Description

Hermes launches the new fourth fragrance from the collection of garden-inspired fragrances Un Jardin, named Un Jardin Sur Le Toit or “A Garden on the Roof”in 2011. Un Jardin Sur Le Toit refers to the especially luxurious garden located on the Hermes’ headquarters building roof at 24 Rue Faubourg Saint-Honore in Paris.

The garden is full of aromatic herbs, flowers and fruits whose flavors vary as they pass through the metamorphosis induced by the seasons. Its fresh and sweet-smelling atmosphere is captured by apple, pear, rose, green grass, basil, magnolia and compost notes.

The composition is designed by Jean-Claude Ellena.

Hermes Un Jardin Sur Le Toit is available in heavy glass bottles of light green shades as 50 and 100 ml Eau de Toilette.

I’ve been trying out almost all Hermès fragrances from all of their ranges for quite a while now. None of them seemed to suit me, and whether it was a skin chemistry issue or just my nose not agreeing to any of them, I really don’t know.
But finally I found the one I like: Un Jardin Sur le Toit.
This is very green and fresh on my skin, but not as plain or sour as Jardin Sur le Nil. This one does have enough of the fruity and even sweet elements to lift it above all those generic green scents that there are so many out there these days. And no unpleasantly sour elements here.
A refreshing scent that makes me feel happy and light.

Very sweet and smells like a garden to me.
After few hours, I smell like tea!
I don’t really like green Smell, but this one is acceptable. Not my favourite, but I still like it.
There are a lot of nice and amazing fragrance compared to this, but I still wear it day time sometimes.
I blind purchase last month from the review here but I have no regret.
It has a very unique smell.

To me this smells like unsweet linden blossom and citrus. VERY pretty, clean and fresh without being aquatic or soapy at all. I like this combination very much.

Power of Hermès fan so strong here, after I complain about performance and price issues my comment has deleted in two days!!! So in case you just visiting here guys and can’t find the negative comments it doesn’t mean this fragrance only have positive feedback, but it all been deleted. So sad that fragratica newbie members today.
Don’t close the people eyes if they have different opinion.

maybe I’m biased after I read that they tried to create an atmosphere of a rose garden on top of a building… Hence I really feel like being in a rose garden after the rain when I wear this… So I’m really smitten by this fragrance… For me this one is the best from Hermes Un Jardin Series.

A great fresh/fruity scent. Like freshly cut grass with a bowl of freshly cut apples and pears sitting on the grass. A bright spring fragrance. Problem is, it sits too close to the skin and has little longevity. For the price point, disappointing.

More grassy and herbal than fruity. It still a good change of pace during summer

Un Jardin Sur le Toit is a nice scent, but it’s not my favorite from the Jardin Series. I get a natural green and dewy scent (not specifically a grass note), rose, sweet red apples and pear juice. There’s a certain clarity and cleanness to this scent, though it’s not soapy at all. Like the other Jardin scents, it’s refreshing in the summer. But I don’t find myself loving it because the composition reminds me of a lot of innocent fruity rose designer scents, just with a touch more naturalness. It feels a bit uninspired…but pretty. On the feminine side of unisex. Good sillage, ok longevity. Mild like.

Perfect for hot summer in the city. Feeling fresh and clean

I don’t get any fruity or floral in this. I don’t exactly get freshly cut grass either, just strong, herbal greens. I enjoy it’s strength (more or less arm length) and longevity. Perfect for a toned down look in the summer.
edit: i also get some dead skunk in a bush vibe from this… it’s really interesting

One Spray Lasts a good amount of time, this fragrance is amazing, very good in the summer and smells fruity like melon, pear mixed with other things. I’m a male and I got a sample of this, hoping to get more samples from their garden fragrances because I’m in love with them..
Not SOMETHING i would casually wear cause its unisex is smells noticably femenine but its great.
    Rating is Great.

Another one bites the dust. Having tried this on my skin today has made me give up on perfumes with rose in them. It just turns to soap on my skin. I really don’t have the right chemistry for that flower.
The rest is beautiful though. If your skin does actually work with roses, try it. It’s a lovely green garden with roses and some sweet fruits. The fruits are very prominent in the opening, but in the drydown they become less noticeable and are really just there to complement the rest.
It’s a somewhat watery smell, as if the garden is soaked in water after heavy rainfall. Very refreshing.
This scent does not last long however and it becomes a skin scent within the first hour. I’ll let you decide if that’s worth its price tag.

