I recently got my hands on black sun shower gel. It does indeed smell like armani code, which is great at this price point having in mind of alternatives. Also guys and girls, lets not pretend like armani code is some sort of art masterpiece that is worth examining piece by piece, it is not that complex, typical comfortable to wear run of the mill crowd pleaser.

So I made a 100 ml blindbuy after researching this juice for years. Was it successful? Find out below.
The thing is, I am in mourning after Armani Code went through one of the biggest reformulations I have ever seen. It went from being a rich and creamy blend, perfectly balanced between sweetness and spice. Suited for young and old gentlemen who wants alluring masspleaser that goes perfectly in any formal or semiformal occasion, as well as a night out.
Why am I speaking about another fume? Obviously, this is recognized as a close cousin to Code. And after Code went extinct by Armani doing the old cashgrab of watering down a bestseller to introduce a stronger version of it, I just had to find a substitute since I loved the original so much. The new one is like an aqua version of the original(!). I am not exaggerating. And I am sad to see folks noses not picking up on this.
-I have done countless comparisons with my vintage code juice to establish this reformulation-
What to do then? Well, I have tried many perfumes that people said were similar to code but to my dismay, there were not. Mostly they lack the creaminess. Zegna is not at all the same feel. To be honest, neither is this a perfect replica. Original Code is still the king.
BUT, this is the closest I have smelled since the original. I have learned that perfumers often re-use accords and themes in their creations, just like other artists. So if you want Code, you should look into who did the original.
Salvador Dali Black Sun smells divine to me. It is about 85-90 % vintage Code, and I can live with that. ItS close enough to be percieved as Code, it retains the spirit of the original.
I love the bottle and name too. Price is great so I can recommend this to people who wants to relive the common smells of guys in a night club 2004-2007. Very alluring and scent.

I bb this up before even reading any reviews. Tried it and found that it’s a woody/powdery deal. Top note of Dr. Pepper; bottom note woods mostly pine/cedar. Strong stuff..lasts 8-12 hours of blue collar labor , on my skin.
After some time I picked up a bottle of Armani Code to find they truly are quite similar. But AC stays linear for most part, while BS shines in the dry down. In retrospect, I gotta say AC suits a true formal attire. BS would be more casual.

I recently discovered Armani Code just blindly spraying something on my wrist at the mall. Then I walked around for 2 hours saying, “That smells fantastic”. I think it is a versatile day/night, winter/summer fragrance and I bought a 10ml sample. I’m a bit disappointed with the longevity but I just reapply. Reviews and internet readings suggested that Black Sun is a similar product at a bargain price so I made a purchase. Now I sit here typing this with Black Sun on my left forearm and AC on my right, or is it the other way around. I can’t tell but they both smell fantastic. Both are a wear on your day off, or wear at work, or in the evening, anytime of day or year home run. Black sun is the value of the 2 so that’s what I’ll wear.
Update- The next morning, AC is all gone, Black Sun still hanging in there 12 hours later.

Yes it’s similar to Code (I haven’t tried Ultimate), but I don’t get the strong olive wood element. It’s not too sweet and there is a bit of “laundry musk” to it, but otherwise I don’t think there will be any surprises here (I didn’t get much geranium, which tends to take over a composition, so that was a plus). It goes on very strong so it may be best to spray when you can wait about 20 minutes or so before venturing out into the public. I’m not a big fan of this type of composition, as there is nothing emphasized that I really enjoy, but if you want a Code type of scent for super cheapo prices (mine cost about $12 total for 100 ml tester) I don’t think this one will disappoint you, so long as you are realistic.
UPDATE: After 2 or so hours the vetiver started to emerge, and I was thinking that they added a hint of Encre Noire! It really helps provide some contrast and makes it interesting. I’ll keep my bottle until I give it at least one more wearing.

    @Santos89
Dali Black Sun predates Armani Code Ultimate by at least five years; whilst they may be similar, Code can only be described as a Black Sun clone – NOT the other way round.

Smells more simillar to code ultimate. It’s interesting, because ultimate was released only in 2012, this one 2007. Good choice for price if you like dark tonka/ balsamic woody scents. I prefer to Seduction in black (more similar to code original).

For what it cost me it’s not bad at all.
However I only use it on a day where I want to blend in and smell pleasant but not remarkable. It’s quite generic and drugstore-scent like.
The vanilla and the tonka bean notes take the lead in this one but it does not last long. It fades away in an hour or two.

This is often refered to as an clone of Armani Code. I will agree to that claim.
There are some minute differences, but overall the smell registers to me as Code.
The woody notes are amped up a bit, and it’s slighly less sweet, but overall is shares a similar feel to Code.
I consider it an excellent copy of Code, and at the price it can be had, will buy this instead of Code.
Longevity is decent, 6-7 hours with good projection.

