This is a beautiful, rich, warm fragrance. I have owned it for a couple of years – but given the size of my wardrobe, haven’t worn it for quite a while. It’s a cool weather scent, for certain.
I sprayed it a few times this afternoon, because I’d moved a few bottles of perfume around and the distinctive bottle caught my eye.
Initially, Grain de Soleil packs quite a powerful punch, but the sillage becomes moderate, in my opinion, within a short time. I envy those on whom it lasts a long time, as – on me – it lasts about 4.5 hours or so (but my skin absorbs most perfume very quickly).
I was wondering which perfume GdS brought to mind and had been idly thinking about it for the last few hours, when it finally came to me.
It’s a far more restrained and polite Alien Essence Absolu. I’ve spritzed a little AEA on the back of my left hand and refreshed the GdS to compare them side by side.
Now I am not suggesting that Grain de Soleil is a clone (it would be the other way round, as it was launched over ten years earlier) or that it could even be mistaken for AEA – but there is definitely a similarity. They have incense, amber, vanilla and jasmine in common; both also have a slightly powdery quality which is probably coming from orris root (in AEA) and iris (in GdS). They also have a woody substance to them (cashmere wood in AEA) and sandalwood in the case of GdS.
Grain de Soleil is a very classy perfume and certainly smells far more expensive than it is.
ETA. My comments about Alien Essence Absolu are absolutely not intended as negative; I love it (and am now wearing it instead).

ok, here it goes …I like big dirty vanillas and I cannot lie 🙂 (winks at Shalimar)
and this one here feels like cuddly million cushions and a blanket in winter. and something naughty happening under that blanket 😉

I am loving this. Good quality balsamics and powdery sweetness. Still testing, but I feel the longevity isn’t as amazing as it could be, and I only say this because I have Alien essence on the other arm and it’s so much more intense.

I have many perfumes (over 100), and this my absolute favorite. The sillage is incredible and people always ask me what I am wearing. Powdery and sweet. It is a feel good perfume!

This is one of three Fragonard fragrances I enjoyed during a Paris Fashion Week trip in which I walked into the Fragonard Museum next to the Garnier Opera. They sell these fragrances: Billet Doux Caress Soleil and Grain de Soleil. Their most successful best seller is Soleil which is absolutely beautiful, a cheery sunny floral evocative of the South of France in summer under the provincial sun. But Grain de Soleil, it’s flanker, is a much warmer winter edition.
This is a charming spicy smoky amber based fragrance sure to delight you like a cozy fireplace with holiday pumpkin spice lattes and other desserts. Very festive and inviting. This is going to be my Christmas party fragrance along with Coco Eau de Parfum (vintage). It’s a good cologne; with the only downside being it’s lack of top middle and base note structure which means it’s linear and very soft and not terribly long lasting.
It opens with flower notes blended together beautifully. Fragonard has a good selection of florals like Caress and Billet Doux but this is a much more simplified floral scent with powdery iris and heliotrope rose jasmine and orange blossom. A touch of green herbaceous patchouli is there as well but it’s not a big patchouli and the aromatic side of the scent is more about the incense and the Oriental style notes of amber sandalwood plus the spices. This is more spicy than floral. Cinnamon scents waft out through the perfume with a spicy unisex air delicious and exotic, warm, boozy. This is a great cinnamon scent and one of the underrated ones. The floral notes that most stand out to me are the rose and heliotrope.
As it dries it turns into a gorgeous warm amber and sandalwood combo. The scent lasts (on me anyways) no more than 3-4 hours sometimes 5 which is ok but I would prefer it was more full bodied and rich. I layer it with other scents that match up with cinnamon and vanilla (like Coco Eau de Parfum or Jovan Secret Amber) because this needs a boost. This is a lovely fragrance and it’s easy to find either online at their company website but you’d have to get it imported from France and or if you visit their Museum shop in Paris. An enchanting fragrance.
    Merry Christmas

This is a soft spicy, powdery and vanillic scent. I adore how warm,cosy,lady-like sweet and soft like a cashmere blanket this scent is. I cannot detect the florals at all. Vanilla plays the main role in here. Not childish but grown-up kind of sweet vanilla. It’s also very powdery because of iris and heliotrope. Not musky like detergent but airy and fluffy. The drydown is woody from the sandalwood and amber. This gives a slightly masculine quality so this can be easily pull of me men too. It is also soft spicy because of the cinnamon and a bit of sultry from the insence. It does not remind me hypnotic poison but it reminds me of dsquared want and maybe amour by kenzo. Both two are powdery vanilla scents. The difference is that grain de soleil is even more warm and spicy. It would be an amazing comforting and cosy scent for crisp fall or cold winter days. If you are a vanilla lover like me, give this a try, it worths!!