During the summer, Jardin sur le Toit is my white t-shirt fragrance–I throw it on when I want to wear something clean, crisp, and casual.
Jardin Sur Le Toit is best enjoyed during hot summer days. It tends to fall flat when the weather is cooler. The opening is a juicy, effervescent, sweet apple (similar to braeburns, in my opinion) with dewy grass. If eventually dries down to a soft, rosy skin scent. Unfortunately, this only lasts 4-5 hours, so respritzing is a must.
Remarkable? No. Extraordinary? Definitely not. But I enjoy wearing this on days when I dont want to think too hard about how I want to smell. It’s inoffensive, fresh, and something I tend to reach for quite frequently on casual weekends and also for work.

This is a very interesting and pleasant green! I can feel the smell of grass and roses and some sweetness. Generally, I’m not a fan of green fragrances, but this one doesn’t smell too green and herbal like other fragrances, therefore it’s an exception for me. Sillage is medium to skin scent for me and the longevity is…ok if you also count the time you feel it when you push your nose onto your skin. This is a very realistic scent, in my opinion. It feels like you’re sitting in a garden with many rose bushes and fruit-bearing trees.

  16. :

a bottle of pure elegance! a bit more feminine than unisex. the rose notes are barely visible, it isn’t the usual fruity scent either which is a great thing. Garden On The Roof is really a classy and sophisticated perfume giving a sense of power and success.

This might be my favorite “freshly mowed lawn” scent. It starts off sweet from the pear and apple notes and then quickly becomes a dewy morning grass, intensely green and summery. The nose behind this is Jean-Claude Ellena, one of my favorite perfumers. (When you get as into perfumes as I am, you start to see the noses like rock stars and you await their next release with great anticipation) I really don’t pick up distinct florals here, they’re just seamlessly blended in to round out the grass notes and prevent any sharpness. Jean-Claude Ellena was inspired by the rooftop garden of the Hermes building, a private tranquil oasis above the busy streets of Paris. I’ve seen photos of this rooftop garden at it definitely looks like a place where I could easily lose an entire day to reveries. This is actually better than the discontinued crowd favorite GAP Grass because it’s realistic but also smells expensive, higher quality with a French chic that GAP could never have achieved. Makes me excited to picnic with friends this summer, sipping riesling and nibbling on sliced fruit. Un Jardin Sur le Toit is not a head turner, but it is fresh, youthful and bubbly.

Just tried it for the first time. The beginning isn’t too pleasant for me, there is a prominent dill note which luckily disappears in about 10 minutes. And it’s just beautiful after that. The dry down is really nice.

  19. :

    5 out of 5

I recently tried this Jardin. Apple and green grass and something else vaguely elusive. They’re not terribly well blended I must say and overall it fells like an uninspired instance of the Jardin formula which by this point has become redundantly bland, old and boring. It’s fresh for sure, but well, it doesn’t feel like perfume. I’m afraid JC Ellena may have been on autopilot when he “created” this. Oh and obviously after 10 minutes, poof, it’s all gone. Underwhelming would be an over the top exaggeration for this one. Fail !

  20. :

All I will say is the dry down is what makes this frangrance outstanding.

To me, this smells like a cool morning in late summer…green grass wet with heavy dew, roses blooming in the garden and apples ripening on the tree. I’m really looking forward to wearing this when summer finally arrives in my part of the world.
That being said…I bought this in the middle of what was a very cold, seemingly never-ending winter. I couldn’t wait to try it, so sprayed a little on just before going for a long walk across a frozen lake in February. Well into the walk, despite the low temperature, my parka was getting to be too warm, so I unzipped it a bit. The aroma of Un Jardin sur le Toit wafted out into the crisp, frozen air and oh my gosh did it smell good! This is not what I would consider a snuggly, comforting wintertime scent, but I have worn it several times during this long, deep freeze and have not regretted it. I think the rose aspect is warm enough to keep it from feeling too ‘bracing’ in the icy weather. The green and fruit aspects give a clean, freshly-showered impression, which is a good way to smell no matter what the season. I find this to be a happy, upbeat scent that really perks me up.
I also really enjoy how different this is from anything else I wear, which I think comes down to the fresh cut grass note. I have always loved that smell but never envisioned wearing it on my body. This scent has clearly captured fresh cut grass and blended it beautifully with notes that naturally compliment it, so it is compatible with skin and smells real and very appealing.

