I had forgotten that I disliked the sample of this when I tried it last year. I was browsing online and wanted to buy Oud Minerale, but it was out of stock so I settled on this since I was in the TF mindset.
First spray: “Oh yeah…I actually didn’t like this and was glad I didn’t blind buy back then. Damn it.”
A day later: “It’s tolerable I guess…”
I can’t return it anyway, and I’m starting to like it enough to think I’ll spray it at home when the weather gets cooler. I don’t think I’d wear this out much though. I think it’s barely unisex but leans heavily female and definitely skews old. I don’t mean that in an offensive way, but certain scents elicit certain images. Like smelling some cheap melon body spray would make me think, “Young. Very young.” The first spray of this made me think, “Older woman.”
I asked my sister, “What does this smell like? Does it smell like an old lady?”
She said, “Not necessarily old lady. Just not…young. Kind of smells like something on ma’s dresser.”
I asked my friend, “What does this smell like?”
He said, “You smell like my grandma.”
If I really like a scent, I don’t necessarily care what other people think, but since I’m not over the moon with the scent myself and the response seems to be “You smell old(ish) and womanish” I’m gonna say not the best scent for a 30 year old guy. Like I said though, if I personally like something I’ll still wear it even if it’s not what you would imagine a 30yo guy to wear. For example, I’ve been using Soleil Blanc all summer, and I’m sure most would say that’s feminine. I’ll try it again in the winter and see if I like it more.
This purchase is a good lesson for me to do more research on the each note if I going to blind buy. I do love rose, but I love the rose that’s in Perfumer’s Workshop’s Tea Rose and Jo Malone’s Red Roses. I didn’t know that may rose smells of raspberries which might be why I had trouble finding that clean red rose note in here–granted my nose probably isn’t as developed as other people’s here. Also like most people, I couldn’t detect any coffee, but I did get something that smelled a bit like chocolate. I was checking the reviews here again today and came across Smellafella’s review that explains why you won’t get coffee here but rather something that smells like raspberry chocolates.

Very generic smell, nothing outstanding. For me performance is quite bad. I would expect a more distinctive fragrance and definitely a better projection. Disappointing.

My funeral Rose.
This parfum reminds me of dark and secret things.
It is a bold dark rose on my skin and the coffee is not too strong.
The incense comes up and it turns to a really black and expensive perfume and when I say black I mean all this sadness like a man wearing this at a funeral in the Victorian era with a purple rose in his lapel.
It is sexy and somehow this perfume plays games with your skin and mind.
I think it is a sadistic rose.
It punishes you in a way when you wear it.
A very good one.
Excellent work.
I really enjoy it.

Cafe Rose opens in a way not dissimilar to Majestic Rose from YSL, minus the woody notes. It dries down to a very lovely, sometimes heavy rose / saffron affair. Its not as though this combination hasn’t been done before, and it’s not exactly as though Cafe Rose brings anything new to the table… but there’s no avoiding that this is just very refined. Perfect for the winter / cold autumnal evenings and okay, in small doses during spring. Opens with pepper, rose, tart raspberry and patchouli. These follow through to the heart when coffee comes in to the mix which then follows into the heart, discarding the pepper and blending with the spicy saffron which lessens a little over time.
Elegant, nothing new, but elegant all the same. You probably won’t need this if you have a complex spicy rose already, but who am I to speak for others who probably experienced something different?

Really disliked this the first few times I tried it. WAY too much coffee and 80s. Was honestly baffled by the reviews. Now that my sample has sat around for 6+ months, apparently either my tastes have changed (very possible) or there was some chemistry that needed time to develop.
I still don’t *love* it, but it is more than pleasant. I find it to be more femme than the other reviewers here seem to, but overall pretty unisex. There’s an evolution of scent that is interesting, and really where I think Tom Ford tends to excel. That and his oud is the one that smells the nicest on me.
It does surprise me that amber is listed so far down on the notes detected list. To me it is pretty up there with the rose, just politely. In the background, keeping the scent creamy rather than crisp or watery. Everything else comes in and out around the rose as the day goes on and depending on temperature.

