Gucci pour Homme (2003) Gucci for men of Gucci

Share:

Description

Gucci pour Homme follows in the footsteps of Gucci eau de parfum for women. It’s the essence of Gucci man, ment for a gentleman that’s mature and self-confident, well-dressed in refined, expensive tailored suit (a tie is a must, of course). The composition relies on the warm notes of spices, woods and amber. Top notes are Artemisia, basil, bergamot, lavender, lemon, petitgrain, ginger and papyrus wood. Its heart is composed of the notes of geranium, cedar, jasmine, patchouli, pink pepper, pimento and sandalwood. The base is warm thanks to amber, incense, musk, Tonka bean, vanilla, vetiver and sage. Its square bottle is heavy with an elegant square cap. The color of the juice promises a warm and spicy experience. It was created by Michel Almairac in 2003.

A brilliant, beautifully constructed fragrance. Tragic that it was discontinued. Unfortunately, the younger generations just can’t appreciate anything other than the money grab fragrances. And sadly, they control the current fragrance market.

    Incredible perfume!
It is true that Bentley For Men Absolute is closest to him, but still Gucci pour homme is superior.

OldChef It is very good perfume or was ? I wouldn’t go crazy and pay those silly prices on eBay. If you can get this at decent price than go for it ! otherwise Bentley Absolute is the best option right now. Many people have sentimental feelings about this perfume including me, not to mention that beautiful bottle design, whole campaign and vibes it gives are just amazing. This perfume is a legend, it should be in Hall of Fame Gucci Perfume Collection. The most annoying thing is that Gucci doesn’t care about Tom Ford era, they never did.

Hmm… that might be a good idea with Coty 🙂 but do they really care ? I mean there would have to be massive numbers of emails about how many people want this perfume back and the other thing is the formula and to whom it belongs ?

  5. :

It’s Coty that contracts the fragrances and beauty, not Gucci, so if everyone were to email Coty, we might be able to get somewhere.

I used to keep this bottle hidden somewhere in my room, as if it was liquid gold, only to discover that my brother had used almost all of it in less than 3 weeks
Always had a huge collection of really heavy Indian incense sticks and this perfume was something that came very close to the smell of the wooden box that i keep the sticks, divine smell!
Maybe if we start sending emails to Gucci?

Sex in a bottle. Not that that’s what fragrances are for (or are they?) but if you have the personality to carry this off then you are definitely going to get laid.
I have a 11 year old bottle which is down to it’s last 10ml and I spray this maybe 3 or 4 times a year to make it last. I still can’t figure why this was discontinued.
This is my all time number 1 followed closely by Gucci Oud Intense. Absolutely gorgeous scent. Kids should avoid this. It is meant for men with balls. And massive bank accounts.
For those looking for clones, look up Bentley Absolute Intense. It comes mighty close to smelling like this beauty.

I made the mistake of buying this during a hot day in June when I couldn’t appreciate this. I was very proud of owner this fragrance once winter came along. Woody, leathery, smokey, peppery…. all these dark ingredients and they aren’t offensive at all. It’s complimented with some light and sweet tones. Always my go-to at Christmas time.

Did you ever open up the pencil sharpener in class, one of those old metal ones that they bolted to the walls, and smelled all of the pencil shavings inside just out of curiosity? Did you like it? If you said yes to both these questions then you are in luck.
Pencil shavings. Nice pencil shavings, expensive pencil shavings even, but definitely that old “school” scent that will take you back to the time of homework, hormones and hallways. That’s what I get from the opening and the mids of this, the dry down is a little different but similar. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, then find yourself a bottle, skip a meal or two or maybe a month’s worth and buy it.
My roommate can’t get enough of it, will gladly rob you of your bottle and cried when he read Some Stubble’s review.

