Description

“Inspired by the memory of the summer holidays we shared with my grandfather, Morning Chess mimics the ripe, green lushness of summer on coastal Falkenberg. There, in a summer cottage, my grandfather, with his two sons, would pass hours battling wits over a chessboard. Sweden would save all its light for those summer moments, endless, bright mornings. The grassy greenness is light enough to hint at the evergreen sharpness of the distant winter air.” – a note from the brand.

Morning Chess by Vilhelm Parfumerie is a Leather fragrance for women and men. This is a new fragrance. Morning Chess was launched in 2015. Top note is bergamot; middle notes are leather and galbanum; base notes are patchouli and black amber. The nose behind this fragrance is Jerome Epinette.

Love the weird green smoky element with the superneon pineapple note!

Do not underestimate the pineapple note in this if you are not generally a fan. I was hoping for green, leather, and smoke, but couldn’t get past the fruit.
Was looking for an unexpected and robust scent with a trustworthy and honest heart, but just ended up grossed out. Kind of like the dud of a man I bought this for.

This is a less fruity, smokier version of Aventus. Truly excellent.

I am completely mesmerized by this fragrance. Perhaps the most distinctful leather scent I’ve ever smelled. This is the type of fragrance you want to wear on a chilly Sunday with piles of books, fireplace, and bourbon around you.
So the introduction: a robust bergamot, smoked out like Papier d’Armenie. Almost incense infused. There are heavy greens that play with this bergamot as well: like fresh cut grass, a little hay, but nothing too damp. I could even say galbanum.
Then there’s that beautiful leather. It’s like one of those 1940s leather gymnastic equipment. Or a crackled beat up amber colored couch in a flea market. There is a bit of that massoia bark that was lit in a fire pit too.
Finally a bit of benzoin, waxy resin on the dry down. It’s quite clear that this fragrance is purely intimate and smart. Casual and reclined. To be enjoyed by new love. Sillage is pretty tranquil. Noticable in the room but not offensive. Definitely a day time fragrance but can be layered on with Dior Oud Ispahan in the evening to bring out that patchouli and rose. I highly recommend this fragrance. It’s luxurious but not pretentious.

Mix Aventus and Comme Des Garçons Man 2 and you get this.
Too smokey for wonen to wear.
Women: please DO NOT wear this.
Also too smokey fir women to like on a guy.
    Pass.

This scent is incredible. It might be my 2nd favorite fragrance after Bois Oro (which is nothing like this). It’s currently competing with Bois d’Orage for that #2 spot.
It’s a perfect blend of fresh citrus and the forest with a deeper leather underneath. There’s something magical about it that could work for any weather or occasion, casual or formal. Though I find Oro more intoxicating/sexy and addictive, this is a far more flexible fragrance, that I don’t see really offending anyone but would also never bore them. I think the average person would have a hard time picking apart the notes, due to the nice balance.
It opens with a burst of candied sweetness to grab attention, but immediately settles to reveal herbs and damp earth. A bit of a stringent quality comes through, like oregano oil but not as overpowering, that reveals some asceticism of the wearer, even though this fragrance reads very expensive to my nose. And instead of the green coming through in a hipster, hippy, or lumberjack way, it conjures a man in his 30s or 40s in a suit with a short, neatly trimmed beard, who doesn’t spend much on himself but when he does he makes sure he invests in something of quality.
I need to smell Aventus to see if it’s related much. I believe this could work for men and women, but definitely leans more towards the masculine side.
It is very long lasting with great projection too!
edit: so I smelled Aventus today and they are very recognizably similar, but I’d say with Morning Chess there’s more green apple in the beginning and much more leather in the dry down, so I much prefer Morning Chess. I’d also say the projection and duration are better than Aventus, which is already impressive in that realm.

Scent – bergamot, leather & patchouli.
Season/Time of Day – I prefer to use this one in the warmer months, day or night.
    Projection – I did get noticed, I didn’t get a compliment.
    Longevity – I get 12hrs consistently.

This is a more woodier leathier version of Aventus.
Now that Armaf’s Club de Nuit Intense Man is out, Armaf basically made the same thing as Morning Chess but for 1/3 the price.

Fresh, green, and a bit fruity on the opening. Calms down into a fresh airy leather. Like your sitting in a giant field of mint and greens while wearing a brand new leather coat with a citrus drink in hand.
    Absolutely love this scent.

I’m blown away by this. Like a better version of Aventus. It’s fresher and darker.
