Not much surprises me anymore in fragrances. Underworld really kicked my expectations all a-crazy! I knew nothing of the notes, as I was given a decant by a fellow Fragrantican. Of course, the name is cool, and I’ve enjoyed other Soivohle scents. But… I get the name. Perfect. It is the vetivers, and what vetivers they are! So earthy, so dusty, so weird and wonderful. These combined with clove and coffee, cocoa and flowers? yes, flowers!! makes for a most unusual scent. Reminds me of the feel of my favorite cemeteries (in a good way) with that earth and touch of lilies. Outstanding, and recommended by a vintage fragrance lover who also loves ’em down and dirty. 🙂

Wow! My most anticipated fragrance of the house did not disappoint! Granted it could be even darker and gloomier (for the namesake), I still got what I expected–vetiver & spiced cocoa–in the most natural and delicious way! The vetiver here really blooms after 3 hrs, turning sparkly citrus-green-earthy, and even outshines my other favorite Oud Lacquer at some point

The opening of Underworld is bombastic: vetiver, clove, cinnamon, pepper, more clove, coffee, sandalwood, additional clove, all hitting you at high levels. Frankly, it’s overwhelming and the clove is cranked way, way too high. It doesn’t take long for things to mellow out a tad, but what Underworld becomes is pretty much clove over a kind of leathery note. Take some of the more extreme Le Labo scents like Cuir 28 or Gaiac 10 and replace most of the ingredients with clove and you’ll get the picture. Quite extreme and certainly vivid, but it’s mainly clove.

I am very very very very very impressed by this fragrance! As soon as I took the cap off of the sample, my first sniff said “wowee wow wow wow”, and I’ve worn it all day and now that it has become part of the top layer of my skin, I still say “wow”….I would definitely cough up the money for this one. I was afraid it would be too masculine for me (and I am sure that this would smell absolutely delicious on a man), but it worked!!! There is a cinnamon/clove (more on the cinnamon side though) spiciness with a touch of lemon (like a lemon blossom, not so much lemon juice…or is that what the vetiver smells like? Not sure what vetiver smells like) and after about two hours, the sweetness of the sandalwood and vanilla come out and mesh with the spices and the lemon. I think the jasmine might be part of the base, it’s a soft support for everything else. This one is perfect, so artfully made, beautifully blended. It conveys mystery, it is a unique, intriguing fragrance; there aren’t one or two things that overpower it, and it stays true to what it smelled like when I applied it at 0700 (it is now 21:54) only now much softer but still there, if you were to stand right next to me. I honestly haven’t smelled anything like this before, and I want something unique. Underworld is that fragrance. I’m not sure how else I could describe it! I actually received some compliments on it, and even my husband (who normally doesn’t notice such things) was impressed!

Would you believe it? This is the first of my perfume that just a little dab and I already got compliments from friends of both genders.
At its top it smells like the indie scent Zodiac Capricorn (myrrh vetiver oil) that I bought. If this Underworld is a strong at the top, Zodiac Capricorn is stronger that it is annoying to smell.
Zodiac top scent lasted for an hour then it transforms to a beautiful scent, smoky, burned wood and rubber, but in a good way.
Underworld is simply amazing. It transforms immediately to its heart of which it kinda reminds me Ambrarem. One of my favorite niche oud perfumes.
Both Underworld and Ambrarem perform amazingly from heart and dry down. They are almost identical, magnificent, beast sillage, sexy, bold, rich and well refined that can be worn on formal events. They are most suitable for fall and winter. Some differences between the two is that Underworld has some powdery effect on my skin while Ambrarem does not have such. On longevity, I say Ambrarem sticks longer on my skin but both of them stay longer on clothes.
Considering how expensive Underworld, to have Ambrarem would be good enough, if you want to experience the magic of Underworld, at a lesser price.
Underworld is a Buy, but if you have Ambrarem, you can live without Underworld. Well that is based on my experience. It may differ on yours.
Underworld is far better than other oud frags out there. Although I dont get vetiver and cinnamon on this perfume, having oud in its most awesome performance is good enough to forget that there is vetiver and cinnamon on this blend. Plus I love balmy kind of perfumes. This one definitely has it.
Again, one dab, earned me compliments. That is indeed a magic potion to try or buy.

The main notes I got from this was cinnamon and a resin that could even be called amber. I also picked up black pepper in the top and mid that morphed into a woody, earthy, vetiver at the dry down. An ever so faint trace of leather and rose add to the warmth of this gem.
I definately get images of a hot, earthy, underworld with this fragrance. I thought this was a “dirty” warm scent, and I wouldn’t consider it lady like at all even though it is unisex. I got a more masculine version of Smell Bent’s Horny Little Devil from this. HLD is another good cinnamon/amber scent but more on the “clean” side of the notes. I could see Underworld for a guy, and Horny Little Devil for a gal going hand in hand. The names seem to fit accordingly as well. LoL.
Projection and sillage were pretty good on this and it lasted 8-10 hours on my skin. All in all, a great fragrance for all you cinnamon lovers.
It is a parfume absolute so a little goes a long way but at the rediculous price of $180 for 15ml, it would probably be a special occasion ONLY fragrance. Thats $12 per ml, or a standard 3.4 oz bottle for $1,200.00. Even with the outragous price tag, this is my signature fragrance, and the best I’ve ever smelled.
