Description

Eau de Parfum de George Sand was introduced as limited edition, created in cooperation with the perfumer Jean-Francois Laporte. It opens with shining lemon notes and sweet and fresh bergamot, followed by the heart of patchouli, rose and amber, and drying down to the base of musk and sandalwood. This is the first perfume from the collection dedicated to remarkable and influential French people, who marked the 19th century with their high class scandals. The first fragrance from the collection Les Parfums Historiques is dedicated to George Sand Nikolas DeBarry.

In short: A wonderful take on the popular rose-patchouli combo. It reminds me of Prada Amber with a dash of citrus plus an added dry waxy rose, (potpurri comes to my mind). Suits it’s idea of Geroge Sand very well. I like it.

What a wonderful creation! I managed to find an almost full bottle on eBay. You only need the tiniest bit, as this is one HUGE fragrance. Imagine vintage Cinnabar’s older more experienced and slightly naughtier sister. Lots of patchouli and amber which mellows into a beautiful soft fragrance with no edges. I am in heaven!

I’m an amber and patchouli fiend and I expected to be absolutely mad for this based on the accords, but I’m sorry to say it’s not a thrill for me. The amber is quite strong and reminds me very much of Laura Mercier’s Ambre Passion, which sort of didn’t work for me, either. Sillage and longevity are nice and solid, and the perfume seems to be of a very fine quality. I couldn’t smell the patchouli at all– just the amber, and in a much sweeter fashion than I prefer with amber. It is lovely and I would enjoy smelling it on someone else, but not for myself.
Perhaps I’d feel differently if I smelled this on the divine Judy Davis who played George Sand in the film Impromptu? I’m glad I have a decant of this, and I will try again in another season and see if that changes my view, because I really WANT to like this.

Spices like cloves and maybe cinnamon are clearly missing from the perfume pyramid. At first this smells strikingly similar to my signature scent, Or Noir, by Pascal Morabito. George Sand is sweeter and lacks the “motor oil” opening of Or Noir. The spiciness also reminds me of Opium.
George Sand is a full-bodied, old-fashioned fragrance reminiscent of the likes of Mitsouko or L’Air du Temps. Amber, spice, dried flower petals, and dusty patchouli mingle effortlessly to create a fragrance befitting for a duchess at a ball–a sinister duchess in a dark, damp, medieval castle. There is a fairytale quality to this fragrance, but it’s no Cinderella perfume. It’s a perfume for the Maleficents, Evil Step-Mothers, and Cruella De Vils of the world.

I tested this before I read harlequin1572’s review. I guess I must be one of those “I am woman, hear me roar.” type of folks, then. This perfume ensnares me, enraptures me……it IS me, only better smelling! J’adore.
I immediately tried to buy it as soon as it hit my skin. Alas it was no longer for sale…anywhere. But, luck smiled, I happened upon a private source, and bought all that he had – 40ml. I am NOT going to hoard this one. I shall wear with abandon as often as I like. Fortunately, this is very potent and one dab will do you.
I am not educated enough yet to discuss notes. My source did call this a “wonderful chypre” and although that’s not how it is classified here, his description may add to review reader’s understanding of this WOW juice.

If you’re familiar with the character of George Sand you’ll probably realize that this composition by JF Laporte is a real homage to an unconventional lady, responsible of memorable novels as well as being one of the first women to fight for women’s rights. Uncompromising yet classic, resolute yet romantic and absolutely unforgettable. And that’s exactly how this perfume smells.
A dark opening with a threatening patchouli note joined by rose and contrasted by a strident – yet barely perceptible – bitter citrus. Scary, mysterious but absolutely compelling and somehow familiar. It quickly turns to a very classic sandalwood / patchouli / musk drydown of rare perfection. An incredibly solid composition that’s classic in the structure but masterfully orchestrated to perfectly pay homage to one of the most controverisal writer/personality of the ‘800.

