Ceilstranka says in her review below that Patsy Cline wore Tabu. How perfect. Can’t you just see her with her husband in a honky tonk drinking bourbon and coke and smelling of Tabu? I can so clearly. I love Tabu. I have a couple of small vintage violins that I dab from on the rare occasion. I had a large spray bottle but we parted company somewhere down the road. Tabu is a comfort scent for me. I can wear it and it doesn’t wear me for some odd reason. I’m too chicken to wear it out much but it is definitely an indulgence for at home. The dusting powder is very tolerable, softer of course, and mine is almost empty. I hope I can still replace it. Recent powder is fine, but the vintage liquid is vastly superior to new, and it holds up well in the bottle over time. This is a Jean Carle creation. I like his Miss Dior, too, as well as Dana Canoe (I think). If I dressed up as Patsy Cline for Halloween I would drench myself in Tabu.
Black off – :
My beauty is back.. it’s that time of year again. I could wax poetic about Tabu until the end of time, as evidenced by my previous two reviews of her.. but I only came to say that it’s also amazing layered with Obsession, another favorite, as well as Magie Noire which I don’t own but was privileged enough to sample a vintage bottle owned by a friend of mine. Sometimes enchanted, maybe even obsessed, but always taboo.
tannachka – :
I didn’t understand Tabu until I wore Molinard Patchouli.
Then it clicked into place and I could appreciate its key note.
On me it is root beer (wintergreen) and patchouli.
Others mention powder, sweetness and incense. I concur. More incense would be great…hope the drydown will provide.
I bought Tabu several months ago and sniff every few weeks because I hate it so much but cannot say why.
Today no hate.
Either the bottle changed (drugstore mini, a year old) or my nose did.
Later…
I’m picking up the neroli and citrus, and the carnation a bit.

I love this scent because it was everywhere when I was a kid. No one in my family would ever have worn it, to be sure, but trashy girls on the bus smelled like this and my best friend’s mom who drank wore this from time to time. Who knows why but this is a comfort scent to me due to layers of memories and nostalgia. I can’t be objective about Tabu, and I would never wear it except when I am by myself, especially by myself and reading a good book on a cold day or listening to seventies rock albums. Liquid time capsule and a genius study in beautiful cheapness.
imikhaltsov – :
This is my future mother in laws signature scent and when we bought it for her the first time I sprayed it and hated it as upon initial spray it’s very typical, cloying and overly sweet old lady perfume but on her it’s not so bad actually ! Not exactly my favorite scent but on her it’s kind of semi spicy, smoky, but also a little sweet as well. It’s a little dated at this point but certain people may be able to pull this off. Also to point out is that she’s a smoker and actually the cigarette smoke enhances this scent and honestly makes it better as on its own I’m not as big a fan.
Performance on her is quite good as I’ve smelled it on her for 8 and even 10 hours later. As far as projection goes it does project for about 30 minutes but then becomes a strong skin scent.
Overall rating-6 out of 10 ! This scent is a bit dated and not the best scent but it’s not disgusting to my nose like other scents of this time period were.

