A palette of citruses that catches the bitter, sour and sweet aroma from all parts. It’s bright and lively but there are shades of dark hidden underneath. The base provides some depth and ads character, but the star is always the citrus. Another companion is the mint, that puts the citruses even more into the spotlight with added crispness. Only in the late dry down, after about 5 hours, when I can only smell it from up close, I get a clear amber note.
For me, this is a better alternative to Neroli Portofino as a summer scent, because it’s more sparkly and complex.
    8/10

I’m sure most, or all of us, at one point has either “hit a wall” or become generally bored with fragrances.
For me, this is the type of fragrance that reminds me why i love this. I don’t know how else to say it.
For me, it starts out kinda like a “dark” citrus with a “dark” aquatic vibe. The sweetness of it reminds me of orange fizzy candies but more of a tangerine vibe. Then, a couple hours later it’s an almost totally different fragrance! Absolutely incredible.
It almost literally smells different from one wearing to the next. Overall performance is very good. I used to think this belonged in the blue bottle, but nope. Tom got it right. Marketing didn’t mix it up.
Not one of my favorite fragrances by any means, but hugely impactful for me and really does remind me why i loved colognes and perfumes to begin with. To find gems like this. 10/10 as an overall product but I’d rate it an 8 for me personally. That may sound odd but giving it its due props.

I loved it in the blotter. I loved it on my arm. I loved it at bedtime. In the morning I smelt heavy ISO super in the premises and now I detect it sharp and clear in this fragrance. My eyes shouldn’t have opened to this aspect of that beloved fragrance. I miss loving it. I dislike ISO super and it all there is about it now, sadly …

Summer in a bottle and maybe the best citruses ever: fresh, clean, funny – just perfect for hot days. Too pity it`s very light and after two hours is gone.

Tom ford you show off, you did it again
Perhaps the best combination of aquatics and amber ever made. I find this more aquatic , than ambery, but it still smells balanced
This is interesting and yet mass appealing, like tom ford manages to do usually
A summer appropriate amber, if there ever was one for sure
5 hours longevity and poor projection, but that is not bad when at work or close to other people

Armani Mania but Fuller on my skin. Love.

    At first a really really nice citrus effect, not harsh nor bitter;
you could smell the soft and warm base, spicy and balsamic from the opening, really pleasant……
However it doesn’t last, and it’s a big pity, maybe it has been discontinued for this reason?

  8. :

    5 out of 5

As many here have mentioned, the scent is really pleasant.
However, after 10 minutes it sits close to the skin, and in 2 hours it is completely gone. One must really REALLY love the scent to justify the price.

For me, Rive d’Ambre is the best perfume from Tom Ford – quality citrus, in a modern “light” mix, over which a touch of amber and cognac comes to give a note of originality, but also a longevity and versatility plus.
Rive d’Ambre can be wear it all year round, even in winter in a closed space, such a office. However, I think spring and autumn reveal its best qualities.
Because the brand marketing policy is to offer in the “niche” collection “beast mode” perfumes in terms of projection and longevity, ignoring, in my opinion, the complexity and elegance, it is obvious that Rive d’Ambre does not fit this “aesthetics”, being discontinued recently.
I think it would have been a good idea if Tom Ford would re-launch this fragrance in its “mainstream” collection at a reasonable price, as there is no similar in this range.
    Fragrance 10/10
    Projection Medium
    Longevity 8 h

This is uncool of me and I am usually not a fan of mixing or layering fragrances at all but this tomforf Atelier Rive d’Ambre (in layman’s terms) is better to me if I use about 1/3 ADG Profumo or just original Armani ADG and the rest TF Rive dambre.
USUALLY DONT LIK MIXING fragrances, unless its just a single material like ‘Molecule __’ or product from one of those prfm compound / raw materials-selling websites.