Extremely brown sugary sweet just too sweet for my taste. Very rich and beautiful. On the right body chemistry this would be beautiful.

This is a perfume that does the business. It may not be the most groundbreaking or luxurious or fantastically decadent thing you’re ever smelled – but it certainly smells at least three times as good as it “ought” to, for that very reasonable price.
Personally I’d usually want my vanilla and amber more spicy / funky / twisted, but Fragonard have done some magic here, making a smooth, gentle fragrance which is just plain good with anything. It’s got a beautiful inner warmth – it’s aptly named, somehow a drop of this really does bring a ‘speck of sunshine’ to even dreary grey day. It doesn’t cloy, though it’s extremely tenacious and long lasting. It would hold its own in straight tests with many far more expensive amber-based scents, IMO.
I tried this on one wrist and Fragonard Soleil on the other, and found it very very hard to distinguish them after a while – they are subtly different, but both gorgeous and both in the same sort of space. I couldn’t pin down the precise variation, but if you like one, it’s odds on you’d like the other. (Or maybe the full Fragonard mini set(s).

@sleepy*weasel, it is indeed gorgeous stuff. I have Indecence – both vintage and current release, and used to own Casmir – and although Grain de Soleil did not remind me of those two, now that you mention it, they do share that sort of high-end, creamy vanillic quality. Of the three, I find Grain de Soleil has the most complex and interesting progression through top, middle and base. It opens with prominent dry notes – incense and cinnamon?, then slowly morphs into a soothing, vanillic floral. Definitely a golden elixir.

  12. :

    3 out of 5

There’s definitely an olfactory relationship to Organza Indecence here, and Chopard Casmir as well. I wonder if many people have multi bottles of all 3… like I do… it’s a particular vanilla quality, that I adore smelling of. You don’t get any complaints with any of these three scents. As for Grain de Soleil, I must have the Shower stuff as well. Lovely stuff xx

Is there such a thing as love at first sniff? I smelled it accidentally on a recent trip to a department store. I was initially looking for Burberry Brit but this caught my nose and I HAD to buy this. I don’t smell the incense or balsams tho. To me it smells like a library and the crisp autumn air in Vancouver, Canada. For a book lover like me, it smells like home and everything amazing. My friends hate it tho… They said its a granny perfume….

This is one of the most longest lasting perfumes on my skin. Rich in cinnamon, amber and vanilla. Over time the scent mellows down to a soft vanilla amber. Great sillage.

So the story goes that I’m a geocacher and one fine day, hunting down geocaches I found this geocache where someone had left little bottle of this beautiful fragrance in the geocache box! Of course I took it along me..What a beautiful perfume…best geocache ever!

Thanks alex for the samples! Well initially i was a little seduced from the top notes…it was a warming golden oriental with cinnamon and amber….but after around 5 mins i just got hit with powdery vanilla. I really see what a fellow reviewer means about a baby smell. I like it but think the powderiness will get on my nerves so i think my sample will be enough

I won a 50ml bottle of this on eBay. A blind bid after reading the reviews here. The perfume arrived today. Oh wow what an absolute beauty of a perfume. My first experience with a Fragonard perfume. It’s warm, rich, rounded and just oozes deliciousness! I feel like I’m surrounded my a comforting cloud of a scent. It’s spicy but floral, it’s floral but gourmand. It’s a quality perfume, well blended with good sillage and is long lasting. I’m so happy I won this auction and that it has introduced me to Fragonard!