This was what bar flies wore in the late ’50s and ’60s. The cheap woman’s perfume. I’ve smelled it since then in drug stores and it’s still sticky, slutty and suffocating. But, if you like those qualities…
aeg810Diobtetty – :
sorry ,it smells like someone had an accident and tried to cover it up with talcom powder. very thrift store pee pee crotch pants vibe. or fresh baby diapers with the old wrapping of nag champa sticks. somewhat a very crude l’heure bleue by guerlain or along the lines or ted lapidus’ white soul’ and some old school stetson cologne for men thrown in, rubbing shoulders with obsession for women for sure. a smidgen of revlon ice fire perhaps…’ milky warm’
i would not affiliate this with any oriental giants, its just too powdery and cheap. its heady but not in a sexy amber benzoin oriental way. more in a hide something up way. just cant shake it ,where is that maple syrup pee smell coming from?
please dont downvote someones review if theyve actually taken time to even try discern notes, i have tested this several times over 3 years, its just not for everyone, not everyone gets reassuring vibes from it. i bought tabu because of everyone raving, its really really really not a hidden gem in this gen where we have a huge array of niche orientals to choose from.
конокрад – :
I bought this last year, and brought it out of storage with a whole bunch of my fall and winter frags and like so many of my others I’m embarrassed to say, never really gave it a proper wearing.
I really like it and wow, for something that has ostensibly gone through so many reforms, it is remarkably beautiful and has great longevity. Tomorrow I’ll be wearing this very lovely thing, sweetly spicy and warm, so suitable for fall.
Suirearnecync – :
Tabu is all root beer, powder, and church incense on me, and I don’t mind. Although it does remind me of the way literally every single art teacher I ever had smelled. Again, I don’t mind 🙂
infephesonorp – :
Tabu is a sweet, powdery and lightly spiced scent on me.
Lasts a long time. Not cheap smelling on me at all.
I have all price ranges in my fragrance collection.
Tabu is a favorite always. Nice. Elegant on me.
ZoNa111 – :
For those who know Original Sin (2001 film), this is exactly what Bonny (Angelina Jolie) would wear. An old, dusty smell – also vulgar, sensual, depraved, but you end up loving it.
Opanas – :
The EdT version of Tabu is warm, sensual, seductive and VERY long lasting. Reminds me of aspects contained within Estee Lauder’s Youth Dew, which, as a man, I will happily wear in moderation. I use Tabu cologne to create a less long lasting impression and wear it in the office. My skin chemistry tones down the impact somewhat, making Tabu EdC into a rich oriental with reasonable projection and longevity without the massive attention grabbing profile of other versions. I can detect it on my skin after three hours and clothing for about another three hours beyond that. If you are a fan of orientals then you should try this one and, given the price point, you can hardly go wrong!
Fender – :
I thought my nose was playing tricks on me when I kept picking up notes of cola or root beer but in reading the reviews here, I see that I am not alone! I also catch the occasional hint of a colder note that is almost like a mint scent that is not unpleasant, but oddly enough it only shows up on my skin when I wear Tabu in the winter. I rarely wear Tabu outside of Fall/Winter months as on me it does not really lend itself to being worn in warmer temperatures. It is one of my favorite go-to scents to start wearing in late October to mid-November as it lingers on everything I wear in the best possible way.
This is not a fragrance for the weak! If you let it push you around it absolutely will. I save it for days when I want to be noticed professionally but also left the hell alone. As one who adores “big” perfumes, this one is always going to be in my collection.
vadiostuma – :
This perfume makes me happy. It’s a warm, friendly, amber hug on me. Stays close to the skin all day. It reminds me a little of Obsession. The opening root beer note is prominent but later fades to a spicy, smoky amber. Tabu is aromatherapy to my nose and I adore it.
bombermanic – :
This perfume is totally different on different people. More so than just normal skin chemistry. It can be smoky and deep and sexy or cheap and chalky. I’ve experienced this myself. On me, it’s just nice…slightly cola, candied orange peel with some mild spices.. I have the older version which I prefer, the newer one is root beer heavy. On one lady I know, it smelled oddly sweet almost like candy pez, wintergreen, and cigarettes. Not good. Another lady I work with wears it and I didn’t even recognize it! It smelled expensive, intriguing and oriental/ smoky with vanilla and incense.
How weird is it that skin chemistry changes so much? Just ask people about Angel.
I’m glad I can wear this on occasion but it truly suits certain people better than others. I understand why some people call it a ” masterpiece” and others call it ” cheap”. Because it can be both.
Nokyo – :
I actually did get rootbeer out of this, which I don’t much like but can appreciate. I think I also smell incense in here, which is the only thing I really like about Tabu. I don’t hate it, it’s simply not the kind of scent I can wear. I may test it again in the future.
dimasmoscow – :
I was so excited to try this after reading its history- 1932, “perfume for a whore,” and all that. I even found a vintage bottle (80s or 90s).
I almost suspect my bottle was adulterated. It just smells like cheap, horrible patchouli. No root beer, no florals, just straight, choking patchouli. Perhaps this was a scent that was exotic, dangerous or seductive in 1932; in 2018 it smells like a teenage girl’s shoplifted it from American Eagle and is now bumming cigarettes outside a 7/11.
But… As I morosely sat sniffing it on myself I thought, “This smells cheap… I smell cheap… I FEEL cheap… cheap like a cheap whore?” (Patou’s words- I absolutely support sex workers.) This last thought unexpectedly cheered me up, and suddenly I felt sexy. Sometimes trashy & obvious is just the vibe you want to give off! I’m going to wear this next time I go on a Tinder date.

