This is yummy – spices brought on the tradewinds and gentlemen of the Islands. 🙂 The clove is probably too strong and I suppose it’s a cliché but I like it. I’m thinking this would be nice on a cool compress on your nape or forehead, or pour a little into a footbath for a lovely soak. In other words, not merely for scenting your person, but using in an old style as well. I love the thick glass bottles and heavy lead caps. A friend sent this and the mandarin one in a big box of bottles intended for my husband, but I’m the one who wears them. ♡

I have worn Royall Spyce for over two decades. My first bottle was purchased in the Virgin Islands. I do believe that the current domestic formula is a bit weaker than the Bermuda product, but it is still a wonderful warm, refreshing scent. My grandchildren recognize me by that scent. My wife buys me a new bottle at Christmas and on Father’s day. Contrary to some reviews, I find it to be an effective all purpose lotion. I use it every morning. And, contrary to other reviews, I love the low notes that are sustained after a long day of work in the sun. I think that is when the fragrance does its best work. I actually find the early high notes to be a bit sharp, but the mid and low notes work extremely well for me after I sweat in the garden.

Because of the cloves in it, this reminds me of Winter around the holidays. It smells very natural.

As strange as this initial comment may be Royall Spyce’s advertising as an all purpose lotion (functioning as a cologne/aftershave/lotion) I never understood. It was a warm and spicy cologne that lasted well. Not soothing to one’s skin as an aftershave from my experience.I’m not a ‘lotion’ man but the heavy clove scent and spicy character of Royall would be no different than if you bathed in a cologne.Couldn’t wear this stuff while harvesting crops or mowing. The sun beaming down on you and the heat combined Royalle Spyce was cloying. But in the fall and winter it’s just wonderful. With that being said that was the made in Bermuda bottle, the currently made USA offering it’s almost backwards.Still smells great but it’s watered down a little so it doesn’t last as long as a cologne…maybe 2 hours.Lighter color in the bottle than the Bermuda made from my perspective. As an aftershave yes it is somewhat soothing.Still potent enough it should not be a body lotion. My advice would be to try a tester or sample a friends Royall Spyce(USA) to see if you like it or not especially as-is putting past tense reputation of the Bermuda days aside.

This is my third acquisition of Royall Lyme of Bermuda fragrances. My very first was Royall Lyme, followed by Royal Muske. The Spyce is the third that was also originated in the early days of this brand. Aside from Bayrhum, all of the others came later (I’m not sure if ownership had already transitioned to the Clarecastle Group).
Royall Spyce has two incarnations, pre and post-Clarecastle. I’ve obtained the earlier one.
Well, I have to say that at first I found this cologne a bit odd. A weird concoction of notes at first sampling. I was certainly expecting a spice bouquet, but not quite like this. There’s a definite forward presence of clove and bay leaves, with pepper and lime behind. It’s not sweet or sour, but perhaps a little bitter. It’s definitely a Caribbean spice mix and not Oriental.
It is strong at first, rather pungent. But it dries down in fairly short order, remaining closer to the skin. In comparison to my other Royall Lyme fragrances, it is a few notches behind Muske for sillage and longevity. It’s warm and spicy, so I can see this as an autumn/winter fragrance… which perplexes me as many have selected “summer” as a season to wear it.
I do like it and I’m not disappointed that I bought it. But will I use it much? YES! Not only do I like it now, I love it. This smells delightful, once you’re familiar with it. At first impression you’d think it would only be useful in the cooler months, but honestly I think it can be worn year ’round.
I have to admit I’m curious about the reformulation, as to how different it is. I’ll have to make a point of sampling it, if I can find a place that has it (I’d heard some Whole Foods markets sell this brand).

    Royall Spyce Royall Fragrances ..
I was introduced to Royall Spyce by a co-worker. I thought, “what smelled so good in here” so I sniffed around until I found the source.
Clove dominates other spices. The fragrance is scrumptious, well-balanced, warm, et polite. What more can you ask for in a gentleman (except for intelligence, honesty, liability, sensibility, good sense of humor, and etc …. hehehehe). It was conconcted over 5 decades ago and yet nothing about it is old fashioned. Earned B+ for projection and power.
A perfect winter scent for all genders. Calorie-free dessert in a bottle.

Visione has this one pegged quite well, and I’ll add that Royall Spyce is very clovey and fresh. Some spicy unisex scents opt for total warmth, but Spyce’s nutmeg is dialed back, and the clove/pepper combination is amped way up, which gives it a rather cool feeling. Its mentholated spice accord pairs beautifully with crisp citrus top notes, and heads to a clean drydown that deserves considerable praise. Very well done.

Through the years I’ve used numerous other ‘spice’ fragrances and without a doubt Royall Fragrance Spyce is my favorite. Some might say that St. John’s Spice fragrance is the same or very similar to Royall Fragrances Spyce, but it simply is not on many points, as Royall Fragrance is a much truer spice fragrance and much easier to wear for both myself and those who come within the sillage range of this scent.
First of all, it the only spice fragrance I’ve found that does not have chemical undertones. This is especially important for others who have chemical sensitivities when they come within the sillage range of a fragrance. Problem with many chemicals used in many fragrances is their chemical sensitivity effects typically reach way beyond the sillage range of the fragrance, often affect chemically sensitive individuals on the other side of a room even. Such is not the case with Royall Fragrances Spyce.
Secondly, Royall Fragrances Spyce is not an especially overwhelming fragrance provided it’s used sparingly (also a factor for Royall Fragrances Vitiver and Musk offerings). It’s does have a slightly sharp top note that quickly passes, but the real beauty of this fragrance is the middle notes that get even better and more smooth with the base notes. The fragrance quality actually increases as the day wears on. In fact, when I want a ‘spice-based’ fragrance I reach for Royall Fragrances Spyce 9 to 1 over my other spice-based fragrances.

I think the above review must be for Royall’s Lime scent, also excellent. But I have Royall Spyce, like the one shown in the picture above, except mine has a spray nozzle. It is a refreshing, reviving yet light spice cologne, very close to what I’ve been looking for- an affordable carnation cologne. It is along the lines of Floris Malmaison but less musky-floral. The cloves are out in front on this one; the nutmeg and pepper are supporting players. I think it suites men and women equally well; it has tonic properties and never fails to life my spirits.

I first encountered this classic on a trip to Bermuda when I was in college. I bought it to remind me of the island, with its glorious pink sand beaches, the snappy navy and white-clad policemen, the scent of refreshing drinks on the terrace of a hotel overlooking the ocean. And those drinks were always filled with gorgeous wedges of juicy lime.
Over the years, it has remained a steady favorite, and I have never been without a bottle so that I can splash it on liberally after a shower. It is definitely a scent that can be worn to the office, to relax in on a weekend, or to celebrate a vacation.
The note – quite simply, a true lime, edged about with a boozy opening note that ultimately dries down into a very alluring and clean lime-musk sillage. Whenever I wear it to work, I get compliments, and people always want to know what I’m wearing. It is never overpowering, always refreshing and completely suitable for men and women.
    It’s a true classic!