Sooo…this is my first review ever here on fragrantica.
I smelled this on one of my guests in the restaurant that i work in…and it was wonderful. So i asked her what it was…and today she brought it with her.She said it smelled differently on each person. And she was right! On my coworker this was airy floral…almost skin but better; on me…this was Hypnotic Poison maybe a little bit different but mainly HP.More elegant less naughty but deeper HP.Loved the way it smelled on her but since i already own HP…
Anyway it costs about 50 euro…so you really get a high quality fragrance for half the price

It smells like urinal cakes, baby powder and scented nappy bags. 🙁 I’m so, so gutted that I don’t like this.
(Actually, I do like it – now. After about 6 hours it turned to gorgeous powdery vanilla. Before that, though: nappy bags.)

I wanted to smell like babies and a Fragrantican recommended this perfume. It smells like babies with a hint of men’s fragrance. A touch masculine. I like it because the sillage is heavy.

Absolutely gorgeous. Powdery and soft, caressing. Oldschool perfume but not old just timeless. On me resembles Roma Laura Biagiotti, only not as sharp. I`m wearing it in the office and not even the most sensitive noses mind as the silage is close to my skin. Love this! Staying power is amazing

Hands down, THE most exceptional perfume that I own and despite being quite an accidental discovery is one that I have finished within one year (my personal best for perfume usage) and actively repurchased already. Grain de Soleil smells like nothing else! Its heady, exotic, warming and somewhat mysterious. I have never had so many compliments on a fragrance in my life nor so many requests for the name of the perfume and where to purchase it. Unusually, it works all year round! In the winter months it is warm and comforting, but in the summer heat it turns into something exotic and magical. Heaven in a bottle.

I love this perfume so much. It was my first from the house of Fragonard and was a blind buy. I can not stop smelling my arm as it is so gorgeous. So beautifully soft, warm, spicy, with a little vanilla. I have never quite smelled anything like this and it will always be in my perfume wardrobe from now. The heliotrope and sandalwood makes this so beautiful. Sillage and longevity are very good. I am so pleased that this little gem is in my collection. Many that I own I will never repurchase, but this one I will for sure. Perfume heaven for me.

  27. :

Wow. The first thing you get is orange blossom, but it soon becomes creamy sweet vanilla and balsam. I thought this would be lovely, and it is. As usual with Fragonard, top quality and no headaches. If you like vanilla scents, this is a must-try. I’m not usually so keen on vanillas, but this combination is gorgeous. And it lasts a long, long time… the dry-down is a balsamic sweet musk. Addictive! 🙂

I can bet you 100% that this perfume has pepper note so intensively almost burns my nose…. They should add that note to the pyramid..

I tested this one today for the first time and I need to say that on initial spray I was disappointed.
Anyway it reminded me the opening of PB Ambre Gris, so I waited.
It smells somehow cheap and thick, more or less like those street vendors “opium” or “oriental”.
Then it melts better and the result is a nice spicy oriental with beautiful listed notes but hard to pick up individually.
No HP here at all. This is spicy oriental vanilla, HP is a glomp of sugary vanilla/almond and whatelse.
Grain de Soleil smells definetely better to my nose and more interesting for sure.
Its evolution is complex and a little old school. The spices and woods blend together effortless.
I’m sure I’ve smelled something similar in the ’80s.
    Not terribly original.
It’s strong, powerful with moderate sillage and great duration.
Perfect for a cold windy autumn day, but nothing exceptional IMO

A bit of a wallop with the old vanilla bat, but if you can bear to wait til it stops screaming, this is actually rather nice. A jolly gourmand for winter, with incredible staying power. My scarf is still scented with a spray I put there three days ago. It’s warm, it’s spicy, it’s welcoming. Not a fragrance to dissect for notes, but all in all, a delightful cuddle in a bottle.

  31. :

    3 out of 5

The opening notes of this little number are a pure vanilla bomb – I have to say that vanilla isn’t amongst my favourite notes, but this one isn’t as cloying as some. On drydown it becomes very powdery, a cosy, powdery sort of fluffy angora sweater kind of scent.
The iris is doing it’s best to come through, but it could be better if it were a little more forceful. I don’t get any white flowers at all and heliotrope, if it’s there at all, isn’t making itself heard.
Maybe I detect a little patchouli, which I am liking a lot these days and a touch of sandalwood, but I do feel they are too subtle to fight the vanilla which is dominating at the moment – although the initial explosion has calmed down after a half hour.
To sum up though, I’m not sure about this one, after several hours I could just smell vanilla and it was like vanilla cake. I may not keep this, but I’ll give it a chance by maybe trying it layered with something totally different.

