Description

In autumn 2007, Jil Sender introduces Stylessence fragrance, a sequel to the Style perfume presented a year before. The bottle has the same for as the Style one, but this time it’s black. Just like the previous one, Stylessence was created by Bernard Ellena. It was made to be seductive and to reveal the sensual side of a woman. The fragrance opens with notes of orange leaf, cardamom, freesia and petit grain. Orange blossom, jasmine, violet and neroli create floral heart notes, and the base brings notes of hinoki wood, amber and musk. It is available as 30 and 50 ml EDP, along with the matching body milk and powder.

I remember specifically asking for this fragrance as a birthday gift when it was first launched (in my mind that was well before 2007 but hey, looks like I’m wrong). When the day came and someone actually gave it to me, I already couldn’t remember why I asked for it in the first place. No surprise the small bottle lasted very, very long… Today, 10+ years later (again, feels more like 20), I emptied it for good. I get most of the notes listed and I admit they are well balanced, still I find this fragrance somewhat average. For me this one falls into the category “questionable posthumous fame”: the longer it’s been discontinued the higher the ratings. I’m reviewing this in Feb-2018 and the current score is 4.02 out of 5. Wouldn’t be surprised to find an even higher score in a years’ time.

Stylessence tells me stories I no longer wish to hear.
Of emotional abuse, of manipulation, of isolation, of transferred anxiety, of clutter and claustrophobia, and (most frustratingly so) of unwarranted confidence and sensuality.
It’s been years since I wore this, and as I’m working on booting the selections in my wardrobe that just aren’t “me,” Stylessence appeared on the chopping block. I braced myself for a painful stumble down memory lane as I spritzed my wrist. I had to know if this smell would still conjure every negative feeling I felt at that point in my life.
And it did. I completely shut down. My only solace was that I’d already planned to shower that night anyway.
It’s such a shame because, objectively, this is a beautiful juice. The hinoki wood elevates this creation to levels that once instilled in me an almost animalistic, carnal fervor. But because those feelings were attached to a person who chewed me up, spit me out, and left me a shell of myself, I can’t own this anymore.
You see, scent isn’t like a restaurant or a museum or a keepsake whose significance you can reassign or reassociate. It’s tenacious, and it will nag you until you face it. Even when you don’t want to.
Let this be a testament that sometimes the ones you’re most passionate about will fizzle out the quickest.

Amazing composition! I tried it because I also liked Style but found it too sweet, too fruity. This one is perfect!
This scent is a total cameleon: it starts with amber envelopped in suave white flowers and a hint of citrus, then come the muscs, cardamom and sweet woods. The next phase I thought it just turned soapy and that’s it. Well no, it goes on with flowers once again and the dry down after 4-6 hours is citrusy sweet woods on amber. Extremely sophisticated, the notes pyramid isn’t all that predictable. It suits well winter, autumn and cold spring but I expect it would develop quite fine in warmer weather too because of the combo flowers, neroli and musc.
It has a gentle flowery-fruity sweetness, not cloying or boring which makes it lean on the feminine side. I really wouldn’t call it unisex. But there are many fragrances that aren’t unisex and work well on a man’s skin chemistry – experienced on my husband successfully, but not in this case, I wouldn’t even dare to fool him with this one
I too can sense a light vibe of Alien TM, because they share 3 common notes, but Stylessence goes in its own direction actually with more… style!
Some great perfume houses could be envious.
Silage and longevity are moderate, the price does not equal the quality.

    Violet and wood, and lightness
I am describing the memory only.
    I had a bottle in 2012.
First the scent fascinated me. I wore in spring and summer days. I did not feel neroli. Some were violet / wood, so lightweight, but warm note – probably the amber in the base – and also sweet. Generally enjoyable.
But I had boyfriend then and next year we split up, and the perfume I associated with him, love ended and to this smell too. I swap the scent to another one.
I recommend to try, they are not easy to buy.

By the time a sample found its way to me a few years back this gem was already not available anymore so imagine my surprise when I walked into the well known perfumery starting with the letter “D” and saw this in a shelf! And on sale! Of course I had to snatch up a bottle, before it’s gone again and am contemplating on buying a back-up if it’s still available when the holidays are over.
Stylessence is slightly more woody than Style, which has an overall softer feel with the vanilla more pronounced. On my skin its also a tad creamy and not that fruity but more floral woody without the musk. I think Tigerlillian described my experience with this scent very well: “Stylessence radiates an oriental character that could also be woody and floral. There are also spicy and fruity undertones that give this fragrance a feeling of balanced fullness. Freesia is the main player warmed by woody spice and leafy nuances. Orange is warm and earthy, rather than juicy and bright.” Divine!

Have never smelled this before but it sounds very interesting. Is this fragrance very “feminine”? Could a confident man wear this (I kinda really like the bottle hehe)? Thanks in advance for any input.

