Description

Full name of this cologne is Cologne Bensimon creee a Paris 1993 (Cologne Bensimon made in 1993 in Paris).

Serge Bensimon, one of the Bensimon brothers (Serge and Yves, who run the company) met Pierre Bourdon in the beginning of the 1990es, and asked him to create a personal fragrance for him. Cologne 1993 was born this way. Serge was wearing it for more then 10 years before he decided to share it with fans of Bensimon lifestyle.

Fragrances are available in cologne concentration, which is a good, old, universal form of fragrance, very appropriate for everyone. A video commercial that you can watch on the Bensimon website is a witness to that.

Cologne 1993 has an opulent formula, which includes citruses (bergamot, lemon, petit-grain), precious wood (cedar, sandalwood, patchouli), resins (benzoin and myrrh), amber, aromatic herbs (lavender, geranium and hyssop), as well as leather and animalistic notes (jasmine absolute jasmine, civet absolute, castoreum…).

The fragrance itself is fresh and warm; woody ad musk, with a pleasant patchouli aroma and comfortableness of amber, myrrh, benzoin, refreshed with aromatic lavender and citrus. It is both fresh and oriental in the same time.

The fragrance used by a perfumery owner for years, is now available to all who want to get in touch with the Bensimon lifestyle and their fragrances.

The notes have me wondering if this is at all similar to L’Air de Panache.

I find this Pierre Bourdon’s fragrance a bit hard to describe. I had never heard about it since a dear friend sent me a generous decant and it honestly was love at first sniff. It shares many similarities with Helmut Lang EDC and EDP (both RIP) while feeling at the same time extremely classic and very french. A citrusy opening (mainly bergamot) is joined by a restrained yet incredibly sophisticated woody-resinous-ambery accord bonded around a leathery-castoreum base. It has many aspects of old-fashioned orientals (Bal A Versailles among many others) but it is SO masterfully orchestrated to result somewhat modern and versatile. Rrstrained, very civilized and absolutely delightful. There’s something so timeless about it, something so comforting…Just perfect.
It’s an EDC so both longevity and sillage are slightly below the average but this is so nicely executed that I honestly don’t care.
On a side note, with price tags fixed to 30(-ish) euros for 100ml and 70(-ish) for 250ml, Cologne Bensimon 1993 is a terrific candidate to become one of the best bangs for the bucks around…
