This is the real after the rain (Après la Mousson). As if you stepped out in the after rain out of a crowded bar. You smell the moist, cleaned up streets and your alcoholic breath. Very very wearable. But I expected dirt. Is it under my shoe, too far from my nose stepping out of that bar? The bar where I hugged a girl that wore Chanel Chance Eau Fraîche?
Too much ozon hanging above those clean streets.

Less longevity than if you got some wet soil and covered your arms lol, but it smells just like wet soil.

It’s fresh and clean. Like someone sprayed some lemon juice on dirt. Exactly it. Very wearable — no one is able to tell it’s supposed to be Dirt right away.
Not my favourite scent, though. If you’re looking for actual wet dirt, go for ‘Earthworm’, fancy things more sweet — take ‘Thunderstorm’.

This is real soil, dirty, dirty soil. Very realistic to my nose and unwearable in my opinion. I couldn’t get passed the initial pungent dirty soil smell. I love the smell of soil, but this is too much.

If you want to smell like you just rolled around in the mud like a pig, this is not the right scent for you. Demeter’s Dirt is surprisingly clean, like fresh potting soil drenched with rainwater and sprinkled with greenery. I showed this scent to my grandfather, who is an avid gardener and typical “macho” man who believes men shouldn’t wear perfumes, and he immediately laughed and said that it reminded him of gardening in the rain!
This just shows how well this scent works; it’s so evocative of the outdoors and surprisingly wearable. If an 80 year old who spends half his day gardening can appreciate the photorealism of this scent, I’m sure the rest of us can as well. The only complaint I have about this scent is its longevity. I wish I could smell like dirt all day, as it’s quite subtle and surprisingly clean and inoffensive, but I have to reapply it every hour or so.
Sometimes I layer it with other scents for added longevity. I’ve mixed this with Demeter’s Thunderstorm and Grass, Demeter’s Tomato, Apres L’Ondee from Guerlain, and some sweet scents that lacked a grounding, earthy element.
But I mainly just use this scent as a form of aromatherapy to lift my spirits on days I’ve been depressed or indoors for too long. It makes me feel grounded again.

This isn’t a full review, but I was so surprised at how much greener this was than I expected that I felt like sharing. There is a hefty dose of dry dirt in this, but I also get a lot of green grass. The grass is much more realistic than the grass fragrance, which is pretty sweet and reminds me of coconut a bit. (Grass does seem to be projecting better, though.) There is also a dampness to the smell. While the initial dirt my nose picks up is dry, it is almost like this is dirt and grass getting rained on. It’s super interesting and a lot of fun for me to enjoy, despite how soft the sillage is.

The way a leaf covered road smells after it rains and you’re the first person to walk on the path and the leaves crush under your feet. The frangrance lasts about 30 minutes, not very long. But for the short length of time it does last, its kind of a happy morale booster.

A little story about this scent. Years ago, I was attending a Christmas dinner hosted at an old friend’s home. Later in the evening the host brought out a tray of perfumes and invited everyone to sample them. He mentioned he had just purchased a newly introduced perfume named Dirt.
He asked me to smell Dirt and tell him what I thought. We joked about the name and despite the promise of an enjoyable yet unusual aroma I disliked it, saying it smelled like black mould. Then I sprayed it on a girlfriend sitting next to me who wished to try it.
The host had a basenji dog that was sitting by him all evening who had been quietly observing the proceedings. For a lark, I asked my girlfriend to let the dog smell it. She put her hand up to it’s nose and allowed it to get a whiff. Seconds later, that dog bared it’s teeth and attempted to attack the lady! We were shocked at the reaction! Needless to say, the dog was corrected and immediately removed from the room.
The host put Dirt away and said he was going to return it to the store the next day. Whatever the formula of that perfume, it elicited a violent reaction from his dog, something I have not witnessed since. To this day I wonder what was in it which caused the dog to behave like that. I never knew canines could have such a backlash to a particular perfume. Strange.

Earthy but clean. A warm scent and oddly appealing.

