Description

Frankensmellie is an ongoing project by Smell Bent, described by the house as “an ever-changing blend. The perfume dujour, if you will. What has the mad scientist cooked up for you today?”

The first Frankensmellie fragrance was created in 2011, and the scents are typically released as limited editions, though some popular editions have made periodic reappearances in the Smell Bent collection. The nose behind this fragrance is Brent Leonesio.

So I got The Fall as a bonus last time.. It wasn’t even on the website anymore so I was quite surprised; what’s even more surprising is the reviews though…smoky like Bois d’Ascese? Not even close. The opening is the smell of Tiger Balm–a Chinese pain relief that has 11% camphor & 10% menthol–which is something you’d apply to bruises (I see what you did there, Brent lol Apparently we have similar childhood memory). How come I’m the only one who’s thrown off by it?? Blegh.
Anyway, after the opening finally wears off, a very pleasant woody-incense surfaces 🙂
Since I got a lot of samples, I’M SELLING THIS ONE (4ML) FOR $5
    *U.S. only. Message me!

Since I can’t find Fashiony on the site, I might as well put a review here…
He described it as “the inside of a designer handbag – crumpled 20s, creamy lipstick, and zippers against the scent of expensive suede”
I didn’t pay much attention to “zippers” at first, but that turned out to be the strongest aspect of the fragrance; it’s got an uncomfortable acrid metallic edge that resembles the taste of spoon or fork after running through aluminum. The lipstick seems to have aged with the “crumpled 20s” suede handbag as well–stale, sour, and no longer usable.. It’s quite a mess

(This review is for Artist’s Studio)
An interesting Brosius-esque trip into photorealism from smell bent! This pretty much smells exactly how I expected it to. The opening is terpernic, with a nice solvent quality that is reminiscent of Sharpie markers or paint thinner. Shortly after the initial blast wears off, some pencil shavings and an aroma that reminds me of crayon wax take over. It’s sort of dirty and dry, but there is an airiness that keeps it from becoming stuffy. I think there must be a good dose of ISO e super or a similar aroma chemical because it has that interesting quality where you occasionally “catch a whiff” of it, even after it seems to disappear, which is somewhat quick. All in all, I’m happy to have it for $30 from the garage sale! Certainly interesting and fun, if not polished (as to be expected from a frankensmellie, I suppose.)

Yay! They have pages now! I move them out onto the individual perfume pages as they become available. Frankensmellies without pages are still reviewed here.
Pepper Ylang – To me, this is Lauderade (the mythical Estee Lauder counterpart to Guerlinade). It’s pretty, it’s strong, it’s baby Youth Dew. I feel like I’ve been in an EL outlet a little too long. It lasts for hours and the sillage blasted one of my poor coworkers, needs a light spraying hand.

I really wish I could review these individually, as I have quite a few Frankensmellie samples. I will edit and add here and there, as many of these are *really* lovely/interesting/worth smelling.
Pepper Ylang- This one is very simple and a favorite. The ylang is light and pleasant. The pepper is a spicy blast in the top notes that I wish would stay just a little longer. The peppery-ness lingers a bit, and is brought out by heat (I notice a pepper revival if I am baking, leaning over the stove, what have you).
Florist’s Fridge- Wow! This one is kind of impressive. A distinctly chilly floral. It has that “fridge smell” and wafts of light mixed florals. I find this one lasts on my clothes for hours.
The Fall- Addictive. If you like smelling like you have been camping. I don’t know why I bought another sample instead of a FB because this one is a keeper for me. It’s strange. Brings back some nice memories for me of camping in a teepee in my youth, especially when I layer with L’Artisan Jour de Fete. Also it’s very long lasting.
Gardenia Oud- Hmm…where’s the oud? Who cares the gardenia is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Light delicate petal scent. Very fresh and pleasant. Also I find this helps Chanel Gardenia stick around longer (that one is gone in 60 seconds on me and it makes me want to cry cuz it’s such a delight). If you’re looking for a very simple, delicate, almost innocent gardenia this one is worth a try.
The Yard Next Door- I’m testing this one now and I’m sooo not sure what is going on. At first it’s fresh, kinda floral, grassy and sweet…but after a few hours I smell an odd mix of the floral notes but less fresh more cocoa? I’m intrigued and might have to have another spray and pay better attention. Fascinating to say the least, and rather lovely at every turn (so far).
Cocoa Rose- There’s not much cocoa going on. Not very dusty either but the rose is a delight! I can get bored with rose fairly quickly, but this one keeps me interested. Reminds me of the rose in Vengeance Extreme. This one is stronger than some of the others, really sticks around on clothes going strong for about 5 hours or so.