Here’s an interesting anecdote for TABU fans …
A friend of mine had the pleasure of dancing with Patsy Cline back in the 1950s. This occurred at a club in the Washington, DC area, when he was around 18. He recognized the perfume she was wearing. It was TABU.

Before searching for a vintage bottle on eBay, I’ve found a gorgeous gift set on amazon, including
– 75ml Eau De Cologne Spray
– 75ml Perfumed Body Lotion
– 75ml Perfumed Body Wash
– 50g Dusting Powder
– Refillable Purse Spray
with incredibly low price, so why not.
My cat immediately jumped off my lap, as soon as I opened the edc spray cap. WOW, this is a monster!!
I decided to use the body wash first which was too dandy for me but finished it up anyway after runningout of my usual body wash.
During winter, only when I was oudoor far away from my beloved cats,I used the dandy smelling body lotion as a hand cream thinking, no Japanese girl nor lady would buy such a muskulin cream for herself.
Now, the climate is becoming hot and humid, I am quite enjoying the dust powder which is scented lighter than other items. After taking a long hot bath every day, it is easier to get dressed with body powder on myself. How come I didn’t know such tactic all these years? I’m very happy to know this. Also, I’m enjoying using the dust powder as an alternative to perfume. No anxious for others on a crowded train.
Finally, the edc, I can only wear it with diluting the silage in half with non scented skin lotion in an atomizer. The faint incency oriental atmosphere very close to my skin lasts two to three hours which is long enough for me and my cats can stay quiet on my lap is the very important factor.
When I wear diluted TABU edc with dusting powder, the smell bring back memories of the ‘60s when I was living in Alexandria Virginia. The teacher, the housewife who lived across the street, the face of the President Richard Nixon on the news, the APOLO 11 moon landing. . . I get very nostalgic.

Impossible to forget.
I was so curious to try Tabu after reading his history and especially the fact that is one ofthe first orientals.
I ordered a lot of bottles,and i liked it a lot.
But to me Tabu speaks a different language, different than what i mostly see in many other review and articles ..probably because of the fragrances that i smelled on many people during my childood.
Indeed the first thing that i tought when i tried Tabu was: “so familiar,so powerful,so beautiful and so masculine!” I’m sure that i smelled something similar on and older relative or on some of his friends.
Spicy, warm, ambery,my inexperienced nose feel some orange, maybe is the association with a cozy room in winter with a bowl full of spices and orange peels near the radiator.
In my opinion the modern version is totally unisex.
I find it very similar to Must by Cartier.
One spray fills up the room, last on the skin even after a shower and on clothes last until laundry day.
I was in my late teens when i bought my bottles and i was too shy and didn’t wear it outside, only late at night in my room, just for relaxing and enjoing the beautiful scent.
The warmth of this fragrance makes it ideal for the colder season but i enjoyed wearing Tabu also during summer,i love spices all year long.
Now i want to wear Tabu at nightime, with nice clothes and lot of makeup. I wore it after months and is exactly how i remembered it:unique, warm and so familiar at the same time.
As i said at the beginning is impossible to forget,is very elegant,it makes me think about a very refined and confident lady with lots of jewelry.
Edit:lately i’m catching whiffs of Tabu or something almost identical on some ladies in my town. It’s very courious because is not sold anymore in my country so i guess that they have to order it. Especially one older lady, super elegant original and fashionable was leaving a trail of this gorgeous scent.

