The drydown reminds me of Jovan Touche (1979) which is what I like about it…powdery and soft.

Ginger musk…hmmm…???
I’ve come to have no expectations when trying a Montale fragrance as they either are exactly what you expect (usually some Oud/Rose variation) or totally not what you expect from the cryptic name or regardless of a note pyramid.
What you can be a little more certain of and almost always expect, is atomic strength but even then sometimes a soft scent.
‘Ginger’ from Montale and I’m expecting some sort of rough, firey, distilled ginger beer, consomme of epic proportions and enough musk to sink a battleship…but I’m wrong again!
Ginger musk is a sweet and unique fruity, dark berry cocktail which does indeed have some ginger at the back of it (somewhere?) and makes for a really odd fragrance. I’ll be honest the olfactory adventurer and childlike sweet tooth in me immediately adored the sweet and unique opening. It’s like some foreign candy, an approximated and synthetic fruitiness whereby you can’t actually tell what kind of fruit it’s supposed to be??
If Ginger musk was deep and thoughtful in the base notes (perhaps some booze or even Aoud?) then fine but it has this silky smooth musk which is not animal at all but ever present.
I loved this fragrance right up until a couple of hours in, then I began to have my doubts about it? Just in terms of being a fragrance I wanted to add to my collection I thought the quirkiness would carry it and it’s true I’ve not smelled much like it out there. However on the same day I got my girlfriend to try Roses Musk (a scent I subsequently tried myself) and even though it was a tired combo of notes I much preferred the drydown. Truth is I was just a little sick of ginger musk after a while although the drydown is soft and almost powdery. I have to go with my gut reaction and it was on the whole positive so it gets a ‘Like’ from me.
It lasts very well and projects in the first couple of hours atomically! I applaud it for being a talking point and that’s what fragrance is about at the end of the day.
I sense it’s a polarizing one this, worth trying and making up your own mind.

Triple-distilled shallac. Top notes hit high-Z effortlessly, as my chattering teeth can attest. Useful as a negative stimulus for obedience training of dogs.
Once dry down occurs, wearing Ginger Musk is like doing découpage with someone chewing bubblegum.
Caveat emptor.
Not for use on skin.

I wasn’t looking for Ginger when I was given a sample of this…This juice smells incredible…I’m shocked frankly and I own over 80 colognes…I look for the richness of the aroma and this one has it for sure despite the reviews here ! This can be worn anywhere, anytime in my opinion. Try a sample of it on eBay if you can find one, or ask around here on Fragantica to find a sample of it.
Like one of the reviewers here mentioned, if you’re looking for a super skunky almost unbearable musk…look eleswhere…but if you would like your musk gently hidden but yet noticeable, you’ll love this one!
Scent 8 ~ 10

Sweet ginger, or should I say sweet amber/musk?
I was expecting something powdery and slightly sweet counterbalanced by the spicy fresh bite of ginger.
Instead I get a sweet, syrupy fragrance. The ginger is hidden somewhere, probably under tons os sweet sticky syrup.
If you have in mind a fresh cut ginger, forget about it.

First and foremost I’d like to say that I truly dislike this train wreck! when I put it on it reminds me of when I was kid having to be around older and elderly women. It definitely reminds me of my old elementary school principal, I don’t dislike for those reasons alone but more so because I’m getting no ginger at all and feels way to perfumey and thick to me. I own a good 12-15 mls of this that I can’t seem to get rid of…..

I’ve now worn Montale GINGER MUSK a few times, thanks to this house’s generous-sized samples, which make it possible to seriously experience a perfume before buying. Good work Pierre or reasonable facsimile…
GINGER MUSK is an odd creation, really very eccentric. It’s working against some fairly well-established expectations, so I’m not surprised at its middling ratings and reception. On the one hand, people looking for a musk perfume are usually looking for something on the skanky side: musk, at its heart, even when imitated synthetically (as it is today), is an animalic note. On the other hand, ginger nearly always appears in aromatic colognes.
What GINGER MUSK does is to combine a hefty dose of musk with a sweet, culinary, baking-type ginger note. This is not fresh ginger, it’s more like a ginger syrup, or perhaps a light gingerbread. Mixed in with the musk, it doesn’t quite cut it as a gourmand, and the sweetness makes it not seem like a true musk composition either. In order to appreciate and wear GINGER MUSK, it seems that one must be of a contradictory nature, loving both gourmand, sweet compositions, and musky, animalic, sensual ones–and at the same time!
This combination does not quite work for me, but I enjoyed the experience and do recommend this perfume for testing, because it is well made and you’re unlikely to encounter anything else quite like it!

I love ginger. But this isn’t ginger, it’s just a sticky sweet heady mess. Had to wash it off.
docijus – :
This starts off very soapy on my skin, and initially I did not like it. The drydown, however, is its saving grace for me…soft musky ginger, it just kind of floats around me. So, not a favourite, but I do like it.
Sharik901 – :
I finally got to sample this and find it to be a slightly sweet masculine scent. The ginger is warming and slightly sharp, balanced nicely by the musk. A bit too masculine for my tastes but still a well-balanced fragrance.

Sickening sweet abomination. Loud, exhausting and even a tad vulgar. MEH.
Rating: 3/10

at 1st let me THANK Floof for the sample !
The Thousand and One Nights in a bottle ,wandering around an Arab market in a robe of embroidered silk ,incense reeked around me .. as an Arab i would appreciate this scent , um not a fan of arabian fumes and oils but this one is really nice , great mixture of arabian air and scents ,
the spice smells incredibly alluring. its heavy lidded, come hither with aroma makes me think of the irresistible lure of Scheherazade and the sensuality of sultry arabian nights.the base sweetened by the blackberries and enriched by musk..!
its not my kind of fragrances but if i could be an Arabian princess i would definitely wear Ginger Musk 😉
note* i would appreciate alot sniffing this on a a man !! 🙂 LOL

It’s a very boring scent. A little soapy, can’t really smell it, because it’s gone in an hour
yuri333 – :
there is something in this that makes it smell somewhat like ‘sexual’ (by Michel Germain) which i do not like. if you are looking for a sweet ginger (like gingerale) you are barking up the wrong tree….however if you like real ginger you might enjoy this perfume. the drydown is lovely, but the first hour or so is not exactly my cup of tea. I was hoping the blackcurrant and red berries would have a bigger part in this, and really it is mainly ginger.

Ginger and musk! A very nice fragrance that I must have, tender, silky, fresh at the beginning, almost not spicy. Ginger is tender, and musk is very light.