I bought this after testing/sampling Zoologist Bat. I don’t enjoy fruity tropical cocktail type fragrances and never have, so Bat didn’t cut the grade for me, but I did like the dirt/soil component of Bat very much, and this one is actually very comparable. I didn’t purchase this to wear as a single scent, I’ll be using this to layer under other frags, though it is actually quite lovely on its own as well. The deep, moist, earthy overtures are something that I’ve wished for in many fragrances, especially some fig types, and hoping this will give me the opportunity to add what I’ve been missing. Very glad I purchased this.

This is so grounding, so calming! It is the scent of freshly-turned rich soil, after a good rain. Living in NYC, right off a major highway, I often crave the scent of the good earth. It never fails to relax me, and brings back much-loved memories of childhood summers spent upstate. And unlike most Demeters, it has actually longevity, a few hours or so. Minimum sillage, but that’s fine, because I wear this strictly for me. It’s a very optomistic fragrance, with the promise of new life and growth.

Fragrance Review For Dirt Demeter Fragrance
    Notes: Tincture of Soil
A beautiful earthy down-to-earth scent of soil and dirt but in the most wearable and cutest way. This smells like as others have indicated, potting soil, the earth on a potted plant, like having rolled around on dirt as a child while playing in a garden. It also slightly smells like the earth when it’s wet after a rain and just beginning to get dry again. An anti perfume perfume. It does smell very realistic to dirt but it’s still a lot more enjoyable than the monster that is the anti perfume of all anti perfumes Secretions Magnifiques by Etat Libre D’Orange. This is an unusual and lovely perfume. But where would one wear it? That’s the fun part. I wear it when I am out in the country, at a friend’s farm, out in a garden or greenhouse. The scent should match with your environment. If you know you’re gonna be around dirt, potting soil and gardens wear this.

When I first saw the name of this cologne, my first thought was, ‘Who would want to smell like dirt?’ I had to buy it. Here’s the thing though, it really doesn’t smell like dirty dirt if that makes any sense. On me, I get a hint of wet potting soil but it just has an overall very green very earthy composition to it. Believe it or not, it is actually quite pleasant and refreshing. 🙂

  16. :

Yep, smells like rich dark potting soil with a hint of fungus! Not like the red clay by my house but more like the loose black soil by old houses. My house is Victorian but there had been some work done in the past, tilling up the thick red clay which smells different.
I do some metal detecting and gardening so I know my dirt!

This smells like fresh soil after the rain. If you have ever used a shovel you will recognize it immediately. Just don’t get any ideas!

  18. :

Another reviewer nailed it- wet fresh potting soil. Inoffensive, clean, fresh, free. No staying power and it lingers very little. Reminds me of playing by a creek in childhood.

Have a feeling like you just wanna roll around on the freshly cut lawn and cover yourself with a brand new bag of potting soil? Here is your option without getting all dirty. Demeter nails it when it comes to “Dirt” smell. A scent that a gardener or a farmer would understand and appreciate, and it reminds so much of my dirty hands after planting winter/spring pansies.

Great smell of wet soil. Perfect for layering with other perfumes – it adds deep, earthy notes.

Dirt is so cool, exhilarating, and imaginative. It is the smell of growth, roots, wet soil, trees, rain left on leaves, frogspawns, etc!
The scent is so humid, fresh, and earthy.
There is an issue with this, it disappeared from my skin after about 15 minutes. This is my first scent that I tried from this house, I can’t wait to try out others from Demeter like Zombie, and Pipe Tobacco.
Edit 11/3/2014- This smells a little bit like my damp cellar-like basement!

