Just recieved this today as a sample with an order (And Adam was very generous with the samples!). A very nice rose, combined well with iris. I’m a fan of rose/aoud scents, but do find the aoud to be overpowering at times. This offers a nice middle ground of rose and woodiness, where the rose is never overtaken, only mellowed by other notes. Very smooth scent, with no sharp edges. Well done!

Aphelia is one of the most beautiful rose scents I have ever tried. It is natural, luscious, sweet and silky. It is a stunning portrait of a crimson rose, alive and beautiful in a simple but elegant frame of other notes.
The scent opens with a gorgeous strong rose mixed with a touch of spices and fruits layered on soft and earthy woods. The scent has complexity but the rest of the notes never take the spotlight to take attention away from the rose. The composition is done so well that I perceive the scent as one beautiful, vibrant rose, alive and natural. The scent becomes sweeter and rosier as time progresses. The rose is indeed in full bloom in the heart notes and its aroma is divine. The dry down is cozy amber with a dash of vanilla and iris. I still smell soft echoes of a rose in the dry down. The scent is close to the skin at this stage but the longevity is reasonable (at least 5-6 hours).
Aphelia fragrance comes in a form of a concrete (solid) perfume and I have to admit that I was skeptical at first. After trying it, I have no hesitation to recommend it. I love this scent in the form of concrete perfume. I think that solid perfume texture is more close to the pure parfum / perfume oils and it gives this scent its velvety, smooth structure. I love it.
Overall score 9.5/10. Smooth, beautiful, silky rose in full bloom – close to perfection for me.

When I first received Aphelia from Lord’s Jester, I was surprised. Not only that Adam had sent it to me for my opinion, but that it was as good as it was! I tend to roll my eyes at the thought of yet another “rose in a blender” perfume (to borrow a term from my dear friend Shera Pop). This, I assure you, is NOT one of “those”. I was intrigued by the name: thinking it was Aphrodite meets Ophelia, or something like that. But Adam reminded me that “aphelia” is the Greek word for (and personification of) simplicity. Aye, and that it is!! Aphelia is one of those perfumes that is dominated by a single type of note; but with the other things that are mixed into it (by a skilled hand and discerning Nose) that bring out not just its intrinsic beauty…but all aspects and facets of the theme itself. I tend to prefer lilacs or hyacinths to roses (in perfumes anyway) but Adam and Aphelia have made me stop and take a “second sniff”, as it were. And, it’s really true…one should take time to STOP and smell the roses!
Let me begin by saying that I am not the biggest fan of perfume solids, either. In fact, before receiving three previous Lord’s Jester solids, I had actually gotten rid of all perfume solids and creme perfumes from my collection. These ones, however, I absolutely adore!! They are amazingly silky, melt at the touch of a finger and spread divinely on the skin. Comprised of jojoba, beeswax and other natural ingredients, they become (without any greasy residue) “one” with your skin and delightfully scent the area to which they are applied and last for a very impressive length of time. On first opening the tin of Aphelia, I was greeted with the most heavenly aroma of roses, sweet and blooming, on the vine. Then, full roses with a touch of woody spices and a delightful fruitiness. On applying it to my skin, it reminded me of a rose just opening, as the bud split and the first petals emerged; innocently fresh, yet budding in its sensuality. An aroma of green leaves surrounding it, and a feeling of a warm spring wind blowing made me sigh. As it dried some, the roses became fuller, more dark and somewhat sweet (but not cloying). A most skillful blending of not one, not two…but THREE types of roses and rosewood give this perfume an almost “country” feel, and the addition of aruacaria (an essential aromatic harvested in New Caledonia in the South Pacific) imparts a woody balsamic green floral feel to this perfume, reminding one vaguely of freshly cut and still drying hay, almost like the roses were growing wild in a wooded area. If scents could be seen, my forearm would be glowing with a gossamer aura colored light pink to dark salmon and rising in sprakling, but steamy waves. This fragrance is indeed simple, but by no means linear. She does not change all that much, but she does evolve subtly. In the final drydown, rose still dominates yet a cool green aroma is balanced by a sweet one that becomes something almost oriental (but not quite). There is something else, in the base notes, that is neither sweet nor floral and is just charming. They say every rose has it thorns, yet I detect nothing sharp nor prickly here; just a simple and almost raw beauty, elegant in its simplicity. Aphelia is as charming and simple as the girl next door, but every bit as magical as a goddess…yet as down to earth as you or I.
I refer to this scent as “she” throughout this review, but there is no reason a man could not wear this; as it has enough spice and woods, alongside the roses, to please anyone and a wonderful drydown that blends cool iris, soft vanilla and ambergris into something ever-so-gently exotic smelling but neither “incensey” nor overly feminine.
Sillage: good
Longevity: very good
Overall: 4/5
I was never really all that much of a ROSE guy, as many of you already know. I remember telling Adam that on first sniffing Aphelia-I actually os-magined Aphrodite, the goddess of love itself, reclined on a chaise lounge in her palace on Mount Olympus. She was surrounded by admirers (men and Gods alike), blonde tresses falling over one bared shoulder and being cooled by fans made of peacock feathers and waited on hand and foot, being fed ambrosia and offered golden goblets of nectar; while Eros (Cupid) played with his bow at her feet. I expect THIS is what the goddess of Love would smell like as she walked among men.
This is a scent that captures and enthralls one, making them drop to their knees and worship its source with a song in the hearts and a twinkle in their eyes. Tender, but sensual and so very seductive, yet never vulgar. This is a scent you wear and it does not wear you…and that (in a rose scent) is refreshing and unique in and of itself.