Ah, this is wonderful! Very fresh, not soapy, and not citrusy. It reminds me of Dior Farenheit in the cut grass note, makes it as unique as Farenheit, which I love. By the same token, I feel like it is unisex. When the herbal sweetness comes through I forget about Farenheit and just feel invigorated. I sprayed one spritz on my neck, and could smell it throughout the day till late evening. It also reminds me of an Oriflame perfume “Energising” for women.

Living in SW Florida it’s tough to find warm weather scents that arent generic smelling. This is lush, fruity, and very grassy on my skin. As expected the performance isnt beast but do you really need it in 90° and 100% humidity? I’m digging this and I’m not a huge Hermes fan. Its clean and green. Nice addition to anyones collection who lives in a tropical climate.

  24. :

    5 out of 5

I despise the smell of fresh mown grass in real life, but I really like Un Jardin Sur Le Toit. It’s strange, this totally has a grassy note, but it’s not as overwhelming as grassy smells can sometimes be (at least to me – I know many people love them).
Besides the green grass note, I mainly get sweet apple and juicy pear, but there are also some warm, herbal and spicy notes. A hint of basil, something earthy… The florals aren’t as prominent to my nose, they just round the scent. Overall this is such a beautiful composition, it’s very well blended, fresh, natural and elegant. Another plus is that it keeps its freshness all through the drydown.
While I think it smells feminine on me, I guess men could wear it too without raising any eyebrows. It’s fruity and aromatic at the same time, it neither smells like a girly pink fruity-floral, nor like a sharp tart men’s cologne, just like a perfect summer refreshment.

GORGEOUS! I am in Love!! Fresh,Green, Clean,Soft, long lasting, I can smell the grass, the apples, the rose and pears, I softly get another floral which I guess is the magnolia. It is so beautiful! I feel it’s so unique, it’s not what a typical perfume would smell like. This instantly transports me to a green lush garden, full of vines with delicate flowers, fruits lightly misted by the rain..Oh!It’s so pretty! So perfect for spring! If you enjoy fresh/fruity,fresh/floral green scents you have to try this one!

Master perfumer Jean-Claude Elena is at the wheel, driving the scent profile of apple and pear beyond my usual disdain of fruit dominant scents. A true artist at work, and I’m singing his praises.
This is pear and apple forward for the first 15 minutes then transparent grassy notes come in along with the rose. With a bit of sour earth undertone, but it’s all very natural. In fact, that’s one of the reasons I like the apple and pear in this composition, they never turn synthetic, they are never sticky sweet.
I’ve tried all of the Jardin series, and I appreciate what each one delivers. Un Jardin sur Le Toit seems the most unique of the lot, and I like wearing it on weekends. Though there are apparently only a few notes, JLT is not linear, and if you pay attention you can pick up on different scent nuances as it dries down. I enjoy this perfume.

Why is it that when I vote what age category and sex it’s for every other category changes? Anyways, this smells moldy in a very fresh kind of way, like the kind of mold in soil. This is a neat perfume for sure.

I love this perfume even though it´s not a typical scent for me:) I don´t think it´s romantic or sexy or clean but it´s also not too heavy! It´s so special, so hard to describe!!
I don´t feel any rose in here… It´s fresh, green, woody but also deep and longlasting and unique:) My boyfriend once bought me body lotion (knowing that I was addicted to nice smells) when he was bored at the airport. I immediately fell in love with it and bought a litte 5ml tester of this heaven in bottle.
I think it´s a scent for mature woman (can be even in her late 20´s, but should be ellegant and self-confident).
I wear it just to the theatre :)I still feel a bit too young for it, even though I love it…it´s not a scent that I would use for some intimate moments…but definitely when you want to feel ellegant and strong and free… it has a bit of “unisex” mood and on some girls it turns to a very masculin scent…but always beautiful…I prefer to wear it in spring.. in summer it doesn´t fit too much to my skin.
Anyway, you can feel it´s a special and high quality perfume:)All the Hermes perfumes are very special and you can detect them easily..I think they do a great job even though they are not my signatures.

