This is my All-Time FAVORITE Fragrance — EVER!
LOVE THIS!
I’ve been looking and looking to find something that I like in this same family of scents – but this is special, there isn’t another fragrance that comes close to this one.
Sadly, it is very expensive – and only lasts two hours on my skin. However, I’ve recently come to realize that the only sane thing to do (in this case) – is to buy a small purse sized atomizer that you carry and reapply throughout the day.
YES – it IS Worth It!
——-
Don’t ever stop making this stuff.
This is the perfume of a lifetime!
I truly LOVE and ADORE this one!
So beautiful!
So SPRING!
————
So far, I have only found three fragrances that I’d put in this same type of family…. Rare Pearls – by Avon, Jennifer Lopez – Love and Light — and Jessica Simpson’s Vintage Bloom. They are all Spring type fragrances… light, clear, transparent, wholesome, uplifting, uncomplicated. All four are subtly sexy….they beckon you in a kind and gentle way.
Eau du Ciel has a complexity which is rare. Multiple layers of different notes – which makes this very unique and you can justify the expense that goes into making something such as this. It is truly a masterpiece.
If you ever find ANYTHING similar to this – please MESSAGE ME – and let me know!
I adore Eau du Ciel! It is a fragrance of a lifetime!
Morikone – :
Eau du Ciel is a magical fragrance to me. When I was in grade school, I went to summer camp with a girl who always smelled clean like linden blossom and lily of the valley. It mimicked one of my favorite smells to this day: the scent of tree blossoms in the damp spring air at night. I have always thought of that as one of the most magically feminine smells of all time. Deeply mystified, this smell would haunt me for many years until I discovered Annick, thankfully in high school. I got a sample of Eau du Ciel and was instantly reminded of that gorgeous, pure scent. I can’t think of anything more innocent, or more feminine. If dusk in spring had a smell, it would be Eau du Ciel. I love this one!
qhu500speagoessenda – :
Very feminine, delicate and fresh. Reminds me of a bouquet of freshly picked flowers laying on cream linen in a country barn somewhere the birds are singing sweetly in the background.
Aigul – :
Τhis is a bright and fresh perfume. Airy and romantic.
A lady in white, collecting flowers in a green forest….
samopal.ru – :
It’s green, very green. Keenly green and fresh, it’s like a very stylish and clean man in a crisp cotton shirt. It’s in the same vein as EL Private Collection.
Later it has a strangely almond quality, a hint more creaminess to it but the almond is not an almond essence scent, more like an actual almond with the brown skin, the smell if you snap it in half. Then soapiness from the rosewood I think. It’s defijitely a clean scent and one I would love in hot weather but I wouldn’t say that it was exclusively for summer. I can see it being a wonderful work scent on a man. I like it on me but I think I would like it more on a man!
puskanma – :
I’m a linden fan and began with French Lime Blossom, then Tilleul Cedrat, and now Eau du Ciel. While the Fragonard is the truer linden, Eau du Ciel is so much more. Sharp, green, dry but somehow fresh, smoky but somehow clean. I enjoy it as a composition, and it lasts all day. TillyWave is spot on, it needs to be 80 degrees for it to work. In the U.K. that doesn’t happen often, but today it’s scorching and this scent is perfect. I’m glad I reached for this today. A favourite by Goutal! Xx
razor_troy – :
This is so lovely, I love wearing it on a country walk as it’s the English countryside for me, sweet and delicate floral but robust at the same time, lasts on me all day, perfect for spring/early summer, will be getting a bottle next year, too beautiful to be without.

Oh, the name of this fragrance! Eau du Ciel… It’s pure poetry.
By it’s name, I expected a very watery perfume… Almost a scented rain. On the contrary, Eau du Ciel is not ethereal, it’s earthy. Almost earth-bound. It’s like walking on a lime and orange plantation when the trees are blossoming (the exact experience I had on the week that I bought my bottle) and there’s a big rosewood dose in it. It’s citric, but it’s also naturally sweet… Almost like fresh cut grass or the Atlantic Forest after the rain. Sweet and green!
Longevity is amazing for me! I would say 10 hours… Even though it becomes a skin scent after the first hours… Sillage is also big if you spray it close to your skin.
Very original fragrance! But I would certainly name it differently: Blooming Orchard.

