Description

Fragrant explosion for men is coming with a new creation by Marc Jacobs in July 2010. This is the first fragrance for men from the collection Bang, advertised by Marc Jacobs himself.

Bang was created for a “contemporary guy, who, even if he isn’t young, has a younger spirit.” Jacobs created the name first and development of the composition in cooperation with Coty followed. “I wanted to do something that I would love.” Said Jacobs. “I particularly like spice notes, especially pepper, so that became a starting place.”

Bang was created by Ann Gottlieb of such notes as black, white and pink pepper. A heart is enriched with masculine woody notes, while a base includes elemi resin, aromatic benzoin, vetiver, white moss and patchouli. The fragrance arrives in a metal flacon (50 and 100 ml EDT), 150 ml aftershave balm 150ml, 200ml body and hair bath and 75 ml stick deodorant.

The fragrance will appear exclusively in Bloomingdale`s and in Marc Jacobs’ official shops in July and will be available worldwide from September 2010.

Advertising campaign is very attractive. Marc Jacobs poses nude on a silver bed made of aluminum foil, with a large perfume flacon between his legs! Jacobs appeared in the campaign after his business partner Robert Duffy suggested him to advertise his first perfume for men by himself. “My immediate reaction was, I don’t know. But then I came to see that it made sense. Men’s fragrance, unlike women’s in a certain way, is very personal.“
Bang was created by Ann Gottlieb and Yann Vasnier.

PEPPER! This is a great scent and what I like about it is that it smells very different vs other mainstream colognes that are out there today.
Longevity- This cologne lasts 7-8 hours and have been very impressed with it.
Would I buy this again? Yes, this is a very masculine scent that deserves more attention. This is especially good in the fall/winter. Trust me if you want to smell different get this one no one else will have it and it smells great!
    Notes- Pepper (but not bad!)
    The Gents score 8.5/10

The opening of this scent is a blast of pepper, both black and pink, spicy and sweet at the same time. It’s wonderful, in my opinion, but I can see how it might be too sharp and invasive for others.
If you like this opening, I have bad news. It dies out within 10 minutes. No joke, no exaggeration, these top notes disappear faster than any top notes I’ve ever experienced.
What’s left is the powdery scent of benzoin and resin working together with the “wet earth” notes of vetiver and oak moss, which, in combination with a whisper of leftover black pepper, somehow combines to create a kind of light cinammon scent. It smells very much like the cinammon dry down of Halston’s Z-14.
The projection is very weak after that first 10 minutes, and the longevity also leaves much to be desired. It’s a skin scent in less than an hour.
A very exciting and beautiful accord, no doubt, but it needs to last about five times longer to be worth it.

Man!!!! I cannot tell you how much I love this fragrance. This has been a favorite of mine for many years. This is now the third bottle I’ve owned and I’m still blown away by how good it is (for my tastes that it)
BANG! Is a bone dry, woody-spicy fragrance with lots of really nice character. The blend of pink and black pepper is great, it’s got the perfect backing of dry woods, and there is a faint clean smokiness that comes through. It’s everything I love in a fragrance!
To me, this is a cross between: Creed Spice and Wood (although that is fresher and a little lighter due to the apple) and CDG Wonderwood (wonderwood is richer and more complex) there is also a similarity to Montale Intense Pepper but the Montale drydown is really different and also their pepper note is totally different.
What I like best about this fragrance is how easy it is to wear but how great it smells (and different to what the majority of designer fragrances bring to the table) the times I’ve worn this I’ve been complimented every single time.
It goes with casual clothes and also is great for work and even great for a date with someone special. It’s also a fragrance you can layer with other fragrances (for instance for a really complex concoction you can layer Wonderwood with Bang and it’s great!)
This and Wonderwood are my signature scents and I will forever love this fragrance.
I wish longevity was better but it does better on clothing than on skin with that. Silage is a medium too although sometimes I can smell this radiating from me (when it’s hot and humid)
If you like dry woody-spice this is your fragrance!

love this, could not love this more–and every positive thing downthread is true. but the longevity *sadface* is like 16 minutes. i do not require 18 hour nuclear bomb scents, but i’d be happy if i could smell it 90 minutes later. 🙁

