The scent of Impériale is pure joy. No, it doesn’t last very long, but by spritzing repeatedly, we can prolong happiness.
acrocapaclesk – :
In 1853, Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain composed Eau de Cologne Impériale for Her Majesty Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. As I read it was used as an air freshener when her majesty felt dizzy and needed to feel something fresh in the air, so it wasn´t used as a perfume as we know it. So this is the reason why it doesn´t have the longevity on skin because it was not the purpose of this scent. You just wanted to feel it in the room were you had to stay. And I try to use it this way, to apply it in the air and then breathe it and enjoy it in my bedroom or livingroom and some of it stays with me in my hair or clothes and I can feel it when I move around the house. When you use it as a regular perfume you will be disappointed.

This is a nice citrussy Cologne. Very elegant. But I wonder how could one use this as a fragrance. When applied in « normal » conditions, it lasts minutes on me. I currently use it as a refresher after the gym. I don’t know if it’s the body chemistry after the effort but it lasts even less… But I don’t mind, it does the job. I really advise sampling before buying or performance issues might make you angry.

If “the world will be a better place” had a scent, it would be Eau de Cologne Impériale. Ephemeral like sillage of perfume of a passenger that lingers in your nose for a while, nevertheless, this potion of purifying disturbs you encrusted ordinary and shifts your mood to the highest level. It’s like sitting on moon and watching earth and enjoy the tranquility, regardless to human decline out there.

One of my preferred classic citrus scents, and i love the bottle. In fact, i have been thinking of buying a fabulous hand-painted bottle with gilded bees, because i will always have this perfume, so a permanent flask is good. A definite spritzer type scent, best in warm weather.

So many reviews to do, so little time. It’s tragic that I’ve only just gotten around to pen my thoughts about this stuff. I don’t know whether I’m just having a Eau de cologne renaissance but I really am in love with this kind of fragrance at the moment and it’s not even the weather for it. Maybe that’s the beauty of this sort of classic perfume…it’s versatile and timeless. In any case my respect for Guerlain couldn’t be higher and this really is a gem, despite the obvious comparisons with a million other similar fragrances. The opening is like a cool breeze of luscious, bright citruses and lemon verbena which often gives a little fizz to proceedings and although in broad terms, not a long lived perfume, the citrus does last throughout. This might be due to how Cologne Imperiale, superbly transitions into white florals but they are very light and delicate. The drydown has a hint of creaminess like a woody vanilla but so subtle and barely registering as such. It’s brilliant! I really like it. This type of perfume can be quite boring but this has something about it an air of class and robust heritage. I have tried it through the years and this latest formula doesn’t seem to have lost anything. I didn’t expect decent performance and as such was pleasantly surprised when the longevity was okay, low lying but perfectly acceptable.

This is so nice. Construct. A little bitterness for bite. Clean. Refreshing. Makes me feel good. Does not last long so extremely sprinting is needed.
kmuraviev – :
so beautiful, and compared to eau du coq, it is much weaker. imperiale is very refreshing, elegant bitter and grassy notes like quality green tea, plus bergamot oil ;-). Even the taste – just put one drop on your tongue – is gorgeous! this ultimate quality test pass only a few scents. Yes, it’s a pity that it does not last long as it us supposed to a cologne to vanished after a few minutes. But imagine an extrait…
For those who like the bitter notes, try 4711 Acqua Colonia Royal Riesling: lacks the lime but offers nice bergamot and herbal notes and is still refreshing.

For some reason, on me, it smells like expensive fruit loops. I’ve received a compliment on it, however, it’s very light and doesn’t last very long!