Grain de Soleil has some major lasting power! It will survive all day and into the next, if you allow it. The sillage is nice, but it is a powerhouse. Be aware of where and when you choose wear this perfume.
There is a dryness to the opening that is powdery, leathery, and slightly rubbery. The heliotrope gives the fragrance a sort of haziness. The white flowers remain in the background, while the vanilla and cinnamon are light complements. The overall feel of this medley is kind of dry, but after the first two hours, you are left with a smooth vanilla.
It is not one of my favourites, however, I do know a fair number of women who have fallen for Grain de Soleil.

  33. :

    5 out of 5

So many say that this is a cool weather fragrance but must disagree. I wear this whenever the mood strikes me and I get more compliments when it is warm out than any other time. I have never experienced so many compliments from men especially. If I was on the market, I wouldn’t think twice about this being my choice for a fragrance.
Warm, inviting, sexy, this juice has it all. It is not for those that prefer timid fragrances. It will end up wearing you if you don’t have the chemistry to pull it off.
Longevity on me is easily 8-10 hours, if not more.
Silage is moderate with minimal application.

  34. :

    5 out of 5

There is a rush of vanilla at the start. The dry down is pleasantly powdery. I am surprised more reviewers don’t mention the mint as it’s right out front there with the vanilla!

  35. :

    A “grain” of beauty.
The eau de parfum is warm, elegant and long lasting.
The composition is well constructed and it is obvious that Fragonard used high quality materials for this perfume.

First spray was ALL jasmine. About an hour later i began to get the creaminess of amber and sweetness of vanilla. You can definitely smell the orange blossom on my skin somewhere in the beginning and lingering in the back. I get NO iris on me at all. I ALSO do not get a wiff of powder, THANK GOD!!

Gorgeous! This is right up my alley.
This starts out with a lovely whoosh of all things exotic, incensey and rich! The jasmine is there doing it’s sexy thing but the main notes that you can tell are just WAITING to come out to play are the amber, vanilla and powdery iris. I would even go so far as to say it leans slightly over to th masculine side when it’s wet, but that changes.
It does change quite quickly from this inital blast and settles into your skin like a butter, the vanilla in this so very syrupy and warm like Hypnotic Poison as some people have said, but this is alot more exotic smelling due to the wisps of incense that are interertwined with the other notes.
It’s like hypnotic poison has gone on a self discovery to a temple in the mountains and come back a wiser person. haha.
This is great. It lingers around you like a powdery bubble of vanillary, cozy incense. Winner! I want a big bottle now!

Thanks to Alchimia72 who gently sent me a decant I could discover this beautiful fragrance . I find it very well blended and classy . I do not find it overly sweet and I really love the powdery hint . Great oriental I would dare wear all year long . I am being struck by a strong desire to own a full bottle of Grain de Soleil !

  43. :

I love this fragrance. It’s very oriental, spicy and particular. I don’t find any other perfume which is similar and I don’t agree with the comparison to Hypnotic Poison: it’s completely different! But as a strange thing I can’t smell it on my skin after 1 hour, but other people around me can smell it! Maybe it’s my nose which can detect this gorgeous fragrance. Recommended.

I am so pleased to be able to add this fantastic scent to my wardrobe, now that Marks & Spencer are stocking Fragonard. They are exclusive stockists in the UK for this brand, according to one of their sales assistants.
Grain de Soleil is a wonderful warm, rich, smooth, spicy oriental as others have said with great staying power. I absolutely love it.
I thought some of you might be interested to know that evernia prunastri (oak moss) extract is listed as an ingredient on the box.

  45. :

This fragrance is very, very rich. The iris and orange blossom are present in the beginning, with some rose. The heliotrope is the star with its almond/cherry scent. the drydown is mostly vanilla, amber, a little patchouli, strong sandalwood and incense with a dash of cinnamon. I really love this scent. I am a fan of sweet, warm scents. This one is delicious! Excellent quality, even with a high level of sweetness, it is not generic like most department store scents. If these notes appeal to you…you will love this perfume!!! I would have to say it reminds me of Tiramisu.