I freaking adore Tabu. I love the controversy, the history, the vibe, the memories and images it evokes, the beautiful blend of so many of my favorite notes, the color, the violin bottle, the price. I’ve reviewed Tabu before but I inexplicably feel the need to say even more about this beloved fragrance of mine because I love it so! It’s one of the few that lasts all day on me as well, which is an added plus for my notoriously perfume-devouring skin.
I have so many perfumes, some rather expensive that I should be using more, but I always come back to Tabu as my favorite. Crushes come and go but true love lasts forever right? Yes it is cheap, in both price and reputation….although I prefer to call it salacious 😉 It is definitely a suggestive scent but still SO wearable in the right amount, which is one spray. That’s it. One spray. Any more than that and yes it is cumbersome and “cheap”… anything in excess can ruin something beautiful. But one spray is perfection…all the notes play and blend so well together into such a rich and complex array of rose, patchouli, amber, spices, sandalwood, incense, civet, dusty sweet treasure chest wood.. fascinating gorgeousness!
I used to say Poison Esprit de Parfum was “my Shalimar” but actually Tabu is it. Don’t get me wrong, I have lots of love for both Poison and Shalimar, but Tabu just has that certain something that makes me go through a 3 oz bottle quicker than I do my 1 oz bottles of everything else.. I’ll start out the day wearing one fragrance, and end up ending the day with Tabu.. I just can’t help myself. It’s so comforting, so warm, so good! I beg anyone that loves oriental heavies to give this one a try, and see if you don’t fall in love.. 🙂
evolernet – :
My mother had a bottle of Tabu back in the 80’s, the rectangular splash bottle with the black cap. I remember being fascinated by that cola-coloured liquid, darker than any other perfume I’d seen. The perfume itself was intimidating and I never dared open that cap, even though I used to love playing with the bottle. Good thing I didn’t drop it!
Tabu has always stayed in my mind as a relic of the late 70’s-early 80’s. I was surprised to learn it was much older. I never considered trying it though until a reawakened interest in perfume combined with a nostalgia kick prompted me to order a bottle.
I’ll put my hand up and admit I always considered Tabu to be dated, and more than a little cheap. The big, clunky violin shaped bottle that I got for less than a tenner didn’t do a lot to convince me otherwise. The first spray made me want to stand back. Whoa! But hiding in that loud blast was a scent I recognised from all those years ago. More than that, I soon discovered that I love Tabu.
Such a warm, rich fragrance, with a cola note for sure, but it doesn’t detract from the perfume. It’s warm and comforting; spice and flowers with a touch of Rum and Coke. Maybe even Grand Marnier, I can smell a hint of orange in there. It’s sexy, but in a friendly sort of way, not so aggressive and in-your-face as YSL Opium. With a light touch I find it easy to wear just about anywhere. A great scent for winter or to warm up a cold, rainy day. Maybe my bottle has mellowed but it seems like that Pow! opening has gone, too.
(Talking of bottles, I ended up with two bottles of Tabu, the violin-shaped one and a sort of tall, fan shaped bottle that came with a gift set. I can’t put my finger on why, but the violin bottle was much nicer. I don’t know if the other bottle had gone off but it just didn’t smell as good.)

I have wanted to love Tabu for as long as I’ve known about her–a perfume for a lady of the night sounds right up my alley. But alas! The strange, brash soda-pop opening has always turned me off it, resolved never to try it again. But as I said, I want to love her, so last night I put her on again.
Again I was confused and disappointed. But I woke up this morning, some dozen hours after application, to a fantastic warm powdery scent emanating from somewhere. I struggled to place it, then realized it must be Tabu! Yes, a sniff of my pajama top confirmed the suspicion. Glorious.
I’m torn. Do I want to submit to her at last? Will I suffer through the opening to witness her glorious dry-down? The saga continues.

Everything that needs to be said has already been said. Tabu was created in 1932 – and we are still talking about it in 2018. And what more – we´re not just talking about it, we are wearing & enjoying Tabu, isn´t it amazing? This fragrance has been verified in the course of time. It has its own character, personality & unbreakable warm heart. Yes, it´s retro – but it´s absolutely wearable & timeless. Mr. Jean Carles didn´t create just a perfume – he created a signature of his era.
– just by the way –
If someone told me this fragrance is the newest creation of Christopher Sheldrake for Serge Lutens line, I would trust it.