A grassy evanescent perfume that gets better and better. I liked it from the start, but somehow I liked it more when I knew what the notes were. Clear and refreshing, it reminds me of the Stevie Nicks song whose lyrics say:
“Do you always trust your first initial feeling
Special knowledge holds truth, bears believing . . .
In the crystaline knowledge of you . . .
    Drove me through the mountains
Through the crystal, like a clear water fountain”
The mountain being the rooftops of Paris. The crystaline knowledge, the crystal clear feeling of the perfume. And the garden growing grass, apple, rose, and pear, all fresh and noticeable once I recognized them in the accord. (Together, they smell a bit like Lily-of-the Valley – which is what someone told me was what the scent smelled like to them). All of these are in Hermes’ rooftop garden, its inspiration. I picture Jean-Claude Ellena getting outside on a glorious spring day, a relief from the stuffiness of offices and labs. It must have seemed like a welcome breathing space.
I smell the rose from Rose Ikebana, balanced with a green aura from apple and pear. Like RI, this is translucent, with an ephemeral quality that I really love. It makes the springtime freshness seem all the more precious. Beautiful artwork, a literal painting of Hermes’ garden in fragrance.

I got this version tonight, having never smelled them, but it wasn’t the one I had read about that I wanted….it’s fine thought I did get a great deal it was 50 dollars Canadian for a 100mls or maybe 90mls it’s the larger bottle either way. Ive only been wearing it for like an hour but I find it smells almost like an earthy, planty….I don’t know how else to
Describe. I definitely wouldn’t have spent that much money had I known it wasn’t the right one 🙁 but it’s okay

I’ve being fighting for a long time my impulses to buy this perfume. I’ve been in love with it since a few years now, but never purchase it afraid I would, as with any other fragrance, to get sick of it soon. But time passed and I always get myself bathing in a sample of this. It has everything I want from a perfume: It has a delightful opening, but doesn’t change so much with time (a bit yes, but doesn’t develop like others). It’s green, but not so masculine, it is fruity but not too feminine. It doesn’t have strong sillage, but it has great longevity. I love the bottle, the name, the package, the weirdness of Hermès. I love it is not so popular, yet it’s accessible. Just one con: I can’t imagine to wear it in cold weather. Now I know that even if i’ll keep my scent-research and fall in love with something else, un jardin sur le toit will always be a big love!

My #1 perfume which stuck with me since the first time I’ve tested it at a duty free shop.
I have never worn a perfume so unique before and although there was some weirdness in this scent when tried on tester stick, after spraying on the skin, I have realised – it’s the one.
I have finished my first bottle and will treat myself to this perfume again in Spring, as this is such a refreshing, bright and summery fragrance. Absolutely love it and had compliments on it. It’s great for those who like something a bit different.

Hmmm… I sprayed this and disliked it from first sniff. I smell sharp grass that is Spicy at the same time. No fruit or flowers. Not what I was hoping for

  35. :

    4 out of 5

This is weird but perfect. At first sniff, it smells so masculine; green/unripe limes, coriander, with some amber or leather almost.
Then, the fruity floral kicks in and it smells totally different–instead of just green it smells like green florals, like you’re in a botanical garden. It still smells earthy and fresh but a bit sweeter thanks to the fruit/floral notes.
At the very end, you get a delicate, clean scent without being soapy. The thing I admire about this is that at the very end of the dry down, you still get wafts of the opening and the middle. I rarely see that with many perfumes, so this is really cool/weird in that aspect.
Overall, pretty unisex but leaning towards feminine on me at least. I love to wear this in the spring since it’s fresh and very well-blended. It smells cool so it’s good for the office. Overall a very unique scent and I recommend a try at the very least.

Hermes fragrances are very different from anything more widely available on the market.
This was love at first glance. I got drunk by the scent. Was the second perfume of the brand I bought and definitely justified my expectations. I do not even know how to describe it because all the ingredients are in incredible harmony and create a real sense of enjoyment.