I like this one. Dont know why, 10 minutes after initial spray it smells like Dior Eau for men…weird, but i swear, its so close, at least on my skin..
Overall, nice delicious fragrance. And yes, it is dark.

I get the comparisons to Ultimate Code. It’s a lighter version but the DNA is similar…

This stuff is too sweet for me. Doesn’t really smell like cologne as much as it smells like I just sprayed vanilla extract and sugar on myself. Even one spray on my wrist has been making me get bad whiffs of it all day. Kinda cloying — definitely a night scent.
Absolutely try first. Disappointed blind-buyer here.

This is a nice sweet spicy-cool fragrance much like L’eau de ST Dupont or even Cerruti 1881 Black. It’s also surprisingly complex, powdery, and has a sexy masculine demeanour. I really like the silver monochrome box and the beautiful (100ml) bottle. I get the name Black Sun (i.e. sun eclipse) as this fragrance is simultaneously warm and cool, bright and dark. I also especially like the way the sun motif is indented into the bottle, because when it catches the light from certain angles it really does appear as though the sun is being eclipsed with a visible corona which is clever and apt for the name.
It’s usually to be found at a cheap price which is quite appropriate as the drugstore-scent quality of its ingredients disappoints, giving it unexpectedly feeble projection although the longevity on the skin is acceptable at around 6 hours. A shame really as it had the makings of a winner….
In summary, it’s pretty good, but marred by its lack of sillage, meaning that I doubt I’ll miss it when I finish my rapidly depleting bottle.
(What a great and accurate review Labaloo’s is by the way! One of the best on this site IMO)

I like to think of the period from 1985-2002 as the “classic period” of Salvador Dali perfumes. It was during this period that their offerings were innovative, and bottle-designs were original and based directly upon forms imagined by the artist himself. At the time, I remember quite well that these fragrances were only *slightly* less in price than those by designer labels such as Chanel and Gucci.
From 2004-2009, the company most-decidedly headed in another direction entirely… bottle-designs became reductive (e.g.: the concave sun appearing on this bottle is a simplification of the form used for ‘Le Roy de Soleil’- 1997), and in fragrance-design, they decided to “play it safe” by contracting perfumers to summarize popular trends, distilling them into something with *guaranteed mass-appeal*- pretty-much everything Dali was, in his lifetime, against.
Since 2010, the company seems to have repented (somewhat) and is again changing direction by trying to shake off that recent image, and celebrating its classic period (they have much potential, and I wish them the best), but this fragrance falls squarely into that 5-year period, when the label became associated with “drugstore scents”, and from which they will have a hard road out of…
‘Black Sun’ is very-pleasant; it is well-done, with good sillage and longevity; it is definitely a good bargain if you’d like to smell good, feel sexy while wearing it, and be confident in knowing that other people will enjoy it. It smells like a mix of popular, coumarin-heavy, fresh-spicy-woody-oriental frags for men from the late 90’s/early 2000’s (Pi by Givenchy, Armani Code, Armani Code Black, JPG Le Male, YSL Body Kouros, Bvlgari Black, etc.), and it unabashedly rides on their successes with little originality of its own.
    It is what it is.
I own a bottle, and I’m not ashamed to say so. But let’s keep it in perspective: no-one ever says “wow- what is that you’re wearing?!”, when I have it on. It gets mistaken for other frags constantly … (i.e: “you’re wearing [blank], aren’t you?”) I wear it when I’m feeling more-reserved and want to blend in with the crowd, when I don’t want to be distracted by the acrobatics that an oddball niche might be performing. And in my book, that’s OK.

There’ll always be scents that smell like another, and just ‘how’ similar is subjective to a person’s nose.
For instance, I think this is similar to SEDUCTION IN BLACK by ANTONIO BANDERAS… so there you go.
    Anyway…
A very nice sweet/dark fragrance. I like it a lot.

Salvador Dali Black Sun is indeed basically a rip off of Armani Code (aka Black Code) – very similar scent, very similar name, came out three years after the huge selling Code. I love it! Maybe if there were more classy replicas like this the price of things like Code would drop. To my nose Black Sun is a touch more aromatic and Code a touch gentler and sweeter, but could I tell them apart blind? Nope. Neither is all that exciting but they both smell really good. Very safe scent for a first date, a crowded room, etc. Love the Black Sun bottle too – much more interesting than Code, which looks exactly like a bottle of deodorant to me (if I were sleepy, I would try to screw off the cap and rub Code in my armpit).
    10/10 for free market activism
    6/10 for scent
0/10 for originality (ironic that it bears the name of such an original artist)

Ok so we’ve got another winner here. I’ve spoken or commented on clean scents before but this one certainly falls in that league. From opening to retiring this man is confident & fresh. Similarities are there with AC though I reckon Black Sun has an edge over AC and for the buck, come on man! So many positives to this amazing juice.
Yesterday I had a lady colleague constantly trail me and start story after story till I questioned her behavior & I was thrown back as to her response. If this beauty is that good, I’ll have to know when and where to wear it.