CLEAR ROSEWATER
______________________________________________________
I was looking for a good rose fragrance and based on the reviews here I blind bought Café Rose.
I was surprised by it. From the beginning until the dry down, all I can sense is a clear incredibly fresh rose with a hint of saffron. Nothing else. NO coffee, no patchouli, no incense. Just fresh and clean rosewater, which lasts.
Longevity: – 7/10
Sillage: – 7/10
All in all: 10 out of 10 subjective points -> because I was looking for a clean rose scent, and that’s what Café Rose delivered.

I’ve really liked this one since the first time I smelled it and it never fails to get compliments…that being said it’s safe to say it’s definitely unisex and I’d use it for a night out if I’d have to pick an occasion.

Picture an early 80s disco album cover: a bouquet of red roses glowing next to a burning candle, a mysterious female hand with pointed red nails, reaching for a glass of wine. Looks amazing, interesting, seductive. Excited to hear the music, you open the record sleeve and put the vinyl down on your wood-paneled vintage turntable. You quickly realize that the music sucks. But hey, the album cover is cool.
Love the striking design of the bottle, but that isn’t nearly as important as what’s inside. Tom Ford fragrances are long-lasting and initially enjoyable, but I find they lack complexity. Same goes for Tobacco Vanille, to which I gave the same type of review…
It’s like dating that hunky handsome guy you’ve always dreamed of, and then realizing he has no deeper qualities and is, in fact, a very shallow and boring person to be around. You know you could never fall in love with a guy like that.

To me in opening it smells very much like a Tuscan leather, I am wondering why I am the only one who feel like this.
I believe this is because of the Safron and May Rose combination and May Rose smells like a raspberry so this what make it similar with tuscan leather.
It smells good, as I love Tuscan leather and it gives me same vibe.
in first 2-3 hours it projects good, but after that it becomes skin scent and remain till 6-7 hours.
In dry down it smells very smooth and easy going and a bit creamy.

HERES WHY YOU DONT SMELL COFFEE:
First, lets ignore the notes of Turkish Rose, Bulgarian Rose, & Incense.
The first thing i want to point out is that May Rose smells like Raspberry.
This is why we get fruit with no mention of fruit in the note break down.
Second: The coffee note is very subtle, & blends with the Patchouli. The Patchouli itself lends a soft Chocolate scent. Together they create a soft Mocha accord.
The combination of the May Rose, Coffee, & Patchouli at this point smells like those Raspberry filled Chocolates that come with Valentines Day Candy.
Third: The Sandalwood comes in very strong, & combined with the Amber, & Saffron it smells very creamy, milky, & lightly spiced.
Lastly: when all of this blends together, what you’re left with is an Accord that smells like a CAFE AU LAIT WITH MOCHA & RASPBERRY.
…And if you allow the other two Rose notes back into your scent profile, it then smells like a CAFE AU LAIT WITH MOCHA & TURKISH DELIGHT.
The reason why no one smells Coffee is because they are searching for a NOTE, & overlooking the ACCORD.
I am a child of the 70’s, & when Cafe Au Lait became popular my Mom drank it all of the time….& i will never forget that smell.
But dont take my word for it. Order yourself a Cafe Au Lait with Mocha & Raspberry & see for yourself.
Eat one of those Raspberry filled Chocolates at Valentines & see for yourself.
The Coffee that is supposed to be noticed is an Accord, not a note. Tom Ford is a fucking Genius !

Italian Cypress for Yatagan (though most say Z-14), Noir for Habit Rouge; much of the Ford oeuvre consists of uprezzed or dumbed-down interpretations of classic masculines long-since lost to brand-stretching or the vagaries of consumer preference. Whatever the originality of the enterprise, one could at least rely on the quality of materials, at least in his Private Blend line.
And then there’s this. With the exception of a headache-inducing linalool, Cafe Rose is every other attar in the Al-Haramain/Rasasi/Swiss Arabian bargain basement range. A scrubber.