Eau de Cologne Imperiale is one of the first celebrity perfumes, dating back to 1853 when French house Guerlain made its first steps on a path that will through decades and centuries become the synonym of refinement and good taste both in high perfumery and cosmetics. Guerlain was founded by Pierre Francois Pascal Guerlain in 1828 and since then, the world has been richer by some 800 perfume creations that lived their lives to the fullest in women’s boudoirs all over the world. For many Parisians, buying their first Guerlain perfume is an intimate, a bit timid but also an exciting moment of becoming an adult. As if by putting on the perfume, our personality begins to evolve, our dreams and yearnings emanate around us, changing with every wave of the chosen perfume. The key of Guerlain lies in Guerlinade, an all present chord that embodies jasmine, rose, vanilla, tonka and many other ingredients carefully hidden from the eye of the public and jealous competition.
Legend has it that Eau de Cologne Imperiale was made by Pierre Guerlain for Napoleon’s wife Eugenie de Montijo. Her majesty suffered intolerable migraines and since Pierre was already famous for his Eaux de Cologne, light citrusy aromatic colognes that freshened up and made early 19th-century Parisiens’ body and soul light, she decided to find a solution for her problem in bespoke perfume, custom made by maestro Guerlain. Eau de Cologne Imperiale surpassed its predecessors, Eau de Cologne Superieure, Eau de Cologne Royale, won the emperess heart and like a storm took over Europe and brought Pierre the title of “her majestie’s official perfumist.”
Eau de Cologne Imperial is refreshing, some would say the even soothing mixture of bergamot, lemon, orange, lavender, rosemary and tonka. The bottle, the famous bee bottle that is now Guerlain’s trademark, was made by virtue Pochet & Du Corval who, in order to give royal motives to the bottle, turned into glass Napoleon the Third’s favorite symbol – the top of Vendome column encrusted with gold bees. In order to satisfy the taste of both Napoleon and Eugenie, the bottle had to embody the luxury of ancient Rome and the symbols of Meroving dynasty. When he accomplished that, nothing was standing in the way of young perfumist Pierre Francois Pascal Guerlain in his quest to conquer the world. And he did that silently and unnoticeable, not by conquering their bodies but more importantly, their hearts.

I”ve already written a review of this (it’s somewhere way down below) but 5 years later I’d like to reiterate: Out of all the fragrances I own, this is the only one that I just pick up, close my eyes, and go crazy with the trigger. I douse myself in this, and it’s like dousing yourself in a super light mist of the freshest lemonade imaginable. And even after 15 or 20 good sprays all over, it never smells too strong and always smells just right. It refreshes me, picks me up, and lasts for all of a half hour. A few hours later, I’m ready to do it again. That’s what I love about this stuff–just the fact that I can have a blast spraying it like a maniac and it will still smell light and fresh and appealing to anybody around me. This is how it’s meant to be used. So do yourself a favor this summer: Get a bottle, go nuts with it, and never once worry about its longevity or the possibility of overdoing it. Unisex for all citrus lovers and Guerlain fanatics on the planet. Thumbs up!
ki-mi – :
A very refreshing spritz for a hot day, and it fooled the passing bees! – excellent ingredients evidently. You can layer with JMF shower gel or soap for a longer lasting citrus. With the lime flower in it, it’s slightly sweeter than JMF and the neroli is very fine. A great blend, totally unisex and everything a cologne should be. In hot weather it forms a pleasant citrus musk on the skin which is very Guerlain. Nice.x
byblichek – :
This is one EDC with a legitimate claim to history. From the sparkling citrus and neroli opening to the gentle herbal drydown, even the timeless Napoleonic “honeybee” decanter pays homage to the bygone age of these refreshing summertime “lotions”.
Anyone who says “for women” or “for men” with fragrances is sort of missing the point, especially with these classical aromatic eaus. Compared to the ubiquitous 4711, you really get a sense of quality and value from Imperiale. It’s not as cheap, but the quality of ingredients and final product are proportionately superior.
That being said, I do not think this is the best possible EDC! Many modern interpretations exist which are more versatile and long lasting. However, EDCI still commands respect as the great- grandfather of the fragrance world.
7.5/10 overall, weak sillage and longevity.
jamal-07 – :
As many reviews have noted, this is very much a unisex fragrance.
I’ve tried as hard as I can to love this EDC, given my love for EDCs in general, but the best I could muster is a like for Imperiale. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good fragrance, but not great in my books.
The open is a lovely blast of citruses, lemon verbena, and neroli. The holy trinity of a good EDC, if you ask me. An absolute stunner of an opener, without a doubt.
The rosemary then slowly comes in, followed shortly by the tonka and cedar which sustain through the drydown. And I think this is where it starts to go south for me. The tonka in there makes this evolve into a different fragrance, almost powdery, and that doesn’t do it for me. It doesn’t seem to work with the citrus and rosemary. A vetiver or oakmoss note would have worked much better, in my opinion.
A nice, pleasant fragrance that I sometimes wear – but by no means the best EDC out there. Which is a shame, because it has the makings of one.
Like most EDC’s, don’t expect much longevity and sillage. I get around an hour on my skin, all of which is a skin scent.
lcs345bedyWelty – :
The best in my collection. The bottle and the fragrance are gorgeous. The fragrance is a very light and refreshing Eau de Cologne, perfect for the summer months, but is definitely a year-round fragrance. Will not last long in colder weather. Being an Eau de Cologne, this is not meant to last very long, an hour at most, without much projection. Can be used by men and women, this is clearly a unisex fragrance. Lemon Verbena open up this Guerlain masterpiece, followed by a very light touch of lavender and a hint of orange blossom. Sophisticated. Can be used for special occasions. I own several sizes of the fragrance. Guerlain has the normal 3.4 oz bottle, which is a sprayer. Guerlain also has the larger decanter bottles which are beautiful. These come in 8.4 oz, 17 oz, and 33 oz. (1 liter). The liter bottle is the largest and is very impressive. This fragrance can be used every day. It can be layered with the perfume you will be wearing without clashing. I personally wear this layered with the original Christian Dior Eau Sauvage, which gives Imperiale some longevity. You can also wear Imperiale on it’s own, which is perfectly fine. If you really like this one, you can wear it on it’s own. Overall a beaufiful fragrance, recommended.