Well, dirt has changed, that is for sure!
I had a bottle around about 2008 I think, and it was very much what I would consider a dry scent. I had read the blurb about it being based on the dry red soil of Arizona (perhaps not, I’m not entirely sure, can’t remember and have never been to the US to know where has dry red dirt!)
Anyway, back in 2008 I had the shower gel, body lotion and the 30ml spray of dirt. And it was definitely a dry, sunbaked red dirt scent. The shower gel and lotion were actually amazingly good, I know the idea of washing with “dirt” is odd, but it was a surprisngly lovely warm, earthy scent, and layered beautifully. The perfume itself was very warm, dry, it smelled on the earth after the sun had dried it dusty.
So it was somewhat a surprise when I sprayed on a sample of the current dirt yesterday to be hit with an amazingly accurate rendition of wet potting soil!
This current dirt is wet, cold, it is more “soil” than dirt. If that makes sense. Where the old dirt reminded me of hot, sunbaked expanses, this new dirt brings to mind potting sheds, British soil in April, wet, moist. So yeah, a bit of a contrast when I thought I knew what to expect.
This does dry down closer to the older version later on, although not quite the same, and after the initial “oh, have you been potting seedlings?” smell has lifted it is actually quite a pleasant, earthy outdoorsy type scent, that would layer well still I think. I just need to get past the shock of the opening. Personally, I think now they should rename this “soil” or “earth” as it would suit better.
Longevity is not as good as it was, probably only around 2-3 hours now. Sillage is soft.

I love the scent of earth, so anything that smells like wet soil is something that should be in my wardrobe. Even if it’s too one-note to often wear alone, I imagine it’d be great to use as a base for other fumes.
Update: I just purchased this blind, and maybe I’m anosmic with this one, because it doesn’t smell remotely like soil to me. I’m getting a strong initial blast of some kind of citrus, and then…nothing. No dirt, no soil, no dampness. Odd. I’ll put it away for a week or so and then try it again.

  24. :

    5 out of 5

I bought this iconic scent because all the reviews intrigued me and I wanted to investigate for myself if the essence of Earth itself is, in fact, wearable.
Fact: This smells like DANK SOIL!
Fact: This is definitely a “hippie” scent. I bet it blends beautifully with Nag Champa or cannabis.
Me personally, I like to be perceived as pretty much normal (even when that means faking sanity whenever necessary.) So nah, I’ll pass on a scent that might make others wonder whether or not I live beneath an underpass. No, I might never be bold enough to wear it on its own.
Blends well with all things natural-scented, i.e.: florals, greens, as well as incense. If these combos sound appealing to you, try Dirt. It just might provide a nice “terra firma” to your pretend garden too.

I read an article about this perfume years ago, and was utterly intrigued!
Although I had no idea the name really described the actual scent.
It does smell like wet soil, but I really like it!
But I thought no one else would like it, so I put it away. Now that I see a few other ladies here on Fragrantica actually like it, I will put it on my vanity again.
The lasting power and sillage is close to zero so even though it is a unique scent, I don’t think anyone will be offended. Because they probably won’t be able to smell it :p
I might pick up “Grass” and layer it with this one for that greenhouse effect.

It does smell like lemony wet muddy , green raining forest . But projection is “ZERO” . Longitivity is maximum 1-2hrs .
This is a skin scent , u need to take ur nose close to smell it .
I bought this bottle because it was my chilhood dream .
I always wanted to have perfume which smells like this .
This is more into diluted side , if they make a EDP or put more oil in this would be helpful .
Will pay twice the price for EDP version .

A dusty pavement with a hope for the rain:) I was completely amazed by this hooliganic fragrance from the Demeter library. From time to time I and my boyfriend used it, just for fun. The same concept of fragrance library is fascinating.

I used to wear this all the time in college in the late ’90s. I read about the perfume in a magazine and decided I had to have it. It really does smell like fresh potting soil.
I had to reapply about every hour or so because the lasting power of this and other Demeter fragrances is nil. I’d even ask people to smell my wrist or neck and they could never smell anything. For that reason, I let this one fade away into my pile of once-loved perfumes.

  29. :

This smells to me like walking into a greenhouse or a garden centre…like warm, damp potting mix.
It is a fresh and clean smell to me, ironically!

Lovely. Warm spring soil, freshly turned, dirty potatoes staight into the basket, muddy wellies. Does what it says on the tin. Smashing.

  31. :

Dirt by Demeter smells like frozen soil in winter. I imagine it that way because there are no other green or autumnal notes, there is only bare soil, asleep in a freezy winter morning. Not the most optimistic scent, but quite picturesque. The soil note is a very dry (synthetic?) version of patchouly – so this is worth trying only if you enjoy patchouli in general. I do like Demeter – they produce fragrances that translate simple, ordinary elements, and at the same time they are very interesting and impressive.

