Description

Tabac Aurea has an enticing golden amber drydown and a pipe tobacco note that is gentle enough to be enjoyed by women as well as men. It’s smooth and softly gourmand, with notes of amber, woods, spices, tobacco, leather, tonka, labdanum, patchouli, and vanilla. The amber accord combines earthy, dry notes with some sweet notes and subtle fruity notes to create a beautiful, woodsy, golden aura.

Perfumer’s Comments: This scent takes a little time to warm up on your skin; it opens with leather and earthy notes but the tobacco gradually blooms over the first 30 minutes and then lasts throughout the drydown. When I first sniffed the rich, sweet scent of blond tobacco absolute years ago, I was very surprised that I loved the smell of it given that I’ve never smoked or been around pipe tobacco. Blond tabac absolute smells like pipe tobacco but is complex with nuances of hay, moss, and woods. The nicotine is removed from tabac absolute during the production process.

Fragrance Notes: Cedar, sandalwood, tobacco, leather, vetiver, patchouli, clove, labdanum absolute, tonka bean, amber, vanilla, musk. Released March 26, 2009. Nos je Laurie Erickson.

I had some samples, and loved this one. I own Winter Woods, and this would have been my next purchase. Every time I was going to buy it I said I didn’t need it. Now that I want it, I can’t buy it due to Laurie selling the company. Learned my lesson from waiting. Awesome scent!

I know that there are no booze notes listed but the opening of this scent smells like fresh / wet tobacco and the sort of boozy scent that skin breathes out after a night of drinking whiskey. It’s not necessarily a bad smell – I think it replicates the scent of tobacco much more realistically than other, sweeter tobacco blends.
I found the opening pungent but interesting – I was a little worried that I smelled too hungover for my morning class today. The drydown is lovely – more of a dry, woody tobacco with a smooth base of sandalwood and warm ambery leathery notes that all blend together. Luckily the vanilla / amber / musk doesn’t go sweet on my skin, and the labdanum doesn’t make it go too powdery leathery. I thought this would be more of a fall scent but it’s an unusually warm and humid day in October and the sandalwood / tobacco drydown is blooming on my skin!
Like many scents from Sonoma, this is lovely and well crafted but at times a touch too photorealistic to be easily wearable. I plan on wearing it, though perhaps only venturing out after the boozy stage has died down a touch.
I gave an extra sample pip to a classmate who loves the smell of her grandfather’s old tobacco pipe – she loved it! Here’s to scent memories and the scents that call them back! 🙂

THIS is what a tobacco scent is meant to be: warm, round, glowing, slightly vegetal and only moderately sweet (there’s none of that Tom Ford/Phaedon treacle in here). It’s mostly linear but the entire duration is lovely as hell.

My best Tobacco Scent in my collection.

I love this. It leans toward masculine but definitely wearable for me, a female. It is warm, rich, vanilla-spicy, and slightly smoky. It is sweet, but not overly so. So, so many cold weather tobacco-sweet scents end up in sugary syrupy Tom Ford country, so I was relieved and pleased to find this one just sweet enough. If I want it drier and smokier, I layer it with SSS incense pure, which is also a great one.
I’m still using my sample vial, so I can apply it sparingly, which is perfect. I can smell it but am confident I’m not projecting it up everyone else’s noses, and I would be comfortable entering a crowded elevator wearing it. When I get my spray bottle of this, I will keep filling up my vial so I can control the amount. I feel sure a spray of it would be way too much, but a few little dabs is perfection. It’s a beautiful scent on my skin, and I don’t get to say that very often!