I had tried and really liked the current formulation, but did not need that much juice, so I hesitated purchasing. About a week ago, I found one of the older 30 ml bottles that were made in the Louis the XVI style bottle (mine was sealed and in a zebra box, so likely from the 80’s, though possibly later).
I really LOVE the scent now! It seems brighter (if that could be possible) and the lavender is less heavy (at least that is my impression). Longevity is still an “issue” but as it was never meant to last, I don’t really consider it a factor. Projection is minimal, making it a rather personal or intimate scent, perfect to enjoy for the sake of its pleasure, or for the sultriest of summer days.

Have I got a bad bottle ?
This smells terrible to me.
Piercingly sharp and bitter.
I can’t imagine anyone wearing this.
Eau du Coq is beautiful by contrast, containing sweet orange to balance it out.
This is like medicine on me !

I don’t understand why this is listed as for women only. It’s listed on Guerlain’s own site as unisex. This is probably my favorite perfume. Just a wonderful, refreshing, light citrus/lavender/floral blast you can enjoy getting ready in the morning … sad thing is the scent is gone by the time you get to work. I feel like it’s kind of the ultimate luxury because the wearer is the only one who gets to enjoy it. I’ve had two bottles, but unlike the Emperor, I don’t think I can afford to keep buying it for the 15-30 min of fun. I’ve ordered a bottle of 4711 to see if I can accomplish the same thing more cheaply.
Edit: I tried 4711. I’d say they’re very close, 85% similar, Imperiale has more lavender, while 4711 was more floral. Overall, Imperiale seems higher quality – a little more creamy/powdery while 4711 seems more bright or medicinal. Didn’t get any more longevity out of 4711.
PoKS – :
To the casual fan of Guerlain’s oriental masterpieces, it may come as a surprise that the house became famous in France and beyond on the back of this fleeting citrus cologne. Dig a little deeper, however, and it becomes apparent that Eau de Cologne Imperiale was the first link in the Guerlinade DNA. Its pairing of citrus with Provencal herbs and tonka appears time and time again in Guerlain’s classics, from Jicky to Shalimar and beyond. Those perfumes added vanilla and resins into the herbal-citrus mix, and the rest was history.
As an Eau de Cologne, Imperiale is fairly typical of its era. Comparsions to 4711 are apt. But the old adage “you get what you pay for” applies here – while 4711 can feel cheap like a kitchen cleaner, the natural quality of Imperiale is obvious. It’s a refreshing blast of citrus and herbs that is perfect for a hot day, or a convalescent afternoon in bed. Indeed, my partner always asks for “Napoleon’s wife’s perfume” whenever she is ill with a cold or headache. It’s nice to know that in today’s world of pharmaceuticals and herbal quackery, Imperiale still serves its original purpose.
Some may complain that, for its price, Imperiale is too fleeting. That is exactly the point. It is a cologne to be spritzed when one feels the need, not a scent to be worn all day long. And therein lies its strength – one can wear another perfume and still apply a refreshing spritz or two of Imperiale, confident that the latter will fade away before the two fragrances clash. I carry a bottle with me wherever I go, and it’s always a pleasure to reinvigorate myself with a spray whenever the feeling takes me.
Imperiale is an iconic fresh scent with real history. It is shimmering, revitalising and, ultimately, wonderful for the soul. A must for Guerlain fans and other humans alike.

