    Oh oh
Red door is a statement perfume for me. It is a very bold statement about a strong and resilient woman who will never give up and is not afraid of being alone. It is an extremely strong fragrance that is similar to many cheap Asian perfumes but if you can withstand the top notes and let it really take over you, you have won.
It is about defeating or getting defeated by its boldness. People call this hideous, horrible and headache inducing but to the woman wearing it, it is a bold decision.
Red door must be used with sensitivity and in small amounts as everyone around may not be able to appreciate it.
I have to understand how to use and carry this one on me without making others recoil in horror and wondering if I have lost my mind.

    Passed down treasure #4:Red Door
I’m having second thoughts about this one but it suddenly hit me that I love this one.
It smells like a plastic tupperware to be honest with you.I’m a sucker for the ethereal white floral but this doesn’t scream that.If Miranda Presley from the movie The Devil wears Prada is a perfume. This might be one of it.It’s not evil by all means but this just does scream Miranda Presley for me.A sophisticated plastic tupperware and a heavy dose of some mildy sweet and strong white floral with the woody undertone. The woodiness it gives makes me imagine the bark of a fallen tree from a fairy tale .It honestly smells loud and gives out an unwanted announcement. It’s so that!
And that is what i’m looking for a perfume.Excellent longevity and is loud.Minus the tupperware smell it gives at the initial scent.

Hadn’t paid attention to this perfume in a long time—until I recently got red highlights and felt like wearing something that screamed out “red”. Out of all the many perfumes I have, this is the only one that even came close to doing that. Now I’m hooked on it. It has a kind of cherry, flowery scent that blends well together yet still keeps an elegant feel.

I have the Parfum, EDT and the powder. I’ve been wearing it since I was 18/19 years old. I’m going on 30 this year and I am more madly in love with it. I have scored quite a few of the original formulas from Ebay so far. I am happy to say that I have quite the collection…. I never want to run out. I smelled the new version and ugh its weak and sweet smelling like everything else on the market currently.
I get why some people express their “disgust” for this perfume. It’s loud, strong and pulls no punches. For me, I need scents like that because all those “fruity tooty, I wanna smell young” scents disappear on my skin. I wear this sucker year round and I always get compliments. If any one has the original and doesn’t want it, please message me. I will be glad to take it off your hands.

As a rule, I don’t typically go for floral scents because I much prefer the darker, muskier ones(and they prefer me). I bought Red Door on a total whim, and I can’t say I’m mad that I don’t like it because I had it coming. However, I was expecting it to be at least wearable on occasion, though I found it to be headache-inducing and totally trash-worthy. Never again.

It’s funny how noses can learn to like new scents. I deeply disliked Red Door for years, my grams loves it but for my it was nothing but an old lady jasmine perfume. Some months ago I tried Poison for the first time, and since it was sprayed in my wrist it got into my watch and gave me the time to fall in love with it. The next time I smelled RD, it was a lovely honey carnation scent, suitable for any age. However, I like to wear one, two spritz tops since it’s a bit of a beast.

I tried this on me for the first time. The first 30 mins aren’t my favorite, but after acouple hours it starts to really shine. on my guy skin it simmers down into a warm trail of unfiltered honey and sandalwood. Sandalwood is one of my faves. I normally think of mature ladies wearing this, but it smells much different on them, more powdery and white floral. Haven’t smelled or tested the current formula in the dept stores. I’m sure it’s inferior.

Agree with CobraRose.Old ladies wear what they like, many times aweet gourmands like Scandal, they are not a mass army of Red Door users.I hate when they equate old ladies with bad smell, people if you are lucky enough you will get to be old ladies.

I actually like this a lot, which suprises me a bit because I’m more into very sweet scents. Maybe because this seems to have some sort of flowery sweetness in it. It gave me a bit of a bubble gum scent . I once read that tuberose can have this effect? Also it seems to start a bit fruity to my nose, maybe that’s the plum. I can see where the old-fashioned comments are coming from, but that doesn’t stop me from liking it. I have a 5ml sample now, but I might end up with a full bottle I guess. Just another very lovely perfume!