Finally bought myself some Florist’s Fridge. Thanks to everyone who mentioned how good this one is. You were so right. And it is so SPOT ON for its name. Pure sweetness of flowers, a little bit of green leaves and stems, some cool and refreshing note. Voila! I’m opening the door at the florist’s to select my bouquet … 🙂

My Frankensmellie batch was delightful fun. It included cocoa rose, which I expected to adore but just wouldn’t stick around on my skin (this is a frequent problem for me.) Gardenia oud, on the other hand, smelled heavenly and lasted!! Florist’s fridge smelled like a flower lovers dream, with a touch of chill, but I had to re spritz to get through my day. Still. . I loved it. Tobacco jasmine was more like fresh tobacco leaves than an ashtray so was surprisingly nice. Finally, the yard next door smelled like a Midwestern garden in summer, right after the grass was mowed and a light rain muted the flowers. Yum.

This review is for the 4 ml edt travel sprays. I’ll be adding to this as I work my way through my order.
    S13#916 ‘The Fall’ Frankensmellie.
It opens with a bituminous note, very resinous. This evokes the smell of asphalt, and I also am catching a slight whiff of something almost like bike tires. From there on there is more resin, but it’s more like incense rather than asphalt and deep, smoky, charred wood. I don’t detect any floral notes after 30 minutes, it’s all about those smoky woods and burning incense right now. Overall I’m a fan, I like wood and incense notes. I’m very impressed with this olfactory tale. I just wish I could have taken the whole trip and come out with those flowers in the end.
ETA: Those flowers never did come through for me even after 12+ hours. I will say the longevity was good though. I applied before work, and I could still smell traces of incense and wood before my shower this evening.
S13#310 ‘The Yard Next Door’ Frankensmellie.
This one is hard for me to parse out the separate notes. It DOES smell like a wet lawn, but in a very pleasant way. It reminds me of a spring evening outside after a storm. There is definitely a green grassy smell here, like fresh cut lawn along with something almost like compost. Wet leaves and mulch maybe. For lack of a better descriptor there is also something that makes me think of wet sidewalk, like sitting out on a porch after it’s rained hard. Finally, there is a floral note, to my nose it almost smells like tuberose. Very interesting fragrance, and as strange as it sounds very wearable. After an hour, the sharp green notes have mellowed into a sweeter floral, and the compost is still there as well. The evolution of this frag is very impressive.

I have #900 Original Green Patchouli and it is wonderful. This patchouli is soft earthy aroma, with a slight tang of moss. The dry-down is nice and settles into a much lighter version of the first blast. I thought it faded completely but my husband complimented me on the scent 10 hours later. So it has some staying power even if it is quite light. It reminds me of the hard-to-find Jovan Fresh Patchouli spray. I highly recommend this scent.

this is a review for S13#916 “the fall” — it’s smokey asphalt at the start & turns into sweet-ish burnt wood. I like it but then I’m weird 😉

OK, I’ve just put on Frankensmellie Florist’s Fridge. It is a wonderful, full-bodied floral, as promised by the name. MUST buy a full bottle of this.

I received 4 Frankensmellies in the 4 ml travel sprays, and so far I’ve tried Green Patchouli and The Yard Next Door. I loved both of them, but Green Patchouli faded almost immediately, while The Yard Next Door had excellent longevity and good sillage. They are both edts, so I’m not sure why they were so different.

this is a review for S13#310 “the yard next door” — it is absolutely gorgeous, smells like honeyed chocolate. I wish I lived next door! have to settle for buying a FB.

