I am madly in love with the opening of this! So fresh your mouth waters and your cheeks pucker! A brilliant lemony grapefruit wonder! For me like being spritzed when grating zest . . . or being tickled by carbonated bubbbles from a soda like John Pegg’s summer memory! Then, it dries down to an aromatic citrus with aquatic undertones, a mix of water notes and melon.
I wish the zesty open lasted longer before going to the mellony aquatic phase. I’m not overly fond of aquatics, but due to “low tenacity” of citrus notes in general, there had to be a transition from the spectacular open. The water notes pair well with melon, a key ingredient in perfumer John Pegg’s inspiration. A moment in a summer childhood where he is nostalgic about grapefruit pop and freshly cut melons on a picnic table. The combination stretches out the feeling of freshness, with great summertime associations just as the name promised. The drydown is so aquatic it reminds me of Mason Martin Margiella’s Sailing Day. Good sillage and longevity that lasted overnight. Extremely well done . . . and that opening – Wow!

this is the purest citrus scent i’ve ever encountered. it reminds me instantly of my time in japan, where i learned i actually enjoy the scent of grapefruit when it is sweet and not bitter. clean simple sunshiney joy in a bottle. i hope john releases it again next summer — citrus lovers deserve to experience summer of ’84.

There was a point in time where I was pretty fond of citrus scents, but over the years I came to consider them a bit too upbeat for my taste. Summer of ‘84 is taking me back, reminding me of just how nice a well-blended citrus perfume can make me feel.
I received this as a sample, and that first sniff was almost enough to make me order a full bottle on the spot. @fishwife is right on the money with her comparison to Squirt – sugary grapefruit is the predominant note here. I do get a faint hint of melon, with the musk and water notes adding that edge that all Kerosene frags have, keeping it well outside of the sickly sweet zone.
Being a sometimes sentimental person who also happens to have been born in ‘84, I forced myself to spend a couple of weeks with my sample before committing to a full bottle, to be sure I wasn’t letting nostalgia lead me to an impulse buy. But it just smelled so good, and I felt so damn happy every time I wore it. Go ahead, Kerosene, take all my money.

I received a sample of this when I bought Follow by Kerosene and ordered it the same day! I love it! The fresh cut pink grapefruit opening sprayed on in morning wakes me up! It is a great fresh scent on my skin lasting all day and isn’t cloying in our Arizona desert 90 degree weather right now. I know it has other ingredients but grapefruit dominates on my skin staying strong which I love! As it dries down I do notice a little saltiness but this is my favorite citrus perfume. When I need an energy boost this is the fragrance I wear. I highly recommend it!

This is the smell of an unpeeled grapefruit, salty aquatic notes, a little bit of musk and a tiny bit of something vaguely floral like orange blossom? I would put it in the aquatic category rather than citrus. Bitter and salty. Am curious about how this would smell on a man in the summer warmth. A little too realistic “ocean” for me.

This reminds me of Squirt, a fizzy, grapefruit flavored soda that definitely had it’s hayday back in the 1980’s, and was very popular in the Midwest…like most citrus scents it fades pretty quickly but it’s such a fun whirlwind of nostalgia before it fades…

Wow, this has one of the best openings out of pretty much anything in my collection. Amazing blast of sharp (In a good way) grapefruit with an intoxicating melon and aquatic background. After one sniff of a sample, I knew I had to buy a bottle before it was gone forever. It’s so unique and long lasting as well. It just has this alluring quality to it that makes you keep smelling it over and over. This is citrus done right. Love it.

A better fit for a conservative designer label and not what one might expect from an indie house, especially a creative type like kerosene who built his reputation on offbeat yet wearable indie scents. Bland, uninspired, monolithic and populist, this is as generic and lacking in originality as an aquatic citrus fragrance can get. The only thing special about this is the limited supply and availability exacerbating the already aggravating situation. Sorry mr. Pegg, typically I admire your creations for their often groundbreaking truly indie nature, even if I may not like the actual fragrances. This is a dud and not worthy of the kerosene name.

The latest limited edition release by Kerosene, Summer of 84, is the most warm-weather-leaning creation of John’s that I can recall trying. I haven’t made my way through his whole catalog by any means but certainly the heavier/winter/gourmand scents have been the ones that have attracted me to the line.
My experience of this fragrance is dominated by the strong citrus element, specifically grapefruit, in addition to lemon and bergamot. It’s very fresh, but sharp and tart, but thorough and natural-smelling. Mixed in with the citrus are white florals and musk, though I confess I don’t get the melon note. Still, it remains citrus-dominant into the dry down, even. The other elements merely lie in the background.
Longevity is quite good but projection fades relatively quickly after application. Overall this is a lovely fresh fragrance to wear on a summer day but slightly above the cost of what I would expect for such a product, maybe by 50%.

I like perfume! Actually, I love perfume, good perfume. The scents that I choose to use help me to remember wonderful times and occasions. My favorite time of the year is summer! That’s the season when I see family and friends and get a chance to spend time with them. Outside enjoying family reunions, picnics, fresh air, homemade lemonade, sweet grapefruit, fresh fruits and wonderful times at the beach.
If you love summer too, hurry up and get Summer of ’84 from House of Kerosene. While I enjoy the richness and originality of their many scents I have to say that I am giddy with excitement about Summer of’84. Imagine that I can remember, dream and think about Summer all year.
Summer of ’84 is filled the scents of summer…
Fresh grapefruit…everything tastes better in the summer
Lemon…think homemade lemonade without the calories
    Melon…fresh tasty goodness
    Bergamot…fresh citrus fruit
White flowers…fresh and a little bit sweet
    Fresh water…think the beach
    Musk…:-)
Summer of ’84…Summer date night in a bottle