Red door EdT is a beautiful scent on other women. On my skin it turns to catpee. Yesterday I had my chance to try the Parfum of Red door – and what a beauty it became on my skin – Amazing! I can’t wear non of the Red door-scents but a small 5 ml bottle of Parfume went gorgeous on me – it is a bit oldfashioned, like a really elegant lady. I will not buy any bottle, pleased to have tried it.

I recently purchased Elizabeth Arden Red Door 1 FL. OZ. at Ross last week, except this bottle is all red, shaped as a red door with little red rectangular windows, with a matching red, rectangular cap. On the perfume’s red box, it says, “The same classic fragrance you love, now with a luxe new look.”
I love this perfume, because it smells like 30% “elderly lady”, and 70% of a mixture of different white flowers. This perfume can be strong in your face if your over do it, however, to me, it smells as if a well-dressed woman wearing heels just gave you a hug, and you get a whiff of diff white flowers behind her ear next to her hair pulled up in a professional bun, with some loose curls falling out, just grazing her neck.
To me, it smells pretty, while professional, yet still inviting. I can’t help but to think of my grandmother when I smell this, but not in a bad way whatsoever; I don’t smell a strong “powder” scent that many “elderly lady perfumes” may get a “bad rep” for from others.. In my opinion, ages 25 & up can pull this off easily, with just 1 – 2 sprays.
This scent makes me feel relaxed. I wore this to bed last night after I got out of the shower. I find this perfume to have a “grown up”, while still clean, classy, and all mixed with pretty white flowers inviting scent to it. I’m 27 and wearing this makes me feel like a professional, sexy, classy woman. Perhaps in my early twenties I may not of liked it. I hear the vintage bottle smells even better than this one, so that would be very interesting and exciting to compare the two.

One of my coworkers wear this, and I must say, it’s a gorgeous scent on her. Not sure if I can pull it off as I was never much for “honey” scents, but this fragrance smells like pure summer to me.
Currently in the process of finding a sample, and thank you to all the reviewers who suggested getting the original one, and not the reformulation 🙂

I personally don’t see the reason for all the hate. Sure, the EDT is a bit strong and very scratchy but the parfum is the one to go with if you don’t want those two things. Carnation very similar to that in Boudoir from Vivienne Westwood, although the two aren’t comparable.

  16. :

Sure, it’s a blast from the past. But it’s very nice! Exactly like if YSL Paris, Vanderbilt, and Opium somehow had a 3-way baby 🙂 Rosy, violetty, powdery, spicy, and memorable. A real classic, and underrated because it’s cheap. One of my absolute faves!
Red Door gets a bad rep from women who overapply. It is definitely choking and unpleasant when overapplied. The body products are highly fragranced all on their own, so I recommend either using the powder OR the lotion OR 1-2 sprays of the EDT. This is a deep, rich, voluptuous olfactory experience!
The “new” formula in the tinted red glass bottle is GROSS. IDK what Arden did to it, but it’s a nauseating chemical nightmare. The “older” version (in clear glass, with a red half-moon shaped cap) is the only way to go. It’s readily available all over eBay so snap some up!

I don’t understand the hate for red door, sure it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but that doesn’t make it bad. I like red door and find it easier to wear and more pleasant than poison and opium, obsession perfumes of the 80s. I tend to like Arden scents and that makes sense considering I love Britney Spears and viva la juicy scents and Arden produces them. It’s a little intense but it doesn’t stink to me. It’s great quality and Arden knows how to make great scents. Give me this or youth dew and I’m picking this.

Respect to you all that loves this scent…but my only regret..never buy a new scent on a boat if you are likely to feel seesick! This scent still to this day brings acute headache and nausea within seconds.