It is finally hot enough here in the northern reaches of the world to wear Eau du Ciel. This scent simply doesn’t work if it is not at least 80 degrees outside. A wonderful touch of natural linden blossom, fresh and never overpowering, the type emanating from a tree sitting in a sun warmed field. Underneath is a prominent woody note (the boxwood, I suppose) that compliments it beautifully. As it wears a bit of white flowers come out, and a hint of what I think is iris, that gives it a silky earthy feel. The linden blossom is always present though, just in varying degrees.
As usual with Annick Goutal this smells completely natural, its a simple fragrance that’s beautifully done. This lasts for 5 to 6 hours on me, with soft silage, making it perfect for a hot day.
kastalom – :
To me this scent embodies the perfect summer afternoon right after a midday shower, when the sun starts heating up the day again. It smells to me of hay, and soft woods, and dewy flowers that blend together seamlessly to create a breath of fresh air on the summer day I described above.
This scent also has surprising longevity on me, for being what I would consider a soft scent that stays fairly close to the skin, I can still catch remnants of it at the end of the day.
I was reviewing the updated Annick Goutal site and noticed this scent was no longer listed. Does anyone know if this has been officially discontinued?
VitaSinono – :
Very fresh, clean smell. It is a simple fragrance that smells very high quality, not synthetic at all, but has the signature light and airy feel that is so very AG. Reminds me of expensive french milled soap. Done in classic ‘eau de cologne’ style. Sure to please anyone who doesn’t want a perfume-y scent but wants to smell fresh. A very easy scent to wear, I can see someone spraying themselves, and then their clothes to carry the scent with them all day.
PiennaBax – :
Oh my gosh, is this ever beautiful… this to me is Loretta Young sitting at her dressing table brushing her hair before turning in early. This perfume is so prime and proper. It is nostalgic and fresh, so close to nature as it can get. The lime blossom is perfectly paired with rosewood, and the iris and violet gives it a wonderful powdery softness. I feel like I am laying on a bed of grass in a meadow full of wildflowers in the early morning breeze, when in reality I am laying on a bed of satin and velvet. I agree with the childhood memories evoked from this also, when my husband smelled it, he said it reminded him of going to his Grandmother’s house when he was young, she loved the outdoors and had beautiful flower gardens. Beautiful and nostalgic, another Annick Goutal high quality treasure…perfect scent for Spring and Summer
Sillage and longevity are decent for an Annick Goutal…

I love the fitting image Artzgirl has given of becoming part of a watercolour painting when wearing Eau du Ciel.
Eau du Ciel is my first Annick Goutal, and I will never forget it. When I tried my sample, I was surprised by a sudden influx of childhood memories and thoughts of my mom, that resurfaced again and again for hours! My mom didn’t smell like Eau du Ciel, it’s just that I find myself wishing she did. I can’t pinpoint what is so wonderfully familiar about the fragrance, and that makes it feel a bit mysterious although still fresh and innocent. One of the scents that comforts me best, I feel magically childlike in Ciel. I will wear it tomorrow, on Mother’s Day, and see if my mom likes it. 🙂 Update: She did, so I’ve decanted some of mine for her to test!
I think that the heart of Eau du Ciel is warm orange blossom and neroli. The rosewood is the most apparent note in the fragrance, to me, and its presence seems perfectly functional, allowing the orange blossom to create a unique and unusual impression. The cooling linden blossom knits these accords together. I don’t smell the violet easily but I feel its presence (I’m a violet lover and the note has an effect on my senses).
I thought Eau du Ciel had good sillage for the first three hours, not too strong but clearly detectable, and I didn’t even spray it on clothing. It was so wonderful during that time it was almost distracting – so I didn’t mind when it began to fade out at the 4 hour mark. I simply topped up with Borsari Violetta di Parma and the rest of my day was truly lovely and happy.

A little piece of Heaven on Earth!
———–
Rain from Heaven – Spring Rain…
Eau du Ciel is clean, fresh, natural, and has an ingredient list that reminds me of a spring rain on a farm. There is a gorgeous natural essence to this fragrance that I have rarely smelled in other perfumes.