I dunno, guys… I really really really wanted to like this after reading the reviews. I was/am looking for a tobacco scent that isn’t sickly sweet like TF TV (i get barely any tobacco from that fragrance and all honey, which i hate) and so many other tobacco fragrances, but after having worn a sample of this Tabac Aurea, I just can’t.
To me, and I’m in the vast minority, it seems, the fragrance smells like burnt rubber, pleather (faux leather) and a twist of licorice (which I hate as well lol) for the first couple of hours. It’s vile on my skin. Then it finally softens to a dry tobacco for a second and then moves on to a rancid rotting leaf smell mixed with Indian curry and then finally dries down to a cloyingly sweet aunt jemima pancake syrup… I can’t even say maple syrup…
I do appreciate the vast transformations this scent makes, but I just can’t wear this with any confidence. But like I said, it seems I am in the minority so I suppose that’s good for everyone else. My search for the perfect tobacco scent continues, however…

Tried this out yesterday (sample) before bed, and although it is a good scent, the longevity and projection was pretty tame.
Granted, I only sprayed one time. I’ll try again this weekend with two sprays to see how it goes.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I’ve gotten more unsolicited compliments from people so far from this juice than any other in my 150 plus bottle niche collection, yes even more than Aventus!…

I am a BIG fan of traditional masculine scents, such as Tobacco, and this one has been on my “To Try” list for awhile now. Based on the notes, this is right up my alley, so I broke down and bought a bottle. And I am very glad I did.
I will admit that the initial spray took me by surprise. It is a very light fresh scent, which is not what I was expecting. I had to double check the bottle to make sure I sprayed the right one. Within seconds the tobacco starts to emerge and I know I have the right one.
TA is a warm, dry, a bit dirty scent, that is not sweet at all. A great tobacco scent. Although this is listed as a unisex fragrance, it leans more towards a mature masculine scent IMO.
I agree with CLevol below, although not listed in the notes, I get a heavy Immortelle. So either it is in there, or some combinations of the listed notes give off an Immortelle vibe.
Bottom line: If you like Tobacco scent, you should try this one.

this one is, in a way, similar to ‘white smoke’, but NOWHERE near as resiney or basey. this has more of a myrrh/frankincense vibe about it too.
overall, i prefer white smoke to this, white smoke has more of a ‘real’ feel to it. tabac aurea comes across a bit too synth. nice nonetheless…

Wow! To my surprise this is my favorite one out of the 9 samples I got! (runner ups are Incense Pure & Fireside Intense)
It’s addictively sweet (with a licorice vibe similar to Nicolai’s Cuir Cuba), slightly damp, and sultry

The notes in Tabac Aurea include cedar, sandalwood, tobacco, leather, vetiver, patchouli, clove, tonka bean, labdanum absolute, amber, vanilla, and musk. In both my opinion and Laurie’s (the continually inspired and inspiring perfumer at Sonoma Scent Studio), this is a unisex perfume.
Tabac Aurea opens with a honey-sweet, resinous blond tobacco top that pulls you through the entire the entire maturation process of a tobacco leaf, with much the same effect that Sonoma Scent Studio’s Fig Tree does with the fig note. Unfortunately, I lack the olfactory sophistication to express how she could do something in either perfume, but the knowledge that it must take to fit nearly every facet of something, be it the sweet syconium of a fig or a green tobacco leaf, into a fragrance and have it smell so good is a sign that Laurie Erickson has found her calling.
I found the sweetness pushing my limits (I have a natural aversion for anything too sweet), but Tabac Aurea is beautiful. There’s something about the tonka-slathered amber in here that turns a perfume that could have been very tired and uninspiring into something fresh and contemporary. Many other perfumers would have amped up the sweetness or the wood, ruining it for men or women wearers, respectively. The sweetness approaches that of a gourmand, but falls just short, for which I’m very thankful. Tabac Aurea strikes the perfect balance. As it dries down, smelling it smells like $100 Davidoff cigar – ambery, lush, dry, and full of hay and spices. It dies on my skin several hours into the wearing as a resinous, musky tonka bean.
Living in the Sonoma Valley of northern California, it’s quite clear that Laurie’s strength rests in her ability to work with the darkest notes – the ambers, woods, tobacco, leather, patchouli that I was weaned on as someone who first became interested in perfumery. While my interests have started to branch out, they too remained rooted, so to speak, in the dark, earthy notes with which Laurie works so carefully and beautifully. I’m always looking to have my limits pushed when I experience new things to smell, and Laurie has once again created something that deserves the attention of every lover of tobacco.
Tom Ford, move over, there’s a new girl in town. She knows her tobacco, and she’s taking you to school.

