If only this had no watermelon!

NICE scent except it smelled exactly like a MOISTENED WIPE FROM ‘WETONES” which we have here in Australia and I mean exactly… so now Im pretty put off… I only realised that today after I sprayed it generously (after god knows how long since I wore it last) and when I got home I realised why it was so familiar after getting a moistened towel – weird co incidence.
If I’m honest though reviews here are either too generous or too harsh.
This is a BRIGHT CLEAN FLORAL AQUATIC.
Its cheap, a bit dated (so claims this is ‘the best’ or a Masterpiece is a tell tale of narrow experience or someone living in the past) as is this series and some what generic and unchallenging. It has a strong pungent start for 30 – 60 minutes before drying down to skin scent with an occasional trail and lasts 3 – 6 hours.
Its great to put in your gym bag, car arm rest or work draw for a hot summers day when you need a refresh if you like clean florals. I don’t get the tobacco scent but everything else in the pyramid is pretty much there.
Its a slightly unique or left of field Aquatic – however I now won’t buy another bottle but if someone offered one I’d gladly take it.

It really is a unique and amazing fragrance. Ultra fresh, fruity, floral, soapy, light and pretty long lasting. A sublime Summer perfume and a masterpiece.

Happy too see a unique summer fragrance without any citrus/marine note, but this is a terrible perfume. Very very oldafashioned, outdated and has an unpleasent smell. The opening is very loud, but fades away very quickly…and has a terrible smell: nail polish remover combined some bugspray.. very very synthetic… The watermelon and the currant notes just barely detected.. The mid notes are terrible too. Nothing fresh or clean smell, just an oldafashioned, unisex, boring mix of flowers, with a blast of soapy effect. The drydown is far better then the other notes, but who cares, if the first 2-3 hours is terrible….I’m so dissapointed… unique stuff, but… bleh…
    – classic spring/summer, hot weather scent
    – sillage is moderate, longevity is 6-7 hours
    – try before buy

    This thing smells fucking awesome…
It’s different, meaning if you have over a set number of bottles in your collection…things start to smell the same…
And you look forward to a different scent…It’s a nice and wonderful surprise to find a fragrance…a new scent, that you clearly don’t have in your collection…scent wise.
Thank you @RobbieX for making me pull the trigger on this one.
    I love it…
This is a must for the spring & summer.
But it’s strong enough, that i can see it being worn in the winter, with no problem.
It has great staying power: It’s now 7:30AM i sprayed this on myself a little after midnight and it’s still here.
I’m in my office just taking a break…
And for some reason i can still smell this thing.
    No olfactory fatigue, nice…
I have a solid scent bubble for the first four hours of three feet… Now it’s a couple of inches above the skin.
But i know once i start moving around again, it will catch a second wind.
The Watermelon, Bergamot, Black Currant & the beginning slapped me in the face…In other words…it caught me off guard…Then it settles down, next the floral notes & Cardamom..combine with the cedar & tobacco rocked me to sleep.
    Mannnnn!
This i can see it being a unisex fragrance…Women can pull this scent off as well.
But i’m happy that i have this gem in my collection.
Next time there’s a company get together next summer, this will be on deck with me.
Perfect for a beach vacation or doing everyday errands.
This is something that will help you relax and slow down.
I used five sprays…both wrist, back & front of my neck, chest.
    Will I buy this again?…Yes.

No offense to those that like this, but I cannot stomach it, and I don’t say that often. Its in your face, loud, acute and feels like the same type of scent of car air fresheners that give you a pounding headache, very artificial.

  11. :

    Casual synthetic berry aquatic.
This could be a product from Paco Rabanne. The most fitting situation I could picture would be a beach night club in the summertime. A mess of too many notes, which actually makes it too complex for me somehow. To describe it is hard, the closest I can say is a sweet, peachy, berry, fruit cocktail with watermelon, a little tobacco and floral notes. It smells very chemical and slightly oily with a touch of salty melon. I dunno.. a fruity floral with sweet freshness? – I’m talking saccharine and lots of calone.
BTW, it actually somehow reminds me of Creeds Millesime Imperial without the ambergris, so if you’re a fan of that, this is a much cheaper alternative.

