Zoos have a beloved Giant Panda, along with a raccoon-like critter called a “Lesser Panda”. I feel sorry for these guys.. they’re just as endangered, but no animal should have the word “lesser” in its name. In the same way, most perfumers treat Peony like the “Lesser Rose”. A watered-down, formulaic, aquatic rose takes on the Peony label. That is NOT the case here.
There’s something special about Dame’s Soliflore Peony, with its mouth-watering litchi opening. To be honest, this was the *last* of the Dame Soliflores for me to sample, simply because I’d expected just an aquatic rose. It’s now going straight onto the FB Wish list.
Peonies remind me of mille-feuilles. That delicate, thousand-layer corolla with the sprig-of-mint green calyx for garnish. And just like the French dessert, Dame’s Peony is delicious. You rarely come across pandas and mille-feuilles on Fragrantica. So there you have it!