I bought it at a car boot sale yesterday for £8. Seller insisted it was men’s cologne and let me test it on my skin. I sprayed it slightly (hate to test items that are for sale!), detected fresh lemon, checked all lebels. £8 for a 100 ml tester bottle of Guerlain is a good price, isn’t it?
i tested it again in the evening and in the morning next day. I find this lemon too sharp, nearly like in cleaning detergents. And quite bitter lemon’s peel. And some bergamot, like in a good tea is here too.
I am not convinced, but it has soo good reviews here that I will wait for the summer with it.
It doesn’t stay long but it’s quite normal for citrusy refreshing fragrances. And it’s cologne after all:)
KREC_fuse – :
Very refreshing, very high quality sparkling citrus, literally feels like a spray of cold water in hot weather. The sillage and longevity aren’t good, but it is a cologne. I bumped up the effect by layering with JMF Extra-Vieille shower cream, as the two scents are similar, and reapplying a few times. Ideal for summer, but longer lasting in cooler weather! Xx
liv52 – :
This was one of my first fresh fragrances, then I didn’t have it for a long time and missed it. I have many great fresh, citrus, and aquatics. But just the scent of Imperial, is so clean, green, and fresh. It is outstanding, comfortable, wearable, soothing. It was used by Napoleon’s wife to sooth her headaches.
The fragrance 4711 is allso one of the very best citrus fresh Scents, but longevity is very poor. Imperial also only has limited longevity, but much longer than 4711.
I use them as an aftershave, or before sleep or when I wake at night.
The scent alone is comparable to Creed M Imperial, or Tom Ford Neroli Portafino, just the silage and longevity are much better with those two.
Rating: 9/10
God bless you. John 3:16
Zettcu – :
The green herbal quality to this scent gives it a very strong fresh quality that seemingly operates differently than modern fresh scents.
This freshness is crucial to the use of this scent, historically and today. It was designed to refresh a person and knock back an oncoming headache, rather than act as an enduring scent-track to your day, and the longevity really prevents it from being used differently. As a freshener, this scent can be used by a scent lover in a conservative environment without too much worry that you are going to regret using the scent in some situation later in the day.
This scent is held to be a female scent, but I can think of no example of a scent that is less risky for a man to wear outside of its gendered claim. The one link to gender that is worth noting for a man is favorable, in that this scent does not overly emphasize notes stereotypical held to be masculine to the point that perceived masculine posturing, by simply wearing the scent, will offend those near you. This scent is thus unisex, but it seems traditional enough that any whiff of metro-sexual posturing is dispelled; you leave an impression that you are groomed, not a preening modernist looking down on everyone.
zyldjin – :
In my humble opinion, this cologne is especially soothing and wonderful (because I can’t think of any other way to describe it) on days when you don’t have time to take a bath/shower, so you spray this on liberally (all over). Not only is it instantly refreshing and a nice “pick me up” for the senses, but it seems to last a bit longer and the elements like the rosemary and the moss (or is it basil???) are more easily detectable alongside the delightful citrus. So if you have days where you don’t have the time or luxury to bathe every day (perhaps caring for a newborn or an ailing parent, or you’re on vacation, etc.)spray this on freely and it will mingle so happily with you!
Green Arrow – :
A lovely fresh cologne, classic and timeless, it is as happy and cheerful and fresh now as it was a 100 years ago, how reassuring to wear and enjoy.
It is a cologne so we can accept that this only last a few hours.
Most definitely unisex, or at least I feel comfortable wearing this.
overall this gets a 8/10 as a cologne!
Myncunwinia – :
This one smells like grass and lemon for less than 2 hours and then poof! It’s gone. A 2 note wonder for me, and disappointing.
a.wiens79 – :
I just put it on a minute ago and I’m in citrus heaven. At the time of the purchase, I was interested to try out some ‘unisex’ cologne, I bought a few and right now, I’m thinking I’m probably done with buying new EDC, and I will probably keep this and 4711 in my collection forever. I also bought Eau de Guerlain around the same time, this one wins by far for my personal taste, I’m still a newbie so I believe this ones is easier for anyone to get into if you consider yourself new to the world of EDC. Oh, man, I own this classic looking bottle, it’s like half full so this is so precious to me, I don’t use it often. I knew this was short lasting but I just feel that it is fading so fast, despite that, I’m in love. 1964-1977, my bottle has a screw spray cap, so y’know I don’t know the history or how this had been stored, why does this smell still so gorgeous?
Lemon Verbena. I want to pursue this note, by reading reviews by others(females) and I’d like to find something similar someday. My impression is that this is maybe a true EDC? I mean the longevity and the proper use is like, you’re not meant to wear it to go out, I don’t know what I’m saying, let’s just say despite the longevity, this beautiful scent and its history will always have a place in my heart.
I’d like to add another impression as of this moment, I’d hesitate to say “Hey, this is a unisex cologne.” Someone did the research for us and on the official website, it is ‘Les Eau’. I’d like to just leave it at that. As a single man, I can think to myself that maybe someday, I’d meet someone special who can share this beautiful bottle, without even saying words, she/he can just grab this and use as much as the person wants, let me emphasize that I pick it up for myself and that special someone.
This bottle I own is the only times that I have tried this scent and recently, I have found that there’s a Guerlain outlet not so far away, when I was there for the first time a week ago, I couldn’t contain the excitement, I’m sure they had some eau, but I didn’t get the chance to test them out. I’ll try to remember to make the list, I won’t be buying there though, I can’t afford the retail price, so when I get some extra spending money, I’ll consider another bottle for myself.
Guess I have praised this enough? Mine smells simple, yet special, oh yes, I raised my arm and got the whiff of it. It’s still going, who needs a girlfriend? Thanks for reading!