Chopin is soundtrack to my childhood. I don’t exactly know why, it might be the ballet classes, my hair in a tight bun, pointe shoes and the incredible bliss and desperation of being 6 that make me remember that time with Chopin playing in the back of my mind(useful note: I’m married to a classical composer).
I don’t understand or know how the olfactory notes of George Sand perfume have this organic tie to Chopin playing in the background of my childhood – surely it must be a trick my mind is playing – but I love this fragrance as I love my childhood. It is everything I want to remember from that time. My aunt used to have this coffret of Opium, I loved smelling not the bottle but the coffret itself, this one reminds me of that exact smell. I have also found that smelling the boxes of Niki de Saint Phalle and Miss Dior and Byzance gave that same feeling of transport back in time.
Is this a helpful review of a fragrance who wants to know about this perfume? Probably not. But if you love all things old world, you will like George Sand somehow.

If that was like Goeirge Sand smelled like, no wonder she became an inspiration for the most talented and acclaimed Polish pianist and composer…
This is a fragrance that tells a story. And when you sniff your wrist, you see it all: heavy curtains, old cabinets, dusty books, you can hear squeaking floor in Chopin’s appartment (well, to be honest I dont know if the floor in his appartment was indeed squeaking, but somehow it seems appropriate and indispensable), and gentle sounds of piano coming from the next room.
It makes me think of so many things at onse that it is hard to describe. I love it, although I am hesistant about wearing it. I am not a patchouli-lover, and here with the rose and lemon it creates a powerful aura, that somehow seems more appropriate for a grand opera outing rather than a casual stroll in the park or meeting with friends. It is heavy and intoxitating, powdery, and it has this vintage feeling to it.
There might be time in my life where I will be able to wear it on a daily basis, it might be a bit too early.

I truly admire the woman to whom this uncompromising and unabashed statement in perfume form belongs.
My relationship with this perfume is not unlike the one that was between Chopin and Sand. I can only wear the delicate, wispy and frankly fragile scents – adjectives often used to describe Chopin’s character and, unfortunately, his health. His music contained more life than his body ever did. By contrast, his almost life-long partner Sand was a force to be reckoned with, at once inspiring (amber), menacing (patchouli), and yet caring for those most dear to her (rose), having for many years sustained Chopin in his ever-low state of health.
But most noticeable is the sheer force of this power potion, for just as Sand did not stay by Chopin’s side until his death, despite her promise to do so, so does the strength and concentration of this perfume scream, Let this be a warning to the world: I am my own woman and I alone decide my fate!
A daring and thoroughly dangerous creation, this perfume is a litmus test of your character, and you cannot either like it or dislike it – it is either you, or it crushes you. So if you don’t already know who you are, and are not yet prepared to find out, let this elixir of truth stay untested until the time when you are ready.

V.S. Pritchett called George Sand a ‘thinking bosom that overpowered her young lovers.’ With that in mind, I spritzed her namesake on my own bosom and went about my day looking for young, impressionable men. (none were to be found)
The notes here should be unsurprising. I read that Sandalwood is similar to the human pheromone alpha androsterone, and is considered an aphrodisiac. The same for Patchouli, which is used as an anointing oil in Tantric sexual rituals. Bergamot is second to lavendar in its ability to relax brain waves, and rose also acts to calm nervous tension.
Whew. With all that going on, just what sort of life did this woman lead? Who cares. I like the scent. I can’t give an unbiased review because these are my favorites notes, and here they are mixed scandalously well.
It does open with the middle act, or, I don’t detect a citrus opening. You can tell its there, though, because the heavy woody base has an edgy, sharp spin to it. This is going on my bosom’s ‘consider buying’ list (and why not?)

So Warm and Sexy. Reminds me of something I have smelled before (Opium or Obsession maybe) but much better.
I can wear this and feel sultry. Nice Patchouli and Sandalwood mix. Deep but not heavy, this won’t get alot of heads turning but it will be comfortable and you will love it on your skin.

I was intrigued to try this, being an admirer not just of the works of George Sand, but also of her fearless lust for life. This fragrance contains both light and dark; it starts with a citrus sheerness, like curtains opened to the sun in a dark, wood-filled manor. The richness of the patchouli is nearly constant throughout. There is a whisper of rose in the background but nothing too forward. This is a close, seductive scent that could be worn by either sex, which honors Sand, as she was known to entertain both ladies and gentleman. Would George have worn this? We won’t ever know, but I can imagine this wafting off of her portrait, her eyes daring you to lean in for a closer sniff.