  32. :

This is designed for space voyagers (or city dwellers) in need of a dose of aromatic soil or loam. It smells like the real thing and is lovely. I layer it with Miller Harris Figue Amere for more complexity, or Demeter’s Sandalwood for warmth. It has a touch of fir tree and mushrooms, and it is a private joy (does not seem to have tremendous sillage).

i’d been wanting this for years and finally bought it. and i’ll be returning it. i love the smell of potting soil, and freshly tilled garden soil. this isn’t that. i had hopes that this might smell similar to BPAL’s Graveyard Dirt or Paintbox Soapworks’ Beet It – it does *not*. not even remotely.

Loving dirt !!! When I first sprayed it I got a blast of dirty, freshly picked beetroot! Very earthy and root smelling ! So far I have been enjoying it with other fragrances and it lasts really well on me ! I have quite a few demeters and yes they don’t last long but that’s ok with me , I just spray more on !!! Easy 😉 favorite Demeter is pipe tabacco ! Heavenly

You know how most spicy fragrances don’t really smell like cooking materials, most leather fragrances don’t really smell like an animals hide and most citrus fragrances don’t smell like a piece of fruit?
Well this smells like fresh dirt in an almost scary accurate way, making me wonder what on earth has been put in the bottle.
Something definitely unique and refreshing in a way, and if you have been dying to wander around smelling like wet topsoil all day then this is for you

I love Dirt! Like others have said, it smells just like potting soil.
I sometimes mix it with Michael by Michael Kors. It doesn’t ground the fragrance (har har), but it roughs it up a bit–which I like on occasion.
The only complaint I have about Demeter fragrances is that they last about 5 minutes.

  38. :

Wow,the best dirt Scent ever. I dont know what people expect but it smells like what it says. A nice wearable scent of soil, or even wet soil.

  39. :

A surprisingly clean smelling fragrance, given the name. Slightly earthy, with a hint of sweetness, Dirt is very wearable. However, longevity is only about an hour on my skin and sillage is low.

This is so nice to wear in winter when I’m browsing through the seed-catalogs…

  41. :

I love the smell of actual dirt (soil, not dirty person dirt), so this is pretty incredible to me. I don’t know how Demeter managed it, but this smells simultaneously of wet garden soil, dry dusty midwestern country dirt road AND something you would want to wear (at least I would).
And it has a tiny bit of something familiar – baby powder and faint … umm… plastic doll that has been ground into the dirt and left out in the rain overnight. Dammit, that’s not QUITE it. I’ll update when I figure out what it is that I’m smelling.
    So simple and so beautiful.
ETA: Now I’m only getting a buttery warm plastic note. I can’t smell dirt at all. 🙁
Interesting and lovely for the first hour, then … ech.

I just got a new bottle of this to replace my old one. It doesn’t smell the same. It isn’t as dirt-like. It is a much much lighter smell than the old version. Almost a floral dirt.
Just not the same, though maybe if you have never smelled the older version, the new incarnation will be everything you want it to be.

WEAR THIS WITH “DEMETER GRASS” AND ITS SMELLS LIKE YOU BEEN OUTSIDE ROLLING AROUND IN A GRASSY FIELD

    SOOOOOOOOOOOOO SEXXXY! 🙂

I’m amazed by the fact that this really smells like dirt. Not dirt as in gross dirt, but dirt as in warm soil, or a dusty road. This is a lovely scent to pair up with others! Kicking some craziness into cleaner scents. No wonder Clint Eastwood wears this!

  46. :

I wonder if it’s possible to be anosmic to this… or whether I alsready smell “dirt”y but I can barely smell this one, even though reviewers on basenotes have said it’s quite strong.
I get a very fleeting cold clean scent like a cold slab of wet clay that lasts for about two minutes. There’s something a little camphorous about it. It’s very pretty, and not at all what I would consider dirty. Then it’s gone.
I don’t mind fleeting scents at all, I’m just afraid of dousing myself in something others have no trouble smelling, so I’m cautious about this one.