This scent is a wonderful one, its affordable and smells fantastic. Amazingly quite long lasting for an EDT….(even more long lasting that some of the EDP i’ve own!)
It starts off as fresh/spicy with a hint of creamy vanilla and dries down to become quite warm, spicy and aromatic…Very pleasant and versatile fragrance, can be used in summer but favors the cooler climate a bit more.
Lasts over 9 hours on my skin, even after working in a restaurant where theres food scent everywhere, it still stays on my skin and can be clearly noticed after a whole days of work.
Highly recommended, affordable yet not very common, long lasting and versatile.

Black sun recently got this one because it intrigues me cause of the similarities to armanis code. Well I both sprayed them and compared them side by side I don’t have a full bottle of code but I have a 10ml sample of it. I have to admit the difference is pretty much unnoticeable lol. The only difference I’m detecting is that code is just a bit more spicier that black sun you really have to decipher it to notice it differences but on first smell to the end almost identical. both are very good fragrance. Those of you who have not smell code its a sweet spicy fragrance. Longevity both are equal max 6 to 7 hours for me moderate Sillage for both. The big question is which one to get.? For me that’s a no brainer for the price its obvious although black sun is not a popular one if owners of code knew about this one I’m pretty sure they will switch to black sun a solid release as with armani code. Love both but I own black sun.
    Longevity 6 to 7 hrs max 7/10
    Sillage poor to moderate 7/10
Uniqueness 6/10 copy cat of the original nothing unique here
Overall smell 8/10 love it very good scent
Price vs quality 10/10 for below 35usd for 100ml bottle can’t beat that.
Versatility a good all year round scent IMHO even summer nights

I like Armani Code and when I read the reviews of this one, I thought welll what the heck, let’s try it.
I must say I can understand the link to AC and I like this one too and it’s not as expensive. Longevity is good too.

I bought this for my boyfriend just because I adore Salvador Dali perfumes for women. It turned out we both really like Black Sun, and so does my dad 🙂 So I had to get him one too.
I agree it’s similar to Armani Code but more complex. You get more for less money. Can’t go wrong with this one 😉

I find it very interesting when people can immediately ascribe a smell to a personality type down to age and social class (for a lack of a better word). I suppose I tend to evaluate fragrances in an isolated manner, because I’m a woman in my mid-twenties and I wear this with aplomb. It’s a bit more of a daily scent than an occasion one, though: very wearable but not necessarily heavy-hitting. I like the opening because it’s especially bitter and aromatic; the ‘shiny bergamot and refined cardamon and sensual vetiver’ claim is not misleading. It gets sweeter with time, but at least it’s vanilla and not some other saccharine horror, so even if you shy away from sweet scents, I think you may find it tolerable and even pleasant. The drydown is somewhat characterless, so at this point I usually either refresh or wash off, depending on the circumstances. Much better impression on clothes, a subtle, understated but sophisticated trace is quite noticeable for a few days for sure. All in all, it has that chameleon quality in that I have no doubt that I’d perceive in a positive light on an individual I find intriguing, but deem it unremarkable on a posed businessman; it complements and completes both impressions well, so, on the latter it would be something expensive, expected and unobtrusive in the background, and and the former – something attractive, noticeable, tempting. So, if I had to say one thing, I think calling this fragrance versatile would be apt. It makes me feel clean and balanced, though not at all in the traditional ‘clean smell’ sense.
P.s. I think it’s superior to Armani Code. Subtler, better composition, made a much more lasting impression on me. It is, of course, a matter of taste, but don’t feel discouraged by comments comparing the two.

Oh come on.Really?I mean really? This stuff is IDENTICAL to armani code mixed with some xeryus rouge…I found armani pretty generic so i did xeryus so this one follows the same path. Its more aromatic and better than those two but still this one is a ittle above average as it IS still a pretty generic mens perfume.I like wearing more unique scents and not this one which is like wearing axe brut and st8s.As i said its still BETTER and more refined than both armani and xeryus…Im not dissapointed with my blind buy as i bought it dirty cheap but i wont be using it as a go out scent maybe as an air freshener or something. Its not a bad perfume at all its just me i find it kinda uninspiring…
But my bro when he smelled it, was totally blown away and said that it was my best perfume out of my collection.Go figure
Scent:6/10 a little above average cause its better thn armani
Sillage:Pretty good but for the first hour 6/10
Longetivity:Cant really tell as i sprayed it 2 hours ago but it seems like a 5 hour scent.(update)The frag lasted about 6 hours going veeery fainted in the 7th hour.So the same applies here,a bit above average longetivity 6/10