    I’ve tried
Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Toit
    Hermès Un Jardin En Mediterranee
Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Nil
The stronger is 1. Mediterranee, 2. Sur de Nil, 3. Sur le toit. With that order.
All of them are soft and smooth scents, very pleasant for summer daytime, which open quite feminine but they turn unisex at the drydown. Anyone can wear them but on a woman they will shine as they slightly lean towards feminine imo except Sur de Nil which is unisex from the start till the end.
    Performance.
Sillage is moderate to soft to all of them. The longevity of the Sur le toit is about 3-3.5 hours. The Mediterranee and the Sur de Nil are about the same with the first having more presence, more body and more interesting scent from the Sur de Nil which is nothing more than a smooth citrus scent. The longevity is about 4.5 hours. I need to test these two again..
Quality is obvious to all of them. Smooth pleasant scents, just Hermes.

This smells so lovely in the bottle, but on my skin it’s overpoweringly sweet. It’s clearly a work of art, but lingers far too long. Final nail in the coffin, my fiance hates it. If anyone wants to trade something let me know.

This is exquisite and just what I’ve been craving . Could not get it out of mind since I tried it. Bought myself a FB last week and I’m thrilled with it now that its getting warmer.
So fresh, sweet and sour at the same time. I definitely get the fresh Grass and the sweet apple, the pear making it slightly sour so that is never too sweet. I do smell the gorgeous magnolia peeping through into the dry down .
A great addition to my wardrobe , I think I’m going to get lots of wear out of it this coming spring and summer.

  48. :

I purchased this blindly as my first Hermes fragrance and it makes me want to collect more.
Un Jardin sur le Toit a very intriguing, captivating, and singular fragrance and I have nothing like it. It’s modern, clever, creative, chic, and lavish, which is an unexpected surprise for such a refreshingly green, herbaceous fragrance.
I mostly get fresh cut grasses and herbs, mingled with ripe fruit (crisp, ripe apple and juicy, overripe Bosc pears), and just a hint of flowers (rose and a bouquet of white flowers). It’s definitely a fresh, green fragrance on me. I get compliments whenever I wear it. Sillage is moderate, bordering on heavy and it lasts all day and into the evening on me. It reminds me of my childhood summers in rural France, lying on the grass under the trees next to my Aunt’s herb garden. 🙂

A very interesting perfume. It can be very sweet, cantaloupe notes are very clear since the first smell.
All Hermés perfumes have very interesting personalities. Compared with other brands, are very sophisticated and unique, as the price dictates. Less expensive than the ordinary brands.
Avoid use more than one spray has a long sillage and a reasonable longevity for all day long.
Smelling sur le toit makes me feel naughty and younger. Is not a serious perfum but an special one. If you are in the mood to be fun and naughty this is the good one. Spring and summer is the perfect season, but because of their sweetness is apropriate for the fall too. Enjoy it.

Here is a more than nice frag…the kind of displaying the perfect heavy freshness, if one could conceive such a thing. A cool blend of clean rain and carefully chosen spices that make your nose bask in some sort of savory sunshine. It is not the kind of innocent, unoffensive smell, you need a little boldness to carry it along but it is more than worthwhile. Nor it is easiest to adopt but hey, once you do it, it will be long term fondness

Darn! The cat wants nothing to do with me until I scrub this off.
One spray, dried to let settle, and when I approached her, backed up 4 feet away. She will not let me near her.
(She’s very tolerant of most of fragrances so this must have something unpleasant for that strong a negative reaction.)
Another Yeah! for samples. This will be passed along.

One of my very favorite green perfumes. I want to drink it, it’s so delicious. Wearing this, I’m back to my childhood, lying on the grass in the hot California sun, picking small blue flowers off a rosemary plant that’s giving me shade, and rolling the blossoms under my fingers to heighten the fragrance. A magnolia tree is overhead, and I catch whiffs of that too. I’m not getting much rose or pear but they are perhaps the background scents of this summer afternoon. Mostly, I smell the deep green, fresh mowed grass and rosemary and a perfect day.
Mr. Ellena pictured a garden on a rooftop and I can see that-the lovely aromatics that will be picked by a chef later that afternoon for the evening meal, bugs zooming about, and the breeze blowing scents and sounds of a city toward you as you are in an island of peace.
Once again, an absolutely beautiful, evocative fragrance by one of the greatest artists in the world of perfume. I have 2 mls to test it and this one is now on my list to get a full bottle. Mr.Ellena, you are attacking my bank account!

