Description

In September of 2014, Guerlain launches the re-edition of its vintage fragrance Coque d’Or from 1937. Perfumer Thierry Wasser adapts the old formula created by Jacques Guerlain following the modern safety standards in the industry. However, if you want to try the old formulas with the original ingredients, you can do so by visiting the Maison Guerlain museum of perfume bottles.

Coque d’Or from 1937, named after the French name for the opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, means “golden shell.” Jacques Guerlain dedicated it to his friend Sergei Diaghilev, the founder of Ballet de Russe. The perfume came in cobalt blue bow-shaped Baccarat bottles coated in gold, designed by Jean-Michel Franck.

Guerlain relaunches Coque d’Or as an exclusive vintage edition using a small number of the original Baccarat bottles from the archive. The fragrance is chypre, fruity, floral and musky. It opens with accords of aldehydes, bergamot, fruits, anise and lavender. The heart is composed of jasmine, carnation, cyclamen and orris root merged with woody and oriental tones of vetiver, patchouli, tolu balsam and musk, laid on the base of moss, civet and vanilla.

Guerlain Coque d’Or (2014) is available in only 29 copies in the original bottles of 190 ml at the price of 17,000 Euros, which makes this the most expensive Guerlain edition so far.

If the ingredients used were no doubt the real deal (like the original formula) and I was the wife of an Arab sheikh, I say 17000 Euros is pretty much nothing…

17,000 euros. Liquid gold. What is the world coming to. I will not spend more than £800 on a perfume. Even I have my limits.

Look on the bright side . . . Even though it has a price tag of 17,000 Euros, the Euro as of late (vs. the US Dollar) has completely tanked 🙂

Just attended the launching of this re-release in Hong Kong earlier today and tested this parfum on the back of my hand. The opening of this fragrance reminded me of a very smooth Mitsouko Extract with a prominent Bergamot note laced with Lavender, slightly sweet fruits and a hint of anise. Carnation was the strongest note in the heart with lots of spicy clove, balsam, slightly smoky Vetiver and moss. As the fragrance reached the late heart/early dry down, a slightly sweet note like Ylang Ylang and more noticeable Patchouli and pepper resembling a very light and soft leather scent joined in. At that stage, the scent kind of reminded me of Chant d’Aromes but less floral. At the late dry down, five hours after initial spray, the scent became soft but still very noticeable with musk, moss, civet and carnation.
Testing the fragrance and seeing the bottle (and the box) of the 2014 version of Coque d’Or was truly an experience as everything was perfect. The presentation of the fragrance in person was much more beautiful than any of the photographs and videos that I had ever seen. The reformulated fragrance itself was absolutely gorgeous although many of the ingredients used in the original formula were no longer available or used.
As for the outrageous 17,000 Euros price tag, I personally agree that it is too high for most sane persons but for those who could afford the money, I certainly feel that it is a fair price to get such piece of art and history. To make this fragrance more attractive to the buyer in Hong Kong, the store that sells it will throw in a three-day trip flying business class from Hong Kong to Paris for two with two night staying at the Inter-Continental Hotel and a full day experience at the Guerlain 68 Champs-Elysees Boutique and Spa for free. Really very tempting, but not for me this time. Not yet.

    would love to try it!
why not make perfumes affordable for everyone?
    come on…..

Ok… Great news. But let’s try to justify the price a little.
    1-190 ml perfume.
    2-Baccarat bottle.
    3-Covered in gold (I think)
    4-Just 29 bottles means it’s extremely rare.
    5-It’s a Guerlain.
So… As crazy as 17000 Euros sounds, the company has the right to put the price it feels is “fair” for a fragrance that rare. Imagine the frenzy that will emerge if the bottle was cheaper… Everyone would want it, it would end up in the black market with prices reaching over 17000 euros!

I saw the notes and wanted it. Then I saw the price and I cried.

For the bottle collectors only, as you are assuredly paying for a golden bottle rather than the juice inside.
