cologne is “pricey”, and that it lacks performance, compared to a club-type fragrance, but, it is absolutely worth the money if you can easily justify wearing it.
Fyi, I also received “Reflection man” by Amouage, which I plan on purchasing, But I knew JV Oud was the better investment from a practical perspective.

Very similar to Versace Oud Noir. This seems to have less spice – a bit cleaner. Overall, I get the same terrible performance out of this as I do oud noir. Regardless, I’m loving the smell and imo, Varvatos is the closest designer to being niche. Quality, presentation and smell – all there. Performance is lame – carry a decant.

nice oud fragrance (personally I don´t like ouds, but this one is ok and wearable) with great longevity (10-14 hrs) and subtle projection.

Very soft Oud, very middle eastern smelling. I honestly really like this. I smelled it back to back with Tom Ford Wood Oud and It’s a different scent but they share a similar oud at least. This is a solid choice for an Oud that isn’t offensive and still smells interesting enough to keep smelling your wrist. Well executed. The longevity was ok, performance decent. For me, I would only buy it discounted but not for full price. Pretty unique for a designer, and his best fragrance by far. For me, if it performed a bit better I’d recommend this higher. Better to me than versace oud, I’d say it’s the best designer oud outside of TF (which this one is more unique but doesn’t perform quite as well).

This is a very underrated scent IMO. Varvatos has some really good scents, but they have suffered from performance issues. This one is an exception on my skin. It has both a great scent as well as good performance.
JV Oud starts with the traditional JV original base with a touch of JV vintage and adds in Oud and Rose. It is a refined oud, not the barnyard variety of Oud. Beautifully done and well balanced. 4 hours in the traditional JV scents go away and I am left with the rose / oud combination. It reminds me of a lighter version of Montale Black Aoud. A great scent!
I get good projection and great longevity (8 to 10 hours) on my skin.
Bottom line: If you like oud scents, you should try this. If you have been put off my the performance or JV in the past, you should try this one.

  24. :

    4 out of 5

For being an oud scent there is not that much oud to my nose. I got the whole spice cabinet in here! Lots of warm spices such as cardamon, nutmeg, cloves…etc. I get a floral touch from rose/jasmine. There is definitely amber, tobacco, leather, and resin in the base with only a touch of oud to round it out. Performance is better then other JV frags (4-7 hrs) but not worth asking msrp. If it makes it to discount websites try before you buy but look at other oud scents first i.e. versace oud.

  25. :

I Don’t know why this fragrance isn’t as popular as it should be maybe not many know about it but this is a beautiful smelling fragrance the oud is just lovely! I was worried about projection and longevity issues but thats not a problem I easily get 6-8 hours with this bad boy! Smells extremely expensive but can be bought for about 150 dollars definitely worth the price because it Smells very unique and a beautiful oud based fragrance to have in my collection!
    Projection – 9
    Longevity – 9
    Sillage – 9

Whaddaya think, guys, like the notes listed above, eh?
It starts off well enough–warm, spicy, oudy without being sharp and obnoxious, and it mimics the musky floralcy, woody and resinous aspects of oud. The sales associate kept insisting this contained real oud, maybe so, I think it might’ve been a combo of real and synthetic, but she couldn’t convince me that this was premium oud. I explained that there was the common form, and there was the stuff you had to trade your children for it. She insisted that it was the latter. I bet she didn’t even smell the real stuff. At $165 a bottle, you’re paying for the fancy perfume style presentation box and gold filagree and inlaid cap.
The scent tries to be Tom Ford’s Tobacco Oud, but comes across rather thin yet warm with a cheap smelling sweetness. The oud surfaces ok from the sweetness, but doesn’t stay around enough long for the after party of stale sugar cookies and warm punch. I passed on this one and chose RL Supreme Oud instead.

Another lackluster effort from the house of lackluster efforts. As I expected performance sucks all around. 1 hour of sillage and then it’s a skin scent for 2 more hours and then it’s gone. Judging by the pyramid you would think that this would compete with some of the other top oud scents but sadly it’s just for show. As someone mentioned in a year or so from now the price will drop below 100 dollars and even at that price Versace’s Oud scent is a better buy.

  30. :

    3 out of 5

This doesn’t remind me of anything I’ve sampled before. Slightly sweet resin, mild incense, and amber are what stick with this fragrance throughout its entirety. There are some florals off the top, but they go away quickly. This is actually not bad at all.

  31. :

    5 out of 5

Vaguely reminiscent of Amouage Epic for men, like a lesser version thereof. Not getting nearly as much rose as others – primarily a peppery oud incense myrrh scent here. Nutmeg’s playing a nice supporting role in the opening like it does in Epic, but not as much. If you like it, you’ll surely be able to find it on discount websites for under $60 within the year. Not a terrible entry into the designer oud game, but definitely too late.
Edit: scratch that, sampled again and there’s definitely a dominant rose note from the get go, as well as saffron. Similarities to Epic quite minimal; my nose must have been fatigued after a long day of sniffing.
Edit 2: As of July 24th 2016, it’s now under $50 on fragrancenet. Called it!

  32. :

Can’t get the oud note at all! Mostly incense! Some labdanum and amber but mostly incense. Fairly light for an incense scent. Not much projection and doesn’t last.

  33. :

Not what I was expecting!! I saw this at Nordstrom. First off the bottle looks really nice but after touching it I noticed it is a cheap tacky gold plastic around the bottle. They should’ve left that off. The box was nice, big, and sturdy. I sprayed it on a strip. Bit hit of woody spice. Then it dried down into a spicy floral phase. Lastly the sweet medicinal oud base creeped in. Overall I was left with a sweet, spicy, oud scent dominated by oud, rose, and sweet notes. The floral rose was too prominent and the oud was too soft to be an oud scent but also added a medicinal quality that I did not like. If you want an oud try niche brands and just pay a little more because this is not a cheap cologne at $150!!! Overall I have to give this a “dislike”.

  34. :

    3 out of 5

If you like oud wood, then this one I for you. In fact the oud is so pronounced that it is difficult to detect any other notes. Good for those who like the dark inky oud wood, but not for me.

  35. :

    5 out of 5

Finally tried this one out, very enjoyable scent. The oud is there but it is mellow. Rose comes on too strong and that’s the main reason this is not my favorite. Myrhh is present and it makes it dark and dense. Its a good scent nonetheless, but just not what I expected from JV. Needs more Rock n Roll.