My new favorite tobacco fragrance. Sorry Tom Ford and D&G, but we are breaking up. This is a sultry, scrumptious and honest tobacco fragrance. It feels like the real thing. Sweet, resinous, sticky tobacco aged to perfection. It smells fairly sweet but not in an artificial way, which is hard to achieve. It is anchored by smokey woods, creamy sandalwood, herbal patchouli, maple-like amber. It has miraculous longevity and this lingers on my clothing for days. Laurie has truly created tobacco perfection with this one. This fragrance (samples too) is available directly from her website and for a great price. She is generous and very sweet as well.

Wow. Just wow. I thought I like Herod by parfums de marly or TF tobacco vanille… This blows my favorite tobacco scents out of the water and I proudly give this the #1 tobacco fragrance spot of all time. As a matter of fact, I am going to place this in my top ten fragrance s of all time. I came across this house after watching one of robes08 YouTube reviews and seen the niche house had some interesting offerings. I ordered a sample of this, incense pure, winter woods, Amber noire, fireside intense. They are all great and give every other niche house a run for their money in the same categories.
Tabac aurea is a 10 out of 10 in terms of scent. Perfect masterpiece.
    Longevity 9/10
    Quality 10/10
    Overall 9.5/10

🙂 Looooots of immortelle in this perfume.
It is not listed but it is in it! That is why the longlivity is very good!
It is Tabac,it is amber, it is woody..but above all it is immortelle!
When is was sniffing this perfume it reminds me on another perfume.
I had for a short while Jade from Olivier Durbano in my house.
Tabac aurea reminds me of Turqoise de Olivier Durbano.

Tabac Aurea is a fantastic tobacco scent. It seems like most of these spicy tobaccos usually tend to have big, queasy, syrupy sweetness (looking at you, Tom Ford TV) but this one avoids the cloying potpourri bomb-vibe. Instead of relying on vanilla for its sweetness, it uses amber (the same fantastic amber from winter woods and other SSS scents) and labdanum. The result is a comforting scent that retains an ample amount of mystery and depth. Their are subtle supporting notes that contribute to rounding out the scent, adding additional depth and wearability and as such it doesnt smell too much like a candle or anything of the sort. The tobacco in Aurea is not raspy, dirty, or candied. It’s toasty, familiar, and naturalistic. I can’t think of a tobacco note that I like more than the one in this. It’s just extremely well done and I love it.
The only drawback to the Sonoma Scent Studio line is choosing which one is full bottle worthy as they all are fantastic for their own reason. Performance is fantastic as usual. 8.5/10

“Wow!” That’s exactly my word when i first smelled Tabac Aurea.. Though i don’t smoke, i find tobacco to be appealing.. I have sniffed quite a few tobacco based fragrances: Tobacco Vanille, Chergui, Montabaco, Tabacco Toscano, Fumerie Turque, Volutes to name some but Tabac Aurea is the realest, most natural smelling tobacco that i’ve encountered.. It’s so rich and smooth, warm and comforting and easy to wear.. Notes, other than tobacco, include amber, woods, spices, leather, tonka, labdanum, patchouli and vanilla.. How can you go wrong with that?

  18. :

Tabac Aura is a warm, creamy, smooth blend of cigar and vanilla. As a woman, I find this a wearable and comforting fragrance as the vanilla adds a feminine touch to the cigar smell. A couple of months back I was at Bloomies and tried Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille which was a heavy, cigarette tobacco smell with syrupy vanilla.
Tabac Aura actually takes me back to post college graduation. There was a group of us who remained friends and we would hang out together on the weekends. Although most of us weren’t smokers, one day the guys had discovered cigars. When we would get together they would hang out on the balcony and smoke their cigars. The girls didn’t really like smoking them so we would sit inside, but one day they got us these mini, vanilla infused cigars that smelt absolutely divine, and exactly like Tabac Aurea. From then on, we would hang out with the the guys on the balcony smoking our cigars. Since then most everyone got married and moved on, but this fragrance brings back fond memories of those days.