Dark, evening, winter rose, strong incense and some chocolate or coffee bean smell. I would prefer this mature feminine smell on a sexy young man (or stayed young man) for some reason. It would intrigue me. It reminds me of Bvlgari´s jasmin noir which I had in 2009 and loved. I purchased the sampler but will not buy the bottle.
LandRew(TM) – :
Very nice and pleasing scent, comfortable and wearable.
Starts out with an odd random green note (not unpleasant just odd), then almost immediately moves on to rose and coffee (dropping the green note entirely).
Remains as such for a bit, and then the coffee disappears.
From then on, it’s just a very nice, rich, languid rose/patchouli accord – with some very soft amber and even softer spice in the background. Stays that way indefinitely.
One of my favorites in the Tom Ford line.

This smells like pure rose water mixed with saffron. I can’t detect any coffee, incense or anything dark in it. it has the whole middle eastern vibe. if you’re into pure rose fragrances, you’ll love it. it has nice sillage and longevity too.
But I can’t recommend this to my fellow Iranian perfume lovers. it does have quality, but the smell of rose water is really tacky here and most people try to avoid having it in their perfumes.

If you want a pure, natural rose but want an oriental red rose rather than the dozens of pastel pink rose scents out there, this is exactly what you’re looking for. Amazing projection and longevity too!

Café Rose By Tom Ford was my very first Tom Ford. Since then I’ve worn many a superb fragrance from his line. Dude knows his trade very well, an expert nose and fragrance businessman. First of all, let me start by saying that with rose in the name of the fragrance, it never bothered me that it would smell of rose, which is typically considered a feminine thing, and in perfumery a note which is found in many women’s fragrances. I’m a gender bender and wear both men and women’s fragrances as well as unisex fragrances and vintage perfume that was for women but smell like it’s for men. Vintage women’s perfume from yesteryear often had notes which come through as quite masculine be they notes of musk or leather or deep woods and green notes. This fragrance right here is UNISEX. The rose in the cologne is a smoky patchouli-rose with a spicier edge and a peppery, as well as aromatic flavor. This is a night blooming rose with a Persian character as others have noted. Smells like a Turkish rose oil and is quite potent and in fact it’s similar to patchouli oil which has been used to mask the weed smell of cannabis.
Café rose opens with spices and a vanishing saffron note which gives this a decidedly Oriental flair. It whisks you away to an outdoor market place and café in Istanbul or Casablanca Morocco. This is not a European café in Paris on the Left bank. No sir. This is a café where men in those Turkish fez hats serve you coffee tea and allow you the pleasure of smoking tobacco. A tiny tobacco smell wafts up through the base and it’s quite masculine and classic. The images that come through my head are all in black and white and I’m inside a film noir set in Istanbul or Casablanca during WW2. Smells of an exotic locale where adventure is just around the corner but at present you sit reading a newspaper smoking a cigar and drinking strongly brewed coffee.
The coffee note is quite an innovative touch but it does not take over the scent otherwise it would be too graphic like you know when you’re at a Starbucks and you get whiffs of those coffee packages that you pass by on the way to the counter. This is a deep ground coffee smell but it’s not dominant. The patchouli is the bigger accord, herbal and spiced up with pepper and that gorgeous rose note that is bewitched and covered in smoke. This is incense. Rose scented incense.
It reminds me of other smoky roses or Oriental roses like Armais Calligraphy Rose and Egoiste by Chanel as well as Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle. These roses are not grandmother’s roses in her garden or in vases at her place. They are wild roses, exotic and on fire, with a complexity and depth that comes with age and wisdom. Very hard to wear this frag when you’re a young lad and your skin is fresh and you have very little worries. Café rose is a mature fragrance for one who really does have time to sit back and smell the scent. In practical terms, this unisex fragrance is made to be worn in winter. It’s warm and musky, smoky and balsamic. The skin becomes warmer as you wear it. It’s something to put on with a coat, scarf, gloves, leather trench coats that kind of thing. It’s definitely made to be worn in a cold climate like Russia despite it’s Arabic leanings.
Another winner from Tom Ford

