Description

In November 2015, Yves Saint Laurent presents its new collection of luxury fragrances Le Vestiaire des Parfums, which includes five new releases: Caban, Caftan, Tuxedo, Saharienne and Trench. The “perfume wardrobe” collection is inspired by the iconic pieces of Yves Saint Laurent clothing.

Caftan is an oriental fragrance of incense, benzoin, galbanum and musk. It was created by perfumer Calice Becker.

All the fragrances are unisex. They are available as 125 ml Eau de Parfum.

This is a beautiful beast..the incense is smokey the benzoin and vanilla aren’t syrupy sweet rather an incredible masculine monster.

At first sniff I thought it was nice but the more this dries down the better it gets! So beautiful

YSL had disappointed me when they discontinued their original exclusive line, as I loved Majestic Rose and Noble Leather. I didn’t get a chance to try this until today and I’m rather impressed, which surprised me. Many newer YSL fragrances have made me sad because they didn’t seem to represent the house as a whole but this does seem to be a return to the likes of Opium. Not unlike other things out there, but its a full bodied and quality scent. Rather spicy and resinous. Definitely not suitable for the warmer weather though, lol!

I love Body Kouros, so I thought this would be an upmarket (i.e. better) oriental incense by YSL … but when I finally tried it I was surprised to find Body Kouros was better.
Sometimes the more mainstream fragrances become mainstream just because they’re really good …

A stunning incense benzoin. Projection and longevity is through the roof. Top quality scent that lasts and lasts.

Blind buy based on the description since I couldn’t sample It anywhere.
Dense. Dark. Smoky and for on me – leathery. Smelled like some kind of a leather item that I used to have (almost like horse harness) with sweetness. I am a woman, and I think this leans more masculine, but i think it is a statement scent, and a woman can pull it off as well. Strong and powerful scent.
The dry down, now three hours since the initial spray, is very soft and pleasant. I keep trying to catch the trail – it’s so very enjoyable. I am happy with the pick, but beware: not everyone’s cup of tea for a blind purchase

Possibly my favourite scent EVER. It is just that good. It’s smooth, ambery, resiny, not too sweet…Incensy. It’s just PERFECT. Stunning quality.

This is the first perfume I tried from the Vestiaire Collection because Caftan is my favorite garment, and it turned out it was my favorite fragrance of the collection as well. The first time I left without buying it, dismayed by the price (240 euros). However, I couldn’t stop smelling my wrist or my jacket sleeve afterwards and it was always in my mind. Eventually, the price dropped dramatically, so I got myself a bottle as soon as I could.
This smells like amber for the first half hour or so, but then the incense starts shining through and it becomes brighter and brighter as the time passes. After a couple of hours, it’s straight incense and laudanum on me, comforting and yet sensual. Lasting power is great, over 12 hours and maybe more, but the sillage is very soft and no one until now has commented on it,a s if they don’t notice it. I would prefer a bit more spice as it’s perhaps too creamy for me, but then the incense is so yummy that it makes up for everything else. I expect to get much use of this one during the winter.

I sampled the entire Vestiaire line at Neiman’s in Dallas last weekend. They were pushing Tuxedo, but this one was easily my favorite. I loved it so much I went back and bought it the next day at retail price, which is extremely rare for me. I keep trying to find a reason to regret it, but I haven’t found one. I wouldn’t change a thing about it, which is also rare for me to say about a fragrance. It’s one of those “where have you been all my life while I’ve been wearing these pedestrian ambers” type-deals. I have a sizeable collection, and this truly stands out. It’s that wonderful.
It’s pricey, for certain, but it’s a HUGE bottle (4.2oz). It’s strong without overbearing and lasts without falling flat somewhere in the middle of its trek, even in the humid southern summer. It’s perfect from start to finish. It’s just as beautiful on the skin as it is on clothing. I can’t wait to try this when it cools off, I suspect it will really shine for me in late autumn.