One of my favorite tobacco fragrances. Smooth, rich, and very natural smelling. I don’t get much, if any, leather or smoke in this fragrance. Just naturally sweet, golden, warm, slightly cherried tobacco in a vanillic-amber base. Truly a comfort scent for me. Fairly long lasting with polite projection.

Tabac Aurea Sonoma Scent Studio for women and men
Serge Lutens
Laurie Erickson
Laurie Erickson
Cocoa Sandalwood

Opens with the sense of plunging your nose into a pouch of blond tobacco. You think – amazing that they captured that. Then comes the horrid drydown: A disharmonious aroma of unpleasant and discordant smells.

Just WOW! Amazing! On me it’s a perfect balance of tobacco, soft leather, and tonka/amber. It’s warm, sweet and comforting. A perfect scent for fall and winter. On my scent eating skin it doesn’t project well but does last a long time. Love!

Laurie Erickson does it again with one of the all time great tobacco scents. I truly believe that the use of predominantly natural materials at SSS is what really makes the difference in the way her scents achieve such a high level of fidelity to the vision she has for her productions. I’m extremely surprised more people don’t rate the sandalwood note in this scent as highly as myself. It’s actually the first thing I notice in the top notes. That cold, angular sandalwood, perhaps the Australian variety such as you might find in CdG Blue Santal. I love that note, and it marries perfectly with the pipe tobacco, to take the ‘grandpa’ out of it. Or is it more of a case of taking grandpa out in the bush for a walk? The other note that I find most prominent, especially as the scent dries down, is another that is hardly mentioned here, and that is the perfect dose of patchouli working it’s way into the blend. Sure, the amber is divine, and it’s there for sure, but to me, just like the vanilla, it’s lurking way in the background, just helping to round off that sharp sandalwood and add a touch of sweetness, and I mean just a touch of sweetness, to the mix. Then it all lays down on what I’m beginning to identify as one of the house signatures, which is a cedar wood incense/burnt cedar/birch tar note, which is instantly recognisable.
Yep, for me, this is a positively divine blend of sandalwood, tobacco and patchouli, with a supporting cast of amber, vanilla and clove. I can’t begin to explain how much I like this scent or how impressive it is. As with all offerings from SSS, Tabac Aurea has longevity up the wazoo and the perfect level of projection so that you and those lucky enough to be within about an arms length of you can all be impressed by just how awesome you smell. Others have mentioned Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford here, but to me, that syrupy sweet abomination isn’t even in the same ball park as Tabac Aurea. Even another TF production I do love, Tobacco Oud, can’t hold a candle to this. Move aside both of you! This is yet another complete gem from Sonoma Scent Studio. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure, please…do yourself a favour!

If you have been looking, looking, looking for a true tobacco scent, this is IT. The first time I wore a spritz from a Sonoma sample was on St. Patrick’s Day. We went to an Irish bar in NYC for corned beef and cabbage and some beer. Suddenly I said, “Someone has been smoking in here!” Then I realized it was ME. Yup, the tobacco smell was on my heavy cotton knit sweater, and how sweet it was! If you love to smoke, but don’t let yourself for all the obvious reasons, this is either maddening or soothing. For me it’s a luxurious substitute for expensive cigarettes, leather auto interiors, suede everything. And the pleasure comes, thanks to Sonoma Scents, at a price that’s not prohibitive!

  26. :