IMHO the most realistic rose fragrance is Sa Majeste La Rose from Serge Lutens. this one has almost the same rose smell with added coffee. very nice.
asjfueacvuy – :
A lot of people say this is just rose. I disagree. It is primarily rose but if you search long enough, you can tell theres a little coffee in there. It’s just enough to give the rose a creamy attitude. But it’s not gourmand. It’s almost candied like rose water. This is a warm rose as opposed to the fresh rose perfumes that take the citrusy route. I think the notes work really well together here. I’d buy a bottle if it were cheaper. I’m not so sure if I can commit this much to rose. But I do prefer this over Noir de Noir which is a more heavy, gourmand rose. This is more subdued and minimalist; only hinting at the warmth.

Tested this 2 days ago and my whole bathroom smells divine because the tester card I sprayed it on is on my vanity unit. Excellent
longevity as most private blends have in common. You know I think of Tobacco Vanille when I smell Cafe Rose and there are no common notes so perhaps it’s the lovely Tom Ford signature I’m picking up on. Now I’m on the hunt for a bottle to add to my many other Tom Ford fragrance collection.
Anyone who has a 50ml bottle available for swap or sale, please PM me.

I’ve tried many times to “get” this and I finally do! I used to just get screechy rose and saffron with no coffee to be found but now I finally smell the coffee, yay! This is not a sweet or gourmand coffee note like in Black Opium, it’s a dry coffee bean note but it rounds out the rose and saffron. The rose is a fresh red rose that is still pretty sharp but in a good way. This is perfect if you want a rose that isn’t exactly oriental but not powdery/girly girl either. Smells very expensive and high quality too (but I mean it is lol). It reminds me of an Arabian style rose moreso than a western one which is a-ok with me.

Cafe Rose evokes a picture of early morning in a cafe. An airport lounge, quite luxurious. It`s Middle East no doubt:Bahrain, Muscat or Dubai.Still a night in Europe but here comes the sun and another day- businessmen are drinking coffee, reading news on their palmtops and preparing to follow some results of world stock exchanges.A voice of ground staff girl announces forthcoming flights, coffee maker is percolating vividly.
I`m not into dividing perfumes between East and West but Cafe Rose is perfectly into the first one.Sniffing your wrists you can`t single out all the ingredients easily.A good alcohol, rum or whiskey comes as first.Next is coffee impression, not a hot drink but scented air-stream from the percolator.Rose is somewhere between incense accents and spices: saffron and pepper.I can`t detect much patchouli but sandalwood base works for some creaminess in the end.Rose is eastern in its nature, damask not a may one for me.One day it seems to smell a bit sharp like rose essence, another one it`s fading away like scented rose rather than a flower itself.Generally Rose Cafe is a well mixed, dry, smart and longlasting composition. Not so brave as Calligraphy Rose or obvious like Rose d`Arabie but really interesting among TF Private Blends.Evening suggestion rather

I have a few TF fragrances. They’re nice but nothing I would buy again after finishing a bottle. However, Cafe Rose I cannot live without. I had a 50ml bottle that I used up. I couldn’t go a month before I was forced to buy the 100ml bottle that just arrived today. I wear it during the day to work, I wear it to go out for dinner and I wear it to bed. It is a beautiful perfume. I love the smell of red roses and that’s what this perfume delivers. It dries down to a soft, soapy fragrance which I also love. If you don’t like roses or soapy perfumes you may not care for this one. But if you’re like me about and want a true rose, this one is gorgeous. I get tons of compliments. Only downside is this only lasts about 4-5 hours.

I absolutely agree with MrMikki! This is totally a beautiful, elegant, discreet rose, a delightful rose, a magical rose! With a gentle smooth delicious warm spicy coffee slowly blending in after a few hours. It’s divine!!! It’s heavenly!! The patchouli is so earthy and has a fresh herby smell, and the amber melds and smooths and calms everything. It is lovely and noticeable to others, who always tell me I smell beautiful, and it lasts incredibly well, 16 hours easily. It’s beautifully beautiful!!!! And my husband, who wears it and smells gorgeous in it himself, adores it on me, and loves snuggling up to my neck, often!!!