Got a bottle in a small discount shop in an underground mall for $80 100ml.
The woman gave me a discount because it was in a tester box.
She had no idea what she was selling. I actually felt odd. She did everything as if she was just watching the shop. Looked at an old worn price tag and took 20% off for the box.
Walking to the train I half expected someone running up to me apologetically explaining a mistake had been made.
Love this stuff. The rationing sucks a bit. I used to spray freely. Now each spray is calculated. Like that Seinfeld episode where Elaine has to decide who is sponge worthy.
    I’ll probably croak with a 2/3 full bottle 🙂

Gucci Pour Homme I is a vintage masculine aromatic. There are two versions of the formula. One is very dark brown with an extremely potent incense note. And the other is a golden light brown, with the incense note strongly blended down into a sweet-spicy complex.
I personally favor the dark brown stuff for the vintage flare that it brings. The potency of the incense note is just otherworldly, and projects with the most amazing clarity and realism to it. It provides this vintage experience that’s so life-like, it’s amazing!
The incense takes you straight back to the 1920’s…where you can literally smell the aged wood and atmosphere of the manor; you can see the people walking along the cobblestone streets; and everything around you optically appears in a monochrome vintage filter.
I personally enjoy every minute of it. I wore it on a trip downtown while walking around in Tower City, and it really emulates the scene of the old world architecture, and brings those vintage roots to life.
The golden brown stuff is a little more modern styled, but I’d say the vintage essence is still there; and it’s a little special tastes, so possibly still not for everyone. It’s just in the intended style. Gucci Pour Homme I is moreso a fragrance for those that are old at heart—and those with ties to the past.

A modern classic that never, ever should have been pulled from the market. Vanilla, sweaty musk and incense in perfect, luxurious equilibrium. Very, very sexy and I was glad to have it for a few good years. Why oh why does Gucci go to the trouble of creating masterpieces like Pour Homme, Envy Men and Rush Men only to discontinue them at the height of their popularity? Everything in the men’s line that has followed has been 2nd-rate, sorry.
At least we still have Montale‘s Greyland as a solid substitute, though the Bourbon vanilla isn’t as pronounced as it was with Pour Homme.

I have 3x 50ml of this vintage. For me, it does not work. I have to admit I thought of pencil shavings as well. But that is me, not you. If you are interested in buying one, please contact me PM. If not, I’ll keep them and perhaps when I am turning 50 and really start to turn nostalgic, I will wear them all day.
But kidding aside, this one is a real quality scent, long projection and after a while still very subtitle on the background as well. If you are into woody scents, this one is one of the better ones I’ve ever smelled!
But me, I am not into woody scents (yet), so this one is not for me.

  15. :

    4 out of 5

Excellent fragrance for a gentlemen. Classy, masculine, rugged, warm, and versatile enough to wear on most occasions whether in a business suit, or a casual Saturday in jeans and leather jacket. Better in colder months (fall and winter).
It’s one of my wife’s favorites on me and every Winter she asks when I’ll be wearing it. My bottle is getting low (less than 1oz) so I have to wear it very sparingly. However, I must say Bentley Intense Absolute is nearly identical so I picked up a bottle so I can use the Gucci as little as possible. Unfortunately, neither the Gucci or the Bentley projects much, and sadly the longevity is only average at best for both of them. After all, they really are that close. Honestly, I can’t tell the difference nor can the wife and friends.
GPH is probably the most masculine incense-based fragrance in my collection, along with Interlude of course. As much as I love it, I would not want to smell it on my wife because it’s too masculine and I prefer her to smell like a lady, and which she prefers anyway thank God! I know the ladies that like ti wear men’s colognes will down vote me for that comment, but I could care less. I’m a traditional kind of guy. And Gucci fits my personality perfectly. Probably the only fragrance that fits my personality better is Fahrenheit.
All in all, a true classic and one of the best compositions ever created. Top 10 all time IMO.

I recently found three 50ml bottles of this beauty at my local fragrance shop for approximately $42 each. I had never gotten my nose on this, so I was a bit hesitant to purchase, as the tester in-store had clearly gone bad (liquid had turned green!). I pulled the trigger nonetheless and bought two bottles initially, and what can I say, it’s an absolute masterpiece! I rushed back the following day and purchased the remaining bottle.
The fragrance starts off with a heavy dose of spice and wood and settles down to a beautiful and rich blend of the two as it dries down. Makes you feel empowered in no small measure. On first sniff, my better half thought it smelled too strong, but later got used to it and liked it. Although she did say that the woody notes gave off a wet wood vibe which was slightly off putting in her opinion.
I for one love this, and given that it has been discontinued, I will treasure it even more. It’s definitely a fragrance more suited to more mature men and is perfect for formal occasions.
    Longevity: 6+ Hours
Projection & Silage : Scent cloud with at least 2 feet of projection for 3 to 4 hours prior to becoming a skin scent.