    229) S13#916 The Fall
Inspired by a bike fall which earned him both arms in plaster, Brent Leonesio was able to removing from the memory of his accident a great perfume. A light version of Bois d’Ascèse (N. Goodsir). The head is the sudden shock of the nose on cold bitumen and then in the heart the bite of burnt wood but at base/the end it’s all about flowers! This amazing evolution of matter makes this one my favorite fragrances by this Nose
I wish him many serious accidents because this kind of perfume deserves a few human sacrifices.

This is a review of S12#599- ‘Musk Melange’. Really lovely, cozy scent- an armchair to curl up in on a cool, drizzly day as I write this. As expected, the sillage is soft and intimate: traces of orris, benzoin, creamy vanilla, chocolate- and maybe a touch of oudh?- grace a well-behaved blend of white musks. There is just a touch of one of the macrocyclic musks (muscone?) to suggest skin, but nothing like the skank of Commando or his ‘Untitled #8’. With a confident hand, Brent has concocted a vision of ambery, vanilla-ice-cream-on-skin- and I treasure it!
Oh- and a little champaca, maybe?

56)S13#310 The Yard next door: is the smell of autumn in the muddy forest, an incredible record of decaying vegetation and fog. it’s cinema 4D? (importable but collectible)
S12#920B Rose+Cocoa: a rose filmed in black and white in an atmosphere of discovery hidden treasure in the attic of grandmother?
S12#599 Musc: Olala it’s good! A little Musc Koublai Khan (lutens) i’m in heaven. (Maybe is the closeup during the love scene)

There is a new Frankensmellie in town! Received my sample of S13#310 “the yard next door” yesterday and today I have ordered not one, but two bottles!
It really captures a memory I have from my university days, walking home from writing my thesis in the middle of the night, it is May and the old trees in the university park are in bloom. I even remember writing a poem about how much more the trees smelled at night.

This is a review of S12#1109 “spicy ambergris”:
    Animalic spicy!
It starts with sandalwood, spice and lots of dirty wet dog musk. I thought it would be something along the line with Eau de Merveilles, but it’s not: it is denser and spicier, and the sandalwood remains the most prominent note.
It’s a very fascinating scent actually, I almost enjoy it, but I don’t think I’m ready to wear it in public!

I am testing S12#920B – Cocoa Rose, and I find this to be a very successful combination! It’s a dark, velvety rose scent, reminding me of L’Artisan – Voleur de Rose. I don’t get any dusty facets on my skin. I have to say I no longer feel I want Voleur de Rose since I am now the proud owner of a small travel spray of this lovely little Franken Smellie!

I want to like it, but there is something a little freaky in this. Franken Smellie is a little monster of some sorts…if you we’re in the mood to be monsterish, this might work. Not for me today.

hmm, I wonder how a person rates these. Because this is an ever changing recipe. Sort of whatever Brent is working on at the moment type thing. If you check out his Franken-Smellie for today Sept 1 2012, it’s a Musk Melange. Not my thing, so I’m not going to order… but if you check back next month, something totally different may be listed under “Franken-Smellie”… he calls it a sort of “Soup de Jour” type thing. So, I’ll be curious to see if people come here to rate his Franken-Smellies…
October ’12 update: Okay, so I bought this month’s FS… “Cocoa Rose”. I asked Brent, on his FB page, what notes are in it and what inspired it, and here is what he stated:
Brent: The frankensmellies are an odd bunch. the idea is to do perfume skethces. you can work and work and work on a composition – sometimes work it to death. frankensmellies are quick compositions usually based around the use of one ingredient. the idea is to not overthink it, to instead rely on instinct. s12#920B is about the pairing of 2 dusty, rich ingredients – cocoa and damask rose. the composition is darkly retro and has a 40s vibe to it. the damask rose is really the star and this extract smells deliciously expensive. damask has a sort of chocolate facet to it, so it isn’t much of a stretch to amp up it with cocoa. patchouli, musk, jasmine and clove round her out and i think you’ll love this one with the change of the weather. she’s grand, she’s delicious and she’s headed your way!