I got bad news for you people..
Both Rive d’Ambre and Shanghai Lilly will be discontinued.
My sale adviser informed me about that today.
Therefore, only Plum Japonais will remain as an atelier d’Orient fragrance..
I’ve never been a big fan of Rive d’Ambre. I mean the lemon opening is wonderful but then the orange smell is not that great.
Though, if a fragrance had to be discontinued, it should have been Fleur de Portofino, Sole di Positano or Costa Azzura which bring nothing to the private blend while Rive d’Ambre at least was original.
Mr Tom Ford, It’s time to react and to satisfy your old followers after so many disappointments..

For those who think this does not smell like amber, you’re right, on first blush this is just citrus. Primarily orange. The orange is as previously described: the spray of carbonated minute maid orange soda. Tender tangerine juice, slightly creamy.
However I have been obsessed with the subtler uniqueness in this and now I think it is in fact the amber which is blended well with the citrus accords. A whispering amber of an almost musk-lite quality that is maybe in part due to other non-citrus accords or citrus astringent. If you apply enough of this very light fragrance and are fortunate enough to make it past the 4 hour mark and still be noticeable, the skin scent is a citrus amber blend that is pure heaven.

On the dry down this smells like Versace Man Eau Fraiche. Mind you, it does smell less synthetic, but quite similar none the less. Smells good, longevity is average. Another Tom ford that isn’t worth the price tag.

This is just the 2nd TF fragrance I enjoy from the private line, the other being Neroli Portofino.
This is a unisex, fresh & sweet fragrance which is perfect all year round and great for an office environment in that you’ll be able to continue smelling it without concern of offending others

The smell you get when you’ve just poured orange soda out of a soda machine and into your cup, and the soda is incredibly fizzy. Very refreshing, but sometimes I don’t like it because it smells like you just poured orange soda all over yourself, similar to how Atelier Orange Sanguine smells like you just poured orange juice or Sunny D all over yourself. Still deciding if it’s a keeper or not
April 2017 Update: It’s definitely a keeper! So refreshing and invigorating. I’ll have to get a bottle at some point along with Tuscan Leather, Patchouli Absolu, Vert d’encens, and costa azzurra body spray

  17. :

    3 out of 5

I like this fizzy, citrusy, effervescent scent. The ‘put-down’ so often thrown here – that it should have been packaged in a ‘blue bottle’ is actually high praise to me.
And it’s very light. Safe for the office.
    Citrus + herbs.

  18. :

    3 out of 5

This is a fresh, citrusy and herbally fragrance that dries down to a warm, orange-y zest and warm musky scent. There is a teensy bit of spice, which I think is the reference of the amber, which grounds the fragrance. Absolutely beautiful in composition and perfect for heat, which makes the scent bloom!
Alas- this has the half life of a fruit fly. You enjoy all of the above in about an hour, just long enough for your work commute or a coffee date. This fragrance would be better served in a larger bottle, and sold for about half the current asking price.

This delightful fragrance smells clean and fresh on initial contact but quickly dissipates. I ‘accidentally’ drenched myself in a quarter of the the sample bottle this morning. I thought I was going to smell wonderful throughout the day but after a couple of hours it was barely noticeable. And a few more hours after that, I couldn’t smell it all. So for that reason I will not be purchasing a bottle. How can a bottle of perfume be so expensive when it has such poor projection and longevity?

  20. :

This scent is delicious. I can never pull the trigger on a FB. But for some reason I keep coming back to it. Its cute. Sometimes it reminds me of light blue. But with better quality ingredients.

  21. :

Beautiful. Smells like blood orange. Blood orange isn’t listed as a note so it must be the bitter orange and cognac. Mint makes an appearance.

This is so imperial and citrusy, I love it! The amber is indeed hidden, but in perfect balance with all the other notes.

I expected Amber, but it´s hidden. Atelier d’Orient Rive d’Ambre opens with a huge load of cognac on lemon. It smells quite dated.

  25. :

    5 out of 5

It opens on my skin with a burst of freshly squeezed lemon and bergamot, followed by squirts of slightly bitter oil from the skin of a zested orange that is tart, sweet and bright, all at once. Overall a Bright citruses masterpiece. Great longevity and very sophisticated fragrance that in no way is offensive in any setting!