Hermes Un Jardin En Mediterranee is a similar type fragrance, in that it picks up an ocean air type quality that almost gives you the experience that you are literally breathing the clean fresh air near an ocean. In the same way that Hermes captures the fresh ocean air with Un Jardin En Mediterranee… Annick Goutal captures the freshness of a spring rain on the farm. Both are beautiful expressions of natural essences that evoke immediate memories and call to mind an entire myriad of different experiences.
Eau du Ciel is truly one of my all time FAVORITE fragrances. I love the lightness and crispness of the floral… but unfortunately, this is one of those fragrances that quickly dissipates and then you smell nothing a couple of hours later. It is also becoming much more difficult to find in retail stores locally, and is very difficult to find on the internet – except through sources on ebay.
When I first bought this, I found it at Sak’s Fifth Avenue in NYC during the summers when I was in graduate school there. It brings back a lot of great memories of my experiences in NYC, but it also was like finding a hidden treasure… a part of NYC that was peaceful; a refuge from the overwhelming energy of the city and was the same type of experience that I had the day that I found the fountain room at the Frick Museum… a hidden gem in the city – that makes you feel as if you have found an oasis.
This fragrance reminds me of hummingbirds, floral gardens as they are first budding in the spring, and is so fresh and light. When I first discovered this fragrance, I had had my colors done by “Color Me Beautiful” and was told that I was a “Bright Spring”. This fragrance embodies the colors in the “Light Spring and Bright Spring” color family. When you wear this fragrance, it is as if you have merged into a soft watercolor painting.
I love it, I only wish that I could find a fragrance EXACTLY like this – that wore for 6-8 hours. If you know of anything similar to this, please personal message me.
My heart and soul crave to wear this, but I don’t like to reapply fragrances so much throughout the day.
————-
I am trying Tilleul which several people said smells very much like Eau du Ciel. So far, so good… the linden flowers are definitely in the same range as Eau du Ciel, but there is a more full bodied expression of scent with Eau du Ciel. This is truly one of those “once in a lifetime” type fragrances. I simply LOVE Eau du Ciel! I just wish that it wore longer on my skin than a couple of hours!
Rare Pearls is also showing up as a fragrance that is similar to this… and in response to that, I have worn both – and find that Eau du Ciel is much more “natural smelling” and wears with a brighter, cleaner essence – than the Rare Pearls. They are similar in chords… both have a complexity of notes that make them floral and appealing, in completely different ways. You can read my review on Rare Pearls and you will notice the differences. I would not have immediately associated the smell of Eau du Ciel with Rare Pearls – because Rare Pearls wears with much more of a “chemical type composition”. You notice more of a chemical mix with Rare Pearls – than with Eau du Ciel which smells exactly as if you had captured a moment after a spring rain on a farm.

Love it! It makes me feel feminine, fresh and clean all day. I always get a lot of compliments when wearing this scent. Last time I wanted to order it from Annik Goutals homepage it wasn´t there so please
BUY so it doesn´t dissapear for good 🙂
bams23 – :
Incredibly lovely. Reminds me of one of those slow-motion videos of a flower opening. This is actually a little too floral for me personally. Lasting power and sillage were much better than most Annick Goutals.
Scediecorse – :
Eau du Ciel is oh so belle!
What a magnificent and fragrant linden perfume! It’s light, fresh, and clean, like honey water. I had been wanting to test this for many years, but I could never find a tester in any of the stores. Finally, a generous member gifted me with a decant. I am so lucky!
I was raised Catholic, and this perfume reminds me of some of the words to one of the songs we often sang in church:
What a wonderous time is Spring
when all the trees are budding
The birds begin to sing
The flowers start their blooming
I think those words capture Eau du Ciel better than anything I can come up with.
I’ve used to own and love French Lime Blossom by Jo Malone, but now I prefer Eau du Ciel.
zanozof – :
Cannot believe how much this perfume ressembles linden blossom I love it:)) !!! Finally a nice Linden scent that is also longlasting, proud owner of my new bottle, yupiiiiiiii!!
i335 – :
It was a perfect September day. The bride carried orchids and wore satin and Eau du Ciel. That bride was me, and although EdC isn’t your typical wedding day perfume despite the fact that it contains orange blossom, I loved it so much at the time that I simply couldn’t get married in anything else. The most prominent note is linden (lime) blossom, and I recently discovered (Thanks Fragrantica!) that the lime tree is the lovers’ tree in some mythologies, so maybe it wasn’t such a weird choice after all.