My Mum wears it & it just loves her!
I have noticed it doesn’t always smell that amazing on anyone else.
Maybe to do with body chemistry but it seems as if it were made for my Mum.
Red Door is beautiful and feminine.
The dry down is soft, foral & clean.
I find it very comforting because it reminds me of her hugs.

it might be a bit old fashioned but honestly i think it’s time to bring those heavy feminine florals back, and i strongly believe that i’m not the only one who feels this way considering the popularity of the overwhelming tom ford’s black orchid. i can understand different tastes – not everyone wants to leave a scented trail behind them, but even for those like myself who do like to make a strong statement with a perfume that is practically impossible with most of todays fragrances unless you shower yourself with them.
besides the impressive sillage and longetivity, it doesn’t smell that synthetic at all. what’s also interesting is that the carnation is very prominent and equally loud as jasmine and the whole time it feels as if both of the notes are competing for your attention.
i find some similarity with vivienne westwood’s boudoir when it comes to the carnation note, however it is the jasmine note i believe brings a lot to generally much sharper overall effect of this beauty, thanks to which i believe it’s also possible (but not sure if recomendable) to wear it all year long. but please, please, please be very careful when it comes to the amount of it you put on. it turns into a monster if you only as much as think about one single spritz over the top.

Too strong and old fashioned. Reminds me about the 80’s. It gets milder and sweeter after it settles, but something is very foreward and in Your face about this…

If You’re wondering how does this smell, try to imagine more complex, stronger version of Charlie Red, heavy on carnation, and honeyed, with the same plastic undertone but better disguised.
There is something vulgar behind the Red Door but also feminine. A bit shocking and cheap but again alluring in moments. Hm…Who to wear? Adorable Loles León in Átame, Almodovar movie ( gosniffit.com )

Oh … the Red Door… The infamous Red Door, a pure sugary plums tuberose, and sandalwood.
This is sweet sweet plummy floral blend with doses of honey, sandalwood, tuberose, amber, anise (detected after few minutes in), peaches, freesia, orange blossoms, and sweet orchids. The roses as well are detected after 4 to 5 minutes and so are the carnations. Lily of the valley, and heliotrope as well shows later.
Despite sniffing this fragrance way before but i forgot how it does smell (now i am sniffing it again) but i thought this fragrance would smell quite aminalic and within the chypre frame but it doesn’t lie anywhere near that! It is quite sweet floral and overly sweet than mild and it’s not honey sweet… it’s fruitti sweet. Fair

I adore Red Door, it does seem like this scent is more hated than loved which I don’t know why i think it simply beautiful. Great longevity and great sillage. The way I look at is if someone doesn’t like my perfume any of the scents I wear Get over it.. I know I smell good. Just phenomenal scent. (Masterpiece)!!!

I just borrowed a dab of my mom’s vintage Red Door mini dab/splash and it still smells as heavenly on me as I remember with all the beautiful nuances I remember and somehow it smells fresher than some of the contemporary Red Door spray bottles I’ve tested. Maybe mom’s splash bottle scent has become weaker with age but it hasn’t turned though the color looks off. I love it though.

    Dear Reader’s.♥
I remember this fragrance in my childhood growing up and it was an extremely popular fragrances of that time, like Georgio Beverly Hills and many other larger than life perfumes at that time. Red Door’s former formulation was distinctly flamboyant, heavy in luxurious flowers and the dominant and loud female spirit in a bottle and most the women who worked it matched the fragrance of Red doors in some way or another and was always that memorable character for good or worse.
I have recently tried the newer reformulation of R.D and R.D has gotten a lovely “face lift”, shed some heavy pounds of flamboyant notes and doesn’t have that aggressive competitive character anymore, R.D is definitely now a”Reform” lady . She still has that assertive feminine character but now in a modest level. Also the happy honey and sunny sweetness with the musk have been orchestrated to a modest level to the senses and makes it still a delighting social fragrance for ladies of all ages, specially for those social butterflies that love to be noticed.
The perfume on my skin, shamefully didn’t smell as beautiful , my body ate most of it up and whatever was left was a light ,sweet musky “cute” presence to it and then vanished within 10 minutes. Not my new favorite for me personally but I like it in others.

I only discovered this fragrance recently (I know right?) and it immediately joined my favourites. I’m not sure if the formula changed over time but I have the red door-shaped glass flacon EDT. It’s such a classy, sexy and unique scent it’s not even possible to describe it until you smell it. It’s my go-to seduction perfume as I had several compliments from men while wearing it 🙂 When I first smelled it (on a friend) I was convinced that it was Aura Mugler, which is a new release, so I’m bound to disagree with other reviews deeming it an “old lady” perfume! Sillage and longevity are fine, but it’s easy to overdo on this perfume – one spray under each ear lasts all day or night on me. It’s really best experienced quite close to skin.