The pale yellow morning sun shone into my friend´s kitchen in her century old wooden mountain home in the coastal highlands of Jamaica. Blazton, the gardenerman had picked a scandal bag full of green oranges and bumpy lemons from the old grey barked trees, casting shade on the lovely old home. Towel haired and fresh from my rainwater captured shower, I got out the old cedar cutting board and began slicing and then squeezing the citrus. Opening the window, I felt the cool morning breeze coming down from the highlands laden with blossoms of lime and ortanique. So happy and so fresh.

The smell of History. This was ahead of its time. Nice citrus notes! The bottle looks good in my collection but I was hoping for so much more.

This is my go to fragrance literally for when you feel boiling hot and need a quick refreshing spritz. I’ve just got in from foraging with my husband and we are hot, sticky and frankly a bit sweaty. Not pleasant I know! But after a quick overall spritz for both of us, we feel clean and cool again. I use it post workout too, it is lovely, with a bright citrus and hint of clean woods underneath. Not sharp but still refreshing.
But… It lasts about half and hour at best and it is definitely a skin scent. Whilst I got this bottle for a song, there’s no way I’d get another bottle at full price!! Colognes I’m sure are great but in England there isn’t much call for them and if I’m honest, they don’t smell that wildly different to me.
Not bad but don’t expect miracles.
Ewgen69 – :
I can’t say much about EDC Imperiale that others haven’t said already – except to recommend layering it with almost literally any other Guerlain fragrance. I use Imperiale to freshen something I’m already wearing, while adding a subtle dryness. Shalimar, Mitsouko, Vetiver and Habit Rouge all smell terrific with a spritz of Imperiale on top…hardly surprising, as Imperiale is already in the DNA of all of those fragrances.
OLD2 – :
This was going to be my “it” citrus, really one of the best. I had no doubt they used it for royalty to ease migraine; it brightens my mood and relaxes me at the same time (Something I’d put on before bed AND when I wake up).. Too bad it works like a “body mist”
Mriya – :
Imperiale smells artificial on me, as does 4711. I bought them both without testing first, as they sounded so similar to one of my favorites, Cologne, by Thierry Mugler. I was looking for a deal on Cologne, and ended up trying those scents instead. Anyone want a swap? I will trade both of those for a TM Cologne, a Bobbie Brown Beach, or a Marc Jacobs Daisy (eau so fresh – or not;)
Emporio – :
Hello Guerlain.
At the web site, now unisex, and with a new designation – Les Eaux.
Search in duckduckgo “guerlain les eaux” works.
Витто – :
Fleeting luxury of the highest order…Eau de Cologne Impériale by Pierre Francios Pascal Guerlain, was created and presented to the Empress Eugenie of France as a cure for her headaches, or so the story goes. As with all “Eau de Colognes”, the effect is a bright, refreshing citrus wakeup call which awakens the senses and refreshes the body… like a tonic.
The formula is an old one. Citrus, Bergamot, Neroli, Petitgrain, some light florals, and some green moss usually at the base (and sometimes some very light musk). Ultimately, this is a luxurious but fleeting experience. It is designed to be applied at different occasions, such as at the beginning of the day, after the morning bathing ritual, or throughout the day, when the weather is hot or when the humidity is overbearing. In all these situations, Eau de Cologne Impériale succeeds.
