Horizon has to be one of the most disgusting colognes i have ever smelled, This cologne is so ANTI-GQ in every way!period!

A partly fitting name I daresay, for normally it should be called Event Horizon; and whoever lays claim to even an iota of astrophysics ken will easily understand the reason why.
You see, since 1993 (when it was launched) and afterwards, not even a slight speck of quality has managed to escape from the black hole that the house of Guy Laroche has turned into. And this renders Horizon the very last remarkable fragrance, and by the same token the swan song, of an once legendary house.
Is it an aquatic? Yes, it is. But forasmuch as all florals are not the same, Horizon is not yet another aquatic.
It’s the difference between the sea that lies in front of a blissful angler who is fishing from a peaceful pier and enjoys the light breeze on his face and the ocean that tries to drown with gigantic waves a seasoned, die-hard engineer who fights to survive the tempest that is raging all around him on a oil platform in the North Sea.
It’s the difference between Nemo and Moby Dick.
It’s the difference between the warm and friendly waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the frigid dark waters of the hadal zone in the Mariana Trench.
It’s the difference between a plastic speedboat which is flauntingly driven by nouveaux riches as a status symbol in swank seaside resorts and an old wooden moliceiro which despite its small size doesn’t hesitate to venture deep into the Atlantic Ocean.
It’s the difference between the smell of the hairspray that is holding the expensive coiffe of a chichi mermaid who’s dabbling and giggling in the shallows of some upscale island the likes of Mykonos and the smell of the seaweed adorned hair of the brooding mermaid who emerges from the depths mid-sea to ask you if Alexander the Great is still alive.
It’s a sapphire compass that will navigate you towards the point where you’ll finally decide who and what you truly are.
    A goldfish or a shark?…
P.S.: In Greek lore the sister of Alexander the Great, devastated with the news of his demise, took her own life by drowning herself into the sea. But gods, deeply moved by such selfless devotion, spared her life and turned her into a mermaid. Legend has it that thenceforth she sometimes rises to the surface and asks passing ships if her brother is still alive. If the sailors will respond that he lives and rules and still conquers new lands she will let them sail away and will bestow them with fair weather. But if they will respond that her brother is long dead she will become livid and sink the ship in a maelstrom.

This is one of my favorites green aquatic scents. So mysterious and deep, a lot of people will move far from it cause it’s so unique and some way enigmatic.
I adore it and I wear it when I am in the right mood for it! If you are looking for something uncommon and rare who will catch a few people attention take Horizon, but if you just want a safe choice or a lot of compliments this scent is absolutely not for you.I like it’s character and bases notes, I feel mint, citrus, liquorice and cedar..A gem from 90’s school.

Uhmmmm, it is hard to describe my feelings about this perfume, is such a weird smell (in a very good way), it is very unique, definetly not for everyone, the longevity (at least in my skin) is very good.In these days the hipe for fragrances are flankers or summer scents, wich it’s not bad but boring. If you want to be different just try Horizon and you will see.

This is one of my after shower, before bed scents. I use Dr. Bronner’s Lavender soap and Horizon works really well with it. It’s a beautiful and soothing fragrance to fall asleep to. However, because of it’s uniqueness it is easy to see how one might not care for it and I would not blind buy it. I would recommend testing it on your skin a few times before purchasing if possible.

Uch! right out of the bottle hated it, reminds me of cheap tequila and lime mixed with air freshener. This is most definitely NOT classy, and if I smelled it on my friend I would make him wash it off.

In my opinion it’s a huge dissapointment.. Smells like fig and fruit mixed with seawater then dries to roofing tar.. Not green and not aromatic!!
    Just not a good smell

I got this one a long time ago, well prob. 2 yrs. ago, and it was a small bottle which is 85% full, since I don’t wear it that often. IMO this is a scent that performs better in colder weather, I like that it has the vintage formulation style and that is more floral than aquatic, but very masculine, and has a decent sillage and longevity.

Horizon smells like some kind of forest gloomy pond in hot summer day with some freshly riped mandarines thrown in. It´s unique scent to me and I like it. It has got balls but it´s not obtrusive. I dare to say its longevity and projection are better than those of current version of Drakkar. Oh, and it´s pretty cheap as well. Great scent for summer imho.