Love this fragrance, reminds me of poivre samarconde from hermessence line by Hermes.
I knew when I started seeing a bunch of thee at Marshalls for 19 dollars that it may be discontinued or a bad seller. The I heard it was discontinued. It’s a shame because it has an amazing after shave type of woodsy peppery scent and masculine beard conditioning vetiver feel that’s very comforting

Pepper, pepper, and more pepper. I think Marc Jacobs is a fantastic designer and he’s made some great scents, but this isn’t one of them. Yes, it lives up to the name BANG, but in the worst way. It’s an olfactory assault on the nose of pepper the overpowers anything else. It gave me a headache. I think the bottle design is some of the most creative I’ve seen among men’s fragrances, but the scent itself is not for me.

A very generic black pepper, fresh spicy and woody scent. The name and bottle are the best things about this fragrance and everything else is just plain boring.

Marc Jacobs Bang, yes, it is a pepper bomb! It smells very masculine and is all about the pepper. I get decent longevity 6-8 hours, and good projection for the first few hours. I do receive compliments with this one and it smells really good. Plus, to use a pun, if you buy this at a discounter, it will give you bang for the buck. Great fragrance and great price.

It’s awesome. It’s unique. It’s peppercorn goodness done right. If you like spices as much as I do you will love it… it’s different than anything most people around you will be wearing, and people will be intrigued with it. Wear it if you want to stand out for a moment. Honestly I don’t find it too strong. Yep, it’s a fanatic blast at initial spraying but it does tame out quite nicely.
    Happy Sneezing!

This is my very 1st dive into this fragrance house. Found the big 100ml bottle at TJ Maxx for $25.
Like the person a couple of reviews below mine…
They’re spot on. This fragrance is legit ALLLLL about pepper. Literally theee single most peppery fragrance I’ve ever smelled in my life. In that sense…I also would consider it quite unique. Unique…however, unique does not necessarily mean complex. It’s actually an extremely simplistic fragrance. Imagine taking the empty bottle of cologne…and throwing in the pepper notes and alcohol…and you have imagined exactly what this smells like.
I’m very on the fence about this one.
I absolutely HATE the initial blast. It’s way too much to my nose. It’s so peppery…it’s border line obnoxious.
However…I kept smelling my wrist every couple of minutes and after the scent calmed down for about 15 minutes…it started to smell like it had tamed itself a bit and I could smell the masculine appeal to this fragrance.
Deff is not a fragrance for me…but I can still say it’s somewhat pleasant (after that initial 15 minutes.)
I would give the scent itself…
    a 5 or 6 out of 10.
Longevity – About 3-4 hours depending on amount of sprays.
Sillage – A good 2-3 feet for the first hour and then about half the distance for remainder of the life of it.
This deff has to be worn on the right person and deff should not be oversprayed as it may be a unique fragrance…but I would NOT classify it as an inoffensive fragrance. Not at all. Careful with this one guys. And also to add…this is NOT a safe blind buy. (I blind bought this fragrance and will probably only wear it 1 or 2 times per year.
I must say however…the bottle is BEAUTIFUL and JUST as original as the scent.
    Overall Score – 6/10

Love this fragrance and it’s not really mea ruined or praised. It’s smells classically manly yet modern. Think of a modern classy man wearing vetiver rolling around in hay and peppers!

This fragrance is all about the peppers.
It smells like pepper all the way through.
I consider this one to be quite unique.

I smell hay, hay everywhere but I dig it. Fantastic bottle.

There are a fair amount of dislikes on this one but not from this guy. I am a big time pepper lover. Bang is very much to my liking. Many of the pepper fragrances that I have tend to be softened with either some citrus or freshness of some sort. Bang is pure pepper smell on the open. Almost to the point of sneezing. I know this sounds bizarre but I really dig that.
The bottle is unique. Like dented, twisted metal. Totally adds to the masculinity of this fragrance. This fragrance is strong in all aspects. Strong vibe in the box and bottle presentation and strong pepper, wood and earth on the nose.
Bang is definitely a fragrance you will really enjoy or really dislike. I’m not sure there’s much gray area on this one. I’m in the really like/love camp.