    Rewriting my review:
Initially, I dismissed this as one of my grandmother’s floral perfumes. It was just too blossom-y and powdery for me, and upon smelling it I instantly pictured this as something she would wear.
After some time, I’ve given it a few wears and I’ve changed my stance. Slightly. Although i still get the “old-lady perfume” vibe, I also get clean orange zest and blossom. There’s a smell that reminds me of standing by my grandparent’s wildly overgrowing tangelo tree, a similar “stinkiness” that comes just ever so slightly in the background. Not sure it that “stink” came from the blossoms or the sap of the tree, but I recall that scent so vividly just typing about it now.
I don’t get amber at all, nor do I get cognac. I find this to be a crisp clean citrus fragrance that showcases what it smells like to be amongst orange and lemon trees. I feel like this fragrance got mixed up in marketing, maybe due to the name, but it absolutely should be in a blue bottle and not a dark amber one.
8/10 for me; a great clean scent that’s unisex leaning on, well I’d say masculine upon re-review, but barely so IMO. Fragrance is choking if you over-apply it, 2 sprays on the neck should do it and lasts almost all day.

  27. :

    5 out of 5

A very realistic citrus. Minus the old-fashioned, powderyness of Neroli Portofino. I’d consider this is a more modern take. But at what cost? I wouldn’t wear this only because it doesn’t have much character. Its too easy to forget. It just smells like…Citrus. Thats not to say it doesn’t smell amazing. It does!
If you want to just smell like a medley of grapefruit, lemon, and orange juice, this is for you.

  28. :

    4 out of 5

Rive D’Ambre might best be summed up as “spicy citrus” but its depth is undermined by the misleading name, which emphasizes the amber rather than the citrus. I haven’t much to add to the general consensus, which is that Rive D’Ambre is at the intersection of fresh and spicy, with orange and amber and standouts as the top and base, respectively, with cardamom somewhere in the middle as the spiciness. There’s something sweet at the base, as well, but I can’t really tell what it is.
In the Tom Ford Private Blend line, I liken this mostly to Azure Lime as far as the “citrus with depth” categorization goes. Projection and longevity are disappointing for a TF Private Blend, though, so I can’t say that I’d consider buying this. Certainly a very pleasant fragrance, preferably used in the warmer weather day/night, but just not one worth the price.

I can see how some folks were let down by this, considering the completely misleading name, “Rive d’ Ambre.” It’s not really an amber fragrance at all. But I still like it. Rive d’Ambre smells like a freshly opened can of Sprite or 7Up, a sort of effervescent, fizzy, semi-sweet lemon and lime concoction. It seems composed with a soft touch, and while it’s fresh and bubbly, its citrus notes never appear particularly sharp, due to a moderate addition of mint and a gentle orange blossom that rounds the edges. The reason why I think this deserves a second look is that while it’s part of a genre (fresh citrus) that’s flooded with competitors, it doesn’t quite smell like the typical offering. It’s not a ‘sporty’ or ‘athletic’ style of fragrance . It’s too smooth for that. The rounded citrus notes and kind of carbonated fizz that accompanies them help Rive to stand out on its own. I feel like I could easily pick this out of a line-up in a blind test. The biggest draw back to this one is its projection and longevity, which could both do with an improvement. After the initial hour, it stays close to the skin, and doesn’t seem to last more than 5 hours. For some, this may be the deal-breaker, and understandably so since you’d be paying top dollar for it. Regardless, I’ll give Rive d’Ambre a few more shots once the weather heats up, as the climate may drastically affect its performance. It’s really a spring/summer scent anyway, and since I love the way it smells, I’m hoping it blossoms in the heat and projects better as a result. If it does, I’ll certainly consider it.
Temporary Verdict: Thumbs up despite the mediocre performance and worth sampling if you’re looking for a smooth citrus fragrance.

Don’t be fooled by the name. Nothing opulent and rich about this scent. It should be packaged in the blue bottle.

Surely this should be in one of the blue bottles. My first thoughts are thai salad. Bright citrus and herbal.