BEAUTIFUL FRESH CRISP LIKE A MORNING DEW….NOT SO MUCH CITRUSY I WOULD SAY ITS MORE FRESH FLORAL AIRY CLEAN SCENT
    AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING
AND IT HAS REAL OAK MOSS EXTRACT THAT GIVES DEPTH AND BEAUTIFUL SILLAGE

At first sniff I was disappointed. But after half an hour it turned into a beautiful floral fragrance. I felt strolling in a French garden. Its projection was moderate but longivity was praise worthy. People seemed to like it. I also received comments from two charming ladies. But try before buy as it is a bit different fragrance. Not so common like other aquatic perfumes.

Nothing from this “house” has ever blown me away or left an impression.
I got this for $5.00 – nearly full bottle at my flea market yesterday.
Not too much of anything going on here…light aquatic …..NOT INTENSE whatsoever. LOL. Almost I joke I think?
Not enough personality for me and there are probably 50 other aquatics on the market that are superior to this .
    Blah.

I do not smell neither blackcurrant nor watermelon – smells that I love, and which was whole reason I blindly bought it based on reviews and notes.
Lucky for me I sprayed it on paper before trying it on my skin.
All I smell is 50% seawater, 50% urine. Maybe something else is under the surface of that mess… I wasn’t brave enough to investigate. It is true for opening, 30 min into drydown, as well as 1 and 2 hours into drydown. A bit less urine smell after 2 hours (I guess rip current takes it off shore?), but still unpleasant stinky mess. The only good about it is longevity and silage, if it could be called good in this case. I walked into the room I left sprayed paper in about 9 hours lated, and I still could smell it. Had to throw it away.
I’m not a big fan of marine perfumes to start with, but this definitely will make into top 10 of worst perfumes I ever bought.
Few here for some reason call it fresh and cool. For me it would be one of the last things I would associate with either. More like rotting seaweed on the beach on suffocatingly hot and humid day.

Insense Ultramarine is a fresh fruity, spicy and aquatic masculine scent. Deep and complex, you cannot judge it with the first sniff and you must be patient to explore its complexity. The combination between fresh aquatic notes and fruits with a spicy (slightly powdery feeling) aura makes it special and delicious for hot weather especially for summer evenings. The soapy feeling is very-very weak almost invisible.
The longevity is above the average, full 6-7 hours and the sillage is moderate but distinguishable in one meter radius. So, go close to people and they will feel it. I highly recommend it for summer and spring.
The most distinguished notes are aquatic notes, watermelon, black currant, iris, less powerful magnolia, tobacco, mint, bergamont and carnation. The other notes are visible but weak.
I have the feeling of a summer evening wind from the sea embellished with fine fruits, maybe the aroma from nice fruity cocktails in a beach bar, fresh, vivid and playful, is the DNA of this juice. I love it!

  22. :

Salty floral that’s the best way to describe this one.
Too be honest I had higher expectations for this one which I didn’t meet.
It is a bit synthetic I can detect the mint and a little tobacco.
There was no watermelon in it also I can’t judge if there is a black currant in here cause I haven’t smell one before.

  23. :

Still having half of a bottle of this. It is so maturely fresh and sharp, and the sharpness stays hours on my skin (even longer on fabric).
I don’t know the “aquatic” sense at this juice. The dry down is a little bit sweet, on my father’s skin it’s getting sweeter. Unique. Loving it much.

How come the original Insense gets so much praise while this one gets overlooked so easily and even scorned? C’mon they are not that far apart guys, it has the same DNA but with a cheap 90s synthetic aquatic overlay that ruins it completely. While 100ml of this costs $38, the original can cost up to $140!! Want to know what the original insense smelled like? Well, this one is 70% in the ballpark. It begs the question, why didn’t Givenchy discontinue the flanker instead?

I was hoping to like this frag when I bought it as a decant sample. I tried it on a few occasions, but it didn’t win me over. For starters, the opening smelled synthetic…like plastic or some other chemical. After the opening, in the later stages, the scent just drifted in and out. Sometimes I could smell something, and at other times, there was nothing. When I could smell something, the scent was either “okay” or “meh”. To my nose, it didn’t surpass the other aquatics in my collection. As such, I didn’t finish my sample.
But hey, perhaps one of Insense Ultramarine’s subsequent flankers could be a winner.

  28. :

    5 out of 5

At first I didn’t like this fragrance. It reminded me of the smell of hairspray – lots of alcohol and a hint of a scent that dies quickly.
I bought it in the winter and maybe that coloured my opinion of it.
Just pulled the bottle from the back of the shelf and tried it on yesterday. Summer heat has made all the difference. It’s flowery and clean, yet still masculine. It’s definitely a better fragrance than I originally thought.
Insense Ultramarine is, for me, exclusively a summer scent.

I have a negative review here. And just to be fair, each of our brains/noses are made different, for a person with a complex brain to talk about a perfume as complex as this one is,,,I say fuggedaboudit. But we love to read reviews, don’t we?
Weirdly enough, I saw an ad or an article about this perfume not long ago in a fashion magazine, and it has an insane popularity in my country. When I purchased this, I didn’t know much about notes, I still don’t, but anyhow, the good reviews and this ocean images were enough for me to make the jump to buy the bottle.
    it was a helluva mistake.
Now I know a thing or two about fragrances and if I take one good look at the pyramid, I can tell that this is most defenitely not for me.
I wish not to smell this headache/vomit inducing bomb in a bottle ever. Someone before me put it quite nicely, yes, this is nightmarish stuff. RUN THE OTHER WAY!

This just arrived this morning, and I have been wearing it all day. I am in absolute love with it. I feel foolish for not purchasing sooner. It starts off with beautiful florals, like a walk in a garden on a beautiful spring morning. Very slowly it transforms, I have had it on for about 6 hours now and it has arrived at the gorgeous cedar/aquatic base.
Very nice projection and very happy with longevity.
I completely understand those that do not like this, its not for everyone! I think most who wouldnt enjoy this prefer stronger, definitive masculine fragrances.
    IMO this is easily unisex.

  31. :

    4 out of 5

The only Insense worth owning is the original, non-Ultramarine version with the golden yellow juice and the silver-colored cap. That fragrance is absolutely spectacular and worth the effort to track down. That’s also the reason why it’s hard to find and expensive when you find it: People who KNOW how good it is have bought most of it up. If you find it (and it’s often on eBay,) grab it. Once the remaining few bottles of it are gone, they’re gone for good.
Note as well that there are two reformulations of the original Insense and they’re both weaker versions (and likely tweaked for the worse) from the original. Yes, Virginia, there IS a difference.

  32. :

Are all these people out of their damn minds? I’m 100% convinced Givenchy fills these bottles up with nail polish remover. Anyone who says it doesn’t smell like that is being dishonest. After 30 minutes, you’re left with what smells faintly “blue”, the sort of airy-ness and oceanic mix that some people describe it as on here. But be warned, this smells incredibly cheap and chemical. Thankfully I was able to sell it right away but I still get nightmares from that first whiff.

  33. :

    4 out of 5

A fruity aromatic blend, its opening is so clean and fruity nuances seem melon, green part of the watermelon.
In seconds blend subtle semi powdery tones, all transparent rather than having lipstick consistency, I think the lotus flower do it.
The base leaves more mature level, almost woody,if it has something of tobacco, it seems that is the leaf and i get also a barbershop light kind of vibe.
Great perfume, modern with some refined touch, seems to have something traditional in it, a slight memory.
    Rating: 8,5/10

  34. :

Pure love, very big versatility if you’re talking about ages (and even gender). I can see some classy man wearing this but also a high schooler – college kid. Defenitely should be labeled unisex, a woman could pull this off easily.

  35. :

Im not a fan of clean aquatic colognes, but I don’t mind this one. Its fruity-sweet with a little kick of mint which makes it tolerable for me. While its nothing out of the ordinary, the dry down is powder soft and clean. Perfect for the office or a weekend brunch. Older and younger guys can wear this one with ease, so for that I give it a solid B.

  36. :

A headache in a bottle for men. This scent comes off very dated it is strong with white floral notes ( a little too much for my taste) and on top of that you have a piercing iodine aquatic note. I just can’t believe this horrible child of Insense out lived the parent.

Invigorating and intoxicating. Sea, summer wind and salt. A blend of flowers, leaves, spices and wood. Refreshing with strong sillage and longevity. A classic by Givenchy.

  40. :

    3 out of 5

starts kind of chemical and yes…synthetic a lot…I swear I felt some kind of cleaning chemicals with it and I cannot notice the so called melon note….at least a natural one….after an 30 min-1 h. it turns a bit more floral…anyway… it keeps something generic and old-school smelling I kind of deslike….I do not see it any better than nautica voyage so…do expect great things from it…but I guess few people may complain if you wear this one…I believe that are better smelling aquatics on the market…not my first option for sure

  41. :

    4 out of 5

A lovely potent, floral, fruity, sweet and fresh scent. Longevity and silage are very good. I’m sure I can detect a rose note in there and the Iris is very noticeable. When it dries down, it is a really pleasant, very sweet juice. Ultramarine Insense is definitely one of the nicest and most potent of Summer scents. 9/10 for me.

  42. :

    3 out of 5

One of the best summer frags. But like kenzo pour homme you have to wait for a little bit to realize the quality of this fragrance.it is refreshing and not overpowering so it is ideal for daily use.it gives me the sense sea combined with a distinctive sweetness.it is a unique but also a safe scent. On my skin last about 7 hours and the sillage is quite noticeable. Ending Givenchy makes some nice fragrances the last 10 years but in my opinion this one and Monsieur de Givenchy remain the best.

  43. :

    5 out of 5

Concur with reviewer below that you have to be patient because it sprays heavyily synthetic but within 2 minutes you get a very charming fruity-floral aquatic. Heavy black currant makes this a beachy-summer variation on Silver Mountain Water in my eyes. Dig the shocking-marine blue juice. Fun in the sun!

  44. :

    3 out of 5

I re-visited this today and I’m glad I did. Yes, you have to be patient because it goes on very strong and synthetic. But after 30 minutes it turns into a floral masterpiece. I do not get any fruit/watermelon notes. On me, it’s a straight up fresh floral. Very nice for hot Texas summers .

Guys, look what happened to me with this one. When I smelled it for the very first time some years ago I liked it but not loved it (it reminded me somewhat a dated pefume, fresh but a bit dated)so i did never add it in my buy or wish list and i totally forgot it through these years but since then i have smelled hundrends and hundrends perfumes became from varius decades and that helped me to get some more clear opinion now how to appreciate scents. I smelled it again yesterday and I felt absolutely in love!!!!! It cooperated so wonderfuly with my skin and the result was magical.Don’t forget that has launched during the golden decade of perfumerie. It is amazingly fresh but deep at the same time,it has superb quality of ingredients that make it so outstanding and not a typical summer blue jouice that are somehow synthetic, generic with some plastic vibe of freshness. It can be easily as an all around signature scent due to its depth. I surounded by a wonderful freshness but with manly aura of mystery and cleaness due to its depth underneath. Amazing result that made me to scream loud I WANT IT RIGHT HERE,RIGHT NOW!!!!!!
Tip: Don’t judge a perfume in a hurry,I did it many times in the past and this is a huge mistake. Give it a try again and again first to have a clear opinion how it works out on you and if the scent and the result fulfill your expectations before make a decision to like or dislike it.

Not so bad right in the top, actually similar to the top of the new Lanvin Vetiver. Soon becomes a chemical mess, though…REALLY bad. Hair spray, nail polish and/or remover…the smell of a busy beauty salon. By the base, there’s no possible way anyone, man or woman, could want to smell like this. There’s even some freshly molded plastic in there. I have no idea how they thought it would sell. And I don’t like deeply colored juice either, but that’s a separate issue.

  47. :

    ok..
its for summer days after shower or before you go to beach..but take care from first spry am really serious dont judge it before 20 minutes after that it will be ok and in the dry down very beautiful very rich..thank u mr. givenchy..
    sillage moderate
    Longevity very good

    Fresh, energising, uplifting, funny… that’s incensé ultramarine…
Joy and fun, it’s floral, fruity, I can feel the tobbaco in the drydown, a little sweet… I find it a little synthetic and soapy but stills being like any other fragrance…
Totally, the masculine counterpart of Amarige.
A masterpiece that shouldn’t have been descontinued.
And as you can see in my profile, almost all the fragrances I like are discontinued… excentric? original? I don’t know, but I love the 80’s and 90’s fragrances, and Of course… I don’t want to smell like anyone, that’s why, when I found this gem, that I haven’t smelled since 1998, I just got it…
It’s suitable for anytime, as a day fragrance, and evening too… a masculine flower blend for summer, but at the same time, very persistent for the wintertime…
    I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

I like this fragrance. It’s fresh but unique. Every so slightly synthetic but less so than most ‘marine’ fragrances.

  50. :

    3 out of 5

In one review, I said that not all summer fragrances have to be watery and citrussy and this is the perfect example! On the first sniff, you can’t believe this is a marine scent. It’s strong and nearly repulsive. 10 min later and here it comes, watermelon and flowers took me instantly to the beach… Really, a perfume that someone has put an effort on making it! Nowadays, everything just seems generic!

IU gets quite musky on my skin …in fact I do have some musk attar and this smells very similar to it, but there´s also some nice flowery-aquatic element which makes it suitable for year-round use
    definitely unique among other aquatics

    Hi,
now this was a real disappointment for me. Not even once did I like it. Not from the opening to the drydown. Hoped for better.

  55. :

    3 out of 5

This is a light, pleasant floral/aquatic combination. I used to wear this regularly, but both notes seem a little too synthetic to me now. I’ve never gotten any sense of watermelon, black currant or tobacco notes as other reviewers have, nor would I classify this as “fruity”. Definitely a warm weather scent. Longevity and sillage are excellent – noticeable but not overpowering. Could easily be classified as unisex.

According to the information on this website, Givenchy Insense Ultramarine was launched in 1995. That was the year when I bought this fragrance at a local department store for the first time, and I have been wearing it since then. It smells fresh, clean, strong and elegant. This is, in my opinion, one of the best offered by Givenchy. It is somewhat rare on the market nowadays and is no longer available at any department store in my country, but I still love to wear it. Like Prada Amber (Man), it stays on my skin for 8 or more hours. I vote for it as an excellent and top-class fragrance for men.

I smelled it first when it was first released-a generous tester in a western magazine. During the hungry and cold post soviet 90s this sscent seemed heavenly. My husband said: smells of Wild West. Then it seemed unattanainable. Then all of a sudden i saw it on a discounted shelf of an australian department store-here it was! The Dream! For a fraction of price. No doubt i grabbed it and proudly brought to present to my husband. He used it occasionally, though preferred his Trimaran, as always. I was left with more than a half bottle to use for myself. And I used it well-on those casual days, with jeans, blazer and pointy shoes-and a trail of Insense. It may mean foolish from French, but i always thought insense as in insense-smoky, enigmatic quality of it. People did cast surprised glances, having caught a trail of this intense aroma from me-but sure realised I am not the one to be joking with. LOL

I find this fragrance appealing in a very odd way. I agree with some of the criticisms that say it smells synthetic, rubber-like when first applied, and that it’s a mishmash of notes. It does, however, evoke an unusual refinement that is unique; as when one enters a flower market and smells the rush of freshly cut flowers and ferns without distinguishing a particular note. Like Xeryus Rouge it is both outré and sublime. Givenchy never disappoints.

It is a very bad sequel to an earlier masterpiece. How could Givenchy fail me? Watermelon, cassis and tobacco flower-thats how. It lacked the dry, floral brilliance of Insense. Instead it gets real sticky. I could almost say “quagmire”. Yes, the stale cosmetic “vibe” comes on stage. It is a pure clash of symbols.
The only place it worked was outside near the pool, tending my plants on a hot summer day, alone. I doubt if one could share this and feel comfortable. No apologies are required for Insense. It is not aquatic or good, by any means. Then came all of those flankers…Insense means “foolish” and the entire history of the line illustrates this.
EDIT-7/17/2012 In the midst of this dreadful HEAT of this summer, drought and general malaise, Ultramarine works just fine. I am struggling with most of my collection, so I stuck it in the fridge, gave it a spray and it works like a charm. I think that was the original intention. It is Insense, after all! A little crazy…

Since many reviewers seem to like this fruity floral watermelon-y aquatic concoction, some will find my review somewhat offensive. But here it is…
Insense Ultramarine is a vain attempt to slavishly follow the 90’s aquatic trend after the dismal failure of its groundbreaking and truly one of a kind original, Insense. With original Insense dead and buried within a few years, Givenchy tried to hide its wounds by relaunching it using all the done to death cliches – sporty bare chested man in the ocean, blue liquid, cap and blue box (let’s ditch the yellow, guys won’t touch it)… oh wait, let’s call it ultramarine to emphasize the “new” aquatic aspect. Better yet, let’s just copy Cool Water’s campaign!!
So here it is – a comfortable, yet very familiar deja-vu that the masses accepted and bought – simply on the basis of it being accessible, safe… and of course, “blue”
But is this tweaked rehash worthy of attaching the name “Insense” to its bottle? Absolutely NOT. It is banal, offensive in an inoffensive way and worst of all, new editions keep popping with progressively uninspired names like Insense Blue Laser, Blue Sky, Ice Cube, Sport and Beach Boy. These variants also ironically echo Cool Water’s various editions.
Perhaps Givenchy tried to compete with Cool Water? Or maybe they hired the same marketing company? All perfume lovers owe it to themselves to track down the original Insense and REALLY experience what Givenchy set out to do in the first place.
Insense Ultramarine is a focus group approved and confused back peddling exercise trying to desparately keep with the times with no regard for its almighty and glorious beginnings.

i don’t know why this perfume reminds me of the smell of MAKEUP powder foundation that i smelled on my mum and other women during my childhood, i really not sure why is this fragrance was presented for Men only i think its a very uni-sex perfume with a lovely soft memory i’m using it every couple of year again and again
    8/10

When we talk about Givenchy, it’s hard not to believe that is about another highest quality cologne, isn’t it? So, Insensé Ultramarine confirms that quality of this brand!
From the beginning I feel an aroma of shaving foam. Not that old type, which tends to green notes. Here, the smell is creamy and fresh, like the new shaving foams on the stores nowadays. But don’t worry, because this smell doesn’t remains for a long time on the skin, otherwise it would be too boring.
The watermelon in its top notes is quite unnoticed by me. But the mix of black currant and galbanum is more proeminent. And adorable!!
The evolution is linear on my skin, even though, it starts to get (rapidly) the freshness of mint notes and the mix of flowers. I think this is the best part of it!
In the end, despite the tobacco notes, it doesn’t bothers me at all and the smell keeps fresh and strong for hours. From its base, what detaches in an audacious manner is the cardamom.
It is a cologne with excellent duration, which brings both masculinity and modernity. However, it is not a “modern” smell, like the new ones in the market. It is something more traditional, yet timeless. 10 stars!

I dislike aquatics, not because I dislike the general concept of smelling like cool sea water on flowery tropical air, but because most aquatic fragrances come nowhere close to smelling like that. Insensé Ultramarine, however, manages to come damn close. The salty marine accord that spikes its top and middle notes is boldly pronounced against a dense and palatable mélange of fruit and flowers. A peachy rose, circumspect jasmine, and dewy magnolia/cardamom arrangement fleshes out the core of this perfume, and all