After all these years it is still one of my favorites.
    So distinguished and elegant.
Too bad it is discontinued, glad I have a stash of 5 new 100ml bottles …

  18. :

This fragrance fared very badly in Australia as it’s a very smoky scent and it was released shortly after some major bushfires here.
That said I love it so much that I bought it for myself, even though it’s a very masculine scent and I’m a woman. It’s smoky yet crisp, and on my skin it dries down to something warm and soft. I often layer it with a sharper, sweeter perfume like Ralph Lauren Romance or Miss Dior Cherie.
It makes me think of cigars, wood paneled libraries, leather and whisky.

  19. :

    5 out of 5

It’s a shame this is discontinued because it is a gorgeous composition. An old-book-page sweet opening driven by papyrus, the middle dominated by pepper and a dry-down of amber/leather. While it’s true this doesn’t have radiant performance, it’s not bad either. On my skin it provides decent projection for upto 3-4 hours and becomes a soft – yet conspicuously present – skin scent for the next 4-5 hours.

  20. :

    4 out of 5

still do t undrestand the fuss around this anemic fragrance. it lasts 2 hours on my skin and, as I can read,I am not the only one. Sillage is inexistent and longevity for few hours ONLY as a skin scent. I had many bottles since 2007 until now, no exception. Try CDG Men, way better, similar 95% and with better longevity and sillage.

Man, funny how tastes are chancing, when I tried this scent first time, 12 years ago I thought is the worst fragrance ever created.
Now I think is one of the best. Too bad is discontinued, luckily Bentley Absolute is just as good if not better. My favorite perfume at the moment, I can’t get enough of it.

Purchased this one summer of 2004 for a lads holiday to Kavos in Gatwick duty free (how classy) and in my mind it ‘knocked em bandy’….!
Wasn’t really into frags that much back then but remember this being warm spicy sweet woodsy with tang and floral aspects going on.
I kept the cold heavy glass bottle only about 1/8 used for years and never used it then went off frags and then chucked it away! What an idiot!
Happy memories and now that I am more interested in frags am gutted that this cannot be obtained any more (except risky Ebay over priced half used bottles) so that I can see if it still envokes the same emotions and actually smells as good as I remember.
It would be great to be transported back to my carefree youth in the days when I wore this but also probably risky as would it still smell the same now anyway if it had carried on being produced?? (with the new rules on ingredients and volumes in frags etc….). Maybe it is best left to most people’s memories or those lucky ones that retain some of the original.
Case in point being Polo Sport which was one of my other first frag loves – boy what a synthetic mess of a cheap frag this is now but what I remember was totally different and to be honest I don’t think I’ve got it wrong as I think smells stay with us imprinted on the brain. Maybe GPH just CAN’T be recreated and maybe they have tried hence it’ll be no more…..great legend though and if anyone has any of the original going spare I’d happily take it off heir hands!

Gucci Pour Homme is big, bold, breathtaking. It commands respect in our world of pilgrims, following our nose. Tom Ford is the name associated with this authority of a fragrance but I say hats off to Michel Almairac, the actual perfumer. Amazing job!
Wear it or don’t, but this is a milestone, not to be missed any collection. It’s almost too good (and now also too rare) to be worn.
It left big footprints. Too big for Gucci to fill in the past years. Guilty Absolute may be the first attempt to honor these days of glory.

This is just like pencil shavings as a kid in the 80s one of the punishments was to sharpen all the pencils. I cant quite believe the hype behind this. I prefer the original Gucci Pour Homme, Leather, suwed, and citrus blast. I placed this on one are and YSL Rive Guache. OMG Rive Gauche just out classes and out ranks this alhotugh in the dydown they are very similar. Rive Gauche and GPH have very poor projection.

