I’d been looking for a fragrance that reminded me of the beach without being stereotypically “beachy,” so I didn’t want something that smelled like sun lotion or an umbrella drink. Also, I didn’t want dominant aquatic or salty notes as these usually don’t work well on me. One day a couple of months ago, I was browsing the fragrances at a clothing boutique and found a unisex scent called ROPES AND SAILS – and there was my beach perfume.
This starts with initial notes of grapefruit and other citrus. With dry-down, the grapefruit remains while the juniper berries, sage and woody notes emerge. It brings to mind a sunny, but not overly hot day on a secluded beach encircled by an evergreen forest. There’s a mild breeze blowing with just a tiny hint of salt in the air.
I keep thinking ROPES AND SAILS will be great in hot weather, but I’ve been enjoying it even now on chilly spring days. It’s not at all sweet and there’s no vanilla or musk. This makes it very fresh, although the woody notes give it depth. Sillage is moderate and longevity is good. I’m not concerned about product names, but the sailboat imagery here does fit the fragrance.
