Essence in Color by Narciso Rodriguez is the exact same scent as the original, just packaged in a striking purple bottle. I miss this fragrance immensely and wish that Narciso Rodriguez had never discontinued it.
Essence is a clean, crisp, uncomplicated laundry musk on my skin. I tended to reach for this fragrance the most on really hot Summer days. It was a great go-to for when I didn’t want something heavy or overly complex, I just wanted to smell clean.
It captures the scent of clean sheets blowing in the breeze or having just been laid out on the bed, ready for you to luxuriate in the feeling of crisp, clean linen. There are very few scents on the market today that represent this feeling as well as Narciso Rodriguez’s Essence.
Sadly Essence’s discontinuation was partly due to Narciso Rodriguez For Her in the EDP and EDT concentrations being better sellers for the brand. The clean, shower-fresh musk approach of Essence, was most likely received by some consumers as being too bland and boring.
I look back on Essence by Narciso Rodriguez as a fragrance I was proud to have owned in both the regular EDP and this attractively packaged, Essence In Color.

I love this! But it doesn’t last on my skin, sprayed on my blouse and the fragrance is still lovely. But I do love the scent. Clean, fresh – my favorite.

The first spray of Essence in color reminds me Anna Sui by Anna Sui, the classic one.
The association it’s not only because of the purple color of the bottle, I think is do to the iris, which is very prominent in the beginning of both fragrances.
Then Essence in color envolves to very rosy scent, at least to my nose the rose it’s prominent in the drydown.
At the end Essence it’s in the other side of the iris powdery spectrum. While Anna Sui exudes a sensual and cozy “powderyness”, Essence radiates a fresh, clean and determinated predisposition to face the day, and make things work without losing your smile.

Like the original NR Essence, this is also a clean slightly rosy musk with a metallic zing, although I think the metallic zing is slightly less amplified in Essence in Color than in Essence. Both are atypical musks in that they are so clean they sometimes don’t even register to me as a musk fragrance.
This is clean and bright, almost unisex, and also a little classy in a sort of cerebral way. The metallic note is part of its charm.
I own 3 versions of Essence – the original, this one (purple bottle) and the iridescent bottle flanker. To me they smell almost the same, so my supply will last me quite a while.

This is very crispy clean… it reminds me of shampooing my hair in the shower, using a very expensive shampoo… Not in a bad way… not at all… it’s actually really good!

I really really love this. It feels like you just had a shower using very expensive ingredients. I too like to layer it with other Rosy Woodsy perfumes. Or on its own. I rarely finish a bottle, let alone re-purchase the same fragrance. I have done both in this case. Adore.

This is a beautiful fragrance and I would love to have other products to layer it on. The company’s lack of disclosure and website prevents me from knowing or disclosing what is different about this from Essence. The Essence eau de Musc is the worse thing I ever tried — on me, it had a foul odor. As for this limited edition which is now out of production, it is most unfortunate that the product is flawed in some critical way, for it fades away, taking your hard-earned cash with it. Having grown up as an Estee Lauder girl, this woman knows what to expect from fragrance products in terms of staying power. Sadly, I must return the coveted second-to-last of this beautiful purple bottle. Perhaps the company could stop altering the two main fragrances (For Her and Essence) and learn how to make this lovely, complex, and sophisticated fragrance last.

I find the icy-ness of this fragrance very appealing. My nose interprets the musk/iris/rose combination similarly as it does aldehydes and it feels so uplifting to inhale! Soapy and cold in a way, like crisp air. It lasted forever on my skin! Two sprays in the evening on my wrist lasted well into the next day.
I look forward to trying this in warm weather, because I think it will be even better then. At that point I will be able to tell how different it is from the original Essence, because it felt quite similar to me!