Why oh why did they discontinue this? Love it! It’s fresh but also sensual and bit peppery at the opening. Great for day and night in my opinion

I tested Stylessence today and I think it is more of a soft floriental in the manner of Armani Code (it does not smell like Code, though).
Stylessence is really nice in the beginning and in the heart notes.
At first I get violets with the most wonderful background of orange flowers.
The violet note is sweet and powdery but is perfectly balanced by the soft tartness of all things orange in this composition.
At no point do I smell woody notes.
Stylessence is soft, round and full (it reminds me of the scent cocktail on my winter scarves); it is comfy and cosy and snuggles up to the wearer.
The scent is rather linear and has not changed much on my skin in the past 4 or 5 hours – I like the scent and could not have asked for more!
I think this one is not for the colder months only and I can picture the fragrance being worn in summer nights.
To me, Stylessence is actually what the Boss Nuit campaign photos promised:
A nice, safe evening fragrance that will please many (just like Armani Code does).
I must say that I thought of buying it for myself but in the base Stylessence changes completely.
In the late drydown it reminds me very much of Escada’s Absolutely Me which is the one and only (!) fragrance on my dislike shelf.
All in all I still recommend this one as a safe blind-buy or as a present; it is a floriental for starters that lasts around 6 hours and projects moderately; it would be a good addition (not a replacement) to the wardrobes of Code EDP lovers.

Freesia is the main player warmed by woody spice and leafy nuances. Orange is warm and earthy, rather than juicy and bright.
I absolutely love the amber drydown with smooth, mellow cushions of musk and wood. Warm, sophistication with quiet tenacity and resolve.

I can’t help but like this perfume though I don’t love it. It’s almost like the floral scent is a bit scour? Lasts well, but I’m not in love with it..on me anyway.

Stylessence seemed to me an intensified version of Jil Sander Sun – which I love a lot. It doesn’t change much from the beginning to the end, there are only very subtle flicks and they prevent Stylessence from being boring. I agree with other reviews below, it is a sophisticated fragrance. And the bottle is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l, just beautiful, I really like Jil Sander’s minimalism.
Add: It’s quite long lasting. It’s been 8 hours and I can still smell it. Very good.

One of my favourite scents for wintertime. Warm and comforting like a cashmere sweater you’re wearing close to your skin.
The combination of freesia and cardemom work very well in the opening. I do smell vanilla but don’t see it in the notes. I bought this smelling Style and Stylessence and found Stylessence much better, longer lasting and very suitable on a cold day. I usually never buy the same perfume twice and I don’t know what I will do once this bottle is finished. I think I would miss it and I will buy it again. It’s something you want to smell and wear in winter.

Stylessence is oriental spicy scent. Winter is the only time of year when this black bottle with oily black filling is suited.
Opening of Stylessence is strong and herbal. Has unexpected medicinal aura, I felt like having cough syrup on my skin. Or menthol cream for rubbing aching back. Reminded me also on sour alcohol liqueur with hidden sugar in the last drop. I have experienced bizarre and hospital impression from Stylessence in first two hours. Didn`t like it one tiny bit.
However the dry down is quite pleasing and calm, powdery and floral. Peaceful and warm. I recommend it to those who search for spicy, unusual and strong perfume. This might be the one!

I tried this and after about 15 minutes I couldn’t smell anything on me. I expected this to be alot more intense. I know the body sometimes gets used to a familiar smell and so switches off to it but no one else could smell it either. I find the original Style much stronger. Well disappointed 🙁

So i tested this one because i thought maybe its similar to Style, but thats not right at least on the beginning. Stylessence smells like bitter medicine, its very awful, i dont smell any flower, it gaves me headache after the first smell, i was really happy when i could wash it off and after 3 times washing my wrist and some hours its similar to Style, but nothing for me though, i prefer the normal Style-version. The nice thing is the bottle, modern in black.

Stylessence is very strong but lovely perfume…
It reminds me Alien TM! It is like mixture of Style and Alien…
I checked and both Alien and Stylessence has the same notes: jasmin, woodsy notes and amber.
    It is more woody oriental…
I wouldn’t say it is everyday scent, maybe for winter..I’d rather see it as evening/going out scent…everyday – only for strong-minded women.

not bad, I’m wearing this pretty nicely right now while I’m writing this review. It can be an ‘office’ scent, a smothered ‘Notorious’ by Ralph Lauren would smell like this, I imagine. But I don’t think I’m going to by this

It’s a typical powdery scent – it doesn’t remind me of the original “Style” too much but it’s a nice little everyday-fragrance. The problem is that it’s rounded up and not very distinctive – like a mix of some different fragrances. (a bit like Burberry)

this is a very sophisticated perfume, more fuity than floral. it is very new, modern, long lasting and soft. I will recommend it to young, determined women.Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference!
