Let me first say that X Saffron is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. It’s literally everything that I want in a fragrance: a little spice with some sweetness and floral notes complimenting and lingering over a slightly musky, woody, and leathery base supported by vanilla and dominated by saffron. There is not a single fragrance that I have been able to wear comfortably at anytime of the day or night, in any occasion, and in any season (regarding temperature and humidity) except for X Saffron.
X Saffron by Clive Christian, at first, seems a bit like a mixture of the opening of X for men, the middle notes of X & C for men with a hint of the dry down of No. 1 for men. But this fragrance stands alone in the most beautiful way imaginable. The opening notes make their statement known, as with X, but without too much bite. The heart notes play beautifully with the base notes and compliment them so well that I find myself blissfully lost in the elusive saffron – not knowing whether or not I applied it 30 minutes ago or 6 hours ago. It’s sillage is weaker in comparison to X & C, but given that, the longevity is surprisingly strong.
Exposure to heat really brings out the saffron and some of the other floral notes, even 24 hours after application. A cooler temperature brings out the dark spices accompanied by the leathery sweetness surrounding the saffron. From my experience with other fragrances X Saffron’s interaction with hot and cold temperatures is unprecedented, considering its ‘category’, in that it remains true to its core heart and base notes with little variation.
To conclude, X Saffron has great allure, very sensual when close, slightly masculine, and calming and playful from a distance. It lasts long, as it should, but might seem to lack the sillage some people look for in fragrances at this level, however, it does project (in a strange manner) so that anyone within 5-6 feet will get a slight whiff and become mesmerized with curiosity. Bravo!
A 10/10 has finally been added to my collection.
Below is the ACTUAL note pyramid… (listed first by what I smell most during stages)
Top Notes: pink pepper, ginger, cardamom, juniper, bergamot
Heart Notes: cinnamon, pimento, jasmin sambac oil, orris butter, rose, lily of the valley, jasmine
Base Notes: Saffron, vanilla, leather, sandalwood, castoreum, amber, oakmoss, cedarwood, patchouli, vetiver
(After the pink pepper’s punch fades the transition from the top notes to the heart notes and base notes is seamless. The cedarwood, patchouli, and vetiver are barely noticeable as they subtly infuse with the rest of the notes.)
