Description

“A force than cannot be defined, gracefully balanced between Alpha strengths and feminine vulnerabilities. Attempts fail to classify this ambiguous state of seduction simply because there lies no explanation to the phenomenon of this androgynous
prowess. Savage and delicate at once, this very fine line plays tricks on the mind. Mysteriously one soul possesses all that is alluring in man and woman, a Genre all its own.” – a note from the brand.

Genre by Edward Bess is a Leather fragrance for women and men. This is a new fragrance. Genre was launched in 2016. The nose behind this fragrance is Carlos Benaim. The fragrance features olibanum, suede and leather.

Since owning Cuir Ottoman and Ann Gerard Cuir de Nacre, I have been on the hunt for that realistic suede, handbag-esque, refined niche leather scent. The hunt comes to an abrupt halt with Genre. This is clean yet slightly resinous-sweet, very smooth, warm and reminiscent of brand new suede jacket. It is a mixture of that handbag-esque leather, suede, and only a whisper of raw “living stallion” accord they call it. Which is another way to describe a raw-animalic-leathery nuance. Arabian Horse by Pierre Guillaume was a prime example of a pronounced “stallion” accord. None of these notes stand out over the other which really sets this fragrance apart from the 3 aforementioned. I would probably change the Main Accords in the top right of this listing to read as such: Leathery, Musky, Sweet, Powdery, Balsamic, Animalic. I would not call this masculine nor would I would call it feminine. It is somewhere in between, different from the rest of the leather scents I’ve come across, and a overall…a successful blind buy.

I blind bought this based on notes. I had no idea that it was one of the finalist for Indie Perfume of the Year. So what is Genre? It is an “almost hard to believe” sweetened musky thin veiled frankincence composition. Baked with the resin are delicate shavings of suede and leather giving Genre an aromatic feel. No doubt, leather is the basenote but don’t expect the hardcore full grain natural stuff. So when Fragrantica mentions animalic as an accord, they’re strictly referring to the musk. Fans of Cuir Ottoman outta check this out. When it comes to the word love, I don’t fall to often. This is a love.