Where it does not succeed however is if you want it as a perfume for the entire day. It is not meant to be used as such. Because of this, I think if you are looking to buy a similar (to my nose an extremely similar) fragrance… and of course if money is an issue, then go for 4711. Because the formula is almost the same, and the drydown is almost identical on many levels. I agree that the Guerlain smells different in the opening (more natural and citric), but only for the first 5-10 mins, after which they are hard to tell apart.
Ultimately, I would suggest this to anyone with money to spend on the “luxury” of an established, elegant fragrance meant for royalty (and for the history and prestige associated with the house of Guerlain). Otherwise, if money is an issue to you, there are other options out there which do similar things for a much cheaper price. In my opinion Eau de Cologne Impériale is one for the collectors, for those who appreciate history and tradition… and generally for those who have good taste!
diggerman – :
It would be ridiculous to claim Eau de Cologne Imperiale for either gender exclusively, because it is universally pleasant.
To me this is a functional fragrance of a quality that withstood time, the one summer fragrance I cannot live without. A classic and a staple on my bathroom shelf.
Ever since I blind bought it, it’s been love for me. The bee bottle is beautifully designed and is practical, just like the juice itself. I find it refreshes me- mind and body.
If you have ever tried to peel a lemon with your hands and felt the initial spritz of sharp sparkling fresh aroma released when you broke through the thick skin, well that’s the magic of this cologne. It lacks bitterness or sourness, but it isn’t sweet. In hot, humid summer weather, while trapped in a city, in traffic, or in your office without chances of cooling off it’s like a splash of cold water, almost like a slap across the face to wake you up.
I only wish I could buy a larger bottle without having to travel to Paris.
arsencek – :
Eau de Cologne Imperiale by Guerlain is absolutely fantastic. Guerlain has spent countless hours creating such an array of fragrance’s which are legendary in their own right.
I couldn’t agree more with everyone who says that this is the best Eau on the market!
This fragrance is perfect during the spring/summer months. This juice is UNBELIEVABLY well-balanced. Thou it’s listed as a women’s frag, to me this juice is unisex with a real green/citrus aroma. The green note comes from lemon verbena giving it a real herbal with a herbal tone. Neriol is what helps this frag with a hint of sweet/powdery/floral vib making it fresh and clean.
Longevity and Silage is moderate overall lasting about 4-6hrs when you layer it 3x.
Finally thoughts,
I can’t find one thing that could make this juice better. Like an flower, after awhile the aroma lessens once it hits peak. What I enjoy about this frag is the simplicity and the fresh/clean aroma. There’s so many other fragrances which are more synthetic, this juice is the opposite. When I wear this frag I feel good, this fragrance has a real uplifting and calming aromatic scent which is healthy. What do u think…heck yes..5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Could this fragrance STILL be worn by both genders?
KerPlaibianen – :
Since I first tried it on paper in the store, I liked it. All I wanted was top notes. I’ve been wearing it for years – in the morning, after the shower, before work.
Only recently have I applied it midday. On a hot, humid afternoon, maybe 92 F and 90 % humidity, and no shower – was I surprised. What a lift!
So despite it’s shortcomings – sillage and longevity, it smells good, and it’s unpretentious.
That hot day, after an hour or so, I reapplied. I agree, there’s a shift. The fragrance deepens. Or it might just have been me.
