Scent 79 is a beautiful scent. I do not care much about describing the notes. In my opinion, a perfume is a good example of synergy: it is more than simply the sum of its components. Perhaps, I am not that far into understanding and analyzing perfumes. I prefer to view a scent as a whole.
What I can say is that I think it is an evening perfume. Normally I do not hesitate to wear anything at any time of the day. However, Scent 79 just doesn’t make much sense as a day scent for me. Plus the lasting power and sillage are very high. On my shelf this perfume stands right next to YSL M7, another definitely evening perfume.
I cannot say it is a old-fashioned fragrance. I’m into classy but new, clean, simple kinds of things. My favourite house is Comme des garçons. So, to me, while it definitely does smell like something from late seventies, it is a totally wearable and modern. Perhaps, exactly on a person that is too young to have had the original version, this smells like an homage to the past, not a dated bottle from a dusty bathroom shelf.
My friend bought it in Germany and was kind enough to give it to me. He said that this was how movie stars had smelled in 1979. Judging by how long the 100ml bottle lasted so far, I will be ‘famous’ for at least another 15 years 😉
To me it is identical to Jil Sander Scent 79 in a round bottle which I understand is still available now in early 2015, just in case you would like to try.

It was my favorite in the eighties when it was called “Man Pure”. I don’t agree that it is so outdated, I think it’s quite classic and still has a lot complexity in it. I don’t believe that Scent 79 is a different composition than the old “Man Pure”, according to my remembrance it comes very close to the original or is really identical. But at least in Germany it is unfortunately sold in a real uninspired bottle, couldn’t made it less attractive.
Most probably tastes have changed, but I not only still like it, I even feel that me changing is more the reason it isn’t a perfect fit for me anymore than anything else. Just a bit too much wood for me now, but wonderful to make me remember those old days…

This one was starts out as a dry/smoky fragrance, granted by sage and incense. Bad? No, but isn’t good as well.
Trough time, the floral heart appears, giving a new aspect to this fragrance, but it doesn’t last long…
At the base we finally have a hint of vetiver dominated by a leather smell, which in my opinion, is the best part of this fragrance. Longevity and projection isn’t that good when we are talking about Scent 79… Overall, this is pass to me.

This is a new scent (along with the women’s version) to commemorate the anniversary of Jil Sander’s fashion house: 30th anniv 1979-2009. While it pays homage to the original Jil Sander men’s fragrances it is actually an entirely new composition that could best be described as woody-incense along the lines of the CDG Incense series. Not at all a retro composition as one might think of late ’70’s scents, but rather very much in keeping with the current incense craze. I sometimes think of it as a Lalique Encre Noir “Extreme”. There are also two markets for Jil Sander fragrances – currently run by Coty out of their European offices (Europe and Asia), not all of the scents are available on the American market.

Oh my, I got it by mistake instead of Jil Sander Man, and what a trick.. this is really the seventies, old and unmemorable, the kinda scent you’d see your father and grandfather wearing…
    Wrong choice for sure

For as far as I know, Scent 79, unlike Jil Sander Woman III and Bath and Beauty, is on their official website. Although it is from 1979, it is a current release.
But there’s something strange with the Jil Sander scents..it is as if they come and go. Where shop-owners tell me that a Jil Sander-scent is ‘off the market’ (like for instance is the case with Jil Sander Woman III), Coty (who took over from Lancaster)tells me that it is still available…
Jil Sander Woman III has been away before and after it’s come-back, again is now hard to get.
Here in the Netherlands I’ve not yet seen scent 79, neither for women nor for men…(excuse my English..)