I just took out one of my three used bottles from when it was still around…and I’m taken back to why this became one of THE most luxurious scents I’ve owned, well, THE MOST actually. This is the epitome of what Gucci “used” to stand for during mister Ford’s tenure. Even if someone was “clueless”- no pun intended, of what luxury and refinement in a scent represent, just one sniff of this and the lights would go on! I just spritzed one small amount in the fold of my arm about three hours ago and I’m still swooning, literally! The amber and pepper is amazing….I’m surprised of the silage this fragrance still executes….people, this is MAGICAL. Italian luxury Should be smelling like this…warm, dense yet airy, deep, refined and expensive! How sad this stuff is no longer in production, at least not at retail outlets…This scent truly represents the vision Tom Ford was channeling for Gucci in all it’s splendor and glory hands down, period. When you compare this and Tom Ford’s current fragrance offerings, it’s undeniable they share the same DNA…it’s unapologetically conspicuous in it’s composition…damn! I cannot wear this and not feel like a grown up…when you smell this you’d know it’s high end!

Update: Guys from NYC just go at GUCCI’s HQ and tell the women/men from there to talk to Marco and tell him that we truly need their comeback in 2017! I’m full of prices up to €400! I want them back at €60 per 100ml! Envy, GPH, Rush…

This was my signature scent back in 2003 til 2010 when I could get it easily as a tester without cap for no more than £40.00 for a 100ml. I have 5ml left of a 100ml and one full bottle 100ml which I’m afraid to touch as it will be gone. I have seen it pop up on ebay for silly prices £115-299 but as much as I love it I would not pay that. All good things come to an end (or get reformulated which is the same thing)
Michel Almairac is a wonderful nose and has made a similar fragrance with his bently absolute which can be bought for a lot less.

Probably the best scent from this house. Niche quality, deep, rich, well-rounded scent, with massive bottle.
There are few scents that are similar to this one, but they are just similar, Gucci PH1 is for class better.

The mighty Pour Homme I. The legend. If Rive Gauche started the legend of Tom Ford, then this one solidified it.
Upon it’s release, nothing at all smelt like it. It was totally out there. A total throwback.
However, despite most throwback scents, GPH I is still valid in 2016. It smells mature, but not outdated. Grown up, but not old.
The opening is a woody affair. For all it’s listed notes, I mainly get a dusty papyrus accord with ginger and hints of pepper.
As we reach the middle, the pepper is amped up. It becomes very spicy. An accord of earthy patchouli is here as well. This is the stage where GPH becomes very grown up and mature. It’s very in your face at this staged, almost unrefined.
A woodsy combo of sandalwood and cedar ends the accord. It’s a peculiar type of woodiness. You have the creaminess of sandalwood, with a slight briskness of cedar. It’s impeccably crafted, and is a real headturner. Combined with the pepper and patchouli, it’s possibly devastating.
After the quite raw middle stage, the base rounds it all out. Smoky incense, earthy vetiver and smooth vanilla are all here. In combination, they give this scent a distinct smoothness that sets it apart from the many vintage scents it borrows from. Where they are raw and unpolished, Gucci is a refined best of, a greatest hits collection of the best 70s and 80s scents in one bottle.
This a very smoky fragrance. However where CdG’s 2 Man is artistic and unrefined, GPH I remains tamed and contemporary. It isn’t as artsy nor raw as 2 Man, and this is what makes it timeless.
2 Man, it’s closest contemporary, comes across as nice but weird. The incense is amped up and gives it a very distinct edge. Here the incense is used to fill out the composition. If 2 Man is a catholic church, GPH I is the refined gentleman attending mass.
GPH I isn’t perfect at all, but GPH I and GPH II are by far the best things Gucci ever gave us.
Longevity is excellent 12+ hours. Unlike most scents with great longevity, GPH I remains restrained, always there but never in your face.
    Rating: 10/10

I will add a full review of this one soon. But, WOW, what a fantastic smell. I really see no reason for a company to discontinue such a gem, such a well crafted perfume and, above all that, such an atemporal fragrance. Unbelievably unique, smoky, woody and incensed. Crazy stuff… got 2 bottles of it this week, and I will use them very carefully.

