Description

Barolo is a masculine fragrance inspired by the Nebiollo grape and good wine. It was created by the perfumer Clement Gavarry. The top notes are citrusy, spicy and fruity: bergamot, mandarin, lemon, strawberry jam, rhubarb, saffron, black pepper, carambola and fig. The heart is floral and gourmet: rose, iris, geranium, black currant, chocolate and vine. The base is oriental – woody: amber, cedar, patchouli and vetiver. Barolo was launched in 2009.

I’m glad I bought a 100ml bottle of this before O Boticario discontinued this. It smells DELICIOUS. Its combination of notes are very unique and work together in a surprisingly unique way. It’s a warm fragrance appropriate for cooler weather and evenings. I’d say it better suits the mature male of sophistication and class.
It’s currently still available for sale on a select few websites, but prices have skyrocketed since its discontinuation. So if you’re even contemplating of getting this, get it now before it’s gone for good.

I thought I would like it looking at the notes. I was excited to test it so I went to the O Boticario Store and sprayed in my skin. Not what I was expecting. Although the notes here seem to conjure in order to bring a whole new olfactory experience, in fact Barolo is just another sweet fragrance with no sufficient character to stand out from the other market offerings. You smell it and just think that you’ve already smelled it a couple of times in other colognes. Contrary to other members, I found it to be synthetic, specially through the middle and base notes (the base notes smell like cheap lipstick, as a matter of fact). The opening is just ok, slightly short of being generic.
Another thing that annoys me a bit is that this is another cologne marketed as “for men” but is kinda feminine at the same time. It looks like it is the rule nowadays…
This is too far from interesting to be worth buying a bottle. Stick to Malbec, it’s way more stylish, masculine and original than this one. Unfortunately, it’s way more popular too.

This isn’t too sweet and it does have a wine-like quality, but the base has some generic wood and amber kind of thing that you’ve probably smelled many times before (Gucci Pour Homme 1 kind of idea, apparently). The wine aspect does last a long time, so it is somewhat unique overall. It’s not “synthetic” or unbalanced, but the note separation is poor, though that may have been the intent of the perfumer. I could imagine a wine aficionado enjoying this fragrance, and it’s good for cool nights out. I will need to try it again to see if I get better note separation.
UPDATE: I found that I had to give it an extra spray or two to get the most out of this one. Doing so, I get a nice Dior Homme type drydown, only here you get some mild wood and an herbal/wine/tea type quality, which creates really good dynamism. This solves the Dior Homme problem, as I call it, which is how to make what others call the “lipstick accord” more interesting and pleasant.

Barolo is a more restricting fragrance than Malbec. It has an exotic combination of contrasting cool/warmer elements due to the mix of citric/fruity/floral/winy notes.
I’d say Barolo is much more sophisticated than Malbec but it’s not suitable for any kind of skin and mine is one of them.
Another very good job by O Boticário, it lasts long on the skin and it has a good sillage (Malbec’s sillage is more intense). It works better than Malbec in countries with hot climates. Complaint: the strong appeal to grape scent.
    8,9/10.

It was a good surprise when I tried at the first time. Serious, smooth and it smells rich. The wine and all the woods make it classy and the chocolate creates a quickly sweet atmosphere. Good price. A greatfully surprise from O Boticário colognes
    On me:
    Sillage: good
    Longevity: good (4h+)
