Hydrangea is an odd number. To my nose it’s primarily a sweaty white floral, that flickers between lush and soapy over the wear time.
It opens with wonderful, and surprisingly indolic jasmine. Within a few minutes however, it’s joined by a soapy, cloying, fairly nebulous white floral note, that I suppose is hyacinth. Unfortunately the mix of the two is a little sickly for me. Bringing to mind old fashioned soaps pressed into little flower shapes.
Through the dry down it gets a little dry and powdery, not at all aquatic as the Fragrantica notation suggests. The iris is barely-there, lending more texture than body to the composition. I detect no violet or cedar anywhere in the drydown, indeed the late drydown turns rather softly vanillic on my skin.
Ultimately there’s quite a lot here to like. It’s an interesting take on a white floral. Not at all shrill, instead, rather grey and melancholy. If not for the soapiness threading in and out of this, it would be a firm ‘like’.
Projection is at the low end of moderate. As is longevity. Enjoy on warm, rainy days. Jump in a puddle.