    5 out of 5

This is a handsome tobacco scent in which, despite being a relatively complex composition, the focus is primarily on the tobacco. It opens very strong, and you’re hit with the semi-sweet labdanum that’s one of the line’s signature moves. It’s flanked by a somewhat tame and supple leather akin to that of Cuir Ottoman, and there are some notes that feel almost fruity at the outset. However, it’s never a cacophony, and the labdanum, leather, and supplementary components all serve a relatively equal function in exalting the tobacco note, which is clearly the star of this show.
The tobacco note is quite dry—similar to the tobacco notes recently featured in Puredistance Black and Tom Ford’s Tobacco Oud, but Tabac Aurea outdoes both of those scents by offering up a fragrance that’s more characterful and distinctive. The note leans toward leafy—more like the scent of tobacco before it’s packed into the chamber of a pipe. There is a vanilla aspect at work, but it’s so illusive that you’d risk pulling a muscle to detect it. Whereas a scent like Tobacco Vanille is comically inept in its attempts as subtlety, the sweet notes here are ethereal and suggestive rather than in-your-face. Furthermore, there’s a distinct woodiness to the blend, yet it doesn’t come across like a bad attempt of incorporating the pipe itself into the scent, rather, the wood is once more operating to exalt and uplift the tobacco. These subordinate notes are handled with such thoughtful vigilance, that they become virtually undetectable, yet they emerge over time, lending the scent an fully fleshed-out dimensionality.
While tobacco scents are not my genre, there are a handful that I’ll allow into the fold. Slumberhouse’s Jeke is one of them, but that’s quite a bit more taxing than this, nor is it a straightforward tobacco scent. This is a no frills affair, but frankly, it’s one of the best from the tobacco genre that I’ve ever smelled. The level of precision and attention to detail is jaw-dropping, yet it’s not a scent that’s going to bowl anyone over through a revolutionary or experimental approach. It’s simply one of the most focused, balanced, and nuanced tobacco scents available. If Jeke’s too much, and a picture-perfect pipe tobacco is what you seek, then this is the one to look toward. Not only is it one of the line’s greatest contributions, it’s simply one of the greatest tobacco scents available.
A quick note: Tabac Aurea and Fireside Intense seem like they’d have some real parallels, and they do, but Tabac Aurea is less about smoke, but instead, it mimics the slightly sweet dryness of tobacco. Fireside Intense is more about a smoldering leaves effect with a smokier approach. Both have a subtle sweetness (Tabac Aurea is slightly vanillic, Fireside Intense takes its sweetness from a strange combination of oud and guaiac. Despite parallels, their profiles are different enough to explore both, but if you prefer dryness, then Tabac Aurea would be the wiser choice, but Fireside Intense has a little more character to it.

Another lovely scent from SSS. Not that heavy. Tabac, leather, spicy and also some sweetness ( not to much). I’m not very good in describing scents…but take my word when I say it’s a lovely perfume.

Wonderful! This is the first thing that came to mind just right after a bunch of minutes of wearing.
Tabac Aurea is definitely up there amongst the most intriguing interpretations of this wonderful aroma. Yes, it is sweet and ambery but it’s neither *too* sweet nor foody. It just takes the typical sweetness of certain tabac leaves and translate it into an incredible blend of smooth woods, resinous (dry and restrained) amber and deep musks. If you like stuff a-la 1740 or Feuilles De Tabac, you’ll probably dig Tabac Aurea as well. Don’t get me wrong, these fragrances share very very few aspects if any at all but this is just to say that sweetish stuff doesn’t necessarely mean cupcakes or food. On top of that Tabac Aurea is pervaded by a resinous dryness which carefully preserves it from becoming cloying at any stage.
Tabac Aurea has really nothing to envy to the most popular fragrances playing similar themes and it’s a tremendously solid option for anyone looking for a top-notch in this genre and an easy-to-wear elegant composition at the same time. Tobacco Vanille, move on.
    Fantastic!
Sometimes, it’s really not necessary to splurge big tickets to smell great.

I’m really addicted with this one. Got a few samples from SSS and decided to a full 34 mL bottle the next month. The 1st hr will be a bit strong(my wife can swear on that). After that it’s just like being in a nice, happy place within you. So warm, inviting & intoxicating. To my nose it’s not really tobacco dominated but gets help from vanilla, amber & tonka bean? Very nice & warm. Be careful with how much you spray though, for this is heavy & long lasting. I usually do 1 full spray on the neck area, and if you can control the trigger and do quarter sprays on both the back of the ear then you’re good to go. Hopefully Ms. Erickson will continue to make this formula for many years to come. Enjoy!