Though no longer my favorite perfume, Eau du Ciel will always have beautiful memories associated with it for me. It is innocent and fresh and perfect for new beginnings.
Ternovnik – :
Water from Heaven indeed…this perfume is amazing! When I uncapped and sniffed the juice in my vial for the first time I thought: “Wow! What a scent”. It was powdery and almost vintage in it’s smell (looking now, I see it WAS released in 1986). I had imagined it would be a sillage monster, but on skin it is a lovely almost angelic floral scent with just enough greens and an almost “misty” feel to it…
*Thanks Weegee for sharing some of this divinity with me*
This begins with an almost demure linden blossom (read citrusy, green floral) and clean rosewood beauty. Dry and woody, while being absolutely floral and fresh, no overly sweet rich nectar-oozing flowers here…just simple springtime airy blossoms waving cheerfully. NEVER have I smelled such a difference in a perfume from the bottle to my skin. THIS is somewhere between a nymph and a full-blown goddess! Annick’s creations are simply amazing. Soft violets (leaves and all) cascade all around you, tickling your skin, as softly they are whispering: “play with us!”. Neroli and iris walk hand-in-hand, neither stronger than the other; both soft and silky, and perfectly balanced. So warm, yet airy; EdC gives new meaning to a “floral” scent. This should have it’s own category (or at least start one) like ethereal floral, or vernal floral bouquet. This, to me, is the scent after a light spring rain on newly blooming flowers of different types as the sun comes out, and it is all carried on the wind. As it blows softly all around you, it makes you stop (quite literally) and smell the flowers. To not do so would be to thumb your nose at Mother Nature herself!
Sillage: good
Longevity: average
Overall: 4/5
Many people (from reviews that I have read) complain AG’s perfumes do not last or project all that well. Springtime florals do not last forever either, but while they bloom; they are truly a gift from Heaven. Thanks Annick, for this lovely gift of springtime itself, in a bottle. And thank you also, to the ‘Powers That Be’ for the gift of THESE flowers each and every year. Occasionally we all take a bit of “poetic license”, here and there, in our reviews; but right now with this on my wrist and the spring wind coming in the open window…I cannot tell where one stops, and the other begins! A must have for the serious flower loving parfumista…

My favourite annick goutal perfume. It is getting difficult to find.I can smell the liden tree and the violets. It reminds me of my childhood,I don´t know why especially the holidays by the sea side going for walks with my grandmother. I use it for hot summer nights out with a dress and flats.Romantic and nostalgic.

(This review is for Eau de Toilette)
EAU DU CIEL is a clean, fresh and airy fragrance. I agree with other reviewers that it is mostly about orange blossom. The fragrance is clear and light on my skin. It reminds me of a summer morning in the country. I can wear this scent while drinking tea on the terrace and enjoying the morning sunshine. It smells more like a nature than a perfume.
I love linden scent. In EAU DU CIEL, the linden flowers are lightly sweet and fresh. I agree with Cereza’s opinion in the review below that the linden blossoms are not blossoming to its full potential in this scent. However, the opening still remains my favorite part of the fragrance with its shy linden flowers. It reminds me of the fresh wind on the summer morning. The fragrance continues to develop towards the orange blossom heart. I do not get violets at all. I find the heart notes a bit boring. I think the fragrance loses its translucent quality of a summer wind at this point and becomes more ordinary. The dry down notes continues on the trajectory of neroli – orange blossom. It is pleasant but not as captivating to me as the opening notes. I also get a bit of a sour note that Cereza also mentioned in her review.
I admire how natural EAU DU CIEL smells. I do love the opening notes of this fragrance and I wish they would last longer. As usual with niche perfumes I would like to suggest trying a sample before buying.
anubis300 – :
I was sure that I will enjoy Eau du Ciel, because my first encounter with linden blossoms where in Eau de Noho by Bond no9 and I simply loved it, so I was expecting something really special from Eau du Ciel as well. And here my beloved violet is present as well.