Very lovely fragrance! Opens with a burst of citrus, mint and spices (tarragon and cardamom) which lasts a good 10 minutes on me and then calms down into a very nice soft spicy amber skin scent. I really enjoy this fragrance in warm sunny wheather as it is very bright. In my opinion, the name does not reflect what this fragrance really is. It is not at all one of those dark amber fragrance as the name could mislead someone. Expensive for what it is but I truly enjoy this one!
    Sillage: Soft
    Longevity: 5-6 hours

This is a new love for me! It starts off with a huge blast of citrus and bergamot and then it begins to fade into a sweet orangey smell. It’s really hard to describe. The citrus stays really sweet. I can barely smell any amber. I’m really glad I tried this on my skin because on paper all I smelled was bitter citrus, but on my skin the citrus warms up to a sweeter citrus.
When I first sprayed this on my skin it reminded me of SOMETHING but I couldn’t figure out what. After maybe the second day of wearing it I got it. PRADA CANDY L’EAU! L’EAU has this caramel and sweet citrus smell to it. The only thing that’s missing that keeps this from being a dead ringer is the caramel.
That being said, they both have TERRIBLE lasting power! I look at this one with more of the side eye since this is a whole $130 bucks more! I can’t believe how badly the lasting power on this one is! 3 hours and BAM, it’s gone!

This juice opens with some nice spicy citruses; sounds funny I know, but it works. 5 minutes later the amber comes out from under the covers… for about 5 minutes. Then nothing – absolutely nothing, there is no amber to be found. Then, for the next 4 hours, you’re left with a nice semi-sweet soap.
After about 5 hours, that amber wakes up from another nap and you have that slightly sweet honey-chocolate vibe going on. Nice dry down, but I’m not sure it’s worth the wait – or the price.
Great quality fragrance, smells nice, and developes quite a bit. I’m just not sure I would commit to it.

  36. :

No amber at all on me which is a letdown. I get citrus spices and a dash of mint. It’s very subtle in the longevity and silage categories. I don’t know why the perfumer was chosen who was mostly done cheaper designer stuff for Ed Hardy, RL and Arden. I don’t think this was a wise choice or a wise name for this scent.

Really didn’t expected anything from this one. Got a mini bottle, 4 ml sampler, when I purchase another Tom Ford. First sniff out of the bottle left me indifferent. But… I decided to give it a try and discovered a beautiful yet simple and extremely well blended fragrance.
Probably the opposite of what one would expect from an «Amber» fragrance. The citrus opening is soft, beautiful, never bitter or sweet (more orange than lemon or bergamot) and seems to last longer for me than some of the previous reviews. The dry down stays quite bright and keeps part of the citrus opening. Never heavy or dark. One of the rare fragrance that seems to become part of you instead of covering you. Something to wear for yourself. It’s not flashy more like a soothing balm that smells terrific even though it seem simple. I can understand why some of you might find this boring. For my part I love the fact that this classy smell makes me feel good in jeans & t-shirt!
To me this is a rainy day fragrance. It’s clear and has that little something that I can’t identify that we find in some herbs and soaps in Chinatown. It does feel like an Atelier d’Orient. From indifference to amazement… sometimes to go in opposite directions makes you discover beautiful things!
It won the 2014 Fragrance Foundation award in the category Men’s Luxury Fragrance alongside Rose D’Arabie from Armani in Women’s Luxury Fragrance.

Opens with a great citrus scent. It lasts briefly, though, before it turns to AMBER! on my skin. After a couple of hours, it’s a more subtle amber scent. That’s fine if you like amber, but I feel that the promised citrus scents go missing before you get to enjoy them.
Not a bad scent, but not what I would look for if I wanted to stay fresh smelling on a hot day.

  39. :

What a snoozefest in a bottle. “Boring fragrance” is too kind. It’s a citrusy, Iso-e-super skin scent that probably costs +$200. There are countless other perfumes that are the same idea and done far better, CHANEL’s Eau de Cologne being one of them, one of the best too. Try all of Tom Ford’s other perfumes. Skip this.

  40. :

What I love about this fragrances is that its not trying to be astounding and render all who smell it speechless. It’s a lovely fragrance, perfect for Spring/summer, uses quality ingredients, has a discreet trail and gets compliments. Its a fav!