    Tested from dauber bottle
This wasn’t at all what I was expecting. I really get a sweet floral magnolia with a heavy green grass and melon. The pear is more of a background note adding the the fresh and sweetness. While it wasn’t what I was looking for it is a nice combination of fresh and floral
Sadly the longevity was about two hours and that will not do.

This is divine! A truly georgeous green scent! It starts off with dewy sweet green grass and juicy crunchy red delicious apple! Soon a velvety red rose and prickly pear come out! It gets sweeter and has a warmness to it. The dry down smells completely of rose and smells a lot like Paul Smith rose. It becomes more feminine but still very unisex. I get 5 hours longevity and sillage starts off an arms length and then remains a nice fragrant bubble around me until the last hour when it becomes a skin scent. I don’t become nose blind to this like I do with other scents when I can’t smell it any more but others can. It’s just amazing! Smells like real scents in nature! At times I’m reminded of being a child riding on the back of a wagon my dad had hooked up to the lawn mower while he mowed grass! I love the smell of fresh cut grass!

Annick Goutal Petite Cherie vs. Hermes Un Jardin Sur Le Toit:
The opening in both is quite similar:
While they share a lot of the notes, Petite Cherie (PC) is a stronger scent than Jardin Sur Le Toit (JST). What I mean by stronger is: although they are both light fragrances, the volume in PC is a little higher, the scent of pear is more pronounced in PC, and PC is also sweeter than JST, which seems to me to be a more sheer scent.
The middle is where these fragrances begin to differ:
JST’s facets begin to morph, now the pear is not so accentuated; the pear is always there and it is the star, but now the fragrance becomes more green, the fresh dewy grass is more prevalent and also the florals begin to settle in. I love the process of transition in a fragrance. I find its nuance very sophisticated. I especially enjoy it in lighter fragrances because the changes are subtle. They are a perfect invitation during weekends to just sit down for 20 minutes and enjoy the journey the scent wants to take me on.
In contrast, PC is more linear, the fragrance basically smells the same as it did in the opening, except I perceive it as more synthetic, this is the part where I can see other people’s comments about shampoo come into play. There is a powdery aspect here (not powdery as in iris, powdery as in it makes the back of my throat itchy).
    The dry down:
At this point, they are clearly different fragrances. the pear in PC is sweet, tart and playful, while the pear in JST has a grassy green, fresh approach with its sweetness being drawn from the floral accords, which makes it more polished and sophisticated.
In my view, PC is the the little sister with freshly washed hair, wearing a summer dress and running around the orchard filling her apron with pears, stumbling and giggling, while JST is the older sister, sitting at the garden’s table under the shade of the pear tree, reading a book and sipping pear infused sparkling water.
I think temperature plays a big part on making the decision. Even if we are talking about summer/daytime fragrances, there’s a difference: if I am in Seattle or in London for example, I might be more inclined to wear PC, just because I would crave fragrances that brought a little more sunshine into my day. This is a little sweeter ergo warmer. However, if I am in Sao Paulo or Barcelona, I would prefer the polished coolness of JST.
    Sillage: is low on both.
Longevity: PC has slightly more longevity than JST. Both fragrances turn into a skin scent for me within 2 to 3 hours. These are not fragrances one buys for maximum performance at minimum cost.
To extend longevity I dab a little body lotion of JST on the areas where I intend to spray. I find this extends the scent to approx. 4 to 5 hours on a hot day, before they turn into a skin scent. Heat also helps maintain the scent alive.

Beautiful bottle, looks great in my collection. Unfortunately got rid of it because nowadays i only collect fragrances that i actually like and can wear. This one to me was wayyyyy too fruity and very feminine for a male in his 30’s to wear. My all time favorite from this line will still be sur le nil

It smells like you are lying on a tuft of fresh green grass on a summer day. But I was told by my male friends that I smelled like bug spray. Oh well….

It’s like eating sweet apples and pears, whilst sitting in the garden in the morning dew. Wonderfully sweet and refreshing at the same times. It’s sweet, but not icky. The green notes make it elegant. Perfect for summer and easy going picnics.
I have the whole Jardin line, and I can’t decide which is my favourite in it. It changes every time. I’m just glad I can enjoy the wonderfully fresh, elegant and unique perfumes.

I love this on initial spray. It’s fresh, very green and smiles. Great for spring and summer. There’s something that smells very Hermes or Ell