Every time I wanted to make a blind buy, I looked over Tabu and ended up not buying it. Because honestly, I have been a little scared of it. It’s suppose to be a crazy spicy powerhouse. This time I actually purchased it, finally, and I love it! I cannot believe how warm, cozy, sweet and beautiful this fragrance is and thinking how many times I could have enjoyed it… I am so so glad I finally got to try this one and own it. If they’re going to or have already changed the formulation, I will need to get a backup bottle. It’s so beautiful…
Update: I’m back here to praise this perfume just a bit more!
This has become a favorite so quickly, and that’s saying something! I have smelled and own so many fragrances that I sometimes think no fragrance is really a “favorite”, they’re just all beautiful, and some are very beautiful. This however, has surpassed all my expectations. I thought I wasn’t a big fan of spicy perfumes. And I’m not a huge fan of the spicy perfumes that are super strong, such as Kenzo Jungle.
I absolutely adore Tabu, it is never cloying. Which a lot of perfumes in this category are to me. I wish they could make a Tabu flanker with a more prominent rose. A rose prominent Tabu perfume would also be perfect <3
Update: Just scored a vintage squared bottle of this stuff on eBay for a great price and I’m so excited!
PavelUS – :
I had an ah-ha moment when I tried vintage Tabu for the first time. Suddenly Youth Dew, Opium and Coco made perfect sense—they were descendants of Tabu. Perfumer Jean Carles approach seems based on the premise that if the oriental genre is built from forceful materials and ferocious tones, why disguise it with tassels and trim? Why try to tame it?
Tabu backs up its vaguely threatening name with a strapping, seductive fragrance. It’s an intimidating perfumes. The combination of aggressive, spiced florals and powdered leather is just one example of the hard/soft conflict seeded throughout Tabu. (Spoiler alert: the hard edge always wins.) Tabu investigates olfactory extremes without dicking around with the comfortable center. Vanillic amber oriental perfumes often dive straight for the soft middle ground and wind up a bit eye-glazey. The trap for the perfumer is emphasizing coziness at the expense of spine and coming up with olfactory comfort food.
Tabu’s dense powdery opening is in fact sweet but it’s a red herring. As the sweetness of the topnote settles, the acerbic edge of the spiced resin accord comes forward to create a fascinating counterbalance. The powder lasts well into the long-arc heartnotes and the way that it’s cantilevered off the bitter base of resins focusses attention more on texture than aroma. The cinnamon-clove spices have a similarly tricky balancing act. They alternate between hot and cold without ever dwindling to lukewarm. Carles seems willing to concede the aesthetic middle ground, finding more value at the ends of the spectrum. Tabu is technically an oriental but had as much in common with the big tobacco and leather perfumes of the 20s and 30s as it did with the recumbent Shalimar. No fear of lack of spine here.
Jacques Guerlain’s Shalimar is considered the superlative oriental perfume, and for valid reasons. It has superior form and elaborate, sophisticated style. It also has a larger-than-life Auntie Mame quality. Next to Shalimar’s layered, accessorized style, Tabu cames off as starched and corseted. Carles’ style was less opulent than Guerlain’s but not a bit less complex. Carles differed from Guerlain in that he found that the richness of the oriental was not in the drape but in the tailoring.

Tabu was one of my mother’s perfumes. It smelled great in the bottle, and very nice indeed on her, but on me, not so much. I loved it when she wore it, i disliked it when i wore it. Every once in a while i would smell the bottle, and, yep, it was alluring, rich, mysterious, complex, sexy. Then, on my wrist — nope; too strong, too loud. I felt overtaken by it. So i never bought it. I smelled her bottle when i went to visit her.
StasA – :
My mother wore a number of different perfumes when I was a child, but the one she wore most often, that I will always associate as “the Mom smell” is Tabu.
Tabu is many layers of warmth… amber, clove studded oranges, root beer spiked with Southern Comfort…
but mostly it’s mom. It’s the smell of poking around in her top dresser drawer, it’s the smell of her sweater when you sat close to her, it’s the smell of someone who will take care of me, it is the smell of someone who will punish me. It’s mom all the way and when I once tried a sample of this on my own skin, it felt weird. Like I was wearing someone else’s pantyhose.