I strongly recommend this one for hot summer! Aromatic green, exactly. Take a shower and enter a room with air conditioner open. Spray this over my body and i feel i’m alive again. Away from the steaming heat outside.
I got a bottle of this for a good price and i particularly want a cool aromatic one. This Horizon achieves. The bottle is also cute and well designed. Worth buying!

Smelled like a generic cool water “wanna be”. It is a cologne were compliments don’t come. I sure gave it a chance. Good/decent longevity and projection.
4/10 BUT YOU MAY LOVE IT…..????

    A truly unique fragrance.
I received several new blind buys today, and sampled them all on paper. The one I disliked the most was Horizon. But I kept going back to it – so much so that I decided to give myself four sprays before going to work. It wasn’t a safe choice for a scent I’d never worn on skin before, but boy did it pay off.
Horizon is affronting at first – a dirty mix of burnt citrus, over-dried lavender, brittle pine needles and green notes. Wait for it to settle, however, and more seductive notes emerge. It becomes soapy, soft, subtly floral and – dare I say it – even a little sensual. The dry down is classic woody green aromatic, with plenty of oak moss and leather.
This scent morphs and changes unlike any other fragrance I’ve tried before. That’s part of its charm – it keeps you going back for more. I can’t say how many times I went back for a sneaky sniff of my wrists throughout the day.
Longevity is good, projection is average. The latter is a good thing, as it is a polarising scent. A colleague told me I smelled nice today; my partner said she hated it.
Overall, a good blind buy if you like unique, bold fragrances. If you’re looking for an easy, fresh fragrance that will please anyone, move on – Cool Water this ain’t. But if you’re after an underrated classic with a great price tag attached, Horizon is well worth a sniff. A hidden gem.

I almost like this but the strong fennel note spoils it for me. If smells like spices that go into making pickles to me and that’s not something I want to smell like.

    ★★★★★
This was one of the few times I blind bought a fragrance, but at the price of 9$ it gets really tempting, plus it has been a target for me in a while and I couldn’t find a tester anywhere as it’s long gone.
I’m at a loss for words. The overall effect of this very clever Aromatic Green / Aquatic composition achieves niche quality, since the result is terrifically unique and “out there”.
It starts with a minty fresh aldehydic opening and lavender reminiscing an oceanic herbal splash, which is unbelievably refreshing and pleasing. Five minutes later, pine needles help in the overall outdoorsy and masculine character. The oceanic element takes a back seat while an underlying sweetness (probably the cyclamen or something fruity) takes over, I’m finding hard to explain since this is a very busy fragrance, and not in a negative way. For most of its lifespan, it holds a camphorous character, almost soapy, almost smoky and herbal (probably due to the lavender and moss). If you forget about the note pyramid, it evokes that oceanic feeling, and can stray from green to aquatic. Very unique, summer/spring fragrance of masculinity with a longevity of 8 hours on my skin (great for a summer fragrance) and after the intense opening, a moderate sillage, As it can be very medicinal if over applied, I discovered that spraying it in the air and walking through the “cloud” gives the most appropriate and desirable effect on my skin. The dry down is that of a classic retro fougere, but without losing its summery green/aquatic character.
Thrilled from this blind buy, definitely intending on keeping it and enjoying it in the warmer days, both day and night! It is not a “safe” smelling fragrance due to its complexity and authenticity as a cross-genre fragrance. The other aquatic fragrances of that era (Acqua Di Gio, L’ Eau D’ Issey, CK One etc.) lack character in front of this unique gem and are most certainly more safe, which is why they succeeded and they still dominate every department store to this day.

The open is spectacular and then settles into a very nice green smell. I personally love this and enjoy smelling it on me. Absolutely glad that I made the purchase. I’d recommend trying it.

Whenever I open the bottle, summer explodes and surrounds me, bringing me back in time. One of those perfumes that will stay in my memory for a very long time.