    @PerfumeKing14
You say you don’t use male perfumes because they are just “too much” but your signature fragrances are Mugler’s Angel and La vie est belle? 😀
That sounds a little bit paradoxical…

  18. :

    5 out of 5

Pow, pepper, spice blast on opening, not too sweet. I love that part. Unfortunately, the magic fades pretty quickly on me. This might work better if used on clothing.
I don’t get the comparison to Terre d’Hermes, as there is no overripe orange citrus here, in fact, no citrus at all.
It’s hard to test sillage with a sample, but this is certainly not strong, which is a shame, as I love the scent.

I love this fragrance. Definitely a nice bang when you initially apply. I don’t get the best longevity out of it but I’m getting at least three hours on a hot day. I’m not one of those guys that gets great longevity from anything usually. Btw, this isn’t the best frag for a hot day if you are outside sweating your arse off. People may not know where your funk ends and this thing starts. It lives on the dark side.
Definite woodsy/peppery overall tone. After the initial blast of the top notes, one of the peppers drops away and leaves the other. I’m not sure which one is the dominant but it’s definitely there. I see that pepper is not listed in the bottom note, but that’s not what my nose is telling me. I can continually smell the vetiver, patchouli, moss, and wood notes. The particular wood note I’m getting is guaiac wood.
I haven’t heard anyone else say it, but I think this is similar to Azzaro Visit on the dry-down. At least it serves the exact same type of purpose and situation that Visit would also be suitable for if you like that one. I am also a big fan of AV. Cheers.

Similar base of Montane red Vetyver. Bang is more versatile if you can cooperate with the pepper Bang in your face thing.

  23. :

    5 out of 5

Bang reminds me of a lighter version of Terre D’Hermes. However Terre D’Hermes is richer and smells like it was made of higher quality materials and is less peppery. TD’H also lasts longer and projects better. If your on a serious budget, Bang is fine, but if you really want something in this vein that’s done to perfection, go with the Terre D’Hermes, especially the parfum concentration.

    Overall: 4.25/10
    Here’s Why: Spicy, yes.
Warm, I can’t quite put it to words, but No, not warm.
Metallic, synthetic, spicy (like table pepper), short lasting, BO smelling, musky, unrelenting pepper, what seems like a tiny bit of woods, more pepper, then nothing.
Gone. Every trace of this scent gone in an hour.
    Odd. Not a ‘nice’ smell.
    on me at least.

I like it, it would stand out in my collection. it’s sort of like a darker version of CK euphoria or Ermengildo Zenga Uomo. More concentrated goes from thin but then quickly hits you fast like a bullet with spicyiness. Usually everything is black or red in my collection for themes of scents but this will cut through it all and make me appreciate my other colgones after going with this one or back to another the next day.
just hoping it lasts longer than the drakkar noir I just ran out of.

Terrible ! Smells like plastic and cinnamon, with the worst sillage I’ve ever seen ! Do not ever buy this thing before trying ! Sincere advice

  28. :

Pepper, pepper and then oakmoss in the drydown, if it could be toned down and softer it would be ok.

  29. :

    Hit and Run…
Surprising (given it’s name), Bang! is more pensive than party.
On impact, The tone is serious, and all-kinds-of-peppery. A rosy pink peppercorn, reminiscent of cinnamon tic-tacs (the only hint of sweetness here), quickly segues to a more subdued Heart: Simply, cedar and vetiver dusted with black pepper and mellowed by a dark velvety resin in the background. A smudge of oakmoss lends a moist acerbic tang – adding pungency and depth. Like an olfactive sketch… a dark “inky” vetiver, tingling with pepper. It comes across both polished and raunchy; natural and un-natural; edgy but brooding. I dig it.
Bang! is uncomplicated, unconventional, and uncompromising in its sense of style. Marc Jacobs made a bold move with this “mature” and unlikely candidate (in the 2010 marketplace) – amid a designer landscape of child-pacifying confections that pander to Gucci pocketbooks with bubble-gum taste. This entry may not have made a dent in that market, but in my game…
    BANG! …hits a home run.
    LONGEVITY: 7/10 (in base)
    PROJECTION: (Fall temp): 6.0/10
    ART/CREATIVES: 8.5/10 (bottle,composition)

I had a bottle of MJB when it was released. The pepper top notes are almost over-bearing. But an hour later, the woody middle notes shine thru making this a winner in my book. Picked up another bottle at TJmaxx, sprayed it on, and in less than a minute, the entire scent was gone. I returned the bottle. So just a heads up if you see it discounted in the US.