@visenyas revenge – that review is sad . I would have just kept it to myself and not shared it with others . Obviously your relative was lonely and probably could have done with someone like your self – knocking on her door ! Rather than associating this actually lovely scent with her downfalls .
    Ghastly !
    Perfume is great
Has a lovely soapt floral bouquet
Violet rose and powder to me
    A vintage beauty !

Red Door shares company with other larger-than-life classics of the era (Poison, Beautiful by EL, Tresor). Worn very sparingly (I spritzed it on a cotton pad and dabbed it under my shirt), it was not overpowering. Lasted all day and evolved throughout the day. The floral bouquet was sweet, rich and round, nothing screechy or sharp. The dry down was the most delicious honeyed, boozy, and spiced dried fruit. I could see wearing this perfume either as a signature, or as a special occasion perfume around the holidays. If worn as a signature, I picture a somewhat serious, shy, reserved person, dressed immaculately, who has a warm, generous, loving heart and a secret inner life. It’s a sensual fragrance, rather than sexy. Glad to have it in my collection.
UPDATE: I have been under particular stress at work, and wearing Red Door gives me a sense of strength yet fairness and compassion. Funny how fragrances can be that invisible support when we need it.

I received this as a gift for my 14th birthday and haven’t used it because it seemed too mature. I am 22 now and I’ve recently tried it and it immediately smells quite woody and warm, as it wears on it smells a warm but sweet. I kind of want to wear it as a daytime fragrance but I’m worried that it’ll remind people of their mothers and grandmothers…
As this perfume wears down, it’s a lot sweeter and the rose smells so good and fresh- but not green.

This is one of my all time faves! It has such a classy and distinct scent… it leaves people wondering who you are. Lots of people say its for older women but that’s definitely not true!
I first started using this perfume when i was 18, now i’m 22 and still obsessed! I had a professor once ask me what i was wearing…. he wanted to buy it for his daughter as a birthday gift.
The EDP has the best scent, plus it lasts forever!!! Even after washing my clothes i still smell it!
You’ll be getting lots of compliments with this!

i am wearing this perfume today & i just cant stop smelling my arm lol…….its some how very addicting i think this is a beautiful vintage scent its very rich & smooth & for a rich scent it has a softness to it it has so many of my favorite flowers it no wonder i love this scent i notice a few comments about it being an old lady scent……i dont think it is – it is a older vintage scent & on the stronger long lasting side but that doesnt make it an old lady scent but i get the reference – i dont really see a 17 year older wearing this lol unless shes into 80’s vintage………but no matter what ur age any scent goes as long as it works for u & u love it !!!! ok back to smelling my arm :):)

I love this scent. It reminds me so much of high school and my grandmother because she always wore this perfume. It does have my favorite white floral note in it and it’s warm and carries it’s own weight as a perfume. When you wear Red Door everyone knows you’re wearing it but it’s pretty too so it doesn’t smell like an old lady perfume.

I enjoy retro scents and Red Door is right up there. While it is a time capsule of the era it was created in, it can be worn today as a unique scent if applied sparingly. Mist this and walk through and you will smell lush and gorgeous all day.
On me, this reads predominately as carnation, honey, and spices. It does not smell synthetic to me. Red Door reminds me of Christmastime. I am not sure this is a Love but it is a strong like.
I would recommend testing before committing to a large bottle since this may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Extremely durable, up to 10 hours.
At first, this scent may be like the 80’s, but give it a chance ladies.
This good perfume has an interior, perfume develops.
After a few hours scent shows flowers combined with thick honey, such sticky, almost like alcoholic mead.
At first, after application on my skin very strong turn my nose but slowly soften. And honey-flower heat note.
I will not buy this scent again because its are not in my style, but i appreciate this gem.