Update: This one just keeps proving it is better than I gave credit. Frankly, this is becoming one of my favorites.
I just bought 1.7 oz blind. Still, a most safe risk. Got it for $6.49 – I’ve bought and not been satisfied with a fast food meal that cost more. This one had to prove itself to me. Once I got a bit more fragrant educated I could see the great aspects here for an under-rated performer.
This has presence. It has weight and smells pretty great. In some ways it could be the best of two, warring worlds. It’s airy but not fresh. It’s thick but not pungent. I find balance here rather than identity loss.
Summary, this is a win-win if approached fairly.

I blind-bought Horizon because I thought it’d be a safe choice since I like aromatic fragrances, the note lavender etc. (and I like Drakkar Noir). All seemed good, but now I’d recommend others to test it first.
I was surprised by the extremely strong opening, it was like a mint and pine tree needles bomb. After ten minutes it dried down and became softer and I started to like it, but then it just became increasingly more soft until the sillage was so small barely I myself could smell it on me anymore. So, Horizon touched the two opposite ends of a scale in just, say, about an hour. After about four hours I told my father to smell my neck and see if he could detect anything, but it was very, very faint. Now it has been eight and a half hour since I applied it and it smells the same as it did after four hours. I don’t know if the projection and longevity suffered from the fact that I am a woman, I have not smelled this on a man yet.
The feeling I got from Horizon was nowhere near the pleasure I for instance get from wearing Davidoff Cool Water, Lanvin L’Homme or Dior Homme Cologne 2013.

It’s summer night and the tempreature is around 18 Celsius, and I’m wearing Horizon.
I just put on it from a little sample and went out to meet my friends for a drink, didn’t even know which fragrance was it.
I first thought it was XS by Paco but now I realized it’s actually this old Horizon.
I always thought about Horizon as the melancholic male perfume (sibling of Ungaro III in this regard), fragrance of the rainy days.
    Boy, it’s amazing now!
It’s fresh, I get a fresh breeze from time to time, but not icy or citrusy. Very natural, and elegant too! I’m wearing white shirt and it’s a perfect combination, I feel neat now 🙂
I surely recommend it for anyone, although it’s not like any modern male scents, maybe too discreet or subdued for those who are only into new young fresh scents, not “sparkling” freshness, it’s not “sporty”.
I’m so happy for it now! Going to wear it much much more often! 🙂
    Try it!

I am still revisiting a few of my 1990s favorites, for old times sake. I took a plunge on a newer bottle of this salty, minty, ginger-like goodness that has aquatic traits without being an aquatic.
It was pretty groundbreaking for its time: you may notice a whiff of rubber and this was years before A*Men, whether it was intentional or not. That said, I can see why people think it’s ‘meh’ without the context of what was happening in the fragrance world of 1993, already well-written about in other reviews here.
Horizon is a very intriguing fragrance that deserves a sampling. It smells even better to me now than it did back then, given the current sea of sugary amber and oud in today’s market. It is certainly distinctive and mildly powerhouse, and could actually qualify as niche today.

It’s alright. The strong note of mint is really the only thing that makes this ’93 frag stand out from many of the pre-existing, 1970’s “green” aromatic fougeres- all prominently featuring aldehyde-12. I bought a bottle of Horizon out of curiosity, but decided that I’m fine with the greens I already own. This one gets a “like” from me, but not a “love” as I don’t think it’s that original in concept.

What does Guy Laroche’s Horizon have in common with BP’s Deepwater Horizon?
They both share the name Horizon and they’re both responsible for creating major aquatic disasters.

  26. :

One of those aquatics commonly encountered in shops, hotels and restaurants around Mediterranean resorts. From pool bars in Gibraltar to quayside restaurants in Bodrum, you can’t escape them. They sort of smell homogenous/generic. This one has the added delight of smelling of anti-perspirent too.
Maybe it works better in a warm environment. Skin-type could be a factor. I’d just prefer it if I never smelt it again.
Whatever the merits of this fragrance, or the passions expressed in its favour or otherwise, all I know is I never succumbed. (It made the room smell nice).