On my skin Tabu is unisex. Dark, spicy oriental with a splash of amber, woodsy notes, civet and Cloves. Not oldfashioned, not modern. Timeless – and best i colder weather I think. My Tabu arrived today after a blind buy. What is there to say?
I wasn’t expected something that sweet and enveloping. I read a lot of comments about it and it seemed like an incredible warm, mysterious oriental with insence notes that could remind of Nag Champa’s smell. But unfortunately i don’t get this Nag Champa at all.
I like Youth Dew from Estee Lauder who was supposed to be similar but I can’t really find the common traits in Tabu. They are both strong and heady but Youth Dew has a more strong character.
Tabu makes me think of a classy woman of the 50’s with a warm personnality. This fragrance has something comfy, like a sweet reassuring cocoon. Too reassuring for me. I was expecting something more wild as it has been created “for the ladies of the night”. On the contrary, I find it very well behaved. For those who know Chergui by Lutens, it’s the same kind of warm comfy smell that I’m talking about.
The opening notes remind me of a strong cologne with a lot of alcohol, but it passes by quickly and the sweetness arrives with vanilla and spices. The sillage is strong but the longevity is paradoxically quite poor.
It’s a good smell but it doesn’t fit my personality.
My keywords: Home, comfy, warm, security, prudent, devoted, loyal, cheerful, poised, maternal.

On me it smells like incense-sticks that haven’t been lit yet. As if you walk into that obscure little shop where they sell gemstones, incense and tarot-decks. That is not negative. Please perfume lovers, Don’t thumb down negative reviews if the person is being reasonable, I ask this as they are very helpful for people to get both sides of how the perfumes are to each individual.
If to many thumb down the review disappear from the page, so please be considerate when using the button as its a power we don’t want to use unless we truly have too. Just my opinion of course.
I feel negative reviews are just as important in the forum as not everyone has the same experience.
Many thanks to all the reviews x

I blind bought TABU a while ago, since I read the raving reviews, noted the very affordable price and found the notes appealing.
I was so excited to open it and to try it out! At first spritz, it was definitely strong, but I did initally like the spice bomb men´s cologne vibe it was giving off. It was spicy, warm, slightly sweet and mysterious…
But as time went on it started to annoy me. It just kept going on and on and on. It felt like I had a full spice drawer around my neck and it seemed to get heavier by the minute.
Not only did the overpowering smell give me a headache, but there seems to be a note -that I can’t quite put my finger on- which crept onto me every now and then. Like something sinister, it kept haunting me and filled me with dread, resulting in nausea and even anxiety :/
So… 1/10, will not buy again.

This is my first review on this great site and I wanted to start with an oldie but goody! Tabu!
I used to wear this in my teens, (and it went with cigarettes, leather jackets, and bourbon perfectly!) It may have been richer oh those many years ago, but it is still a great scent! I always make sure that I have some.
Best for colder days imo, the warm spices envelope you. It is such a good price you really cant go wrong.

This is my first flash back Friday review and I have decided to start where it all began, Tabu! I wore Tabu every day for around 12 years, ❤
Tabu for my nose is a amazingly good scent, truly a timeless beauty and I think it’s unisex, sexy and wonderful.
It’s got so much going for it, warm, boozy, powdery, intense, sultry, affordable, easy to find, not everyone is wearing it, it’s interesting and as I said, it’s afordable!
I started wearing this vixen when I was very young and still to this day Tabu is one of my top five and that’s after having sampled hundreds of different perfumes.
I’ve had several different formulas and all are good, old, new, edp, edt, cologne, all wonderful.
Then there is the body lotion and talc, cheap as chips.
Seriously, If you love this scent as much as I do, Always remember, We are the lucky ones! ❤

This is my first time trying this fragrance and I love it! This is the thick, heavy, warm, wrap-me-in-powdery-goodness scent that I love to wear.
I enjoy it from the first spray and top notes, the wonderful middle notes and the dry down. The base notes are really what have me hooked. I smell warm delicious powder and comfort. I kept hugging myself!
I was home sick from work and I wore this to bed, applying it several time during the day. My son complained that it was too strong of a scent.
He is right! Yet I am in love and will keep using this with a bit more care for the delicate noses around me.
The price cannot be beat and is an added bonus.

The modern version is the only one I’ve been able to try, but it is in my top 3 favorites and the violin-shaped bottle looks exquisite on my counter. This fragrance is a beautiful classic, warm and inviting. It somehow reminds me of Dr. Pepper or Coca Cola without it actually smelling like either of those things. It’s deep and nuanced without being heavy or cloying. I feel like I can wear this fragrance anywhere, but my favorite is in a leather armchair with a cigar and a glass of bourbon. I personally don’t really get the scandalous name and sexy backstory for this scent. Compared to some of the outright skanky and screeching scents out there, this is a scent for the woman who goes to the bar alone for a well-made cocktail, not in desperate hopes of getting taken home.