Ann Gottlieb is impressive with this and the very different CK Shock Him. I get much better longevity and performance than many of the reviewers here. This is a very strong fragrance on me. The wood smells of oak, to my nose, with some balsa, maybe, or something similar. Nice vetiver- and elemi-types of freshness, too. This is good!

  32. :

Great for everyday wear, but be warned…the comments about weak longevity are spot on. Even so, it can be found on the cheap to make frequent applications acceptable.

At first blush, I loved this fragrance. I tried it on and bought a bottle for my boyfriend. I loved the boldness and breadth of this fragrance, but after a couple hours, it seemed to lose its punch, and smelled of lower quality than upon first impression. I returned the bottle to the shop unopened at the end of the evening. I was disappointed that the broad scope of the fragrance was not long-lasting. Maybe with re-application, this would have been more appealing to me, but I hate having to re-apply fragrance to winnow out the effect. After much initial enthusiasm, this one is a thumbs down for me, sadly.

A keeper that reminded me of Terre D Hermes. Sprayed one on my right hand and one on the left. Definitely similar but Hermes is better. But Bang has more pepper and Hermes has a stronger citrus note. Found this one for 10 bucks on sale. Hermes last longer but I am liking Bang as well.

  36. :

    5 out of 5

I like this one. It smells to me like dirt and gun powder, but in a good way. Its very masculine and unlike anything else on the market except for maybe Coriolan Guerlain (which also has gun powder notes). I must say it starts strong but does not last long on the skin at all. It def must be worn with the after shave moisturizer for lasting power. Found the whole line at Marshall’s (balm, spray, deodorant, shower gel) for a steal. A great buy if you can find it at a discount retailer. Also, all Marc Jacobs bottles are too artsy and hard to hold. This one is no different and you can’t tell when you are running low due to the opaque bottle. Still worth a try if you haven’t experienced it yet.

  37. :

A very short lived pepper scent. It’s gone within 2 hours without a trail to be sniffed. Very dull and discounted everywhere. The notes say woods are present but I don’t smell em. You will need an atomizer for sure with this.

NO! Just no! I sneezed after spraying it. Shortly after I got a headache. For about 30 minutes I could not get the smell out of my nose. It seemed to irritate the inside of my nose. This is unwearable!

I loved this for me not my man. I also love the blatant sexuality of the name. Wish I had bought it when I saw it at duty free 30% off. I dont remember exactly what it smelled like but spicy and earthy are the lingering scents. And I remember thinking the name Bang is not quite right – more of quiet kiss.

  44. :

    5 out of 5

MJ’s Bang is a very interesting perfume – but, I must say it, not a very, very original one: Bang will definitely remind you Terre d’Hermes (the way that Byblos’ In Black – created in 2011 – will remind you MJ’s Bang, created in 2010).
Nevertheless, it is a well blended and a truly atractive scent. If you’re a “woody aromatic” kind of nose, Bang will be an explosion of pleasure on your chest.
I dare to say that a special woman will know how to use it also, as an unisex elixir.
Rather light, but with 6 or 7 shots you will have it on your skin for half a day.
Deeper than Byblos In Black and somehow sober & more mature that Terre d’Hermes, MJ’s Bang remains a genuine revelation for those in love with the spices (as I am).
    A deserved 8,5/10.

  45. :

Pencil shavings, bright pepper, cedar, and ink? Something earthy, like graphite. I would have to spray 6-10 just to make it last 6-7 hours. Super light. I love this fragrance even though it is a linear scent. Perfect for the office. Not offensive, very clean and masculine. I wish it was stronger.

  46. :

I love the teak wood in this fragrance. It reminds me of a teak wood chess set that mad dad has had for the entirety of my life. When I smell it, I become reminiscent of the times when I was younger and my father would teach me how to play and how throughout my lift, he would break it out and we would play to see if I had gotten better.
Because of my associated experiences with the scent, BANG makes me think of experience, intelligence, the careful refinment that can be found in art as well as humanity. It reminds me of my elders who are always happy to share their thoughts, feelings, memories, and experiences with me. These shared ideas are an inheritance that is more valuable than money and is something that cannot be taxed.
This scent embodies WISDOM itself. It is a scent that a philosopher would wear.