I blind bought this, firstly I have to say it’s a weird fragrance, the opening smells to me like smoked citurs, don’t think I can describe it any other way, then the dry down begins to change my opinion, it’s going to be a nice summer fragrance. As with everything I seem to like I can smell patchouli and something aquatic, the cruel part of me wants to say bilge, but I will say sea water. I don’t get the green notes people are describing. I think it’s a better fragrance then Drakkar Noir though, I’m glad I bought it 🙂
Little update the day later. I now get the green in this fragrance. It lasts a rediculous time on the skin. This is good juice 🙂

I really love this cologne and think the ingredients our good quality. Also got the aftershave/bar soap. I dont like the soap, they somehow over pine it?. It is a very high quality cologne, although the sillage is soft moderate after a couple hours. It has a dry herbal quality with pine and florals and ocean note mostly to me. Sillage is 6 to 8 hours, it seems to help if you spray some into the fabric.

My bottle must have been off or gone bad as I got a massive amount of synthetic soap spilled into seatwater ending in a nature disaster! The whole thing is all over the place and requires a somewhat tolerant approach to even call it acceptable.

I love Horizon by Guy Laroche. For me it’s a beautiful and timeless soapy fragrance with sweet aquatic and herbal notes blended beautifully all contained in a beautiful bottle. I think of a lake in the middle of a forest when wearing Horizon. It’s perfect for that summer or spring day. However, I can also see this one working on cold days because of its crisp, clean and invigorating nature.

  34. :

The carnation-cyclamen combo with its spicy-sweetness adds an unusual, unexpected facet to this oriental-aromatic-fougere-powerhouse-become-aquatic. In structure, it is not-so-distant to its predecessor, ‘Cool Water’ (1988), but where CW’s oriental-tinged base is “sweet” (and prophetic of things to come), ‘Horizon’ is decidedly “darker”, more robust with its leather and patchouli notes underlining “chypre”. It hearkens backward, and though one may say it gives a nod to much-older compositions such as ‘Givenchy Gentleman’ (1974) and ‘Pino Sylvestre’ (1955), I find it mostly reminding me of ‘Salvador Dali PH’ (1985)- but with a marine note discreetly woven into its fabric.
This is definitely an oddity- a swan song of the 80’s powerhouse style trying to stay hip in the world of the 1990’s (where these dense structures were quickly giving way to lighter sparseness), and failing miserably- but only because of timing; if it had been released a few years earlier than it was, its charms might have been better-appreciated and sung, because I do think it is quite charming, and well-executed when judged outside of chronological context.

Horizon is a confused scent that has no idea in which direction it really wants to go. It’s a hodgepodged lost child who’s strayed away from his parents at the mall, sitting on a bench and crying while looking for a home. I’ve bought some weird blind buys in my day, but this one is the worst of them all.
What I get from this fragrance is an old abandoned house nestled deep within the middle of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. As you walk into the house you can smell the moisture from the rotting wood, and the piss that some passerby had taken in the corner a few days prior. Dank, musty and pine ridden.
The sad thing is, Guy Laroche’s house was about 10 to 13 years late on Horizon’s release date. This should have been an early 80’s release, not a 93 release. No wonder this thing got swallowed up so fast in the early 90’s aquatic pioneering craze. Some might say that Horizon is a part of that same phase, but I would argue that in order to claim that notion, one would have to make an argument that Pacco Rabanne PH deserves the right to carry that same title due to it’s wet base, but both fall flat in the end.
Folks, this damp and musty basement fragrance should not be tied to an aquatic relation…period. This scent is a true aromatic all the way. Hats off to anyone who can pull it off. Feel free to pop my ballons, but I won’t be wearing this offering any time soon unless my nose evolves greatly in the future.

Scent of summer. Very green with good longevity (about 7 hours) and moderate sillagem (only the first hour, then calms down and is right next to the skin). In my opinion is not great, but not bad. Priced well below other perfumes. He fulfills his role well, with a good fragrance. They say it was discontinued. If you find a bottle I recommend knowing. Thumbs up.

I bought my bottle of this cologne at a discount store, and got it at a good price a few years ago. I heard this is discontinued now,so that means they aren’t making it anymore. Anyone that have a slight interest in owning it should get it now while they can. If all the stores get low on their stocks, they will jack up the prices cause they won’t get more in. I like the scent. I can’t really explain it in my own words. Some people describe it being a aquatic scent. I don’t think so, but to each his own. It’s not too strong. It’s also kind of fresh.I can smell some mint notes in it. This is sort of an aquatic scent, picture being on some dark blue ocean somewhere.? If anyone can’t find a tester in any store and want to try it, I’m willing to send a sample in a clear vial or atomizer for free. Please let me know.?