Come on people, the idea is to review Black Sun, not to compare it with something that costs 3 or 4 times more.
Sometimes price doesn’t guarantee a better product.
I’ve ordered a bottle blindly, based on the notes. Will be back with a review of this black sun.
UPDATE. Well, it’s time to eat some words. It has little differences (the gorgeous olive blossom in Code, for example), but not enough to think of it as a different one. Black Sun can be used to save Code for special occasions.
    ***

  25. :

    3 out of 5

I agree that it is very similar to Code, but there are differences. Code is very citric, softer and sweeter, and does not have the aromatic character that Black Sun does have. They are classified in different categories and I think rightly. Code is in fact more oriental, and Black Sun more aromatic. I do not find black Sun that sweet. I tend to like oriental fragrances better, but I think that Black Sun it amazing really, very well achieved. It feels really complex. I find it disturbing in the nicest way. The aromatic side (mostly basil) of it seems to impart a freshness which gives the scent a really well balanced counterpart to its sweetness. It feels really twisted. I think it is in the same league as Laguna, the same level of complexity and sophistication. A personal detail, I much prefer the scent of basil to anise. Despite what some people say, salvador Dali keep these days marketing some really good scents, although I do not think the same about many of their scents. I find Black Sun and Laguna really top of the top. I am glad I got to try this fragrance which is really difficult to find in shops. And I bought it quite cheap.

Although this fragrance doesn’t smell 100% like Armani Code give it about 10 minutes to settle in and BAM! You’ve got 99% Armani Code scent. It really does smell nearly identical and seems to last a heck of a lot longer than Armani Code and it saves me a lot of money! Never buying Armani Code again. Love this scent.

Very nice, very cheap scent. look at all the reviews saying it is basically Armani Code, which costs roughly 8 times the price.
Nice opening, followed by a nice dry vanilla scent. Not sure I would pay full price for it, but the $10 I bought it for? Bargain

An affordable and more complex take on a common place scent. A scent which although copies classics, beats them..
0-2 mins- Hmm, not sure, could be a little dated
2 mins- 4 hours – It is hard to describe the smell in detail, but what is easy, is that this is 95% the same as Armani Code- but better with a little more intense aniseed and very minimal violet smell(not listed). Lots of hints of maculinity, in a dark mysterious male way…scent liquid somehow should be purple in colour…Projects a little better than Code and is more creamier. This is also the same smell as 212 Sexy but this is better than that also. It is great stuff
4 hours – 7 hours- up to 6 inch projection at best yet still better than Code and 212 Sexy
Projection better than the classics but still not great, so I wear this when in meetings and on training days.
    Quality due to affordability

Lasts 8 hours on me, very good result for such cheap fragrance. Good for cold weather, projects quite well, people seem to like it. Will use it for the nearest date, we’ll see then how seductive it is 🙂

On the floor of a forest you can experience the power of the sun even though the canopy shields its rays. Nature provides an environment for mysterious creation. The sun warms resins and ferns and herbaceous growth. A place of tranquillity. A place to energize with the power of Black Sun.

Just received my bright new 100ml bottle of this magic juice yesterday.
Normally I collect 30 or 50ml bottles to keep the feeling all the way and not become bored of them too soon, but for this one I made an exception.
I tested Black Sun months ago and I liked from the first sniff because it strongly reminded me of Armani Code which I had in college.
Now, after a whole day wearing, I won’t be tendentious saying that is entirely a clone of Code because is not!.
What I perceive is more likely a resemblance with KennethCole Black and Givenchy V.I.FreshAttitude (strong basil- cedar-black incense combo) in the beginning, followed by sweet-spicy notes (elemi-aromatic sweet resin, tonka-bean, vanilla) reminding JPG LeMale and P.P.Minotaure, ALL surrounded by a strong gourmand Armani Code feeling.
I really can’t explain this resemblance because none of the notes listed here match the ones for Code (could be the cedar-incense-sage-vanilla combo?).
Anyway, I’m very happy with my new fragrance and I can’t wait to use it on cool days & nights out w. my friends.
So, if you like K.C.Black, Giv.V.I.FreshAttitude or Armani Code aromatic type of scents you will enjoy Black Sun (at a very reasonable price, also!). Btw, sillage and longevity are above average (6-8 hrs) so more thumbs up for this one. My subjective rank 7/10. ☣☣

Black sun have somethnig more than Armani Code.
    Code is so much spicy…
Black sun is a good mix with Code + 212 Sexy Men + something soapy+ a bit of Minotaure’s powdery…
    So… a good perfume…sintetic, but good!