First time I smelled Red Door was on my english teacher back in high school.I think she sprayed too much on herself because as soon as you entered her classroom all you could smell was this scent.Red Door is very floral and sweet.Frankly too sweet for my taste.Over the years I have smelled this on many different woman and the scent is always easily reconizable, maybe because all four years of high school I had the same teacher for english and she did wear this everyday.I myself have tried wearing this fragrance from time to time and even though its in my collection I rarely ever use it unless Im feeling nostalgic.

This was one of my first perfumes as a teen. Back in the 80s. Back then it was too floral for me. I’ve revisited this year to see if I would appreciate it as an adult and I still do not like the heavy floral scent.however I do like the flanker Red Door Aura. Even the shimmer is nice. But as for the original it’s a definate pass.

I love Red Door, and I have older bottle like in picture above. I’ve never smelled the new one. Now I understand why I love this so much: because of anise (Another yummy scent with anise is Givenchy’s Very Irresistible; both are created by Carlos Benaim). It makes this smell awesome. It’s very sweet but also fresh. There’s ylang-ylang, sandalwood, all the lovely flowers, musk, amber…and: no vanilla.
The new version does not contain anise, so that must be very different. I didn’t like Red Door Aura.

I have a male friend who only wears one fragrance, he’s Greek, he’s manly, he’s around 50, and he’s pretty easy going. His signature fragrance is Paco R excess Pour Homme.
He’s so laid back that nothing upsets him most of the time, but he also thinks this fragrance is the ugliest vilest fragrance he has ever encountered…that’s a big call for him, and neck to neck with Sunflowers, I would have to go along with that.

I really do enjoy this scent . But one word of warning – if you like to spray in your hair as I do, this scent Red Door may last longer than you intend . I have a older round topped bottle and after indulging in a spray fest before bed , Red Door lasted through two showers! Just a public service note.

Hello from Deco Dawn this is my review of Elizabeth Arden Red Door 2017 Edition. My first impression is of sentimental happiness as it’s still the ‘Red Door’ I remember buying when it was first launched in 1989 but with something extra added. The top notes seem to sparkle it may be aldehydes, it is definitely not as strong much more office restaurant friendly and stays closer to the skin as the original Red Door was a powerful bomb but for EA Red Door lovers this is just perfect. I’ve always had compliments wearing this fragrance it is very classy and feminine an explosion of flowers. The mid notes turn very powdery and soft and the dry down is warm and sensual. It is still possible to purchase the original formula on ebay which is incredibly strong but the new reformulated 2017 version is to my nose better and improved. Try it you will love it.

Though I mostly enjoy this fragrance (that is to say, it smells divine, a gorgeous and to my nose somewhat complex formula), the unfortunate presence of an elusive ingredient triggers an asthmatic response and I am therefore incapable of wearing it.
I seriously do love the smell, though, and only refrain from wearing this powerhouse beauty because asthma is literally life-threatening. And that sucks for me because I do love the fragrance!
If I didn’t have an asthmatic response, I’d LOVE to wear Red Door. :`(

I had a bad experience with Red Door and ever since I have despised it. Going to a Christmas party one year I ended up riding in a car with someone who had doused herself in this. It was cold out so the heat was on, which magnified the scent even more. I felt like I was choking in a cloud of powder and old popurri. Fast forward 20 years I decided to give Red Door another chance after reading all the lovely reviews here on Fragrantica. I wanted to like it,but i just can’t. This perfume still makes me nauseous and head achey. It was returned the next day. No offense to the people who like and can wear Red Door. Every one has their own taste in perfumes, and what a boring world it would be, if we all wore the same thing.

Wearing Red Door is like combining spritz of Samsara with Gucci by Gucci. Each complimenting other…at first I expected something vulgar and harsh, but no… It is not! Yes it has big opening that fills the room, but surprisingly it blends nicely on me…got compliments whenever wear it, I wouldn’t say this perfume suits everyone, but I think some lads could also wear this beauty.