    To describe the scent,
think of Vanilla Bean, Maple, Tobacco, Leather
The closest to this might be Volutes

Love it enough to have bought it.
Similar but broader and more complex than Tauer Incense Extreme or Sonoma Incense Pure.
Like if you like balsamic, soft resiny, churchy
This is a brighter scent than Winter Woods which seems to be a bit smoother darker smoky violet edge for want of a better description.
Lasts about 4 hours with moderate silage
TA leans toward being a male fragrance.

I absolutely love this scent. On my first wearing, all I could smell was cedar and clove, no tobacco, and although it was pleasant, I wasnt in love with it. However, at the end of the day, I caught a whiff of sweet tobacco lingering on my clothes and it was heavenly. Since then I smell the tobacco note a lot more strongly, and I love it more every time I wear it. The sillage is not that big, but this frag will last on skin and clothes all day long. I will definately be purchasing a full bottle, and sampling some of the Studio’s other offerings.

My family has some land, much of which is maple woods. The trees are tapped every year, and the most delicious, rich, smoky maple syrup is produced. I can’t eat any other maple syrup.
When I smell this, all I think is Maple. Maple woods & maple syrup; with a touch of clove and a pinch of tobacco. But this is not nearly as sweet as real maple syrup, so those who don’t like sugary perfumes needn’t shy away. Tabac Aurea is very amber-heavy, which is not the kind of scent I lean towards. Still, it is a very nice perfume. Since SSS has a perfume called Winter Woods, this should be called Autumn Woods. I highly recommend Tabac Aurea for amber lovers because I find it unique.

Wow, wonderful scent. This is much better than TF Tobacco Vanille. You should really try this one.
Update: The both TA and TV are gorgeous in some different way. TA is brighter and spicier in the beginning, and i like that. The drydown of Tobacco Vanille is warmer and sweeter. I prefer that. They are both very long lasting.
I LOVE THEM BOTH! I WANT THEM BOTH!

This is my 3rd entry for this frag. Its now been about 7 months since I got (two 5ml testers) of SSS’s Tabac Aurea. This fragrance is now one of my favourites. Its so rich and unique. I can really get the pipe tobacco (its not the usual vanilla or cherry tobacco). I tried Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille today and must say that Tabac Aurea leaves TV choking in its dust. I usually spray Tabac Aurea on my scarf when I go to work…..can’t help burying my nose in it every half an hour!! I can easily see why TA is highly regarded (especially when I compare it with the other generic designer frags that I have in my collection). TA is like a reliable, comforting friend…..thanks for creating this Laurie!

Despite being an ardent fan of many Sonoma Scent Studios fragrances, when I first sampled Tabac Aurea several months ago, I really didn’t care for the fragrance at all. I found it too harsh and too “big” for me to wear.
But, I’m so glad that I decided to test it again recently, because it has become a real new love.
TA is a thick and luscious tobacco fragrance. It really does smell like pipe tobacco, but with hints of leather and amber accentuating the beauty of this note sweet tobacco.
There is an underlying syrupiness to this scent also that I have absolutely fallen in love with. It reminds me of opening a box of sticky honeyed dates.
I can happily say that this is now one of my favorite tobacco based perfumes.

Woody incense mixes with the fragrances of frankincense and myrrh oil when I put this on my skin. It’s lovely at first, but dries down to a cloying and sharp scent that grates on my nerves and gets up my nose. Perhaps it’s just too strong for me. Obviously it works well on some. There are other SSS scents that work muuuuch better on me, and I’ll stick to those.

This is to written or sent to Laurie. Laurie this Tabac Aurea is simply amazing. What I was looking for in a tabacco fragrance was one that smelled like a black and mild cig after it was smoked or a pipe smell that was smoked. The smoke smell in the air, but it really does not have that kind of smell but it stills smells incredible. I have had it on for about an hour and love, love, love it to death, but I do not know about the projection and longeivity yet. I have ordered a small decant of the tom ford tabacco version to see which one I like best.I will probably like them both, but this stuff is great and daring. When I first srayed this the first 10 seconds or so it smelled just like Gucci Pour Homme. The incense version of pour homme, but later and still about an hour lat