Moderately grapefruity, soapy herbal thing. Nice I suppose, but it’s just slightly too close to standard-issue shampoo for me to really respect it. Consider Balle de Match instead…slightly less shampooey grapefruit. Still, I respect it as a sort of proto-aquatic.

How beautiful this fragrance is really nice good before, because through its fragrance tells moods, sea foam, gusts of cool wind or dew of the moor.
    Its freshness is intact until the end with hints of citrus and herbs wrapped in the warmth of cedar and dark velvet musk and amber, it has a hint of rust and metal but it’s very well made and this scent draws a great advantage radiating a strong and persistent freshness;
    despite past 20 years remains
a good fragrance, despite being the younger brother of Drakkar has carved out a space all its own, and its name is really a success.
The fantastic ice blue glass bottle.
    Deserves more of a chance

I found Horizon today on the final clearance table at a discount store. Two drops on my wrists and I picked out the pine tree needle note, reminiscent of the mini forest of 30 pine trees crowded into our northern Florida yard one mile from the Atlantic Ocean and its chilly winter breezes. My nose quickly detected the leather note and the oakmoss zing, not once stopping to distinguish any floral notes except for a touch of pepper and mint.
I will enjoy having my husband wear this EDT from the midnight blue bottle with textured glass pattern of mysterious design. The empty bottle will become a soothing “worry stone” for me, and a weight for my husband’s papers.

”What would an ocean be without a monster lurking in the dark? It would be like sleep without dreams.”
An absolute and wonderful Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Horizon by Guy Laroche is a captivating soapy-floral, fresh-spicy and masculine potion. It opens up with bitter green notes which enfold into a leather-herbal musk with lingering spices to entice your senses.
It’s both green and aquatic with an elusive touch. A monster with infinite power. Old school yet modern. Dark but fresh.
When I wear Horizon, I think of the ocean. I think of the amazon and thunderstorms.
This is one of my favorite scents to wear during the Summer next to Kenzo Pour Homme which share similar characteristcs.
It also works well during rainy hot Summer days.
The silage is wonderful where as longevity is beast. I get 10+ hours.

Unimaginably powerful for what it is.
It’s like they took Cool Water, then dialed the volume up to 11.
I like Cool Water and Drakkar, but this stuff is obscene and crass. Sharp, bitter, it stings the senses. The florals, the lavender, all sharp as needles. There is a bit of minty freshness and a cool vibe in there which I do like.
    Mind-boggling in strength.

This is very strong. Fall/winter, 2 sprays tops.
One thing I noticed is that this shouldn’t be an everyday scent. I really loved it the first two days, but during day 3 and 4, it started getting sickening. I couldn’t even smell it for an entire month without getting disgusted. Months later, I put it back on, and I like it.

Seriously underrated, this fragrance is an all-rounder! its sexy, sophisticated, fresh, deep, masculine, and very energizing.
there is a bit of an old school touch to this one, which i think is a good thing 🙂
do give it a try and not on paper or fabric but on your skin. It dances out completely differently.
After half an hour it is beginning to smell very much like CD eau Sauvage. cant comment on the longevity right now but this fragrance has changed over 30 mins – still good 🙂
post shower presence on my skin or is it my imagination??? Wow…. though have to admit the opening blast which is amazing does not sustain through to the dry down. BUT still its very pleasant and i am not even a tad bit angry at my friend for gifting it to me 🙂