I’m quite sure that there are so many people like me who love the rose smell but can’t find anything with an elegant, modest and delicate touch. Because most of the rose fragrances are usually too sharp, exaggerated and flashy outside.
Cafe Rose is such a genius harmony combination. You’ll smell the rose with a magical touch without disturbing anyone around you – also because saffron is the hidden hero and supporter that makes it so rich-.
Rose takes the majority for long hours and then coffee becomes visible.
I don’t agree with comments saying it’s an old woman perfume. It’s ABSOLUTELY unisex and not for old ages at all… For all young&midle aged people with a cool style. 😉
qwwin – :
An initially well blended light coffee and rose fragrance which soon goes close to the skin..
I applied heavy sprays
0 – 1.5 hours- 5 inch projection. This is a very well blended dual fragrance. You can clearly detect a soft white coffee and a delicate, non piercing rose. Mostly feminine and well done
1.5 hours – 4 hours – 2 inch projection. Low performance which is a shame and furthermore, the dual notes disappear and instead you have a generic sweet fragrance, still nice, but lost its initial niche quality.
4 hours – 6 hours. Close to skin.
Wonderful opening but it has low performance and it’s not cost effective to overspray in an attempt to make up for the lack of projection.
It may seem crass to suggest that an intense version of this should be released as this is a private blend, but Tom Ford has released so many fragrances now that I think the Private Blend aura has been lost. An intense version would be very welcome to me.

yustas22 – :
The opening is my least favourite part because it reminds me of Noir de Noir with the very heavy rose mixed with a hint of saffron and pepper.
This initial phase dissipates after 3 minutes, and the fragrance starts to completely take a different direction leaving Noir de Noir behind.
Lots of rose, tangy rose, powdery rose, fruity rose, but never too sweet and never cloying. The main scent that I get from a distance is this berry type of a rose scent, and as I get closer to smell it even more I notice this dark earthiness of the coffee only in the background. It is actually more like freshly ground Turkish coffee.
The third phase is when the fragrance settles on the skin after about 3 hours where the fruitiness diminishes and the coffee comes to the surface, but still mixed with the most wonderful, elegant, and well-made rose note.
Two thumbs up for this fragrance although I think it is more feminine than masculine. I am a woman by the way so this might be why it is playing this way on my skin.

Went to my local perfume counter today and tried this one out.
I really liked it after just sniffing the bottle, but when i sampled it on those small cardboard sheets they have for this purpose, i was really disappointed…
On paper, i just got a very medicinal scent much alike bug repellent. Not pleasant at all.
I then sprayed it on my wrist to see if it was any different, and i was not impressed by that either … just a rose scent among all other rose scents.
Some time passed and then i found myself wondering WHAT on earth it was that smelled so good around me.
Sniffed my wrist and, yes, the amazing scent i kept on noticing all the time was Café Rose. It had gone from a bland rose scent to a very sweet, oriental, powdery rose… Very elegant and classy, and a bit alike Yves Rocher’s Rose Ispahan.
At this time, i found myself being in love with this perfume.
Later on i sniffed my wrist again to get a whiff of that delicious sweet rose i fell in love with – only to find that there were barely any hints of it anymore.
It had turned into a very masculine, warm and woody scent, that reminded me much of what i really disliked about CK IN2U… Both of these scents have amber as base note, and i think this is the note i really can’t stand.
I really wish that this scent didn’t go masculine, woody and slightly pungent on me, and would just remain a sweet oriental rose instead. This would have made it truly amazing, to me.
UPDATE: The woody and slightly masculine undertones of this fragrance have really grown on me, and I now really love this perfume as a whole!
Would still recommend for those who don’t mind a rose that doesn’t stay sweet all way around, though.

i am from the UAE and this perfume smells exactly like any old lady here (grandmothers) NOT trashing this fragrance or anything, actually its the opposite. its very appreciated scent here where i live.
To explain my statement, in old days until now women in the UAE used a traditional homemade fragrance called “Mukhamariyah” its made by my mixing grinded Saffron as the main ingredient, with Oud oil, rose oil, musk and Jasmin oil. after that they keep it in an air tight container in the dark some even bury it in the sand for a month until the ingredients ferments and blends together. this mixture is then used as a fragrance for the hair and behind the ear. using insence “bukhor” compliments it very much.
so to me, Tom Ford brought us Mukhamariyah in a bottle. WOW! I am glad other people from around the world are appreciating these ingredients blended together!

