Well, it’s pretty good for what it is – an 80s drugstore fragrance. It’s fairly strong as befits the era, and long-lasting. It’s a soft chypre, by which I mean there is no obvious green or mossy note. More a chypre in the style of Rochas Femme for example.
I quite like it, but the Lentherics I’ve tried recently all seem to have something in common that I don’t care for – quite a urinous note in the drydown. Civet maybe?
To be fair to Style, it’s better in this regard than some of the others. But I’m less inclined than I was to explore the house of Lentheric. Although I loathe the whole concept of “old-lady” perfume, there is an unpleasantly geriatric accord that Lentheric seems to favour. Or seemed to, I suppose – these are all very dated fragrances.

I loved this I would buy it again. One of the YSL vaguely reminded me of it -champagne I think? I will have to go and see.

Fell in love with this in the early 90’s as a teen and wore the heck out of it. I recently became acquainted with it again and god, how I’ve missed it. It still has its familiar and recognizable scent, but smelling it now, its rather crude and loaded with civet. Very much in cat pee territory but I could simply roll in it. It strangely hovers between smelling like a robust chypre perfume and cheap all at the same time. I’m pretty sure it was modelled after an existing perfume from the 80’s, but I cant quite put my finger on it. Around the late 80’s/early 90’s a lot of cheaper price point perfumes were crude dupes of the heavy hitters of the 80’s.
Anyway, I’ve been hunting around for something similar to Style given how impossible it is to get it down in the Southern Hemisphere, and while La Prairie’s Life Threads Emerald does come close, it’s not a true replacement. Style is a tad fruitier and theres something appealing about its rough edges and crooked angles. Cabotine by Gres is also in the vicinity, yet is more honeyed and overtly fruitier.
But imagine my surprise when I was in the supermarket the other day and decided to smell Impulse Illusions for nostalgia’s sake- a very close rendition of Style, animalic civet and all! Probably the closest thing to it today so if you love Style and cant get it anywhere, try Impulse Illusions. It’s also worth trying La Prairie’s Emerald if you want something more refined in the same ballpark.