  46. :

    5 out of 5

This is like the most luxurious and softest cashmere sweater you can imagine. I can feel the incence, the woods, amber and cinnamon, but even when this is deeply oriental it`s not overpowering or heavy.I can easily see myself wearing this year round.
Grain De Soleil manages to be very airy, soft and sophisticated. Very well made composition, Fragonard really knows the secrets of perfume making.

  47. :

    5 out of 5

A smooth, complex and bright oriental with a slight touch of something cool that reminds me of men’s cologne. Looking at the notes, I have no idea what that might be. Has anyone else felt this? I skimmed through all the reviews hoping to find a mention of this coolness, but apparently I am the only one?
And as others have mentioned, fantastic sillage and lasting power.
Update: If you have this one and want to save money by using less of it, choose one of your bras and just get a little of this perfume on it, and then wear that bra instead of spraying yourself with the perfume next time. The bra I wore a week ago STILL smells strongly of Grain de Soleil!

  48. :

    3 out of 5

What a great fragrance! I think it’s a darker, more powdery version of Hypnotic poison: I can smell the heliotrope, the incense and the cinnamon notes. I can also notice the patchouli, that I usually don’t like, but here it’s sweetened by the powdery note, and it’s pleasant. For me, this is winter in a bottle!

  49. :

Grain de Soleil is a truly luscious fragrance. I’m finding myself falling in love with it, and being surprised in having never discovered this fragrance up until now.
It’s mostly floral with hints of powder and spices. I find it very heavy on the orris root, orange blossom and jasmine. It settles on the skin very warmly, making it the perfect fragrance for those chilly days.
I was surprised that Grain de Soleil is so sweet. The cinnamon and vanilla accords really shine out, providing a slight gourmand feel. Every component of this composition works well, so much so that it’s obvious that this fragrance has been composed with quality in mind.
The sillage is just about right, being not too strong nor too weak. The scent itself soothes me and entices me in a way that is hard to describe. Grain de Soleil is somewhere between an oriental floral and a spicy gourmand. It really is a treasure.
Grain de Soleil is right up there with the likes of Billet Doux by the same house. They are both very classy, long lasting and feminine fragrances with that touch of golden elegance. I recommend.

Why o why must I fall in lust yet again with something I can’t have…
I think I must be getting better at picking out notes that work well for me because this is the 3rd fume this week that I’ve tested and have fallen for. Anyhow… I adore the rose and cinnamon fusion in this. I am satisfied with its creamy amber luxery throughout too. Could be worn as an everyday or reserved for date nights. It’s versatile yet doesn’t bore you numb. This is intriguing… an addictive wrist sniffer. Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner.

Warm, soft, spicy cinnamon with soulwarming vanilla ,amber and woody undertone. On me this scent is absolutely gentle with rich depht in it.The incence and the patchouli gives a medicin-like bitter taste in the end. Pleasant, cosy fragrance, perfect for cold winter days.

Opens with a burst of cinnamon and heady floral, then dries down with vanilla, followed by amber and sandalwood. As it settles into the skin, I get a honey note, with a hint of orris; and the florals recur, warmer and more rounded, over a layer of incense. This is a very nice perfume indeed…in fact it’s delicious. Like curling up in a golden velvet robe on a leather chaise by a fire, with a glass of mead in hand. Could easily become one of my daily perfumes—It’s that comforting and yet interesting, never insipid.

I really love this perfume. Its sweet, soft and warm.
On my skin it opens soft and sweet with the orris and orange flower. I can also smell the cinnamon at the back ground. When the perfume settels the heliotrope and vanilla are there. It gives the scent a slightly powdery feeling wich I love. Turns into a warm, sweet and soft woodsy scent that lingers on skin very long. Would love to have a bottle

    Hi,
my feelings right now comes here; its saturday evening and I am preparing to go out with my Loved one to have a diner. Black dress, black eyeliner, much mascara some eyeshadow and red lipstick. All is crowned by magical, mysterious and tempting perfume and this one is Grain De Soleil for this evening. ***<3<3<3***

Un parfum très original (Fragonard est décidément une petite marque française à découvrir)vanille-cannelle, un brin encaustique. Une odeur qui enveloppe et réchauffe!