GPH1 is overhyped a lot, and not that extrodinary as some guys mentioned. Maybe there is a theorem that a just good frag would get hyped after the discontinuity.
If you like this one, I think you would definately love Bentley for Men Absolute that composed by the same nose of GPH1. Bentley Absolute projects better and lasts longer, and with more depth and better quality.Rating: 8.5/10, and falls below 5.0 if consider the current price.

I’m a big fan of Gucci Envy so I thought I’d try this out, and got an atomiser. I was quite surprised by the smell.. Not as in your face as Envy I don’t think.. but also SO familiar. This smells incredibly like something I’ve worn before, but I can’t put my finger on what it is. I’m thinking it’s perhaps a more recent Tom Ford fragrance.
Either way, it’s not a bad smell, but certainly not worth the big prices that are flying around. Gucci Envy certainly is though!!

Does price have a significant influence on perceived value? It can… sometimes unwarranted.
It’s hard to believe now, but when Gucci Pour Homme was discontinued, you could find bottles of it for discount prices… as cheaply as $60 USD for a 100ml bottle! Today, it’s not uncommon for a NIB 100ml bottle to be snapped up for $235 USD. What happened?
Rarity. GPH is not “super” rare, as you can see from the available inventory in that great resale channel known as eBay. But the quantity is low enough and resale price history high enough that most sellers drop them into an auction and watch in amazement as the price skyrockets.
Colin Maillard said this is not a masterpiece. I would have to disagree. GPH is easy to “miss”… meaning, the impression of the top notes is rather ordinary. Nice, but no Mozart of fragrances. What I’ve found is that you have to be patient. And into the dry down, you can eventually realize just how wonderful this fragrance truly is. To say “pencil shavings” is to be guilty of quick presumption. It is not a distillation of pencil shavings. It is so much more than that.
Personally, I’d say GPH is well worth about $150 USD for 100ml, and not much more. Clearly people are paying more than that, as they fervently want to own something scarce. To catch a fleeting whiff in the air as though James Dean was flying by in his vintage Porsche speedster into history.
    Fragrance: 9/10; Market Value: 6/10.

This perfume is extraordinary beautiful. I have never smelled a perfume with this magnificent scent. The main accords are Incense and Cedar. I can smell Pepper and Sandalwood mixed with Leather too. The longevity is awesome and it has got a good projection. It is a great perfume for Winter and Fall.

smells good but like cedar soda if that makes sense. I prefer something like Wonderwood or Encre Noir to this actually (especially factoring in the asking price on ebay). I think Gucci Envy is a much more interesting frag compared to this if you’re going to pay that hefty ebay price. Not bad just not worth the hype. Love the bottle design tho.

I have mixed feeling about this perfume (similar like a have with La Nuit de l`Homme Yves Saint Laurent). It is refined perfume there is no doubt but I do not see myself wearing it.
I have affinity to woody-smoke-spice perfumes and that is what I feel dominantly here (cedar, ginger and smoky sense) also some other notes but is seems too much mixed.
Maybe because it reminder me of some women perfumes I have some repulsive feelings.
Longevity (8 h) and sillage here have good combination except that I have sense that I suffocate from the smell (but that is just me).
Maybe I will have something similar in 10 years but now…
    Scent 5/10
    Longevity 8/10
    Projection 8/10

Today i found an old sample and a deo stick
of this beautiful fragrance in my drawer, the
deo stick was not usable due to the fact it was
just the powder left of it, but i lubricated it
on to my hand and man do i miss this one bad, it
brought back many memories, i guess i never thought
that Gucci would ever discontinued such a rare gem,
or i would have stacked up 20 bottles in my drawer
    for sure.

it s like, you know, thousands of likes on FB after some celeb dies… Yes, it was beautiful but not gorgeous, good but not a genius, special but not unique. I still have it, I had many bottles in more than 10 years but I will not die without it, that s for sure. As much as I am absolutely sure that it will never be in production again, never ever. Like everything and every thing, came to an end. Sooner or later. So, goodbye nice “man” and thank you for the beautiful moments you gave me in time.