  47. :

This is easily one of my favourites from Demeter. I was so hoping for wet, brown dirt and that’s exactly what I got.
As a child I was fascinated by soil of all kinds. Out of red clay I’d make little figurines and place them in the sun to go hard and out of brown dirt I’d make mud cakes. It’s possibly where my love for cooking began.
Dirt is damp, slightly musty, earthy and refreshing. I can see why Madonna wears this, it is charming in an odd kind of a way. Of course the name makes you crinkle your nose, but seriously experience it and your mind will change altogether.
I’m from the country, so perhaps I do feel a strong connection to the earth and its scent, but I do believe that anyone could learn to love this. It smells like fresh, juicy roots under the earth as well.
This fragrance is really enjoyable, I’ve been sniffing it all morning and its suiting this strange rainy weather we have today. A masterpiece in my opinion. It actually lasts on my skin a lot longer than expected too.

If you are upset by the idea of wearing a fragrance that smells like DIRT then you have missed the point of the Demeter Fragrance Library. They are single scents that capture a moment, a place, an element or something organic. Huge fun! “Laundromat” smells like fresh laundry bouncing around in a dryer, “Creme Brulee” smells like that famous french desert and “Sex On The Beach” smells like…. ok so if you haven’t experienced it then the scent may be hard to gauge. So Dirt smells like Dirt, not dirty or off but like soil.
As their name suggests – ‘Fragrance Library’ should be collected, add them to your library of fragrances. You might keep a Gideon next to the bed but your library should be full of wonderful varied experiences to expand your mind.
I recommend you mix Demeter, make your own combos. They are the closest most will get to being able to create their own scent.
    Birthday Cake x 2 squirts
    +Sex on the Beach x 2 squirts
    +Dirt x 1 squirt
    = Shagaliscious

If I wanted to smell dirt, I just need to go to the local store where every farmer in town shops! Good Grief, I would not spend a nickel on something named “Dirt”. Is there marketing department on drugs or something?

  50. :

    5 out of 5

dirt smells exactly like the soil where i grew up in california when i would dig a foot down where it’s moist and full of life, and plant something. i never thought i would find that smell so compelling, but it isn’t just ‘earthy’ it’s exotic – without resorting to patchouli (which i can’t stand) or sweeter woods.

  51. :

When Fragrance Library finally reached the stores in our country it attract the attention of all the customers just immediately. The very first bottle that I took for a sniff certainly was “Dirt”, as this is the most intriguing title of all others.
As I just sprayed it I immediately recognized the distinct smell of peat. And it was so much fun! Really made me smile. I could never mistake the smell of peat with any other, as I know it from the very childhood. We had a country house near Karelia, where all the forests grow on this kind of soil and there are lots of swamps – the peatery, in one word. Those, who have the country houses in these forests, should be super-care with fire, as the peat is very much inflammable. It may burn underneath the upper level of the soil, so people may see only the smoke, and if they step on this soil they will fall underground in the burned-out hollows, where the peat was before. So, that is a very dangerous thing.
And that’s how it smells. A true fresh, wet and rich peat!
This is very nice, interesting and unusual fragrance, though I can’t imagine how to wear it, and especially how to use the body care products of this series 🙂 But yet again – it may “sound” very nice on a man’s skin.

Actually, this is rather nice! I sniffed it recently and had no intention of posting a review BUT: I just can’t let a negative review stand on the basis of the name alone!
The name is perfectly descriptive; it’s really the smell of soil/earth. This is DIRT, not fertilizer… there’s nothing nasty or objectionable about it at all!
Demeter’s Dirt is the clean, refreshing fragrance of the damp ground in the late days of winter or early spring just after the frozen ground has thawed a bit. The ozonic fragrance of snow is still a bit evident in the air but something is different… the air no longer smells neutral somehow… there’s a new fullness to the air that hints at the soon-to-emerge first peeks of green shoots, and perhaps some glimpses of color after weeks and months of snow and leafless branches.
Demeter’s Dirt smells of life and the promise of emerging growth. Surprise yourself and go find some to sniff.