  47. :

I want this to be my signature, it just has something powdery about it that I don’t like.
It’s the right pepperiness in my opinion but it lasts like 30 minutes.

BANG!!! This is mega spicy. The extreme end of the dry peppery scale and really quite unique in how far it goes with the theme. I had expected Spicebomb to be like this but I’m kind of glad it wasn’t and more heavy with sweeter spices like cinnamon and anise.
I do like this fragrance a lot because its so hardcore but not sure when I’d wear it? Just briefly on the bottle…it’s a really bizarre shape and stands out on the shelf not sure I like it though.

My guess is you have to have the right body chemistry for this one, and you have to live in a cold, damp place!
My boyfriend uses Bang in wintertime. His body temperature makes lava jealous. Somehow the pepper never gets overwhelming on him. But he can’t use it in the summer, then it’s too much.
On my boyfriend Bang smells like juniper wood. A whiff of spices and pepper and then a soft solid base of aromatic mysk. And it lasts.
He is in his early twenties. Every other boy his age uses linear fresh scents, and some are too shy to even smell anything other than soap. Bang is really a one-of-a-kind scent, that sets him apart from the other boys, makes him more of a grown man.

This scent has great potential to becoming my signature! There is something about it that I can’t get enough of. It exudes confidence, masculinity, and a bit of cockiness. People complain that they think the pepper is too much. Well to me, I think it’s just fine. Great for a suit&tie event. If this had a Tom Ford or MDCI label on it, people would be raving about this without a doubt. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.

I really liked this one from the first time I smelled it. Perhaps it´s the heavy amount of pepper that catched me. Perhabs its the combination with the resins and the vetiver. I Don´t know.
But it stands out from other perfumes from the last few years and that´s an important thing for me. I can get sick of a fragrance easily, if I am forced to smell it everywhere or is just to common.
The only notes I can clearly catch are the different pepper notes and the vetiver. I can say, there is more, but I can´t name it without having a look at the perfume pyramid.
The blend of the notes creates a sexiness, more rough than tender. I can see that it´s not for everybody but to me it´s a perfect ad to my collection of often worn fragrances.
Only thing I´ve got to critize:
Longevity and sillage are moderate to low.
Bottle empties quite fast, because I take much of it and respray it after a while

  59. :

    3 out of 5

You can’t judge a fragrance by its bottle any more than you can judge a book by its cover, but that doesn’t stop me from trying. This one comes in a bottle that looks like it was inspired by junior high school metal shop – very clever. This is what attracted me to the scent.
It starts with something periously close to pepper spray – this quickly dissipates and moves onto woodsy notes that smell a lot like a pine board. Then, in less than an hour, it’s almost entirely gone, probably leaving purchasers to wonder, “Why did I buy that?”
They really need to ratchet up the longevity and projection on this one. Bang! It’s gone in a flash.

This is not a bad fragrance, that depends on the person’s nose. You can either love it or hate it. I love it. It smells “different” from the ordinary stuff sold in the stores. Yes, it has a strong pepper smell, but I really like it. To me it is not cloying at all, I can handle it, and it lasts very long. One of the few designer juices that I love.

I’ll admit I was drawn in my this fragrances amazingly peppery opening. Wow that opening! But the dry down, wow what a let down. My wife actually told me I smell like food and not good food. I can’t disagree. This smells less like something I want to smell like and more like something that is somewhere between auto mechanic and expired spices. I got it for $20 so I figured no big loss. Well it’s so far from my liking its now going up on eBay. They got the ‘BANG’ part right, but they forgot the ‘Fizzle’ afterward.

I got a wiff of this fragrance for the first time today at Nordstrom and I hate it. The pepper is too intense for me. I can say I didn’t test this on my skin, so it might develop into something good. That top note of pepper however, is a deal breaker for me. Much respect for anybody who can withstand that pepper opening.

I recently bought this, after the first use it has become my favorite scent. I love black pepper anyway, so to me this is simple and so sensual. My wife loves it on me.

This fragrance is: pepper, pepper, pepper, vetiver, the end. If you love pepper, you will love this.

