Man this stuff’s aggressive! This may well be the strongest, sharpest lemon and/or verbena opening I’ve ever found in a bottle rather than crushed between my fingers (though let me admit for the record that I haven’t smelled the verbena plant itself). It has a certain green astringence which I would assign to peels and leaves if any of it’s coming from lemon rather than verbena. Maintains an herbalness which feels as cool as mint but doesn’t smell like actual mint, though this starts to become a bit too dirt-like later on. As the typical citrus topnotes disappear, the only remaining citrus is the burn…upon breathing deeply over the sprayed spot I feel a delayed but rather strong burn in my sinuses. Admittedly, this test goes above and beyond the bounds of normal sniffing, but to put it in perspective, only a rare handful of scents cause this reaction for me. I’m fairly certain that smelling this frag is resulting in my not being able to fully take in the other that I’m trying to review concurrently…it smells different than how it always did in the past. So enjoy Caswell Massey Verbena, but don’t assume you’ll be able to smell anything else properly for a while afterward. Still, it’s a pretty refreshing room spray.