  56. :

    4 out of 5

it made my eyes becoming wet like an overdose of hairspray at first, but yes it’s quite nice once it seddles down, the sandalwood and amber are strooong, yet powdery, woody and spicy, the orris makes it very earthy and mysterious, some hints of vanilla barely detectable…
this frag has no sweet, what’s quite unusual. i don t know yet if i like it or not, it’s kinda very mature, not oldfashioned but a bit harsh and dry, earthy and spicy.
i was expecting really something else by the notes… hmmm i can t distingue different stages on this perfume, it’s almost linear but very complex and well blendet.
it becomes better and better with the time and the slightly sweet vanilla lingers trough the earty-woody notes. maybe this should be applied with ligher hand than i did to enjoy it from top to bottom.
    sillage enormeous, staying power enormeous.
it’s for shure a very good quality perfume, but maybe not daring enough for me.
bottle lovely, a stunning collector object!
add.note: i m using it today the second time and i did apply it today by dusting it overall my body and hair…. it’s fantastic! the scent is really strong, so a little goes far and it can easely be oversprayed, what can induce headache or sneez-attack (hairspray-effect). handeled with light hand it’s a very very nice scent! love it.

As i review grain de soleil, it is a cold, snowy day, and im cozied up with a big sweater, and some hot tea. I have to say, i definitely found another “sunshine in a bottle!” This fragrance immediately warmed me entirely. I am sitting surronded by a golden aura of sweet amber, vanilla, and soft (very delicately)powdery heliotrope, which is a summer favorite of mine. A jasmine, honey, cinnamon trio has seemed to settle in for the long haul, and rather than getting individual notes, i am enveloped in a warm, golden glow. I feel as though i have a soft feminine, aura of summery joy floating about me, and i cannot express my delight in the feeling this fragrance has evoked for me. I feel very sexy, and edible! Normally anything with even a hint of powder is dead to me immediately, but this lives on.. And i continue to love it! The dry down reminds me a little of hypnotic poison, that being said, it has become necessary to get my hands on a bottle of both of them! I cannot wait to spritz this on when we take vacatin this spring! Grain de soleil and mountain sunshine may just overload my joy sensors!
Update: this beauty has MONSTER sillage. Soft sweetness greeted me the next morning, and lingered on my sweater for days. Verdict: well worth a purchasing a big bottle!

This scent is rich and complex. It reminds me of Miss Me by Stella Cadente (which has been discontinued). That’s why I didn’t buy a bottle, because I have something too similar.
I can definitely smell cinnamon, incense, vanilla, and some other exquisite florals. Grain de Soleil conveys mystery and allure. It’s an extremely fair price considering most perfumes on the market can’t surpass it in quality.
Update 5 years later: Unfortunately it is no longer anywhere near the potency that it used to be. It is dull and powdery at first, then it dries down to a muted amber with white flowers. Still nice, but it’s lost its “mojo” and has become rather ordinary. So sad that the constant ingredient bans of the IFRA destroy perfumes like this.

This smells sooo gorgeous! I am not good at picking out specific notes unless they are real obvious but I am loving this perfume! Once again, Fragonard has impressed me!

i just ordered a 50ml bottle of this without smelling it and i just know i’ll love it! Fragonard can do no wrong in my eyes except discontinuing Baroque 🙂

I have but a wee sample of this and it’s not very jasmine-like to me, there’s maybe a hint of it with another floral, but I mainly get the cinnamon, amber and vanilla. But also, strangely, there is something in it that slightly, very, very, slightly, reminds me of People of the Labyrinths – Luctor et Emergo. They’re very different fragrances, but there’s just something I can’t explain. I know it sounds strange, because the image I have with POTL is of wandering through an antique shop in midst of winter or the damp undergrowth of Mirkwood with a basket of dried cherries. POTL is definitely deeper and darker, but with Grain de Soliel, it’s like I was in the deep dark woods and just wandered out into the warm sunshine (sans cherry basket =:)