We can all hope that this beauty is brought back into production some day. I used up my last drops a few months ago. One of the nicest cedar and smoke perfumes for men ever made. A masterpiece of delicacy but incredibly executed. It was a wonderful thing, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

So back in 2003 I was in middle school (in Asia) with no father figure, and I didn’t get into fragrances till college.. It was the PERFECT setup to miss such masterpiece! Just to think there was a point in time where commercial fragrance THIS GOOD were being mass produced by a major designer house bedazzles me! (and that goes for the 90s as well)
Now I’m an avid fragrance reader & sampler; having tried quite a few things and some essential oils, I realized most commercial fragrances nowadays are not real–the “notes” are pretty much just an idea, so I’ve grown to quickly dismiss them (with some exceptions) and move on to niche or “private collections.”
With that said, this one really beats many, more so than other overhyped vintage fragrances, and although it’s never mentioned, it actually reminds me of Serge Lutens’ Chene much more than Bentley and CdG.

12 year old me begged my mother to buy this for me when we were in Duty Free going into the US. I remember my mother smelling it and saying “phuff…are you sure?”… I have no regrets. I still love this scent!

Description: Imagine opening a new case of pencils and the pungent, spicy scent of sharpened wood takes you back to your early childhood when school was still an adventure.
Recommendation: Despite the conjured-up childhood memories a very serious scent, suitable for formal occasions in the golden days of fall.
    Creativity*: 4.5 out of 5
    Blend**: 4.5
    Distinctiveness***: 4.5
    Performance: 3.25

Personal appreciation: 4.5 out of 5
Final notes: Why this masterpiece was discontinued is beyond comprehension. However, check out Bentley for Men Absolute by the same perfumer. A worthy successor indeed.
    —–
*Creativity: A frag gets a perfect score if it was the first of its kind on the market and if this kind was a game changer; **Blend: A perfect blend will trigger your imagination, take you places, but won’t try to be the exact copy of something that exists in the world (in other words, single-themed gourmands get low scores); ***Distinctiveness: If everybody is wearing it and/or there are uncounted olfactory twins on the market: low score; ****Allure: Assessment based on verbal and non-verbal reactions from my surroundings.

I think the notes on this are right on target!. As with so many reviews, I think this is a perfectly blended scent and no individual note overwhelms. I am not sure smoke or incense belongs in the #1 spot because this will not remind you of church or the smoke of lets say Sahara Noir or L’ Air du Desert Marocain, but there is certainly incense in there. Manly. Dark. Cedar, leather and a slight bit of pepper. Sandalwood to give it a spicy smoke.
I blind bought this at $100.00 for 1.7oz because I simply had to experience it myself and while I like it a great deal I would not say it was worth what I paid. Close to the skin and so many have noted. Still detectable 6 hours later but its on its way out. If you stumble upon it for a great deal then I say “go for it” but otherwise I would test out other comparable scents that you can know for sure you will love.

Gucci Pour Homme. This fragrance is so adult and sexy, I can totally understand why it was discontinued. No one else seems to have commented on that here. I bought this as a mini just out of curiosity–and a love of woody, smoky fragrances–but I ran to Ebay immediately afterwards to pay a premium price for a 3oz flacon. Sexiest manufactured thing I’ve put my nose to since Bulgari Black.

It’s Gucci signature, it’s a masterpiece that never repeated. Woody Oudh with beautiful spices. Very masculine. It’s for night on lovely spring or winter seasons. The bad news it’s no more available ..

Nice, but nobody will know you are wearing this because projection is very poor. No amount of sprays will resolve the projection issue. Strangely, longevity is excellent.
Btw, the Bentley is the best imitator by far. It is the same perfumer after all, and I get the impression he set out to recreate the Gucci, perhaps note for note.

Gucci, please get this gem back into production, or your karma will keep going down!

    This will never get “replaced”
It’s like Michael Jordan, it’s over..it was one of the greatest of all times
It’s better this way, makes me appreciate my full bottle every time I see it
Just wish the price gouging wasn’t so ridi