So, the problem with me is that I get TONS of orange blossom. I can’t say which, but one if the notes + orange blossom makes a really sour and weird feeling. Violet is not present for my nose. Or blended with orange blossom makes that weird stuff on my wrist. And now about my beloved linden…it is here, a lot, but I just don’t get it. In Eau de Noho it wasn’t just the sweetness, it was the sun, pureness, comfort captured in that note, but in Eau du Ciel it’s just the honey-like sweetness that makes the orange-blossom freshness fuss even more unlikeable.
Eh…I was expecting so much more!
reabbipse – :
I happily wore this in my mid 20’s in the 90’s. On my skin, this was an airy, powdery scent, with a crisp freshness of leaves and petals. I really liked this scent, bought it twice! I was all about Annick Goutal at the time.
Jekan – :
This scent is primarily orange blossom on me, with a slightly pungent green dimension, mostly in the top notes-
Eau de Ciel has considerably more presence than many of the other niche fragrances that I’ve tried, which is a definite plus! ( .5 ml has lasted 7 hours, and is still going strong!)
My favorite AG so far…
Zaq – :
Eau du Ciel is an intensely nostalgic scent. It smells like the countryside in spring after a sun shower: warm, wet hay; evaporating puddles; tiny violets; grass and a hint of dirt. It’s gentle and unsophisticated, but true to the moment that created it, revealing a delicate and youthful sincerity. This isn’t the type of fragrance a person wears to impress anyone, or to receive compliments, or to feel sophisticated. It’s the type of fragrance that touches your soul because it has a soul of its own. Annick Goutal must have been a genius because she captured nature, spring and childhood in a bottle. There are thousands of perfumes available to purchase, but only a handful are truly works of art. I can only hope that I’ll always be fortunate enough to own a bottle, and the passport to pure, pastoral innocence that it cradles inside.
vovchik35rus – :
I received my 3.4 oz spray bottle of this today and what a luxury! On my skin the fragrance is lovely and indeed like the waters of heaven. I can smell the citrus and the wood. It lasts 4 or 5 hours on me, which is good. It is almost gone on e-bay and I hope this does not mean it is gone for good. I feel very fortunate to have been able to purchase a bottle. Hey, I see it is offered on Perfume Emporium!
natali1256 – :
I received a sample bottle from LuckyScent and now know what all the excitement is about. This developes in the most lovely and gorgeous way after being applied to the skin. It is a wonderful experience to smell as it evolves from wet through dry down and several hours after. The florals and rosewood are perfect in this combination. I will definitely buy a large bottle of this. It is a treasure.
updailymac – :
This is beautiful, although probably not for everyone!
It certainly has something very “Annick Goutal” in it… an airy green crispness ; the lack of any artificial sweetness, or complicated flavor.
It starts nice and strong, as a perfumey version of a blooming linden tree, nice silage that only last, at the most, 1 hour. After that it continues, in the form of a linden tree blossom soap. The dry down is clean soap, smelling also like tea made out of linden flowers.
Overall, lovely. If I could change the end soapiness into a more sweet, woody base, it would be indeed heavenly; even so, it’s a simple natural, innocent, ageless, peaceful beauty; it feels like it belongs to another era. Pure, angelic, sunny.
pytch – :
Saying Eau du Ciel is a floral is like saying a diamond is just another clear rock!
EduC is unlike any floral I’ve ever encountered. The linden, violets and rosewood combine to become another botanical species entirely, or some hitherto unknown herb, even bordering on an incense note while still managing to be both light and airy – even beachy, as chance 25 says.
On my skin, liberally applied (2 sprays on my hair, 2 on neck front & back, ankles and forearms!) the sillage is both lasting (6-8 hours) and awesome! Linden blossom, fresh-cut grass in a meadow, deep purple violets, a hint of lily of the valley… freshness. This is a warm & hot weather scent that evokes the dusky light just after sunset as the fireflies rise before full dark. I’m entralled by the beauty of EduC, truly. Freshness in a bottle: inhale deeply and sigh as a small smile raises the corners of your mouth.
Рузмет – :
This has to be the most charming perfume I own. It smells like an older d/c shampoo from the seventies. The iris and rosewood are present and smell almost beachy w/out the saltiness of the beach. The violet is what keeps this sweet and the lime(although I can’t smell it)adds a layer of citrus that AG perfumes always seem to have. Mossy and dewy is how it presents itself. Silage maybe 1-3 hrs, so another application is needed sometime thru out the day.