This scent is a little darker and stronger than I usually go and I have to apply it very sparingly or else I find it overwhelming.
I was at SFO and was a bit early for my flight to NYC. There is a new cosmetics store beteeen the 60s and 70s gates in the new area of Terminal 3. I wandered in to look at the Tom Ford lipsticks and then got sucked into smelling the scents. This one I sprayed directly on my wrist because I loved how it smelled on paper. At first, I didn’t like it on me, it felt too masculine and dark. But on the flight I kept sniffing my wrist and falling harder and harder for it.
So of course I went back and bought it when I got back to SFO.
It’s not a daily wear for me, and I haven’t had the intense reaction to it that I experienced with my sample spritz, but I’m still glad it’s in my collection. My husband thinks it’s sexy so it’s kind of a date-night or bedtime spray for me.

A wonderful sharp and powdery tangy rose. I don’t detect the coffee as I do in Montale’s Intense Cafe (another rose/coffee combo). The opening to this is very beautiful; sweet and warm. The dry down is a little more typical powdery rose. This reminds me a little of Bond no 9s Harrod Rose, which is tad more powdery, and Kate Moss Kate which is a colder, sweeter rose. I would love a full size of this one day, but unfortunately for the time being will have to make do with my 1ml sample.

Juicy rose and saffron laid on a comfy bed of patchouli. Coffee is quite sacrified to my nose and does not stand out as I wish it did (I am Italian, coffee is a religion for us ;P !!!).
On my skin it starts as freshly stingy to then warm up into a wonderful voluptuos sandalwood and amber drydown.
I love it since it is a bold unusual rose with a lot of character which could suit men too.
Café Rose be my next signature scent? Uhmmmmmm the two top candidates are Café Rose and Portrait of a Lady by Malle, and telling the truth I am more convinced about the latter which seems to be more modern and present.

On me, I get a lot of rose. She is center stage with a lilt of pepper and saffron. As it progresses an incency amber patchouli brings her to earth. The coffee scent is mild and is a slight undercurrent.Lasting 6 hrs and still going. Beautiful drydown. If you found Calligraphy Rose way too much but still seeking a rose centered fragrance, this is a very smooth, gentle idea of a unique rose.

Oh my, this perfume is a coffee lover’s paradise! I‘m not usually into gourmand scents (Thierry Mugler’s Angel for example), but today I surrendered my inhibitions to this gorgeous love potion called Café Rose. For me this fragrance captures the true essence of an Italian coffee bar along the canals of Venice. First impressions are of a rich Mediterranean espresso, combined with luxurious rose…then drying down into a powdery coco.
The combination of elegant floral with grounded coffee beans does for me what chocolate and strawberries could not; it made me feel cozy, comforted, happy, and adventurous. I’m not sure how Tom Ford does it, but there is a feeling of European coffee shops during the fall, with sparkling lights, cobblestone streets and fresh roses blossoming into the night.
Overall a delicious concoction in an innocuous little bottle.

Ohh now you’re talking. This juice is beauty in a bottle. But not just an ordinary beauty…no! Instead, it is a beauty which will transport you to another world. From the House of Tom Ford, this is a work of art and strikes a cord in my heart as I am a lover of Arabian Parfumerie. This scent is deep and delicious, yet at the same time it is fresh and feminine. Very graceful and very seductive. It is the smell of an exotic beautiful woman in a long black gown walking in the summer heat of night. Her trail scent entices all around her who wonder who this mysterious femme is.. This is a unique perfume. It is strong but never overpowering. I think Mr Ford got this one just right..spot on. I really appreciate this one..a fragrance to be loved and cherished. Perhaps something to use on special evenings or whilst in the company of the one you love. Very romantic and womanly…
