“Häxan is an ode to the ancient practices of sorcery, magic, alchemy and witchcraft. It is inspiredby Benjamin Christensen’s 1922 seminal film on this subject. The perfume uses over 100 ingredients that are traditionally represented in potions and elixirs associated with these practices. Created as a bespoke perfume for Rajesh Balkrishnan by Prin Lomros, Häxan is a dark witchy fougere style perfume which incorporates dark woody and aromatic elements on a mossy bed representative of the ambience of the smells of places where dark occult ceremonies were conducted. The perfume uses three blends of natural lavender oil surrounded by woody resinous birch, cedar, fir, guaiac, cypriol, sandalwood, wormwood, styrax and pine needle. The perfume includes spicy and herbal notes of saffron, thyme, rosemary, black pepper, nutmeg, caraway, cinnamon, violet leaf, tobacco, mushroom, basil, marjoram, and vetiver. Also present are faint animalic notes of civet, leather, musk, castoreum, beeswax, seaweed and hyrax that finally lead to a mossy powdery bed of moss, patchouli, labdanum, jasmine, olibanum, opoponax, chamomile, and galbanum. The perfume exudes an air of aromatic mystery and is a shape shifting marvel that ebbs and flows in alternate hues of dark and light. In spite of its dense and dark notes, this is a surprisingly wearable and light concoction that takes you on a ride into the dark unknown of magic and ancient practices of the surreal considered heretic and profane.” – a note from the brand.

A densely complex green herbal beauty that somehow manages to stay luminous and not muddy. It opens with the forest floor – rich pine, cedar and fir resins sitting on a bed of shrooms and vetiver which give it depth and an almost savoriness. As it dries down it resembles to some degree the best of masculine green fougeres from the 70’s. Certainly as complex and well blended as Azzaro Homme and Paco Rabanne, but retaining an urbane polished restraint. Gorgeous.
To me if you love and appreciate Biehl Parfumkunstwerke GS03 by Geza Schoen, you will love this. Prissana Haxan is GS03 energized by a lightning flash in the middle of the forest – it’s alive and vibrant.

I was so delighted to try this fragrance. Haxan truly lives up to its name. It is from the earth, with an opening of fiery lavender, to a dry down of deep, precious woods and resins. This will take you somewhere, to a sorcerers dungeon, or a witch coven in the woods. I absolutely enjoyed it, and if you enjoy resinous, woody, and herbacious scents, you will too. Definitely not a style you’ll find everywhere.