This perfume calms me down. I take a deep breath and continue with my life.
Frankincense smelling perfumes does that to me.
The smell keeps reappearing during the day and with every move.. it’s not overwhelming and I can easily wear it during summer.

Soft and comfortable oriental scent, quite dry and smokey, almost balsamic instead of being filled with sugary sweets and strong spices. Not shy but not loud at all the same time. A pleasant niche scent, totally unisex and easy-to-wear for those who love delicate spiciness of incense and benzoin. Very elegant as a couture caftan can be.

    Just have bought at Amsterdam.
Well this one totally reminds me the Bazar of Tuniz.
    Insane Longevity
    Heavy Sillage.
Must have if you like the Desert like Arabian perfumes.

I recalled liking Caftan the best of the Le Vestiaire de Parfum collection of Yves Saint Laurent released in late 2015, so I received a generous sample from Bergdorf Goodman in NYC, and it’s a nice powdery amber/incense blend, simply put.
There’s not much complexity to it but certainly plenty of sophistication. It starts off extremely sharp but very quickly (within a minute) dries down into a more tolerable blend of amber and incense, still with powder (perhaps the galbanum), and the powder diminishes over time.
Performance is good, as this is a strong for an EDP, and pricing is not terrible at $250 for 125ml, the only size/price point available, but still, this feels redundant to Dior Mitzah in some respects, but with more powder and less sweetness and depth than Mitzah, so I have no place for it in my collection as I prefer other expressions of amber (By Kilian Amber Oud, Tom Ford Amber Absolute, Tauerville Amber Flash, etc.) that are bit more gourmand, sweeter, and richer.
A nice option for those who like powdery amber, though!

Although I’ve yet to try Trench, I can safely say this is the only one in the collection that’s really worthwhile…if you like amber.
It’s a rather simple one–soft with a little powdery, floral, and fruity touch–but done well with class and comfort. Quality is between the cheaper Ambre Gris (Pierre Balmain), Ambre Nue (Atelier), and the higher end Oriental Brulant (Guerlain) and even Mitzah (Dior), but smell wise I think it’s closest to Coromandel (Chanel) with the patchouli cut in half.
Unfortunately it just dies down with time unlike the aforementioned fragrances which resonates on my skin.

A beautifully crafted good old fashioned amber. Rich and warm aroma with impressive heft, that could be considered classic by some but provocative by those accustomed in the metallic or aquatic tame offers of the current mainstream market. I am glad to see such a creation from YSL and I would love it even more if it were somehow reflected on the mainstream department of this house with its broader availability.
Only tried it once but due to the bold presence of Labdanum, it seems to me it has much more in common with Ambre Sultan than Encens Satin that another reviewer states here. From the Armani Prive line it shares more similarities with Myrrhe Imperiale (another favourite of mine). Compared to Ambre Sultan it is a bit more complex and projects a bit more evenly through its development. On the other hand it lacks the brave naturalistic thyme note that I so love in Amber Sultan. Definitely worth trying should you ever come across it.

    Jaradona,
You probably ment: just hope that it lacks the makeup smell (Iris=Rouge) included in all Dior Homme fragrances

Caftan is a beautiful ambery incense fragrance. The style of Armani Encens Satin, though incense in YSL is even more muted. The problem is that on skin the scent is powdery smelling like an indian incense stick. As if you take the stick and rub the skin with it.

I will be straight forward. Caftan has a warm and balsamic oriental appearance with a hint of a warm and smokey scent. Little hint of spicy incense with a combination of vanilla.

“A floating veil of incense embroidered with vanilla lightly drapes the skin in the same way that the fluidity of the caftan caresses the body. Inspired by the vibrancy of Moroccan culture, CAFTAN calls upon all the bursting and colorful fabrics of the East. The shimmering amber deploys deep sensual promises that mirror the exuberance and warmth of ochre and sandy shades.”