I love this fragrance. Very warm and manly. I love pepper notes on scents because they always promise. When I saw this at Marshalls for $19 I stocked up. Then stocked up on the box set the selled around X-mas for $29. I cant get enough of this and keep sprayimng myself which sadly Im wasting (maybe cause I know I stocked up) but the reason why I keep spraying myself throughout the night is because it disappears on the skin 🙁 Poivre Samarcande by Hermes is very similar with longer lasting power.

This fragrance is really good, starting with pepper, but in few minutes it changes to vertiver and I bit more, it desapears…Sad cause the beginning promises..

A big dose of pepper and woods with what smells like Frankincense. It is a masculine and very straightforward scent with no hidden extras, pepper and woods all the way.
If I switch off my analytical brain and go by the smell I do like this as its straightforward and what you smell is what you get through its duration. Perfect if you are looking for a casual masculine scent with no frills just pepper and woods.

Opening smells like one specific dusty note I often detect from bouquet of flowers. Just pure dusty, like you are sniffing the dry grinded plant. Then the powder faded away, and mild citrus, dreamy floral and core herbal notes unveiled. Woody part is quite warm, reminds me slightly of terre d’hermes.

AAACCKKK!!!! This is just way too much pepper. While I love spicy scents, this is just overdoing it. It might be acceptable if it developed into a better scent, but all you get is the pepper and after around two hours it’s gone. It doesn’t seem like very much thought went into the making of this scent. It’s one of the few scents that I actually dislike.

I was truly repulsed and disapointed when I fist wiffed this. If “Bang” is what they were going for “Bang” is what they got in the worst possible way. I cannot immagine anyone wanting to wear this or thinking it was young, fresh clean. It smells dirty, offensive, and slighlty vulgur.

Bang is a real strong olfactory opener but that soon passes. It’s a love it or hate it fragrance IMO. I love it. The spiciness is pleasant to my nose, but my preferences, as with all others, is based on how well this fragrance agrees with my chemistry and culture. I feel that this product has received bad reviews because it was not given a chance to evolve. I highly recommend that folks give it another try.
Update: I’m still loving it! This could very well be my go to fragrance.

I picked this one up cheaply and have to say it is a fairly good fragrance. I feel, however, it is misnamed. There is not so much of a bang as a fizzle, or maybe a pop to this one. It starts off with the sharpness of peppery notes, though these are for my tastes a little understated (Oscar by Oscar de la Renta does it much better). After a very brief time it starts to smell like a subdued version of Terre d’ Hermes. Nothing earth-shattering here.

Bang is the quintessential designer-grade olfactory essay on pink, black, and white pepper. The opening is a sturdy pink pepper and patchouli accord, which gradually segues into black pepper with a touch of spicy white to even its rough edges. There’s a rather bare wood note in there, very dry and nondescript, and the scent smoothly fades into a peppery wood.
I think Bang smells very nice and it is easily wearable by men and women alike. However, I’m a bit chagrined by Bang’s lack of dynamism. Put simply, Bang is boring. There could be a touch of pine or juniper to brighten the pepper, or even some citrus. Also, I don’t get the sneeze-effect that others do. The pepper notes in Bang don’t challenge my sinuses, and I expected them to. Still, a competent scent, and with a really cool bottle to boot. Worth trying, if only to smell how pleasant pink pepper can be in a designer perfume.

For the record, I DO like this frag a lot. Anyway, today I opened a can of Dr. Pepper and it smelled so familiar… like the Bang I sampled yesterday! Something in this EDT smells like Dr. Pepper in the most delicious way possible.

I like this – as a lover of pepper in my fragrances, I was attracted to Bang by Marc Jacobs. It came in a pair-purchase of two fragrances (the other being YSL M7!) so I had little to lose.
It goes on strong – with loud pink pepper dominating, then transitioning to a blend with white and black pepper mixed in. I thought this would be more synthetic, possibly even a mess – it is hardly such and very well-done, in my opinion. Definitely a polarizing scent, but this is actually well-composed and has both very good longevity and projection. In addition, it could be a scent that layers well. All-in-all, this will (ironically) probably get more wear than the M7 bottle it came with that I was after, but that is a more “special” scent the exudes sensuality. This is just plain good, tasteful & fun!
Kudos to Ann Gottlieb for this creation. The wood notes come in after the first 10-15 minutes and seems to “sm
