Where is the rose? This is a conventional and decent rose-patchouli-oud fragrance, similar to TT’s Gold Rose Oudh but without the depth and richness. I recommend trying aforementioned fragrance and a few Montales before settling on this.
It’s $225 in the frosted bottle, but about $70 cheaper in the new clear bottle (because the revamped Illuminum merged their former HAUTE & VAPORIZOR collections and matched the price)!

Resembles Montale’s oud based scents A LOT, but this is slightly simpler. On my skin the dirtyness did not emerge at all, just the sharpness of syntethic oud – very bold and strong. Drydown came a bit too soon, BLACK OUD settles to a sharpish oud based scent with bits of freshness of citurss (think of air freshnerer kind of citrus, sharp and overly fresh).
Stays on a long time, radiates heavily. I did find this nice as I enjoy oud, but given the huge variety of this kind of scents…BLACK OUD does not stand out in any way. At least not for me.
5/10

This isn’t bad at all. Well, I did get my bottle for a song, had I paid full price I think I may agree with nada (I certainly do regarding some of their other offerings especially Piper Leather, the most unleathery of leather fragrances!) but anyway I digress. My main grumble is that this doesn’t last very long. It is BOLD, loud, sharp, exotic, sour, expensive smelling, and opulent. but then it disappears. Which makes it ideal for an evening scent (you wont wake up smelling of last night). It is definitely very sour, and very exotic. It doesn’t smell directly of a place (you know how some things smell unmistakably INDIAN or Saudi or whatever) though it definitely has a profile of far-arabie, though perhaps the painting is of a fair sunburnt man in colonial gear posing on a wicker chair in a desert rather than of an actual swarthy native resplendent in headscarf with sword in hand, as it were. I really do like this, though wish there was discernible civet in the base – I feel I’m taking their word for it. But aside from a fairly linear scent that doesn’t hang around for too long, this is actually quite nice, if you like sour oud scents. Definitely unisex, I could imagine wearing this to a gallery, a rooftop party, on a yacht, or out and about in the summer of an evening. I wore it to the office today and whilst I am a believer that there is no such thing as an office-appropriate scent, I did feel a bit daft turning up smelling so extravagantly so early in the morning.

illuminum has been the biggest disappointment in recent history…:)

Rosewater and spices. Smells like turkish delight, woodsy with a hit of a lot of spice. It is marketed as unisex but I think this would be better on a man. I like it – high praise indeed :-P. It’s pricey though and I am sure there are similar ouds out there that are much more affordable. That said, I am pleased I have it and I think for winter this will be a hit. It smells cleaner than I imagined, I have a number of ouds and they tend to have an element of “dirtiness” to them. This is sort of a virginal version but lovely all the same.
Oh, hang on a minute there buster! I have been wearing this for 20 minutes now and the dirtiness is emerging. I think this will get my affection the more I wear it. Similar to the love/hate relationship I have for Serge Lutens. This is a perfume that will need to be worn over a few days/weeks before it really melds with the skin. However, it’s a really well balanced and worth waiting for the oppulent dry-down. Actually, I like it more and more as the time goes on. The first blast should be largely ignored as it’s fairly fleeting.