Rive d’Ambre from Tom Ford’s his Atelier d’Orient line is a light elegant take on a classic eau de cologne with a twist tied up with a silken rope of mystery. The nose behind its creation is perfumer, Olivier Gillotin. He is known for creating 10 Corso Como, Cristobal for Balenciaga and Notorious for Ralph Lauren. Among his many perfumes is one of my favorites, Fath Pour L’Homme for Jacques Fath. (See my review Falling In Love With Fath on my blog Scents Memory)
Classified as an Oriental for men and women Rive d’Ambre opens with a sparkling pop of citrus notes like the clash of cymbals and wind chimes in an exotic modern symphony. These notes are linear and come at you in a heady bright jumble of lemon, bergamot and bitter orange. This plays around on the skin for about 20 minutes and slowly the course of the opening they calm and are absorbed into a cocktail of cognac and amber. Spices of cardamom and tarragon add dimension to the fragrance as it falls to the skin at about 5 hours. In the dry down there is the warmth of tolu balsam and patchouli to cover and comfort the bones of what remains of the fragrance.
This is not a complex or challenging fragrance but that does not make it uninteresting. On the contrary it is surprising in where it goes from that familiar eau de cologne opening into an exotic warm range. It is a perfect fragrance to wear in the tropics where the heat will open it up and add to its projection. In more temperate climates it would work best in summer. Rive d’Ambre is a light bright smart and sophisticated addition to the Atelier d’Orient collection by Mr. Ford.

The following review is really for my notes only, its very brief and leaves out a ton of details. Im just typing something that I remember each by. Im sure I will disrespect someones favorite fragrance too.
I get tons of orange to open then the orange mixed with what to me was a white floral.

  43. :

    5 out of 5

Well, without looking at the notes, i expected Rive d’Ambre to be, due to the amber on its name, thick, sweet, more oriental overall. But maybe Tom Ford was wanting to allude to the ambient where you collect the ambergris? I don’t know, but this is fresh, citrusy, sparkling, not thick or very oriental at all. It opens with for me with what seems to be lemons, oranges, tangerines, their leaves mixed with neroli flowers and something sweet citrusy juice. It calms quickly after the mouthwatering opening, which can be a little bit disappointing, because you want the first pleasant impression to last much more. I like it, but i question myself how does this fit in a private collection of fragrances, since it has such a pleasant and easy to like aura that it would seems more right to put into mainstream instead.

LIKE A SPICIER VERSION OF PORTOfINO
I find Rive D’ambre absolutely refreshing as well as warm and pleasing. It opens with a zesty citrus blast of orange and orange grind soaked in cognac and spiced with Cardamon and tarragon and mint. Very refreshing and like a men’s cologne but taken the cologny aspect out of it for both sexes to enjoy. I prefer this in the summer and spring but it is a all around warm ambery yellow fragrance. It’s like a sunset over a field of orange trees . I find this fizzy , orangey , slightly boozy , spicy and ambery, my only problem with this one is, it only lasts about two hours. But. I do enjoy reapplying a scent, I really don’t mind , since we all love fragrances we all enjoy spraying it. I replay most of my scents 3 times during the day, just so I can enjoy the fresher top notes again and again.

wow, I’m usually a TF groupie, but I’ve been so disappointed with his latest offerings! This is a nice and interesting frag, but it doesn’t last! Price point+ lack of staying power= nope, nope, nope!

  46. :

    4 out of 5

i’m blown away by the opening; citrus blended with something, then it mellows out. for me, it smelt like kenzo ‘power’. not exactly the same, but there is the same list of ingredients mixing together to produce this scent. it’s nice, but not unique enough for the price in my opinion…

  47. :

Rive opens with a natural, almost bitter citrusy orange as noted above.Whilst this is undoubtably fresh it bottoms out into a soft skin scent on me within 30 minutes or so.I will enjoy my sample while it lasts but unfortunately a full bottle of this will not be joining my quartet of TF Private Blends. It is not worth AUD 290 for a supposed EDP when there are other spring/summer Tom Fords on offer with far greater staying power.Sorry Tom I love your work but not on this occassion 🙁

  48. :

    3 out of 5

Delightful bright citrus on application and for 20 mins thereafter. Unfortunately, the follow-through is poor and is thus disappointing, with the citrus fading into middle territory far too quickly, then a nearly zero-sillage bottom after 40 mins. While having a much more tighly-wound and overwhelming lime top note, TF’s Azure Lime is far more linear on my skin and is preferable to me.
However, since I liked the top on RA so much, I will be simply reapplying every hour to test how long it takes for a co-worker to complain that I’m wearing too much perfume. That will help define my application “upper limit”, as it were. So I suspect my bottle of RA will disappear rather quickly, which is not optimal for a perfume at this price point. Fortunately, I got my bottle for free from a rep at a major retail outlet where I spend a lot of money on fragrances. I was thus predisposed to write a more positive review on RA, but even at that “price”, I can’t do it.

Love the ginger in this one, but I have to agree with the first commenter, this is a scent that is a slight twist of already exisiting perfumes. Cinnamon is one of my favorite ingredient, so I’m saying this as a fact, not that I want to discourage anybody from trying it. On the contrary, it’s totally worth a sniff!

  50. :

    4 out of 5

This is a beautiful scent, sharp, clean and out with the rest of the private blend collection! It smells great on paper, I get loads of orange, lime and citrus in the opening, the first hour is strong and interesting but it falls off a cliff for me, poor projection and longevity which is a major problem for a EDP at this price. If it had any kind of longevity on me I would be itching to buy this but it doesn’t and sadly means I will not be picking this up. I was liberal on application and it disappeared fairly quickly.
I’d be keen to pick up something similar and cheaper if possible.

It opens with a slight minty citrus freshness with a touch of amber and floral musk. It’s very light and non descript and does not last. A poor effort.

  52. :

Opens with a fresh burst of lemon and turns to a soft skin scent. Nice but a bit superfluous. Uplifting but very short-lived on my skin. If you are looking for a deep oriental ambre, keep looking;) more interesting on paper than on skin.

Fresh, green, clean, Christmas tree evergreens with a citrus top. I don’t get any amber in this, and very little citrus. Rive d’Ambre is my favorite of the Atelier d’Orient series. Not as long lasting as other fragrances by Tom Ford. Still full bottle worthy for me.

  54. :

    5 out of 5

A straight forward, clean citrus scent. It opens bright with natural smelling and invigorating orange that’s spiced with a touch of ginger. There’s a slight white floral /blossom note that begins to peek through, but oddly, there’s very little in the way of amber. Whereas the similar Neroli Portofino was literally carried by the amber base, here everything’s been thinned out to showcase the citrus alone. The amber’s there, but it’s only playing a structural role. And when the bright head notes vanish (10 minutes or so in), what remains is a generic floral musk with absolutely nothing new to offer.
This isn’t a bad fragrance, but it has absolutely no reason to exist.

  55. :

    5 out of 5

This starts off with a blast of bergamot. 5 minutes into this fragrance you will notice that this isn’t really a unisex perfume. It later develops into a citrusy-floral type composition. Interestingly enough, the amber is absent throughout. Yes, absent. Longevity is about 4hrs which surprised me because I usually get good play from Tom Ford fragrances. I have received some very good compliments(3 different women). I think women would enjoy wearing this; men…..not too much.

112)This is a nice citrus water mainly orange spiced with cinnamon, on a bed of incense, ginger and musk but who was already done, unfortunately for T.F. quiet better, by Diptyque L’Eau de Tarocco.
There is absolutely not a hint of amber so I guess that the reference just comes from color or a place in Asia.
It is very pretty but go directly try L’Eau de tarocco for more nuances and pleasure… especially since it is a quarter of the price of a Tom Ford.
I think Tom Ford has sens of humor. When he called his new 4 creations Atelier d’Orient (east Workshop) it means the countless workshops in Asia that produce clothing with the logo of the brand of your choice above.
The four creations are all slightly modified copies of “small” classics from French niche perfumery (Lutens, Diptyque, Maître Parfumeur et Gantier, …).