I bought this for my husband after discovering it hiding on a back shelf at Dollar Tree. This fragrance came out the year we graduated from high school, and I remember those sillage-monster colognes from those days quite vividly.
As a woman my tastes in perfumes are forward in thought, and I don’t care for the heavy perfumes from that time that announce you are home to the neighborhood. But that’s for me… I don’t like men who smell like they’ve bathed in cologne, but a scent of man is appreciated and noted.
A lot of the recent men’s colognes seem to really border on unisex, and even though I’m young in spirit, I want my husband to smell like a MAN. (and he prefers something that clearly confers his masculinity too). I’ve been a loss at a new cologne to buy him, and them this one calls me FROM A DOLLAR STORE, and ohmygod it was like the heavens opened up and gave me the perfect smell.
This cologne starts off sweet, but ultimately dries down into this amazing whirlwind of scents, a mix of woodsy and aquatic, this incredibly complex scent that screams MAN and if he overdoes it, you will run far, far away. But a small dab, and it’s GAME ON, husband. He can wear this every day and night, and it will have me following him close behind. This cologne is a masterpiece of complexity, and I’m So glad I found it. I would’ve glad paid $80 for a bottle of this elixir.

I was expecting something more compelling from this as there are so many warnings to not buy blind.
The top notes are extremely delicious; fresh sweet mint like a mojito with slices of citrus. Blam! It turns into dry acrid lavender, so much so I thought it was that off smell when perfume gets too much sun or heat. No, just lavender and some other dry herbs and spices. Suddenly this passes too and the base reveals a fairly middle of the row aromatic fougere dry down with hints of calone.
I was also surprised at how little lasting power and sillage this presents on me. In my books this is not a powerhouse, more an experiment in combining two opposing olfactory groups combining to create something not as good as either.

A very good scent for a very good price. Fresh and spicy throughout, I feel this is suitable for almost any occasion. It is fresh and “sporty” enough to wear at work but complex enough to wear on a night out.
Decent longevity and projection, this is something that I feel punches way above its price range. I can’t smell half of the notes in the pyramid there, mostly comes across as aquatic and spicy, quite unlike any other scent I have come across.
Discontinued apparently, but still readily available

I did not have high expectations for this, but I was very pleasantly surprised. This has old school charm the type Aramis New West has, except this may be slightly “cleaner”. It is loaded with oakmoss, and has some wonderful, but not overpowering green notes. Sometimes green can be bitter and tiresome, but this is actually well balanced, and even brags a bit of leather, and it’s actually a nice leather note. For the money, you really can’t go wrong with this. I would wear this over many perfumes that cost 10 times this amount. A nice refreshing scent, without being too minty or piney or citrussy. Really worth a try for those that aren’t scared of oakmoss and “manly” type aromas. Really surprsing! (And that’s a good thing)

A pungent, heavy, mature scent which has good projection and longevity..
    I applied 6 heavy sprays
0 – 3 hours – 1.25 foot projection. Starts of as a mature, dirty earth, heavy, serious frag with a twist of something more light hearted and green which attempts to balance it out and it nearly gets there
However after 30 mins the light hearted twist goes and whats left, too me, is a foul musky scent and it is too serious. This is just too spicy and I am suprised to see this listed as “fresh spicy”
    3 hours – 4 hours – 7 inch projetion, same as above
4-7 hours – 3 inch projection. Significant smokiness kicks in and this comes as relief from the harshness and bitterness. It’s the stuff now of hard masculinity; perhaps someone who has not appreciated my earlier comments..
7 – 9 hours. Close to skin, pretty much just smokiness
This is too mature and heavy a frag for my personal taste.
Affordable and may appeal to those who like strong, highly spicy frags, with that 80’s vibe

It has been years since I’ve worn this, and I can still remember it. Like a lot of scents from this time the vendor apparently wanted you to get your money’s worth! It was a scent that threw the door open and announced your arrival. I used to keep it in my travel kit. That could be why the people seated around me on the plane opened up the airvents? 😉 It is spicy and floral and bold.

Tried this because it was very cheap with good reviews. It starts off very strong, soapy and floral but fresh. It is heavily floral/herbal throughout but stays incredibly masculine with some sour, green and spicy notes.
Progresses nicely, complex and interesting and stays strong. There is a sour note I love that fades but never disappears. Late on it has leathery, musky notes but still retains the floral ones and it smells beautiful.
It seems to me that there are a lot of opposites in this: strong/subtle, fresh/heavy, cool/warm, floral/masculine, sweet/sour – and it seems very well balanced.
This is a heavy hitter – you can practically see the sillage trails. Projects strongly for mo