Red Door is a “classic cheapie” that serves it’s purpose well enough.
R.D. seems matronly at first , then it actually evolves a bit….do I get hints of peach, orange blossom & rose? Sure I do.
The longevity on this is very good! Better than it needs to be, even.
The bottle is very nice too– especially being that this was $29.99 for a big 3.4 ozer!
In the “feels like” section – I am surprised that nobody mentioned that R.D. feels like a more relaxed (user friendly?) version of Elizabeth Taylor’s Passion and Dior (original) Poison . (The PLUM note is here & boldly so– if you hate “that plum note” you should avoid R.D.)
Otherwise- a nice , serviceable friend – trusted & true. Not for younger gals during man hunting season – but a nice morning at the market or book & coffee shop scent.
    Happy with my blind buy.

Red Door is absolutely a powerhouse. It has nothing to do with the sweet, gourmand or fresh trend which is dominating the scene since the last 10 years or so.
To me this is an aldehydic soapy floral chypre, which is slightly spicy and all the way very powdery.
Absolutely not suitable for a blind buy.
Red Door is very elegant, refined, and very serious. Business is the right word here.
Funnily -and there is nothing funny or light-hearted about Red Door btw- I don’t think it’s suitable for the workplace.
Rather, it feels like a winter frag to me, to wear by the fireplace while sipping some red wine, but your night probably won’t involve anything other than reading or discussing 1-2 good books.

Back in November, I’d posted a review of RED DOOR based on an old mini, which is in a bottle that looks like the above photo. Since then, I’ve purchased a full-sized bottle of the current formulation. The current bottle is entirely red and is in a flat, rectangular shape that is molded in such a way as to resemble a paneled door. (Mine has the batch code of 3HA2 and was manufactured in June of 2013.)
The fragrance itself is a significantly lighter (although still potent) version of its former self, however, the actual scent remains the same. The reduced sillage is both good and bad, in my opinion. On the positive side, the quieter sillage is more in keeping with the current style and makes the fragrance more versatile. On the negative side, there are times when a person wants a sillage bomb. (At least this person does now and again.)
This scent is still rose-dominant, with notes of honey, spices, orange blossoms and powder. They haven’t made it sweeter and the longevity has remained very good, albeit slightly reduced from the original level. RED DOOR has been on the market for a long time (since 1989). If you were afraid to try the high-voltage version, perhaps you’d prefer this lighter one, but it’s probably best not to blind-buy unless you can return it. I like it, but per the reviews, it’s still very polarizing.

The “problem” with this perfume aka “granny’s scent” is from its dry-down. It’s “dusty”, as if you walked in the room with stale air. But that’s the dry-down. The opening and the middle are glorious – flowers and amber are at their best. Advice: make sure not to get this perfume on clothes – your I’ll be locked up in that dusty room very soon. Spray RD on your skin, and maybe that will allow the perfume to play on you. Don’t get me wrong: it’s a masterpiece. But with the inconvenience of figuring out the right application way.

    Worst smelling perfume.
Gives me a headache, this girl in my office sprays so much of this stuff that it’s just awful. Smells like rotten 100 year old expired jasmine oil mixed in with gasoline.
PS. Sorry, if you love this and I hurt your feelings.

Excuse me why the hate on Red Door? Same level of hate as in Angel Thierry Mugler and Orchid Soleil Tom Ford, yet I love it! I love all three. Well the only common thing they have is the intensity of the scent.
Yes, we are talking about a thick floral juice with loads of honey. Personally I’m a sucker for honey notes in a perfume, so whatever the combination is there are high chances for me to love it. Here it’s rosy in the beginning and then the rose mingles with honey, and in the drydown it’s full on honey with more of a bitterness that I enjoy a lot. Anti-gourmand. I attribute the bitterness to tuberose and carnation.
Seriously though it doesn’t smell like a granny to me (no offense to grannies). It is water resistant as I have discovered and it projects like nobody’s business. The thing is that smelling it up close from the skin you realize that it is way too intense and old-ish, but smelling it from a distance, this is where the scent is really beautiful and distinct.
So don’t spray heavily;spray it on the air and walk into the scent-bubble if you are more sensitive. I wish to smell like Red Door from top to toe.

Many years ago I worked with a woman I grew to despise. She often wore this perfume. Even though I could not stand her, on the days she wore this perfume I would inhale deeply when I got close to her. I loved it. As soon as I discovered what she was wearing, I got a sample at a dept store. On me, it turned into tox
