This was a limited edition in 1999 for the 150th anniversary of the opening of Harrod’s. It was sold only there and I was lucky enough to visit it and secure myself a bottle. It was highly expensive and the Guerlain counter had no tester, just the same 50 ml bottle you would have bought, a splash umbrella bottle in a wonderfully elegant Harrod’s-Guerlain box.
The scent was a thick tuberose-jasmine combination with hints of apricot and vanilla and a sublime sandalwood drydown.
It was costly, I did say, yes it was, but for the money spent you had much more than what you get today for other Guerlains: a drop of Belle Epoque was enough to accompany you throughout the day and night.
Immediately the tuberose and apricot welcomed you in a beautiful sweet embrace; then the apricot subsided and the jasmine-vanilla hug joined. At last a luscious sandalwood appeared and composed a seamless path with tonka beans and the two white flowers.
I used it till almost the last drop. I have kept a little juice just to remind myself how beautiful this was. Wearing Belle Epoque was a joy to be experienced, not a treasure to be jealously kept.
This was truly a masterpiece, a scent made with perfect artistry and serious ingredients, not a fleeting ghost like those that too often surround us.
INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL
