Xeryus Rouge Givenchy for men of Givenchy

Description

Xeryus ( named after Greek god) in red version became deeper and more sensual. This is the first oriental perfume for men by Givenchy.
Top notes are fresh and green thanks to kumquat, cactus and tarragon. The warm perfumed heart is made of cedar needles, red pimento and African pelargonium, which adds a spicy or even hot nuance to the composition. The base is precious and austere: cedar, sandalwood, white musk, grey amber. The perfume was created by Annick Menardo in 1995.

An ex boyfriend of mine wore this, and I couldn’t keep my hands off of him. Sexy AF.

I used to have this bottle long time back and all I remember that it used to have a great scent with amazing longevity.

My older son took my bottle of Xeryus Rouge, I wasn’t using it anyway, cause I have a hard time wearing peppery scents. They just don’t work for me and always annoys me after a while. It had been just sitting on the shelf for a couple of years. But boy does this smell great when he sprays it in his room! Xeryus Rouge manages to be unique, likeable and ageless at the same time. Not many scents have all those features, if any. This is definetly a sample-worthy scent, it’s that good… if you’re looking for something a little different, but still fresh and easy to wear… I will pass on Xeryus Rouge myself, but I still must recommend it!

Just took a late night shower with an unscented shower gel. One spray of original formula to my chest and now blissfully laying in bed. Peaceful sexy.

This is my first ever review, and I have become a fragrance lover in the last couple years only after gramma left me some money, and then, well, Amazon happened…
Anyways, with 32 bottles in the collection now and a couple years of trying them all repeatedly in all seasons, this puppy is hands-down my favorite above all the others. It’s spicy and creamy at the same time, and I’ve gotten compliments from both men and women, especially in the winter on the coldest days. One of the things about me and fragrance is that it’s a break from the analytical/day job side of my life, and I let intuition and fantasy take over. To me this babydoll is a spicy cactus carpet ride through an herb garden with a glass of orange juice in one hand while a delicious musky incense burns in a 70’s container in the distance: perfection! Thank you Givenchy!

I had to make another post to express my love for the fragrance and hope you will try this too.
I cannot get over the likable energetic fruit vibe this has, the light and slightly green cactus, the likable and well blended powderyness, and the overall elegance and smoothness this has.
This really is grown up polo red and is a cool cat or big boss kind of fragrance, when he goes to the park.
5 to 7 hours longevity and fair projection overall, but good sillage. No complaints here
This is still fairly mass appealing , but is unique and could be a signature scent.
5 out of 5 and a masterpiece for me
25 plus, not for the sauvage or blue de channel kids

I love the recent formulation and have smelled both.
The old reformulation is smoother, projects less, last longer and is darker with a sense of resin and more wood.
The modern formulation more playful and young. The cactus note is more noticable, is more aromatic and has a sense of softness, but not powderyness.
I am happy to say the reformulation is the a more mature or grown up Polo red. They might be 70 percent similar and instead of the red fruit of polo you get nice green cactus in Xeryus Rouge.
It lasts 4 to 5 hours on me and projection is fair, but the sillage is good and is all year appropriate.
This is a statement maker and can leave impressions , trust me.
If you want something more sensuous and is more more informal or party appropriate I would recommend Declaration D’Un Soir Intense.

I’d like to second what bensofarr said, the current formulation needs warm weather for the sandalwood and musk to show up. Everything about it may scream “cool weather scent,” but if you want to experience all the depth of the original formulation you’ll need some help from the weather.

I used to love this juice, especially the woody drydown but thanks to the stupid Reformulations I now hate it, it’s now linear from start to finish you get only the boring scent of the top notes, the batches I hated were 5T01 and 4Z01, same boring linear juice, without longevity without any other than the fresh top Note that is no more smells like how it’s used to be,Now it screams SYNTHETIC with every sniff..Farewell Givenchy….also couldn’t find a trace for their old perfume (Monsieur 2 de Givenchy)…ruin your best or discontinue it…Good 4 U Givenchy…. Applause…..

    Great business and casual scent.
Not dated, but not youthful either. As opposed to the club settings most people recommend this for, I find that it works excellently in serious business settings, meetings, negotiations etc. where it commands your fellow attendants to pay attention.
To describe it is hard, but the first thought that comes to mind is deep – indeed it is a deep scent with some exotic hint to it. The pimento, kumquat and geranium deliver a serious, but not austere feel that becomes a little sweeter over time. Some fruit and some woods. Also the pimento/red pepper/cayenne gives off a very warm vibe, which makes it ideally suited for colder winter days. Spicy, classy and with great performance. How they made it fruity and sweet, but never cloying or synthetic is a great piece of work. Very unique.
Maybe not a masterpiece, but a damn good scent composition by mrs. Menardo.

    Poor longevity????
This lasts up to 9 hours on me!
It is a fantastic fragrance and ahead of its time. Spicy and sweet.. think of a higher quality hot water but with more bite.
Ok it’s not as good as PI(classic) but it is very good!

Very strange scent. To me it does not really smell like a fragrance. I do not really know what to think of it. I am also in awe why people like this so much. Strange scent with poor projection/longevity. There is just nothing special about this.
I wanted a fragrance that was completely different from my other fragrances, which it is, but not in a positive way. Selling my blind-bought 100ml bottle. Pitty.

  17. :

    4 out of 5

This is something I wanted to like so much – Maybe I was attracted to the full red bottle – the smell is not bad but also nothing very special – I do not really understand so many people brag about this as long lasting, being a beast but one way or the other it does not protect very well on my skin – I have to spray a lot to get any projection, if there isn’t much joy. It’s a waste to spend the money for it

  18. :

One of the strongest fragrances I’ve ever had, and as luck would have it, I am not fond of this one. I love a lot of generic type Calone laden frags, this one very irritating very similar to a axe/lynx body spray

  19. :

    4 out of 5

Xeryus Rouge is an amazing fragrance, really incredible. Of course perfume tastes are something very subjective, but no one can deny that this is a very high quality fragrance. I like to make an analogy and think about perfumes as I do with colors. This one will definitely give you a red aura after you apply it, exactly as the color of the bottle suggests. The opening is surprisingly fresh for such a powerful woody oriental perfume. You get a lot of the kumquat and green cactus right of the bat after you spray it. That’s where the initial freshness comes from. The kumquat fades away fairly quickly, but the cactus stays and is one of the if not the most noticeable note on this fragrance. The sandalwood, cedar and white musk are noticed a little later, and are pretty noticeable as well. The red pepper is subtle (fortunately for my personal taste). It has the exact amount to just give it that little spiciness and extra uniqueness to the fragrance, but not to be excessive and bothering to the nose, as it happens with many modern perfumes. Xeryus Rouge doesn’t evolve a lot overtime, it’s fairly linear, but I really don’t care very much to be honest. I think the smell is simply amazing and unique. I never smelled any other fragrance like it during my 12 years as a perfume collector.
It’s just a very sensual, warm and involving scent. Just don’t over spray it, it has a very powerful projection, and excellent longevity. If I spray it on my skin, I can still smell it on the next day. I believe 3 sprays is a good amount for it, more than that and it will start getting cloying.
It’s not the best fragrance to go under the sun with or very hot weather, but its subtle fresh opening compensates a little for this. If you enjoy very sensual fragrances on the line of M7 and Fahrenheit, there’s a high probability that you will also like Xeryus Rouge a lot. If you like mostly citrus / aquatic fragrances, like 212 Men or Acqua di Gio, there’s a big chance you won’t like it.
If you are going on a romantic date, I don’t see many other fragrances better than this one, really. As I said at the beginning, whether you personally like the smell of it or not, no one can deny the immense quality of this fragrance. I particularly love it, find it so pleasant, and will never run out of it, as long as it is produced. If you are a perfume collector or perfume lover and don’t know this fragrance yet, this is a must for you.

This is only the first day i am using Xeryus Rouge, and i must say it took me just 2 hours to fall in love with this one. The only Givenchy i liked. Projects class in every whiff. Can be used any time in any season, just not under the scortching sun in the hot countries, cooler summers are okay. Absolutly loved it.
BTW it was a blind buy 😛

It is true what they say. This is some great, unique juice. Warm to hot spicy pimento and fresh green cactus makes the an experiment in opposites that I totally dig. Add the base of musky cedar and you have this masterpiece.
Timeless in the sense that it easily smells like something that would be released today and be just as relevant as when it was released over 20 years ago.
Very versatile as it classy but has a fun, sexy, frivolous side as well. Office, date, just-because – it works for any occasion. Be ready for compliments from those around you.

this one was in my wishlist for a few months.finally i realized i couldn’t resist buying this bad ass.
    ***packaging***
    Retro, stylish
    ***bottle***
love holding this in my hand. suits the smell very much.easy to put in your suitcase.
    ***at first encounter***
initial note, smelled like soup and regret. specially if you spray the same spot twice or 3 times. but then after 2-3 minutes HELLO CACTUS my old friend! and if you wait 20 more minutes the vanilla comes out and it stays and adds a mellow delicous scent. it’s probably not vanilla it should be one of the notes in the perfume that is rare and i’m not familiar with it.
the whole time orange and cedar are laying in the backgroudn making not so much noise but they exist.n doubt this is a citrusy perfume!
    ***The Farewell***
    ending note is musk.
***OVERALL*** performance is great. i don’t recommend this one because i want to be the only one wearing it! it’s an old perfume that no one really knows about but everyone keeps asking what it is!it’s not really hard to figure out this scent. you have probably smelled it somewhere in your life but can’t remember when and where! i would wear it at winter spring and autumn 24/7 but maybe not in a hot summer day. but summer night? definitely!
***Does it smell like Davidoff Hot Water?***
let me put it this way. davidoff hot water is xeryus rouge’s retarded stepbrother. Xeryus rouge is like taking davidoff hot water to a whole new level. xerus is the type of perfume that you can wear at your first date but davidoff? maybe after 30 years of marriage your wife will like it at some point

Oh my Lord, whatta perfum!!! I just love it, very pleasant, manly and powerful aroma… I have received complements in lot places (outdoor and inside), I have used it in the office, dates and clubs and the results are the same, people love it, strangers ask about the name of the parfum… my advise is if you want to win all the looks around you, buy this Givenchy! Besides it has good price and you dont need to apply a lot, just 4 times and you will smell good for over 12hrs. Saludos!

This was a recent blind buy for me and I am glad that I purchased it. Xeryus Rogue has a very creamy wood, cactus and pimento cheese opening. A clean scent, but not a squeaky clean scent. Kind of like the good guy that knows how, and when, to be a bad boy.
I find XR to be a sexy, classy and masculine scent that has good projection and longevity on my skin. XR can be warn in formal or trendy casual attire.
The lady that cut my hair immediately said that she loved my cologne and asked what it was so she could get some for her man.
Bottom line: Every man should try a sample of this one.

Lol davidoff hot water are you joking it’s nothing like davidoff hot water seriously that’s just crazy. The only thing they have in common is a red bottle.
I have both old and new bottles they’re about the same apart from longevity and silage are far greater with the vintage bottles. This is a truly beautiful fragrance very unique sweet fruity type of fragrance very classy. So happy givenchy are still making this beauty it’s far better than anything they’ve released recently.

Nothing unisex about this one. It has a barber shop freshly shaved face vibe. The spicy notes and cactus makes it unquestionably a male’s fragrance. Apparently a lot of women here wear this and call it unisex… That’s perfectly fine. My wife would never wear this thank God! Am I bad because I prefer her to smell feminine and pretty to match her personality? Sorry for not being politically correct. This chap is just too old fashion I guess. Well, I suppose if she was Butch or tomboy type she could pull this off. But that’s just not her! She’s all lady and girly girl type. Thus Xeryus Rouge just does not fit her and she agrees.
Nevertheless, XR is unique, long lasting and can be worn for any occasion. For me, it’s best in the autumn. It smells like the bottle… A red rouge.

Cousin says i smell like an old paps
Mom says i smell delicous sort of vanilla or caramel
my gf says i smell like a real man should
Friends says i smell sweats and fruits lol
I say i smell rich and distinctive.
    – you see now that this stuff you cannot explain or define??
quuality stuff!! not everyone will undertand this, oh and ridiculously weak dumb performance. This one lasts about 6-7 hours max .

    My all time favorite.
Unique, distinctive and very classy. It is a winter perfume and one of those smells that radiates the entire day. If you want a perfume that makes you smell classy, sophisticated and a bit aloof this is the one for you. But don’t blind buy it because I think it doesn’t suit everyone. I can’t imagine it on a cool young sporty person for example. This is rather a 30 years old tall handsome guy in a blazer drinking wine in a fancy restaurant on a date.
I recommend applying 1-2 sprays then reapplying another 1-2 in a few hours. Too much at once might be offensive. I had so many compliments for this one but I also had a couple of people telling me it is too offensive so I go easy on it.
Got my first bottle in 2004 and I make sure I always have more.

  29. :

    5 out of 5

It has unusual freshness, something unique and sharp, perhaps the pimento notes. But it’s not harsh, on the contrary…it gives good mood when smelling it. Longevity is very good (12 hours on my body) with medium projection. It becomes my top 5 of fresh fragrances.

  30. :

    3 out of 5

I have 2 bottles of the vintage bottle this fragrance is absolutely beautiful sweet fresh and intense the projection and silage are outstanding. A deep ambery sweet aroma keeps projecting literally all day long. I have to use it sparingly as i fear the new bottles won’t be as intense.

  31. :

    3 out of 5

too spicy and it gave me an allergic reaction when I spray on my neck. smell is strong for the first hour, less than 4 spray is enough as its cloying and some people will be offended by the smell.

  32. :

    3 out of 5

    Recent blind buy.
Nice opening, has a feverish quality, red is certainly appropriate, seems to breed on the skin. Still need to spray quite liberally to really open the scent. I get a warm citrus opening backed up with a musky heart note. I’m not getting any Cactus. Fruitiness comes out in the dry down for me, which lingers and isn’t powdery. Atomizer on my bottle is substandard and causes the scent to run on the skin.
Longevity is good, faint traces after 8 hours plus! Projection seems a little week, but the silage is very likeable & noticeable.
The bottle is awful and dated, seems a remnant before its own time. Paper label, who on earth uses paper labels any longer?! The red colour stands out though. Its also one of those bottles that’s under sells itself, 100ml looks like 50ml size, compared to many other manufacturers. No oversized chunky glass here.
Not sure I’d buy again, but got a 100ml bottle for the price a 50ml costs on the high street.
    Overall 8/10

I was initially very disappointed when I got this after a blind buy. The opening was pleasant but seemed 2-dimensional and was far too sweet for my tastes.
I was promised a primordial desert.
All I got was a day-trip to scotttsdale.
But then I wore this out for the first time today in the heat and humidity. The musk and sandalwood are in full force.
    Here come the rattlesnakes

Spring night fun and shenanigans. Xeryus Rouge from Givenchy is a great evening scent and its just fun. The start of the orange and tarragon is intriguing to the nose. It is different. These notes set a tone indicating that we have a departure from typical notes one usually encounters in scents. Then the chili and cactus kick in! Yes! The geranium arrives to give this scent a bit of floral relief. Then this scent eventually nestles into a cedar, sandalwood and musk base. XR is pure nineties but so good! It is just something that is easy to wear when you’re feeling playful or want to bring back that innocence of your youth. This scent has a warm sweetness to it, and a slightly seductive aura to it as well. Rock this on date with your Steady Betty to the movies, and remember to reach for her hand periodically during the film.

  37. :

I used to like XR but not anymore. Funny, I just can’t stand any scent containing any pepper nomore. I have a practically full bottle of this awaiting a new owner…

  38. :

    3 out of 5

I’ve tried Xeryus Rouge from two samples and have been impressed both times. Warm gorgeous scent.
    Has a timeless quality.
Night time scent in my opinion and suiting the milder months, would get a bit overpowering if used in warm weather.
Of note, I found that Xeryus Rogue really lasted with me (I’m lucky if I get 3-4 hours from most scents but this lasted and was detectable on me for at least 6-8 hours!)
As others have stated, very peppery but also very smooth, well blended, It’s detectable but not overpowering.
Ladies complimented me when I wore this. Although marketed as masculine, could be alluring if used by a woman in my opinion, I could see a dark haired femme fatale rocking this, or perhaps a seductive Spanish senorita.
    Nice!

Awesome blind buy! It’s a nice play on soft, spicy and sweet with the Pimento and the Orange. Think of it as the smell of morning dew in the plains overshadowed by semi-arid hills in the fall season. In a way, it is almost like pheromones, very enchanting!
I never thought that cactus could be so smooth. No pun intended! LOL! The dry-down is classy, warm and cozy like a gentleman should; a young executive wearing a coat or cardigan at a board-meeting function! It’s probably the Sandalwood mixed with the White Musk. It lasts a long time and radiates at arm’s length, which is just what is needed to make an impression. I am definitely keeping this one!

This fragrance is unique. It has a special vibe of clean smell. The woody smell is vibrant and magnificent. You can also pick that kind of wonderful peppery smell. I think this fragrance is addictive (in a good sense.) I use it either for day and night. I feel it fresh but deep.

  45. :

Xeryus Rouge is quite distinctive. Not at all mainstream!
It comes of as a fresh, sweet, fruity scent. I have never smelled kumquat but I think it smells like it.
What I don’t care for is its sourness.
For the people that wonder if the juice in the new bottle is reformulated: i currently have the “vintage” (rectangular cap) and the new version (round cap) on both wrists. They start the same, but after a while the vintage version seems a bit more soft, natural and better balanced, while the new one comes off at slightly synthetic and somewhat more harsh. The differences are really small though. I couldn’t detect difference in strength.

My husband had this one when we were newly wed in 1996, and I remember I loved it. So I found this bottle abroad on holiday and had to have it….for myself! I think a woman can pull this off, at least I do. After it has settled Down its pleasant and aromatic and quite unisex. Likey!

Before trying this fragrance I had read very polarized reviews from those who love even those who hate it. I’ll be in the group of those who enjoy this fragrance. Xeryus Rouge is a good classified as oriental fragrance is warm and romantic (not sexual, Sex bottled looks best on Kouros). Its output smell is soft but intense, sweet and slightly cool, the truth is that seeing the notes that compose it I couldn´t imagined that would produce this very nice combination. Over time the fragrance becomes warm and woodsy. I think there are several more recent oriental fragrances that smell similar to this, but not exceed it, because Xeryus makes me better balanced.
Unlike many comments regarding its short-lived on my skin lasted about 12 hrs., But after the first hour and a half is level with skin. I think its use would be preferred for evening hours and autumn seasons or cool climates.
I’d like Givenchy again produce more “audacious fragrances” as those that occurred last century.

My first review here and I’m a novice fragrance fan.
Xeryus Rouge was the very first fragrance I ever tried, and I have a strong connection to it. It was 1995, I’d got hold of a tester of Xeryus Rouge, and I’d sloshed the whole thing over me on my first school theatre trip. It was an incredibly happy evening – a combo of culture and feeling independent on an evening trip out with friends (Michael Maloney as Hamlet, btw) and the fragrance has meant a lot to me ever since.I recently became actively interested in fragrances via Tania Sanchez’ and Luca Turin’s book, and I thought I’d buy a new bottle of XR.
I have the very last dregs of my original bottle of ‘splash’ aftershave, and have got the current spray EDT. Quite an eye opener about what a reformulation can do! The original had a wonderful fruity top note. This seems to me – with my novice’s nose – to have been replaced by a much less interesting ‘smoky’ opening, but I think this is more accurately described above by others as ‘peppery’.
It has the same construct as the original, but the freshness isn’t there. So for me, I think I’ll have to get my hands on a ‘vintage’ bottle if I’m going to be satisfied. I wore one of my last splashes of original the other day for the first time in years and got two compliments (which I never get!). I think that speaks volumes about the originality of this fragrance. Highly recommended from me – mainly for an October night at the theatre, although that’s me being biased! 🙂
PS Recently bought Azzaro Pour Homme (which to me smells like Spandau Ballet’s Paint Stripper), Chanel Pour Monsieur (which on me smells like my Granny getting dressed up for bingo…shame as I love it on other people) and Guerlain Habit Rouge, which I do like, but it’s a bit almondy for me. Where next, if we consider XR my favourite?

What a nice surprise Xeryus Rouge was to me! How come I havn’t tried this before? Probably because most scents from Givenchy has been dissapointments to me, with the exception of the fantastic Pi. Xeryus Rouge is sweet, bright, fresh and fruity. There is an early, dry peppery note(pimento I presume)that luckily fades swiftly. Good projection and longevity for this type of scent.

“Xeryus Rouge is a cologne that is rather uncommon here in the US. It’s warm and deep with subtle mix of sweetness and spice that’s perfect for any occasion. Because it’s not as commonly worn, I received compliments on it from others curious about the scent.
It is perfect for day or night in warm or cold weather. I would wear this as my daily cologne – both at work and at home. What’s wonderful is you can just put it on in the morning, and the smell lingers all day. When I put it on in the morning, I can still smell it on me when I get home after work. Obviously, as with pretty much all eau de toilettes, if you put it on at 7 am, you’re going to need a re-fresh if you want it to really project while going out in the evenings. But even so, it never really fades away.
I love experimenting with colognes, and I’m currently wearing another as my daily cologne… but I know that I’ll be getting this one again soon because I miss it too much. It makes the perfect signature scent.”

    Review for Vintage Formulation:
Xeryus Rouge is a UNIQUE and GORGOEUS fragrance with dynamic transitions from top, heart, and basenotes.
The first 10-15 seconds starts off citric, juicy, fresh, and masculine. To my preference, the citrus isn’t the typical lemon, sour, harsh in-your-face nonsense that really diverts me from citrus fragrances. It’s very fresh and bright and smells slightly familiar. Minutes after the opening, XR starts to take a classic shaving cream nuance. This shaving cream vibe has a very well-behaved black licorice/anise accord that lightly floats over this classic shaving cream nuance. But wait! There’s more: once the barber shop/shaving cream nuance fades, we’re left with red berries. Lots and lots of fresh, red berries! Better yet – it’s still masculine by society’s standards! The pimento takes a role as a slightly powdery bed for the red berries to jump up and down on in a very jubilant manner.
After about 90 minutes, the berries finally exhaust themselves and take the pimento away with them. What we’re left with is a very sweet and creamy sandalwood with an aura of subtle, sultry musk.
Xeryus Rouge will be my signature scent for 2016!

have an original bottle dated from 1999 as well as a
2011 bottle. There is a huge difference in the drydown of the two.
The original formulation is just GORGEOUS! A musky fruity masculine floral, which lasts forever and this is because of the rich musky tonka bean and sandalwood in the basenotes. The first 1-2 hours its mainly Pimento and cactus with bits of tonka bean peaking here and there. After 1-2 hours, the fragrance’s true beauty comes out as the tonka and sandalwood become much more prominent but with the fruity smell of the cactus and pimento still there. Its a very sexy fragrance in its 90s formulation.
The current formulation has no sandalwood and tonka base notes and smells like rotting fruit. Its horrible!! Also the current formulation is very synthetic smelling as oppose to the original formulation which is very natural. I suspect the IFRA regulations adversely affected the formulation of this fragrance.
    9/10 for the original
    2/10 for the current formulation

Well, it’s done. I read all these reviews three times over, I kept coming back, until I finally went and blind bought this.
So much confusion after the first spray! What is this? How is this any good? I wore it for two days, still quite confused, although my sweetheart loved it instantly. The uncertainty was slowly replaced by deep affection and now, three weeks later, I’m convinced it’s the best fragrance I’ve smelled so far. The dry down is to die for, it’s incredible. Dark, warm and unbelievably sexy.
I’d love to tell you what notes I’m getting, but I honestly have no idea as I have little to no experience in that regard. Nevertheless, this is very likely something I will always want to have in my collection.

I have a current bottle of the “new” Xeryus Rouge, as well as a vintage bottle from about 8 years ago. If that qualifies as vintage.
I would have noticed if there were a significant difference between the two. There is a slight difference. But it is so slight as to be more attributable to the mere and simple fact that one bottle has aged for 8 years and the other has not. I use the bottles interchangeably. I’m not trying to save the vintage one. I’m afraid it’ll go bad before I use it, but it has been great so far.
This fragrance is suitable for any and all occasions, with the understanding that more or less in application is important and must be taken into consideration.

*This review is for the vintage*
I think XR falls into that category of synthetic “concept” fragrances, a bit like Beyond Paradise, but better made and less polarizing.
I am not sure why people are saying the vintage smelled “natural”. I love the vintage but I doubt something this hyper is natural (but I freely admit I am not an expert in these matters).
To put it short, it is a fruity, slightly musky, and spicy masculine fougere. I want to stress t
